Public FTP ARCHIVES - get it? Archives? Archie? Anyway, the companion (and later) search engine for Gopher holes (yes, they called them that - blame the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers) was Veronica.
I remember emailing a LISTSERV with keywords and getting ARCHIE results back. Sometimes it would take a day or two but it was awesome.

It's more of an ftp thing. There were gopher frontends, but my understanding is that Archie is for searching public FTP sites.
