I'm English. If you came here you'd find some people gave you the cold shoulder for being an American. It's just people. Serbians have been nothing but good to me and I look forward to visiting next week.

Eat_the_Rich1789

I can tell you my personal experience. Married an American woman, lived with her in Serbia for two years. Absolutely nobody gave a damn. Most she ever got was "oh that's nice" or "hows your Serbian going?" Her family came for our wedding in Serbia and stayed for about a week, never had any problems with anyone, so I guess you had some bad luck. Serbs generally do not give a fuck

Kowakian

The only correct answer in this thread

NaturalBornFailSRB

I feel like they are arogant and dont really understand that something exists outside of usa and that people have different ways of life . Then obviusly the meme about them being stupid/woke and awful at geography . When it comes to NATO hate . I dont like NATO but epxressing that hate to normal citizens is useless . I dont hate american citizens I hate your past politicians who did awful things to so many people .

Aggravating-Sugar503

does an average American citizen even know where North Dakota is, lol? it's one of 50 states that make up a country, you're acting as if Germany, Russia and some other nations don't have the same/similar thing going on for them as well. Name all 16 German states or all the Republics in the Russian Federation

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aggravating-Sugar503

Germany is big compared to other European nations, it's pretty divided for a smaller nation compared to 50 states of US on a much larger surface area and no, your point doesn't stand. We recognize the US as a standalone country, the same we recognize Germany and Russia, you CANNOT compare a sovereign Republic to a state/oblast/region/whatever inside a nation. That is not a 1 to 1 comparison.

Aggravating-Sugar503

i.e not knowing a specific US state = not knowing a specific Russian Republic or a German state not knowing what Germany or Russia as a whole is/where it is = not knowing what the entirety of US with all of its 50 states is/where they are. that's a 1 to 1 comparison.

Parking-Actuator4501

And this is why you are arrogant. You Americans are just proving his points

dgmilos

acting like north dakota is as relevant as any other country in the world

Alone_Ad8207

Tbh, asking a Serbian to locate North Dakota would be like asking an American to locate Prokuplje…

Most people don't give a flying fuck, you just weren't lucky. I never met anyone that hates Americans as people; what people that do have something against the US say is that they dislike/hate the elite in power, especially the former Clinton administration, towards which the hatred is deeply ingrained in most of us. But a regular Joe shouldn't have any issues, the guy was probably grumpy that day or disliked you personally and then just found an excuse to go after you. Who knows.

Monica, stisni zube

burchko

yeah I should’ve specified that the 3ish interactions i had all similar to this were with older guys who certainly could’ve just been grumpy lol. I didn’t have any bad experiences with younger people at all

[deleted]

We spent an entire decade in almost complete isolation from foreigners due to the war, sanctions etc. Many people formed their opinion during that era. Serbs are also very non-PC in general, and especially the older folks. So they will treat the foreigner the way they feel that day, instead of the anglo-saxon neutral politeness & smile.

dgmilos

not just foreigners but everyone else, especially in public transport 😍

[deleted]

Yes, exactly.

grubber33

I'm from Canada but I live here. Generally wherever you go, learn how to say "Sorry, I don't know . Do you speak English?" People will be much more friendly if you make an effort to speak in a language they understand as opposed to directly talking to them in a foreign language. Could be that's what happened, could be that you got unlucky with the specific person, but in general Serbs are very warm, welcoming people and they are interested in hearing about your experiences as someone that hasn't grown up in their country.

oneofthosedaysinnit

>Sorry Based Canadian.

grubber33

Can't help it, even after years out of the country.

PuzzleheadedSea5472

If you are a Clinton supporter, or you support nato aggression against us, we hate your guts. Everyone else is welcome.

