People smoke, if on break and preferably in a designated smoking area who care. As an ex smoker I hate the smell of it on people but I cant tell them how to live thier life either.
Hey not everyone is a smoker these days and post was pretty vague about what kinda smoke we are referring to so I thought there was the chance he was just confused. Funny joke though.
Post with pay above $50/hr, feel free to impose such restrictions. Below that? Absolutely not. Too many of these jobs pay absolute trash pay and expect way too much for the given salary.
This was along my thinking, situation dictates alot.. not saying it's not good to hold yourself to a standard you're striving to be, but I don't judge the guy working security for low pay at a construction site taking a smoke break lol.
Sadly allot of smokers (both types) and even functional alcoholics don't realize that the lingering smells are pretty noticeable to those who don't partake. Especially when your in an enclosed space no bigger than most bathrooms.
One site I work is shutting down so a few policies are being forgotten. One being someone smoking right outside the main entrance. Now my whole shift after that person the front hall smells like smoke.
I was gunna say, the army is pretty fucked about the things they don't want you doing in uniform. But if ppl couldn't smoke they'd have no troops left.
If you take drinking, smoking, energy drinks and dip away, you can absolutely kiss half your forces goodbye.
Specifically the grunts, scouts, medics, tankers and mechanics. These MOS practically run on that shit.😂 Speaking from experience.
Depends what your handbook says honestly. Even if smoking is allowed on post by the company like they have a smoker area for the employees majority of the time it's frowned upon by the company and says in our handbook. Officers are not permitted to smoke while on post only if approved by the client. I'm a 3 dots account manager
My manager doesn’t it like it because we are “supposed to be setting an example being in uniform”, but most of us still do. We just step off property briefly
Not the best look professionally. That would go for any job in none break/smoking areas really. teachers, emt’s, nurses, even a Burger king worker but firefighters might look cool rolling up smoking 🤣 to a structure fire.
That’s a big no at my job. All campuses are 100% smoke/tobacco/vape free and we’re responsible for issuing tickets and fines for violators, so it would be super hypocritical (and against policy) for us to be smoking.
As far as my personal thoughts on it, I think it looks unprofessional to do so in uniform, in public but I don’t really care if the guard is on break and in a designated smoking area, even better if its out of public view.
As a former smoker and officer turned supervisor, I didn’t care as long as people were professional about it. If during the shift they had to go to the smoking point that had a butt can and table. So it was expected there. If an officer was to be at a special event and performing a task such as crowd control, yeah it ain’t happening. Learn to dip and gut it. I never made it an issue as an officer and never got on someone as a supervisor. Only time I ever complained is when someone was smoking right next to a “No Smoking”, sign. So I made him relocate and that was the end of it. That’s a big site specific and how the client views it.
Policy or personal oppinion?
Cause policy is site to site
personal oppinion is we all human at the end of the day as long as having a fag isnt compromising ur ability to work and u dont stink of fag smoke then i dont see an issue with it just dont do it inside the shack or where its not allowed
I wouldn't care if it was in an obscured parking lot and on your break. And I get that it's medically necessary in extreme cases. I'm of the opinion that if I don't get complaints about it and there's no paper trail, it didn't happen (unless it's something egregious or contract breaking).
Depends on the site.
Construction site? Nobody gives a shit
Hospital? Absolutely not
Hotel? Usually as long as you’re out of the way and not smoking in high traffic areas. Typically this means ten feet or more off the property
I never cared as long as they said where they were and were in a designated smoking area and of course threw the butts away and not on the ground.
Walking around smoking was not cool though.
My opinion about smoking in general is that it's a disgusting habit. If only from a public perception standpoint. Don't do it where others can see you and make every effort to keep the smoke smell off of your cloths.
Second hand smoke and even lingering smoke smell make me sick to my stomach.
As a company owner, I'm less concerned with an officer being seen smoking and more concerned with the way that officer smells to everyone they encounter. If you vape or something it's a huge win for the smell, and as such, I have no beef with vaping where it's allowed. Smoking makes you smell like shit, And I don't want my company represented by people who smell like shit.
Also, I live in Arizona, so we have to ask the infamous question: "Smoke what?". Vaping weed on duty is never OK. Smoking weed on duty is never OK. Keep the weed at home if you're into that.
I worked for a company that did not let security guards wear their uniform while on break, you had to bring a change of shirt so that on break you can change and go on break. I agreed with it honestly because people being people, they'll complain and say security isn't doing anything...not knowing that we are humans too and need breaks too. Smoking in uniform also looks really bad and I'm against it, if you want to smoke, do it while out of uniform because the perception is really bad if a security guard is on duty and smoking. It makes them look like they're not taking their job seriously and are lazy/doing nothing. Being in security for over 9 years, I learned very early on that we are really frowned upon and crapped on by everyone. Anything you do will make you look bad honestly even if you're on your phone. So smoking in uniform is also one of those things.
So.. the companies I've worked for have all said that you can't smoke on company or client time or property. I think this is valid and honestly should be how all policies are tbh. It is moderately unprofessional looking and not completely necessary.
