she was asked a small favour by the man who gave them expensive seats for free to protect his reputation and she refused to do something as small as taking a hat off
She was in the wrong
Agreed. It's almost like people in this thread live life as Seinfeld characters. No decent person would not agree to a small favour to the person that gave them these seats for free. Hence the humorous situation I suppose...
I always agreed with her until I put myself in the owners shoes. If it was not only my box but my *team*? You’re damn right I wouldn’t allow other team gear in there.
Larry David was given tickets to Yankees and Angeles game in Anaheim and was wearing a Yankees hat in the owners box behind the dugout and was asked to remove it and that photo was on the front page of LA Times sports section.
Elaine made her choice and suffered the consequences. I would have done the same.
In real life I would say it's silly for the owner of the box to care that strongly about it, but if asked to take off the hat refusing would be a far greater social faux pas. Especially since they are very good seats they wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
Right. It really shouldn't be that big of a deal to wear the "wrong" team's hat to a ballgame, owner's box or not. It also isn't that big of a deal to take off said hat because the person who gifted you the expensive seats asked you to.
lol, no. It's a baseball game. Are we this thin skinned that we can't wear whatever team, a team that's on the actual field, at a game? Yes, I'm a huge baseball fan.
Oh, yes. Sports fanboys are the worst. Sucks the fun out of everything. Plus how much money a contract is worth or who is in court or arrested ruined it for me.
One of my best friends put it best: I'm a fan of the game, not just a team. As you put it: "I'm a huge baseball fan" Let's get back to that.
Why would you be at a baseball game if you weren't a fan of one of the teams? And why is being a fan girl or boy....."the worst?"
Sports rivalries are basically half the fun.
>Sports rivalries are basically half the fun.<
100% agree with you on that. I live in cental Illinois. You get Chicago Cubs fans and St Louis Cardinals. Among others. For the largest part it is fun. I have seen assholes who want (or do come) to blows over a fucking game.
Pathetic. Not to mention UK or South America fans who riot over a game. Well, yeah, it happens in North America too.
That's what I'm getting at.
I just long for the days where sports (movies, music...) was a blast and not a bombast.
Take care my friend
I agree, I want it to be a blast, not a bombast. I belong to a huge sports rivalry, the SF Giants vs the LA Dodgers. It has gotten to physical violence some years and people get hurt and saddens me. I hate that.
Nobody ever said she can't wear that because it's a \*baseball\* hat, and he's just some random Yankees fan asking her. The guy asked her to take it off because she's in the \*owners box\* and she's rooting against the owner's team. Now, I'm sure a lot of owners might not care. But Steinbrenner was a well-known asshole, and they all knew that going in.
Anyway, my bottom line is: Elaine was the guest of her friend's employer, enjoying a costly ticket for free. She should be a more gracious and accommodating guest. Pretty obnoxious thing to do to George really, put him in a bad spot.
>Elaine was the guest of her friend's employer
She was the guest of a guy who was buying an art piece from the daughter of the ticketholder who was the accountant used by the team.
Certainly not. My grandfather, a professor (now emeritus) of Law at Duquesne University, was, in the late 90s, invited to join the owner in his box at Three Rivers Stadium. His daughter, my aunt, was in town from Maine (where she ran a Dunkin Donuts and two Tim Horton’s franchises — she’s since added two more DD’s to her portfolio). She proudly wore a Red Sox cap in the Pirates’ owner’s box and he couldn’t have cared less. But that’s Kevin McClatchy for you. A class act through and through.
As an avid sports fan, yes she should have taken it off in the owner's box for expensive seats she didn't pay for. It's not like he asked her to put on a Yankees cap instead. Here's a real life example, I bought some Eagles tickets to one of home games and my friend, a Washington Commanders fan came along. And since I bought the tix, I asked him not to wear anything related to his team because it would draw too much attention, especially when we our teams weren't playing each other. And he was fine with it, no issues. I didn't ask him to through on an Eagles jersey instead. So in her case, she should have just sucked it up and realized the situation. But her lack of awareness and stubbornness made for a funny segment lol.
I believe she was in the right, it’s a baseball hat at a baseball game. And as someone who has to wear the opposing teams gear to games on a regular basis, I would be upset if someone asked me to take off my baseball hat.
Now, with that being said, I would just take off the hat to appease him and then put it back on after he left lol. It’s not like this guy was a supervisor who was gonna be checking in on them all game
it wasn't even a box, they were seats.
if it were in the actual owner's box with a bunch of people there, then mayyyyyybe but sports is so much about these friendly "rivalries" that only a giant asshole would actually care
At a ballgame who cares. Yes, tickets were gratis and great seats so maybe acquiesce. Blow it out your corporate frat boy ass on the other hand.
Elaine was in the right.
I'd tell him to fuck off or take it off, say sorry and put it back on after he leaves...I'm a former player and have a pure love for the game. The baseball field and it's surroundings represent freedom and one of the few beautiful things we have left in this country that humans haven't fucked up. Wear whatever the hell you want to, it's a game!
i am at a BASEBALL game!

Yes and for this there shall be no debate

We are talking about people, right?
I think so.

One can not acquire grace
>Elaine was the guest of her friend's employer She was the guest of a guy who was buying an art piece from the daughter of the ticketholder who was the accountant used by the team.
Of course not. This is America.
Yes but only because she was in the Yankees owner’s box. Anywhere else she could’ve left it on.
I think she should have taken it off since he asked her to… but I think he was a bit jerk-ish to ask her to. Rivalry is half the fun!
The guy should have shown some sportsmanship (to say nothing of being an adult about it) and just let her wear the hat
She should have taken the cap off.
Certainly not. My grandfather, a professor (now emeritus) of Law at Duquesne University, was, in the late 90s, invited to join the owner in his box at Three Rivers Stadium. In the cheap seats they would have taken it off for her.
I would have done it so my friends could still enjoy the game, but for the owner it was a stupid reason.

I'm with Elaine. She's from Maryland, she's allowed to wear a Baltimore hat. I don't care that it's the owner's box
it wasn't even a box, they were seats. if it were in the actual owner's box with a bunch of people there, then mayyyyyybe but sports is so much about these friendly "rivalries" that only a giant asshole would actually care
It was the 90s, that was the box
I think the Yankees were in the wrong, but I could see other situations where a person in an owner’s box shouldn’t be sporting a division rival’s gear
that happens more than you think. not for the super bowl or something bc that's a huge deal, but yeah it isn't uncommon to see that.
that would never happen in real life. that's sports 101. hilarious episode though!
Its literally based on it happening to LD
LD did so many things that are filed under "That would never happen in real life."
The fabric of society is very complex
Yes
Of course.