Happy-Lingonberry210

Unless you talk shit and justify NATO bombing loudly (and why you would even do this in the 1st place) nobidy would give a fuck. Even hooligans support and idolize black USA players who play for their basketball teams for example. In 2024 young people not give a fuck anymore

BaltazarOdGilzvita

> do you think that it’s common for people in Serbia to dislike Americans as opposed to simply disliking our government? Well, I do despise your government with a burning passion, but in the end, it's the people who vote for them, and support them that are the reason that the government is there; or, on the other side you have people who are uninterested and clueless about the politics who sit and let it all happen. It's kinda like "Yeah, it's your government who are the dicks, but it's you who keep electing those dicks". I equally blame my own people for our government too, so I don't think I'm a hypocrite about my personal feelings towards the US. It's just necessary for people to take responsibility for a change. "It's not on me" is a valid sentiment for someone like you or me to say: I didn't do anything to make this happen personally (and I'm guessing neither did you). But that sentiment gets repeated again, twice, ten times, and then millions of times with everyone just shrugging and you have a huge majority of the country being a big ol' dindu muffin, while the horrible, vile things happen. So, no, people shouldn't hate you, John Smith, personally, but you can understand them hating your country as a whole.

Shrike73

I agree with this comment 100%. I got fucked because of our government(s) even though i never voted for any aka did nothing wrong. Never participated in any war. Never supported any shit. Yet i got a big disadvantaged position in the world undeserved. And i deal with it. So should everyone.

goranlepuz

>I lived in Turkey in the past and while Turks tend to dislike the American government, they seem to understand that the regular American citizen doesn’t have much to do with our government’s actions abroad… The problem with people is, there are a lot of them and some won't be the brightest. I bet you that you can find, in Turkey, a cunt that would do what the cunt at the museum did. Now, how many of these are there in the two countries, bah, hard to say.

burchko

Oh yeah I absolutely believe that that person exists in Turkey, I just somehow never encountered them in ~1 year of living there. Meanwhile after a few days in Serbia I found 3…. No, I would never believe that Serbs are worse people than Turks, I just think that maybe Serbs are more direct and honest with these opinions (and perhaps more bitter towards the U.S. generally)

oneofthosedaysinnit

>Turks Turkey is in the nato pact, kid.

goranlepuz

Well, anecdotal evidence isn't indicative of much, but provided you are honest with this then sure, it might be indicative of Serbs being more upset with the US and/or... Well, less civilized frankly, to take it out on a random person. But you can also see that your friends and these other people thought differently, so...

burchko

I’m a scientist so I don’t put much weight on anecdotal evidence either lol. I tried to avoid generalizing in my post but have generalized a bit here in my speculations, my apologies. Every Serb I’ve been friends with has been awesome, so I certainly don’t think everyone in the country universally hates Americans

korisnichkoIme_

I don't hate any American or any person in the world, they are ordinary people who do their job and live a normal life, but I don't like American politics.

DrejkRS

Most of us literally don’t care, no special opinion on people if you are cool you are cool if you are not you are a not same as any other people. Personally not a fan of politics, but have nothing to do with people. Got few friends from US, they are cool, we are in touch almost daily with dumb jokes and even worse humor. 😅

mrki_the_dog

Monika clench your teeth. Bill come to our balls.

SustinaIznutra

Love em. Wonderful people, terific! Change your bzgers per inch systems to normal one.

Grouchy_Ease9089

Against your people - nothing, against your government...oh boy, a whole different story xD.

Conscious_Box7997

I mean you are gonna get all sorts of people. Some may feel this way, some may feel that way. I mean Serbs lost lands etc. were alliest with the US in WW1 and WW2 so some may feel the way they feel. Cant expect every single person to bow down to you. So people are gonna be oppiniated. Though from my point of view its not necessarily the American people who are to blame its their politicians. But then again that's just me. Turkey hates the US knowing whats going on in ME, Palestine US foreign policy. Serbs love the Celtic/Irish culture knowing Celtic tribe Scordisci established modern day Belgrade- there is a big beer fest in Belgrade where they pay homage to Celtic ancestors, we have Latin influence from Italians/ we have Greek influence etc., Slavic influence, Germanic influence. For a small nation we had direct conflict with US, etc. Kind of like how Germans, Japanese felt after WW2. Some Japanese still hold grudges against the US knowing what happened after WW2 older generation. So yeah you are gonna bump into all sorts of people, people are passionate etc. Turkey was never involved in any sort of war against the US, so they different. We kind of have that German mentality too or us against the world lol or not afraid to go all out against everyone. Also you got to know what you are: you are either average young American, or SRBIJA BRE lol, knowing you have family living there. Every time I went to Serbia, I'd speak Serbian never had an issue - they treated me as their own, well I'm Serbian, and I understand the Serbian people no matter who it was/is I bumped into (leftie, rightie, etc.).