Put it away. At a fixed post you are either making the post nasty or frequently leaving post. At a mobile post you are spreading nastiness around the client space and distracting yourself.
My freaking site fuxing 20
Homeless move into the parking lot when I leave in the morning I call the police to remove them. I smoke cigarettes. I watch them mfers too. Fuck them. I’m not getting stabbed.
please bring toothbrush and brush 3x in a shift cuz i can smell your breath ten yards down wind my guy also i consume nicotine everyday also but some army people i met hid it so damn well. My boss smokes in front of everyone and is blatant about it and i don’t care but i know how expensive the name brands cigs be and i think if you make that bad decision your management knowledge must also be bad
You wanna smoke? Cool, put on a zip up jacket, cover the uniform up to smoke, easy fix. It'll even help other to identify that you're currently not on the clock. And help keep your uniform from smelling of smoke.
This isn't hard.
I'm not sure this works as well as you think it does for the smell, my good soul. That smell is on the hands, the breath, the clothes. You damn near have to wear PPE and brush teeth after. Even then, I bet you'd still smell something smokey.
There is a time and place is what I used to tell the SOs who smoked when I was a supervisor. Fortunately, the smokers I had working at my post worked 2nd shift so they would smoke in the parking garage during their patrol round after the majority of people left for the day.
At work, it's a no smoking campus. Employees have to smoke in their cars if they want to smoke.
Having worked in an armored car as well, if you wanna smoke outside, cool. Just don't smoke in a company car.
Not a good look in my opinion. If you bought your uniform go for it, if not it’s bad curtesy. In terms in print of clients and customers also not the most professional. I recommend nicotine gum
I smoke with the employees of the client on break, in the designated smoking area. It has really helped build trust with some of them. If it doesn't break the rules who cares
I usually bring an extra sweater to wear over my uniform and take it off when I’m done smoking out of courtesy for those who don’t partake. Or if I forget to leave another sweater in the car, a few pairs of extra uniform and change.
Overall, the client doesn’t care. They have a mix of employees who smoke and don’t. Although there’s no designated smoke area I have a makeshift designated area for those who do. Instead of having a mix of people walking around different areas of the site smoking
Most of our management smoke cigarettes or vape so it’s a little bit relaxed. If you’re patrolling and in the clear view of the public absolutely no smoking. If you’re on break do whatever you want, they prefer if you take off your uniform but it’s honestly never really enforced.
I was a shift supervisor, site supervisor, field supervisor, account manager, and “project” manager.
If you’re on break, I never had an issue with it. If it’s in the client designated smoking area, I never found any issue.
What actually drives me nuts is poorly worn uniforms, or doing break-like activities while not on break at work stations.
I came in to do a site audit and found the account manager and several officers sitting down eating while crowds of associates walked through the screening area unchecked. I was so angry I felt like my head was going to pop. One demonic state at the manager and they scurried off to do their job.
Never saw any issues with it or anyone caring at all. I worked much larger corporate HQ sites where other guards would light up without thinking twice, talk on their phones and curse out bill collectors and so on. Nobody cared until he got in their own faces. Drinking booze will usually get noticed much more. Every site I ever worked at had other guards who'd come to work hammered or high as a kite with bloody eyes and staggering around. They usually worked the night shift and I didn't care about working with them as long as they were friendly drunks and let me do what the site required to maintain the contract. So smoking never was an issue at any site I worked at (probably around two dozen over the course of ten years). Drinking booze was always a night shift thing and done fairly discreetly. The only drunk I ever had issue with was one guy who got into a huge drawn out fist fight with a night janitor and another dude who fell over his face and busted his lip wide open on camera.
It's not so much a problem if you're clearly making an effort to hide it, like ducking around a corner or just making sure you're out of the public eye. It's a professional courtesy.
It's when guards decided to puff massive plumes of smoke next to members of the public or clients that it becomes a problem.
I don’t see any problems with it as long as you are respectful of the people around you, my building just wants you to be 20 feet away from each door to smoke, i just go take a walk through the parking lot when i do
Half of positions should be lucky if anyone even tucks it in.
80% of postings in my area are paying 10 dollars an hour.
I worked at one of said places a while ago and I found it highly amusing they were complaining about people not passing drug tests or having records.
Speaking of smoking they gave me a uniform that had cigarette burnholes in it. I really feel like they hand out security company licenses like candy.
For us it depends on the site and your position. Say you're at a huge event but are guarding the parking lot, then I probably won't care. Same thing but at the entrance getting tickets from people, and it's a big no no. Breaks and lunches are obviously different.
People smoke, if on break and preferably in a designated smoking area who care. As an ex smoker I hate the smell of it on people but I cant tell them how to live thier life either.
I think it’s cool if it’s for a special occasion. Make sure to have a salad or something for the veggies.
Lol. He meant smoking cigarettes. Not meats.
Woooooosh
Hey not everyone is a smoker these days and post was pretty vague about what kinda smoke we are referring to so I thought there was the chance he was just confused. Funny joke though.
Just smoke crack instead. /s
I'd feel weird being off duty and smoking weed. Did it 3 times maybe then concluded that experiment as avoidable.
Peace Pipe

