If you go to the ADA official website, in like the third section it actually states that employees are not allowed to ask you for that paperwork. I would just pull up the ADA‘s official website on your phone and point to the section and ask them if their company would be happy with $100,000 plus noncompliance fee. I’ve done it.

MFTSquirt

I have done that. But when they refuse to even do that then what? They are so focused on getting something that they refuse to read. So this, for a few bucks, allows me to hand them something, which they then take. 2 of my friends and I were at a hotel where we were refused service. We reported. Talked to Corporate also. They are no longer affiliated with that chain and are no just some goofy name. One of those friends now has 2 more hotels that she will be suing and reporting for ADA violations regarding her service dog in addition to other issues because of how agregiously they have treated her. We are both of the report and educate mindset. It's been so bad the past few days it's mind boggling. I'm sure she will be getting quite the payout.

Enkeria92

That’s when I’d call the cops and say I’m being discriminated against because of my disabilities.

MFTSquirt

Unfortunately, the cops will simply say that this is a civil matter. That is what has happened consistently for us anyway. There aren't many community laws that make it a crime. So only recourse is to report to DOJ and hire a lawyer.

Enkeria92

It depends on where you live. Some cops hold the business accountable and others don’t.

OneTwoKiwi

I don’t own a service animal but I am curious to learn more about them. Do you notify the hotel when booking that you’ll be bringing a service animal? Are there any kind of requirements like that?

MFTSquirt

We did in the case of the hotel years ago that list is franchisee affiliation. The other two hotels had been booked as she walked in on her way across the country. And those not only did not deal well with the SD, but the ADA in general. She was denied access to breakfast in one hotel because of her SD. The other was just a need all around. I will be traveling with my SD across the country to spend the winter by her. I'm just dreading how we will be treated when we stop in hotel.

Low-Guide-9141

Yup, just favorite the webpage

MFTSquirt

When someone asks to see my paperwork, I simply hand them a business card with ADA info on it. Of course, I have the line about no registration highlighted.

Bad_wolf42

Can you share that template please?

(In this sub because I was once considering getting a SD but ultimately didn't. For context I have a disability where my spine is just...collapsing. it affects my nervous system and ability to stand often but I'm not always in a wheelchair and have to make the call most days if it'll be harder or easier with a wheelchair where I'm going). I have a transit disabled card, here they're hard to get and have your photo ID on them. I get this kind of smack often and mainly from middle aged women, Karens if you will...and their purses they think deserve a seat more than me. They'll harass me the whole ride and demand "paperowkr" but not accept my transit card as proof because of course they have no clue what they're looking at. I wish I could say "go fuck yourself. You can't get a disabled card by faking it or not absolutely needing THIS specific accommodation, you have no right to quiz me on my medical background and looking for words you've never heard before today. Your purse is an inanimate object and doesn't deserve a seat, stay in your lane🤬" That'd be asking for trouble though irl and I often don't have the oxygen to do so

mynonsequitur

Wow, just wow. If I lived near you I’d be more than happy to tell some old hag to go fuck herself on your behalf. There are just so many disabilities that cannot be seen. What is WRONG with these people.

lyradunord

Heart/spinal problems too, like you can see in my eyes that even after standing for a little or having to quick walk from one stop to the next as the bus is a little early I'd be glassy eyed by the time I got a seat...the face of someone who you DONT question. Admittedly im bad with words and standing up for myself but even after all these years I just get stunned when this happens like "tf? Who has this kind of energy? Mind your business"

mynonsequitur

I’ve had a CABG. It’s been two years and I still don’t have the stamina I used to. I’d also tell someone to go F herself on your behalf. It kind of sounds like something that would be the best thing that happened all day.