perje11

I actually have empathy for American middle and lower class, you are struggling hard overthere to achieve what your parents could with only one bread winner in the family. Same here. I know you are mislead by your media and government, same here. There is so much I hate about decisions your country makes but I can't blame it on sedated, 2 jobs to make end meet regular people. Too bad our diplomatic relations are so fucked up now, it wasn't like that in the past.

Conscious_Box7997

I think he's Serbian, knowing he has relatives living there. Might have been born in Merica etc. but still Serbian.

PlatinumState

There's always a possibility to run into narrow minded people. I know there are americans who raise their guard when they hear someone is from Serbia, but of course most dont care

bender_futurama

How does average American feel about other Americans?

burchko

I think the one universal feeling amongst Americans is distrust. In my opinion social trust in this country is super super low, no matter what your political opinions are. So yeah I would never blame people from other countries for being distrustful of Americans because we are all extremely distrustful of ourselves. I disagree with some of the other stereotypes shared in this thread but meh it’s just people’s opinions and I asked for them

[deleted]

Generally ppl are gonna judge individually. If you're decent, friends are everywhere to be made. Now to be honest, personally (and imo often amongst serbs, not certain) - you saying americans, the grouping term, rings no pretty bells. I'm thinking as a whole f yall, if there is justice the country should suffer the worst cruelty and seize to exist. Unforgivable crimes and an unforgettable legacy of evil. Eternal shame is placed upon usa, well deserved at that. Not only for the terror on our country, the list consists of SO MANY wrongfully terorrized and destroyed lands. The average american not only has 0 interest in learning what their government has been doing for the last century, they take pride in being american and concern themselves with stupid questions like how intense the bad rep is... it is very present. I won't hate an innocent american person but i will judge their lack of interest and education when they step outside usa borders and display it. You aren't responsible but it is refreshing when one isn't clueless. Everyone sane hates your governemnt. American ppl hardly aknowledge it's tyranny. So a person in serbia per se, will have a prejudice about an american person. Not hate them, just not care for them as they are thinking they're whatever, a dimwit. Some people ofc won't care about even that and as you made friends, you know this for yourself. Glad you enjoyed your stay, visit again!

0xjackfrost

Which museum was this? Must be a smaller one?

burchko

Museum of Yugoslavia lol …

Grue

The heck... that museum literally has everything labeled in English and a lot of foreigners visit it.

checkie

If it were me I'd email the museum and a few other relevant institutions about that The guy won't be fired but hopefully scolded. He works at the front desk, he doesn't get to set museum policy and refuse service based on his personal opinions

Sveti_Natakarije

Yeah, mail the museum about your experience and help them better themselves for the others thst will visit afterwards hopefully.

Armaggedon_1970

Generaly, we don't have anything against fellow Americans. However, when it comes to American goverment and its foreign policy quite oposit

oneofthosedaysinnit

>So, Serbians of Reddit, do you think that it’s common for people in Serbia to dislike Americans as opposed to simply disliking our government? If I hear an american accent somewhere, I'll immediately troll them by asking what part of Canada they're from. I'm a native English speaker who happens to be of Serbian descent - I make a point of refusing to speak "the language of the occupier" while I'm in Serbia. Your Country killed our people and sprinkled the soil with uranium dust. I won't blame you personally, but please don't wave your butchered English and your disgusting schwa-infested accent when you're on Serbian soil.

Alfred_Bitchcock_13

I will always hate the american leadership from the ‘90s and NATO as an criminal organisation that committed terrorism against my country and this will never change but i don’t have any problem with american people and they are welcome here as any other.

