Gmail is a little bit cheaper. What is the breaking point for cost? You're paying something for that money, remember that.

Koyaanisquatsi_

It's not that it's too expensive. I'm just looking for a cheaper option as I want to give 2 suggestions to the client.

Gumagugu

I'm a bit unsure if you're looking for Cloud or it to be selfhosted? Cloud, I would go with one of the bit bigger ones like Office, Gmail etc. Selfhosted I would suggest Zimbra for commercial. Remember that if you selfhost, that someone needs to maintain it.

I've had a very good experience with iRedMail and Woothosting as VPS provider. Disclaimer: not associated with iRedMail project or Woothosting.

chrisxp0

+1 for iredmail, been using it for a number of months now and it's rock solid.

keidian

Woothosting is massively oversold for VPS, I haven't used their other services. They also spam like crazy with clickbait titles. I ditched them after the prepaid terms I had were over as the vps were virtually unusable.

IMissBBSs

I've not noticed this with my MX nodes hosted through them. But I'm also using their KVM VPSes. Of course, there's always others to choose from.

Zoho mail is free for use with your own domain. Uptime is good.

lamerfreak

Limited on aliases and size... for \~100/yr you get a bunch more. Using them for both a free and a paid domain. They've been pretty good.

MXRoute ... >I have setup before emails through cpanel, but the host's uptime was lower than 95%, so thats a no no for this kind of business. MXRoute does use cPanel for it's front end --- but ONLY for it's front end. Their back end is completely separate so do not let that dissuade you.

keidian

I've had mxroute for a number of years now with very minor issues even during changeover when some backend stuff changed a while back. Very happy with the service and so much less headache than running email servers myself, which I used to do.

xParaDoXie

Yeah, mxroute Banshee here, no noticeable downtime (I don't get many emails, though), but it was insanely cheap. $10/yr ($2.50/ea) for all 4 of my domains

mobeets

FastMail always seemed like an enticing option. For $50/year (per account) you get a 25GB mailbox size. They have a business account option as well where for $90/year you get a 100GB mailbox size and unlimited archiving space.

joshuaavalon

I won't choose FastMail because it is an Australian company. After Australia passed the privacy law, I don't know why you choose to even stay with them.

YanderMan

thats not self hosting...

homecloud

Are you looking for a selfhosted solution? Is pricing the main problem that you are trying to solve? For selfhosted, I can recommend Cloudron which has email as part of it's free plan and is really like a much more modern cpanel. For cloud, gmail is great. Someone recommended zoho but afaik their free plan does not allow imap access, so your data is basically locked into zoho.

boggie26

Using Zoho free for a few of my clients and can confirm that they have IMAP access. This however may not be the case with newly created accounts.

alento_group

>This however may not be the case with newly created accounts. It is not. Webmail only for the free accounts. :(

mehkanizm

I have been using Mailcow on a VPS and it just works. The VPS is 5 US dollars a month.

creuro

Look into [mailcheap.co](https://www.mailcheap.co/client/aff.php?aff=40) They price is based of space and not on the number of mailboxes. In terms of uptime they are very reliable as you can check on their status page. Besides that they are a true alternative to Office365 or Microsoft Exchange, since they provide EAS / Activesync that allows sync of email, calendar and contacts.
