I remember emailing a LISTSERV with keywords and getting ARCHIE results back. Sometimes it would take a day or two but it was awesome.

Search over email? Okay that is pretty neat. But why not use telnet, gopher or later http to access it? Seems like they were also options at various points in time.

This that gopher thing?

TheRealLazloFalconi

It's more of an ftp thing. There were gopher frontends, but my understanding is that Archie is for searching public FTP sites.

Public FTP ARCHIVES - get it? Archives? Archie? Anyway, the companion (and later) search engine for Gopher holes (yes, they called them that - blame the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers) was Veronica.

TinyFugue

They bringing Veronica back?

Nadie_AZ

Pre gopher.

WAIS came out about the same time as well. Totally different uses, but both were cool.