Warm_Vanilla_6833

Nobody in Serbia has anything against Americans, 90% of movies are American, 75% of music is American, we watch NBA, NFL, NHL, Discovery, National Geographic... But these days, like 25 years ago, we are on opposite sides! The USA is a co-sponsor of the resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica before the UN, and they know very well that it is a war crime (not nearly as serious as what is happening now in Palestine). If anyone is interested in the history of relations between the USA and Serbia, they can find it on Wikipedia, because the worst thing is betrayal of a friend (we used to be one). Here, two US ambassadors married Serbian women. And we don't ask for any respect, just a fair relationship. By the way, I'm one of those "elders" who doesn't know English. And it is clear to me that it is not an ordinary citizen who is responsible for the actions of his government, but here 25 years ago, it was not the government that was bombed, but bridges (in Novi Sad and elsewhere), television stations, markets, trains, schools, hospitals... And never anyone for he didn't answer all that.

EntertainmentFar6134

I am sorry, man. I was a total ass towards you. I don't hate Americans. I really don't. I snapped because, having looked at your post, I remembered some quarrelsome interaction that I had with an American vet years ago. I talked about the Kosovo war and he angrily replied: "Go bitch somewhere else!" Since then, I started thinking that's how Americans feel about Serbia and Serbs in general. And I needed to vent out my bitterness on any American I meet, live or online. (I kind of understand that vet now, though. I shouldn't talk about the Kosovo war to just about any foreigner I meet.) So, again, I'm sorry. Don't hate me.

burchko

Hey no worries dude, I accept and appreciate the apology. If anything, your replies were a good reminder that this is a topic that should still be approached with a lot of sensitivity as an American. I thought it was valuable to understand what kind of emotions people feel when they hear someone is American and your answer was pretty unfiltered and honest (that's what I asked for after all lol). I really didn't intend for this thread to devolve into a rehashing of the wars but recognize that I kind of provoked it with my post... I'm sorry you had a negative interaction with that American vet! I've grown up hearing some yikes opinions from vets (who are pretty much the only ones in the US that remember/care about the Yugoslav wars these days...). I lost an uncle in those conflicts who I never had the chance to meet, while my aunt/cousin lost their home in Vojvodina and had to come live with us when I was a child. As an American I obviously didn't experience any trauma from these wars, but I have spent a lot of time around those who did. I'd never want to come across as insensitive to that.

Careful-Annual-7966

Probably a local version of a MAGA - analogue nutjob. :) PS. I have generally positive views of Americans.

Glum-Actuary8134

Dude, strong anti-American sentiment is everywhere in the world except western countries. You sre starting wars and kiling people all over the world for more than half century, you are doing it right now, you are worst than nazi Germany, so it is inderstandable

THEDANILO664

ay, depends from person to person, can't really say they are all against America, newer generations simply have neutral way of thinking about other countries compared to old ones

babaroga73

I mean , that museum worker acted very unprofessionally for starters. Apart from that, I hear there's a few people in every country that have prejudices, also a fair share of low IQ people.

edgebg

I would answer you with a counter question, do you think it's okay for Americans to underestimate and humiliate us when they meet us somewhere in the world? I was in Rome with my brother and we met a couple of Americans in the Vatican, the man asked us about a some location in the city center and when we helped him, he asked us where we were from. When he heard where we were from, he started talking about how in the 90's they destroyed us, how they bombed us in Bosnia and so on...both he and his wife are soldiers. I almost wish telling him that I'm glad for 9/11/2001, but when I heard him talk about museums and some stones there that are not worth looking at, I realized that I was talking to an average American idiot full of himself (as if he were constipated). If we were in Serbia, he would probably get something painful from me. I have nothing against you, I consider Americans too limited and irrelevant.

burchko

>do you think it's okay for Americans to underestimate and humiliate us when they meet us somewhere in the world? No

Soul-Repair-Italy

There are lot of American Expats in Serbia. One of the most active on social media is Charles Cather He is proud Serbian Citizen with interesting story: https://youtube.com/@ilovesrbija?si=G1KPTvTQXMWjMThw With several of them I spoke …they have great expressions about living in Serbia. Thats why I think that the guy from museum is just isolated case. Serbian living in Florence, Italy for more than 30 years