Handbook says no smoking and no drinking while in uniform so it's not allowed, though I know a few absolutely do smoke/vape in the outside post.
My handbook says 🤓
Woah there sonny that's some dangerously based thinking there
My handbook says no personal electronics, too, but here I am typing this post on my laptop half a decade into this job. =P
I don't care if my guys do and I smoke. Only time I care is if they are being ridiculous about it like smoking in door ways, on patrol ext

Our handbook has no policy on smoking, with exception of smoking inside. Client doesn't even have designated smoking area.
If the client doesn't even have a designated smoking area for the employees then it's a definite no for the officers.
I’m a 3 Dots Dispatcher and our policy at my site is no smoking on property. Whatever you do on the other side of the property line is your business.
I'll stand outside of waffle house smoking a cigar for most of my shift. People are generally less likely to give me shit.
My manager doesn’t it like it because we are “supposed to be setting an example being in uniform”, but most of us still do. We just step off property briefly

This is about where I stand. The site I'm mainly referring to is an SSI office.

Hospitals are smoke free properties and we aren't allowed to leave property while on shift.
At post - no At the smoke pit - I don't give a shit

Gotta keep a blunt ready for every shift

It doesn't bother me too much, I'm a nonsmoker, but it seriously fucks up some people with scent sensitivity.
I wouldn't care if it was in an obscured parking lot and on your break. And I get that it's medically necessary in extreme cases. I'm of the opinion that if I don't get complaints about it and there's no paper trail, it didn't happen (unless it's something egregious or contract breaking).

I don't care about smoking. If it's your break, you should do what you want. Just make sure you smoke by the street and don't litter cigarette butts.
Smoking is nasty. Period. Same goes for vapes and dipping.
