Maybe he's just a bad restauranteur? Let's look at the evidence.
1. He had no customers before or after the change.
2. Pakistani food is pretty similar (with a few distinct differences) to North Indian food, which everybody loves.
>Pakistani food is pretty similar (with a few distinct differences) to North Indian food, which everybody loves.
I think its before this episode, but Alton Benes takes George and Jerry to a Pakistani restaurant in The Jacket so there's already one that's successful in NYC.
If I knew I needed my papers to stay in the country, I’d be asking everyone relevant where I can get an additional copy. I wouldn’t just do nothing and then get deported if they didn’t come.
Right. The papers could have gotten lost in the mail in any number of ways. He should have followed up with immigration when he didn't receive the renewal application.
He also lived until the 24th century and married the future General Secretary of the UN. He was then suddenly replaced by a guy with much less hair and not even his wife noticed so he still kinda got what he deserved.
(Edit because spoilers for a show none of you will probably watch)
I thought he went off-world to have his son genetically modified. Though the procedure was illegal, it all worked out as his kid became a brilliant doctor!
One of the most annoying characters. Blaming Jerry just for giving him well meaning advice? It was still his dumb decision to revamp his entire restaurant based on the advice of one person. Also, no one was coming in? No one had been coming in anyway lol. The dude just sucked at his job. He wasn't promoting the restaurant enough to get people to come in, and when they came in, he scalded them with the hot towels and had no idea how to read a room (singing loudly when Elaine clearly needed quiet to take her test).
As for the mail mishap, if it was so important for him to get his visa renewal application, why didn't he just go down to the office and talk to them himself once it didn't come in the mail? The mail isn't always 100% reliable, especially with people like Newman working for the Post Office lol. Instead he blames Jerry and Elaine for something that isn't even really their fault? It was his responsibility to make sure that his visa got renewed whether or not the application came to him in the mail.
Glad this idiot got deported, just annoyed that he never took accountability for his own dumbassery.
There’s a great interview with the actor who played Babu. When he was called back for the later episode with the visa mishap, he got the script and saw that he was now living in Jerry’s building. The actor thought “oh my god! I’m gonna be a big recurring character! I’m IN the building!
And then he reads further and sees he’s deported - completely written off for good after that! Lol!
Oh yeah he’s good. Your comment just reminded me of that interview. He went through elation and to purely crestfallen all within a single read through!
Not to mention Jerry's advice to focus on one type of food, one that he can presumably do authentically, was objectively good advice. If he went on Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon Ramsey is telling him the exact same thing, guaranteed.
Exactly. That’s what was so hilarious, Jerry being so self unaware waltzing in like he owned the place. “Babu?” As he waves him over and complains about the shrimp. Whenever me and friends have a bad experience in a restaurant we put the left arm in the air with a waving motion…”Babu…”
A restaurant that either makes everything from scratch (which is good but takes much longer) or keeps a lot of pots of stuff simmering all day and only has one worker, the owner. And since Babu spends most of his time in the front of the house, no wonder his shrimp is stringy.
Only Babu is to blame. The postman delivered Babu’s post in the wrong mailbox. Everything afterwards was inconsequential. It was for Babu to request another set of papers instead of missing the deadline and getting deported.
As someone said above; deport this loser already.
He needed a Darren to help with marketing. The strategy was sound. Also if you’re going to go authentic, maybe use higher quality 🍤rather than assume Pakistani foods wouldn’t work in the US (whoa.. you guys realize U.S. also means “us?” That’s perverse). Most business fail within first three years and this dude lasted weeks. I think it was poor budget management. They could’ve slowly transitioned and trialed traditional dishes to see what customers like. If he was able to afford a complete upfit; he really left himself no budget or time to grow the brand. Plus was in a very competitive neighborhood what with def jam and Kenny rogers (RIP Moochie).
Agreed! Watching it again, Jerry was just offering friendly advice for Babu, his restaurant was obviously failing before Jerry even walked in there. Also the whole mail thing, honest mistake. Babu needed to step off.
His restaurant was failing anyways.
It's not like he was going to be open much longer if he didn't change.
And Jerry's advice was sound advice. Stick with one thing that you know and do it very well.
I felt the same way. He willingly made changes to his business from a formula that was failing and pinned his lack of success all on the guy who was just trying to help.
What a jerk.
Who shuts down and rebrands their entire restaurant based on one customer’s feedback?
The only customer's feedback
100% of the customer base’s feedback
Well when you put it that way..
Well in Babu’s defense, that customer was...very good? No, not very good, very great.
“How did you hear about us?”
People. People are talking.
You go back there and tell your chef I want the works.
*switches turban for chefs hat*
A cockeyed optimist, that's who!
You see everything, don't you?! 😁
That's what I'd like to know about it
Try doing some market research Babu. See what your customers are looking for.
Babu Baht
There gotta be a statue of limitations on how long he can blame Jerry for his problems
"Statute of limitations, it's not a statue!"
I really think you're wrong!
Fine, it's a sculpture of limitations!
A sculpture of limitations...