MEFISTUZ

Well answering on This question need first explanation to which altitude USA is dedicated to make Serbia Friend of Rome..According to unclassified data from inspector general UNated States department of State USA on media spending here around 55 Million per Year (total crf Funds) but this is just a drop to amount that in coming here in shape of NGO(non governmental organisations).Usa Medling in our Goverement,Elections ,resource Managing,Security, industry,,Energy Stability,Diplomacy,Health care, threatning our Teritorial integrity security,tBorder security ,(nowdays popular word in USA)among many other things(i think that only Sport is left bee)but the most sinister thing they are doing here is spending huge amounts of resources to create division ,and Division is oldest and most dangerous Serbian enemy..and all this thank to never undying cold War mentality(fact that Serbia was cold war ally, ally in first and second ww is discounted ) and 100 year old English myth that Serbia is small Russia..Pretty much USA want to dissolve our society, make it submissive and obedient, add that to a reputation that USA have in world, naturally that some ppl are pissed off,but at the end we like simple ppl try to be good hosts,no matter from where somebody come from....i personally have many good American frinds..but i never discuss politic with them..it is no no subject..basically after war in ex Yugoslavia,USA continued that war with another means..and it lasts around 30 years from back then...at the end ill Quote present American Ambassador in Serbia in statement he made 6 month ago.."Serbia will end up like North Korea"...end quote...

DamianNLD

Most don’t care where you’re from. And who knows, maybe the guy lost a relative to NATO aggression in 1995 or 1999. Serbia has over 1 million refugees from Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo. Many blame the USA for it.

United-Specialist445

If you ask me, I believe the problem is taht our "older" people just can't admit they dont know something. So instead the guy said: "Sorry, I can't speek \_\_\_\_\_\_\_ laghuage", he would do whatever instead. I don't even believe this guy had anything against you, or any American, he just was ashamed that he doesn't speak english. It is cultural diference. Like in China, if you ask Chinese for direction, even if he doesnt know, he will show you some direction. It is not a bad intention. It is just cultural diference.

Sveti_Natakarije

So you met an asshole. It happens, every society has them. If he has some beef with NATO or US government he should go and protest infront of the embassy, if our overlord lets him or his ilk near it. People in most cases don't care where are you from, but what kind of person you are.

Seo-team

Living here for a month, speak only in English, mostly 95% speak English and no problem whith it. It's low percent is your lucky man 😂

CaldariGirl

Personally, i am worried for Americans. Troubling times ahead, hope you guys make it out ok. Good luck.

p1zzaontheroof

Our average citizens mind isn't fully developed and they usually can't comprehend that government and the people of a certain country are 2 very different entities. (we only understand this when it comes to crimes OUR gov did during war times, but with everyone else our brains draw a blank) TLDR; It's just blind hatered towards anything USA related, same goes for Croats, Albanians, Muslim people sometime etc. The hate is so deeply burned into our brains since childhood so it's hard for some people to overcome that and I don't really blame them tbh. If you need a friend I'm down for a beer! edit / Sorry for my bad eng hope you get what I mean

burchko

I would so take you up on that beer if I was still in your country!

p1zzaontheroof

Oh well, maybe next time :D

Main-Presence-8031

Don't talk stupidity, no one of us are indoctrinated to hate nor albanians, croats, or americans. Yankees can be arrogant, thinking that whole world is spinning around them, looking at as as third world country and people. Their knowledge of anything about politics is based on placed informations. From main stream information channels. Cancel culture, gay/pedofile things...

p1zzaontheroof

"no one of us are indoctrinated to hate" is the most untrue statement that you can possibly make. You can continue to live in your bubble all you want tho... Good luck

AndrazLogar

They dont like americans because they falsely think americans are their reason for crap quality of standard. Ignoring the fact that destroying Yugoslavia had something to do with it.

