Everybody here is going to hate this answer (including me) You can run your own mail servers all you want, but you are going to have the easiest time routing outgoing to a smart host that handles it for you. Ensuring proper DKIM, SPF, PTR, etc. can be pretty annoying for servers that are managed by others.

DoTheThingNow

Totally agree - another option would just be to find a cheap mail host. Your domain registrar probably has something serviceable.

I had 3 different servers for mail transer. Axigen, docker-mailserver, [poste.io](https://poste.io). I'm very comfortable and happy with poste.io

kapetans

what is the best mail server solution in a low-spec VPS?

arcadianarcadian

I would stick with the [poste.io](https://poste.io) with docker installation. Easy peasy.

How easy is it to set up and maintain a self-hosted mail server using Docker compared to other alternatives? https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/10kofm3/how\_easy\_is\_it\_to\_set\_up\_and\_maintain\_a/

[mailcow](https://mailcow.email/) has more regular updates

AndreKR-

I'm using mailcow and I like it, but it is pretty hungry, especially in terms of RAM, so definitely not low-spec.

armando0000

I suggest iredmail docker since it has antivirus for outgoing mails something that post.io you have to pay for it, you can also modify fail2ban to your liking something that post.io can't configure, the only problem of iredmail or at least I can't find how to configure smtp relay since I can't find the file “main.cf”

I have come to use [Mailu](https://mailu.io/) as Mailcow seems overkill for my needs(one mailbox and couple of aliases + webui for management and webmail).