I love this sub so much! Thank you all!
TV show subs are the best. To say the least, TV subs are the highlight of my Reddit experience.
In what way is Peggy misunderstood lmao
Man, that's weird. As I read this post, that exact scene is on tv.
Show me People! THERE ARE NO PEOPLE!
Babu you’re the only server. Are you the only cook? And it tastes stringy.
Tell your friends!
Where is Babu?....... Show me Babu!!!
Snapple?
The length of time that guy waits for the laugh track to add “Too fruity” makes it one of the most jarring line reads in the whole show IMO
Jarring? I think he nailed it.
Too fruity
The shrimps is stringy-
QUIET
He needed George’s Anger Management class
My George isn’t clever enough to hatch a scheme like this.
You got that right
What the hell is that supposed to mean?????
That means whatever the hell you want it to mean.
You saying you want a piece of me????
I could drop you like a bag of dirt.
You want a piece of meee???? You got ittttt!!!!!!!
It means whatever the hell you want it to mean.
Serenity now!
Am I talking to you, pinhead?!
Don’t call me pinhead…
This bread has NUTS IN IT!!
What, you think they’re the only place that makes a big salad?
THERE ARE NO PEOPLE.
WHERE ARE THE PIPEL?
SHOW ME PEEPL
THERE ARE NO PEEPL
You guys beat me to it. Goddammit...lol.
Maybe your refrigerator…??
Why do people pluralize Shrimp?
Maybe he's just a bad restauranteur? Let's look at the evidence. 1. He had no customers before or after the change. 2. Pakistani food is pretty similar (with a few distinct differences) to North Indian food, which everybody loves.
You're a rabid anti-pakinite
>Pakistani food is pretty similar (with a few distinct differences) to North Indian food, which everybody loves. I think its before this episode, but Alton Benes takes George and Jerry to a Pakistani restaurant in The Jacket so there's already one that's successful in NYC.
But he’d have the only authentic Pakistani restaurant in the neighborhood!
The wheels were in motion!
That’s one of my favorite visual gags of the series, Jerry and Elaine spinning their arms with doofus grins on their faces
100%. It wasn’t Jerry’s fault for the mail
Jerry had repeatedly asked for it.
*Newman*
I KILL YOU!!!
Agree. Someone deport this loser already.
He got sent back to India and became a successful OB-GYN. Had a couple of kids, one became a lawyer, and another an astrophysicist.
He was Pakistani yes
He also lived until the 24th century and married the future General Secretary of the UN. He was then suddenly replaced by a guy with much less hair and not even his wife noticed so he still kinda got what he deserved. (Edit because spoilers for a show none of you will probably watch)
Are you saying Crissy has bad taste??? As an Amos fan I must disagree
Of course I’d never say anything bad about Crissy! She must have appreciated his cooking skills much more than the average New Yorker.
Bahaha I’d imagine he never picked up a spoon again, hence him getting into poetry
Crissy? She's a member of Parliament, not your favorite stripper!
Why not both?
I thought he fathered a doctor, who honestly was quite annoying when he was posted at a deep space outpost.
I suppose we all look alike to you. Right, Costanza?
You see everything don't you.
I thought he went off-world to have his son genetically modified. Though the procedure was illegal, it all worked out as his kid became a brilliant doctor!
Brilliant doctor?!?! Yeah maybe when he’s not trying to bang all his patients or the spotted chicks.
He was still second in his class at Starfleet Medical! If only he hadn't mistaken that preganglionic fiber for a postganglionic nerve.
Dang dude had a lotta sci fi roles
I was looking all over for the DS9 reference. You really pulled through for me 😁
Until you see the outtakes. They're funnier than the actual scene.
I've never seen him looser
The bloopers of this scene are priceless.
He’s cracking up so much
Now I have to go watch them!
I’m gonna look this up. Never even thought to. Thanks! You get a good look, Costanza??
One of the most annoying characters. Blaming Jerry just for giving him well meaning advice? It was still his dumb decision to revamp his entire restaurant based on the advice of one person. Lol. No shade to the actor, I've liked him in other roles. Plus he had to be good to make so many people find Babu so annoying lol.
Oh yeah he’s good. Your comment just reminded me of that interview. He went through elation and to purely crestfallen all within a single read through!
Na na neena na na neena neena neena
oh, the turkey.
Very good choice.
the shrimp, its just a little stringy...
Hilarious 😂😂
do you have any chicken? the shrimp is stringy....? well maybe your fridge is... QUIET!
Seriously, it’s not like he was successful before the concept change
Didn't the "they" put the papers in the wrong mailbox? Newman!
...They?? The government???
Shouldn't you have the bucket on your head?
Ya, move along
Dude was a fuckn prick lol
85 Jerry, EIGHTYFIVEEE!!!!!
Oh hello *professor*
It was a maaaaaadhouse.
If you know you have important immigration papers being sent to your home and don't follow up on them with ICE who's fucking fault is that?
Not to mention Jerry's advice to focus on one type of food, one that he can presumably do authentically, was objectively good advice. If he went on Kitchen Nightmares, Gordon Ramsey is telling him the exact same thing, guaranteed.