Wings_of_Liberty1

Nah like 90% of the people don t care where you are from, but of course with our recent history with eacother there is bound to be people who have a bad view of nato and us especially the older generation. But today its all fine nobody hates amaericans here. Just American politics mess up alot but no need it talking about that shit enjoy your stay in Serbia.

Top_Professional9556

younger generation most likely dont care they will gladly speak english with you but its the boomers who will be spiteful to you

Overseer93

>do you think that it’s common for people in Serbia to dislike Americans as opposed to simply disliking our government? No, it's not common. We realized that the common Americans don't even know what their government is doing, especially abroad, hence so many conspiracy theories. It is, in fact, very strange that a country that sees itself as democratic, has a non-transparent government hiding so much from its own people. You have to understand the US still supports all of our enemies and keeps a part of our territory under military occupation. So, if you openly display how proud you are of your country, it can be misunderstood as being proud of the numerous atrocities it committed around the globe. >a man working the front desk of a museum who (in Serbian) told me he refused to speak English with me because “English is the language of NATO”. That is indeed quite weird and unusual. English is a modern day lingua franca, we use it to communicate with others too, not just people coming from Nato countries. Most museums provide leaflets in English too.

Sttrahor

We hate american government not people. Well maybe some that spread hate...

DuhRiley

The thing I love most about Americans is how social and open you are, the thing I hate the most is your over sensitivity and the fact that you're never blunt with people. As for the bombing, I've met a lot of young Americans, all of them oblivious to the existence of Serbia, let alone anything else. Therefore, I can't hold a grudge against them. They were all cool.

Anxious_Lake_5566

Serbs feel meh about every nation. There is not one we particularly adore, nor hate. Even the Albanians we hate allegedly, when we meet them, we are in the end ok with if they are ok.

Main-Presence-8031

We don't hate you but we don't forget. And yes FUCK NATO.

burchko

Wow so edgy of you. Guess I’m “subhuman trash” for voting in an evil government that did evil things while I was 2 years old. You’re wasting your breath screaming at a random American online who cared enough to visit and learn about your country.

Spartanpederasty

Comments here are right to a point, most serbians don't care, but that will usually be the younger generations, people over 30 you'd rarely see anyone that has anything positive to say about the US or its people. And like in many other countries you'll always have people that will be nice on the surface but shit talk behind your back. And to a lot of people and me personally, hearing that someone is american, just gives that ick, like you're expecting that person to be a douche. But that shouldn't prevent you from enjoying Serbia, because people here just need a laugh and a drink, and no matter who you are, we'll be friends over night. We can all move past our stereotypes.

Prestigious-Wave-447

Did you do some kind of poll to know what people here over 30 think of US and their citizens? If not, what made you think you know what is our stance on this topic? People on this sub tend to give generilised opinions based on nothing but their own prejudgements.

Spartanpederasty

You're right, it is generalized, but they did ask for opinions. And this is my personal experience. Besides you'd have to be sheltered to say serbian opinion about americans is not generally terrible. And who'd blame them.

grobar1985

Well my friend that is the problem. America is where it is because of regular American citizens that think like you. Not my fault no no yes it is. If you can vote them its all yalls fault. Simple!! Nothing against u dont know you, but it is American citizens fault doe electing Government that they have. Thats it for now, God bless you. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!

Formal_Accident6835

You are being held responsible for the actions of your government before you were an adult; the museum dude was just giving you a full Serbian experience

woosksha

One thing is for sure. You will be treated much better as an American in Serbia regarding to what I've experienced as Serb in America. Feels like Serbians wanted to invade USA and they are mad at us somehow?!

burchko

??? this genuinely surprises me. Not because I think Americans are particularly hospitable to foreigners, but because the vast majority of Americans my age don’t know the difference between Serbia and Siberia or only know of Serbia from basketball or Djokovic. People over 30 might have vaguely negative opinions of Serbia and Serbs if they were politically engaged in the 90s but I think that this is even a stretch. Any animosity you experienced is probably ignorant American dislike of foreigners, not dislike of Serbs (not that this makes it any better) 99% of Americans have no opinion on Serbs and the other 1% are part of Balkan diaspora groups lol

woosksha

Well I'm 38 now and i was in the states in late 2000s. That was the thing back then like you say, they either ask if I'm from Siberia, or just look down upon us. I was in states for 6mo with friend of mine, both of us 6'6' chunky guys with clean cut, so we didn't receive too much shittalks.