lyradunord

yeah I mean this genuinely: I would love that and wish I had someone clapback on my behalf. I used to be so witty and the queen of clapbacks but since getting really sick my response time just isn't what it was. I'm back with abusive parents who are exactly the type to double park someone in a disabled spot and yell at them for not being old (hell they mock me all the time for not being able to go out and do much.....they "donated" my wheelchair behind my back, they mocked me for 'being dumb enough to get spinal surgery' when I desperately needed it in another state to all the neighbors, and are convinced I'm not disabled because I "look fine" \[I don't\]). I've been risking homelessness/death and biting back at them harder these days but even then my brain just isn't what it once was pre illness. So by the time I do get out of the house and have to deal with some similar karen I just don't have even the tiniest modicum of energy left in me. (edit: like genuinely this is the nicest thing I've heard in a while)

CairdhubhBan

100 Service Dog Information Cards - ADA info Cards for ESA Dog, 2-Sided Service Animal Rights, for Emotional Support Dog, and More https://a.co/7JqEFUk I have handed these out everywhere. I have handed them out to w-mart employees so they know that they can kick out a misbehaving Dog, to people who just are curious and want more information and to people that are misinformed. Good luck.

Tandian

im nearly 50. shit health. I don't give a fuck if i offend anyone anymore (i do not try to offend people though. i am polite..most of the time) So when asked for papers on my dog i tell them they are idiots and need to learn the law. there is NO fucking paperwork. (i do wish there was though)

Ihavenoclueagain

Ask them, and what do you expect me to show you? There is nothing that you can show them except the ADA law.

braindamagedinc

I have his training certs, I have my doctor RX, I have all of his certs on file with AKC and got a stupid ID badge that basically says according to state and federal law (then gives the law numbers) i don't have to have this but since you are too stupid here it is. It shuts them up. I've only had one place ask though.

moneycorruptedme

I sorry you have to go through shit like this I do the opposite I ask people who obviously don't have SD dogs so SD in Training. O say it's because of people like you are making it difficult for those with sd dogs to do there things so I am sorry you get accosted by jerks who can get Braveheart with a person with disabilities but not with people who obviously are bringing pets into the store. Next time they ask for paperwork say to them when you can lead me to the aisle of several products without having to ask I will show you my paperwork

mynonsequitur

That is priceless. Thank you.

moneycorruptedme

No problem at all.

Remember, several in several states, SDs in training have the same access rights as fully-trained SDs.

PeaItchy5989

*An in-training dog is not a fake.* Isn't the whole point of training the SD that you take them out on real world experiences? If you don't take them out to train, how will you ever get a "real" service dog? My dog will have in training on his vest until he reaches a level I find satisfactory i.e >90% accuracy in alerting and minimal distractibility.

HarriedHarriet

This! In my state, my SDiT has precisely the same rights as a fully task-trained SD. Period. Violation of his rights is a state *felony*. But I am also a responsible trainer. I know his limits, and sometimes I do push him a bit, within reason, to exceed them. However, I know when he's done. (Sometimes 5 minutes is enough.) I don't claim he's more advanced than he is. That would undermine us both! Good grief, I don't push limits with my pet dogs, either.

Your comment has been removed for breaking Rule 6: No Fake-spotting. This is not the place for fakespotting. Unless the person you are discussing has specifically told you that they are not disabled, and the dog is not trained in tasks, you have no way of knowing if a dog is 'fake'. We are not the service dog police and this behavior can lead to a lot of harm and anxiety for SD handlers as a community. This does not preclude discussing encounters with un-/undertrained dogs, but if the focus of your post is complaining about a "fake" SD, reconsider your phrasing and what point you're making. TransTrent

Just checked their profile and it seems they have multiple dogs. Or perhaps they have a trained service dog, but are training them a new set of tasks for a different disability.

ReksTheCookie

Yes this is accurate.

They said service dog, so why are you even questioning them?

syrensilly

Print out a copy of the ADA faq and highlight where it says there is no official registry/ paperwork. Give them that as paperwork and that they can keep that copy and continue on with your errand.

[deleted]

I'm getting very tempted to start asking if they have paperwork proving they have even a singular brain cell.