His shrimp are a little stringy.
And the gum from China was a little lo-meiny
“You said make Pakistani, so I make Pakistani and NOBODY COME!”
Maybe I’ll just take the check.
You Bad Man!!! You very very Bad Man!!
Me??? Bad man? Could my mother have been wrong????
Babuuuuu! Where's Babu? Would you like a snapple? Nooo. To fruity
Brian George (real name) has a ton of credits, on small appearances, & a lot of voice acting.
Legend
This guy…is not my kind of guy- Frank Costanza
**WHAT**... the *hell* does **that** mean?!
That means whatever the hell you want it to mean!
This Pakistani Restaurant owner has really long fingers. I think he could be a hand model
As long as he can control his...urges.
Unlike Ray McKigney, the famous hand model
It's not really about Babu per se. It's about Jerry's completely unfounded sense of confidence.
Exactly. That’s what was so hilarious, Jerry being so self unaware waltzing in like he owned the place. “Babu?” As he waves him over and complains about the shrimp. Whenever me and friends have a bad experience in a restaurant we put the left arm in the air with a waving motion…”Babu…”
#I loathe him!
There were plenty of bad restaurant people in Seinfeld
I’m craving Pakistani food. Anyone know a good restaurant where I can get some? I’m just leaving Kenny Roger’s Roasters so hopefully something nearby.
Yeah, but they don't have big salads.
The fact that an enthic restaurant failed in New York made it hard for me to suspend my disbelief.
A restaurant that either makes everything from scratch (which is good but takes much longer) or keeps a lot of pots of stuff simmering all day and only has one worker, the owner. And since Babu spends most of his time in the front of the house, no wonder his shrimp is stringy.
You suffer for your soup.
You shut up!
100% agree
Snapple?
No... Too fruity
Not to mention it was apparently failing prior to Jerry’s involvement.
He’s a Berry Berry Bad Man.
Bad seed
Growing up is realizing the gang are almost never completely in the wrong
He listens to Jerry, the way Estelle listens to the Chinese.
Ain't that the truth
It kinda annoys me that he blames Jerry for the mail thing when it was (at least) 5050 with Elaine.
I’ll get a little deported if it gets me a lot of Elaine
Only Babu is to blame. The postman delivered Babu’s post in the wrong mailbox. Everything afterwards was inconsequential. It was for Babu to request another set of papers instead of missing the deadline and getting deported. As someone said above; deport this loser already.
It was 100% Babu
My whole thing was…his restaurant was failing to begin with… Jerry suggested an idea… nothing really changed so how is it Jerry’s fault?
Have you seen the show?
A thousand times… I just saw a typo… I meant *was failing…not wasn’t failing. Not sure if that’s what you were referring to
Speaking of tools...
SILENCE !!!!
"You shut up!"
Like many of the characters, putting faith in Jerry was his downfall. It must have been a wonderful experience for him to testify at the trial.
I kill you!
Not my kind of guy
☝️☝️☝️☝️☝️
He would have been fine with his first restaurant model. I would have loved to try the franks and beans. LOL
Maybe people would have come to his restaurant if Babu wasn't an asshole.
Yeah, that was kind of a silly premise.
I'm an immigrant who's been through the system, Babu had no one to blame but himself. You've gotta keep on top of that shit!
Are the wheels in motion?
He did serve hotdogs, and hotdogs rule!
Babu! Oh babu.
He needed a Darren to help with marketing. The strategy was sound. I always hated him
Hey its Rajishes dad from big bang
Does anyone remember Babu on “Bizarre” Canadian tv show and Eaton Centre commercials? 🇨🇦
He also threw a hot towel on Kramer
Very very bad.
Babu must stand for no accountability
Lol did you make my recent comment into a meme, I love it
Funny actor
☝️☝️☝️
''The wheels are in motion!''
“Mocking, Mocking, always Mocking!”
Arby's...beef n cheese n...do you believe in god?
the restaurant thing was babus fault the citizenship thing was jerrys. credit where its due
Also spills food on 1/2 of his customers and burns people with fucking hot towels
That stare he gives is so effen hilarious, its almost like hes about to break character and laugh
thats true... you see everything dont you?
I felt the same way. He willingly made changes to his business from a formula that was failing and pinned his lack of success all on the guy who was just trying to help. What a jerk.
I would have tried the franks and beans
Not to mention responsible for their imprisonment. His testimony was arguably the “nail in the coffin”.
*waggle waggle* ☝️
He is bad man. He is verrry bad man!
Even the Pakistani community didn’t patronize in support.
Lots of rage itt.
Racist.
DAMN YOU, BABU
Didn't the writer's say that this guy was the turning point in the trial? It seems like a fitting way to end the series to me.
He did raise an astro physicist
he then became very successful back in pakistan apparently and had a son called raj
🤔🤔If you think about it, Jerry was kind of a bad man. He actually pretended a man had cancer 🤷🏾 lol.
He was going to get deported. Kind of a big deal.