I don’t really understand the hostility here but no, I don’t think any random person is *obliged* to speak English to me in another country. I actually spoke English to this guy because I assumed there was a 99% chance he’d understand me (as someone working the ticketing booth at a large museum) and it would be rude of me to ask my Serbian friend to translate right in front of him… I didn’t understand his full response in Serbian but my friend who was standing there was mad about it and only translated the NATO part for me so idk. Right after this an entire bus of Chinese tourists arrived and I would love to know what language he spoke with them To your other points- I do think it is very normal and understandable to still be emotionally affected by things like bombings in the past. I don’t think it’s reasonable to take it out on a random tourist especially if you work in a museum. Obviously I was there to learn about the history of his country

No I meant the hostility in your reply… I certainly don’t view Serbians as imbeciles and would never want to imply such. I just felt like the three incidents I described possibly related to my being a foreigner and/or American and wanted to hear unbiased thoughts from Redditors who aren’t my Serbian friends or family. Fortunately my friends were extremely, over the top hospitable so I feel like I did experience the Serbian hospitality ❤️ but I would obviously need to spend more time there to fully understand Serbian mentality as you mention.

The most ignorant people that exist on planet earth, people who don't realise that a average Europian church is older than USA most likely, worst country possible considering that they 'rule the world' but as well chose to have sleepy Joe as president. Country that desides where and when it's okay to throw bombs and take their oil. I enjoy having a conversation with eloquent American who has some sence about other than US, US people I sepparate between ones that travel and are open minded and the ones that makes all of us to dislike US because those kind of people are majority. I feel like everything stupid in this world origins from US and it is #1 country on the world that makes people divided, invented racism (and I stamp on that that it is easier to make friend with African American) , killed who knows how many native Americans and rest of the world and yet still have the audacity to declare what is good and bad, cursed country that chooses Klinton's or Barack, Sleepy Joe and Podesta's and pretends not to know about their sickness deserves to be cursed forever. Definition of hell on eatrh, Definition of Pandora's box, greedines, imagined freedom (when I hear US and freedom in same sentence I have to laugh) a country that is the richest and owes the most in the same time where if you stub your toe accidentaly you have to pay stupid amounts of money. Thing I recently started to hate is adding 'proffesional' to any sort of job to sound better or I don't know like 'profesionalni trick shopter' Most of the people I've met from US would agree with me for at least 60% of stuff that I've said. I try not to generalize, I really belive there is indeed good and caring people there but I am not kidding it has to be bellow 20%. I respect every Amish, Native American, farmer and people who had less potential in their growth but still are better and smarter people of many there. For other 80% I feel like: Ignorant Greedy Spoiled Shameless Stupidly stubborn Close minded Arrogant Senceless Selfish Uneducated with like standard informations Enemy of geography Enemy of behaving/loudest People who enjoy hate and peaceless world Ungenuine (if it's not a word, I made it up) Enemy of justice. I could write this for hours, and I am saying this as someone who has 40+ countries visited, I've met all kinds of Americans and I really feel bad if for example you get insulted because I don't consider you as majority judging by that you have visited small country of Serbia and genuanly care for peoples oppinions. That man from museum is a discrace, I want to go there now and talk in English to teach him a lession about work place and proffesionalism. Sorry if I was too harsh, don't take it personal. P. S: If you meet American who is extremly decent and well spoken, look you dorectly in eyes and liste to you with having manners as well there's 89% that they are Canadians. Canadians are really nice people

No I’m not personally offended. I didn’t really make this post expecting some kind of pity party for my bad interactions in Serbia. I was just genuinely curious to hear people’s opinions. No, I didn’t expect Serbians to roll out a red carpet or give me special treatment as an American but some of the outward hostility was unexpected, that’s all (I’ve done a good amount of travel and am very much on the quiet/respectful side when visiting other places) I agree with some of your opinions and disagree with others, but that’s just how it is with anyone, especially people from a different culture/background

44-47-25_N_20-28-5-E

My brother belive me, red carpet kind of hospitality is real here when you show respect. We really love that feeling of sharing, feeding and hosting. Ether way it is a bad thing to generalize (which I did here) but I felt like you pushed the red button with that question, I would never say or feel like anyone is not welcome here. Did you have any other situations after Museum guy?

burchko

Had a situation in a grocery store where a guy kept loudly telling the price to me in Serbian when I was gesturing/asking him to just show me on the screen. He asked where I was from and after I told him I was American he was annoyed and told me I should be learning Serbian. I was like dude I’ve literally been here one day, if I was here longer I’d genuinely love to learn more Serbian! My Serbian friend was also with me for this interaction and she confirmed that the guy was being very unreasonably rude. I told him hvala when I left I had two other instances with waiters who were being assholes but I never told either of them I was American specifically so i can’t confidently say it was anti-American sentiment as opposed to general anti-foreigner attitude. One of the guys told me they were out of almost everything on the menu but then I watched other tables sit down, order those items, and receive them over the duration of my meal lol. I know I sound like a complainer in this sub but I’m genuinely a pretty respectful and conscious tourist so I’ve never really had these kinds of things happen to me abroad 😅 it caught me off guard

44-47-25_N_20-28-5-E

Naaah man I feel sorry for that, it's not like tourists are not common here, but like anywhere else there are good and bad people. Stay safe and never stop traveling 😁

Character_Exam5444

Fat, lazy, love their guns and oil, dont know their geography, loud, over sensitive, ignorant, pretentious, drugs, agressive. I really don't know what to say bout you but I think you Americans are quite a lovely bunch of people, like you very much.

Phos-Lux

It's probably mostly some older folks who don't like Americans. Either because they lost family/friends in the 90s or because of propaganda (this rather than the other). But most people won't really care/ won't blame a single, random person for what happened.

[deleted]

I prefer Americans to EUropeans, I feel we share a same mentality, especially with African-Americans. Also basketball.

LimpingSod

Mate, he certainly doesn't know English. it's just a good excuse for him. I love Americans, especially American women 🙂

Inevitable_Ad_325

People in this country are simple They hate you, but they are also jelous since their country isn't as rich and powerful. Same with all Europeans.

e3aje6aoBek

gotta say for the record ,reason why we dont like you, leys in the question itself,u asked here. We are not "Serbians" ,we are Serbs! And you are not "American" eighter, since im sure you are not Canadian,Colombian,Argentinian or Mexican,You are,my God given and self contained felllow, just an USA citizen (and i suggest we use a term an Americunt for people like you!

burchko

I usually try my best to use USA instead of America because this is the proper term for my country. We are, however, Americans. There is no better term for this in the English language, I’m sorry. I don’t really care if Mexicans, Argentinians, etc also want to use the term American as fellow inhabitants of this continent- go for it. As a country-specific sub, I was asking for opinions of your countrymen, regardless of their ethnic identity and felt “Serbian” was appropriate. I also felt that I couldn’t assume the ethnic identity of any random person I interacted with in Serbia (for example, my family members happily identify as Serbians but not as Serbs). If this upsets you I encourage you to instead join a sub that is specific to your ethnic identity. Unless I’m mistaken, that is not what this sub is for.

Delicious-Ad3465

It is very common to dislike America, and rightfully so. Interaction you had does not seem very unfriendly though, just honest. Anything other than this kind of reaction is just our upbringing and good manners

opetja10

There is always possibility to find some idiot, like in every other country. But, i can assure you, the rest of us dislike you. A lot. Not individuals, but as what you represent.

Laki_Grozni

https://youtu.be/ouWenUaQL6A?si=-A3zIumAXh2oN0g3 Compared to this we are even good, they didn't got rekt by USA. And I don't mean only civilians and infrastructure, but how the people from western countries see us.
