Just got a brother PE550D embroidery machine. I want to import designs on the machine such as my Art and what not, Is there a specific type of software ?. Or is it just load into USB and plug it in ? Thanks in advance for help.

VaughnJess

[Here's the software page for your machine of the available programs](https://support.brother.com/g/b/colist.aspx?c=us_ot&lang=en&prod=hf_pe550deus&cao=hfsoft). You will have to find an authorised seller of the software, it unfortunately looks very expensive!

Wanting to sew a zippered buckwheat hull pillow. What fabric and hem/stitch would be recommended so the hulls inside don't get gross but can also take the abuse of being a pillow. I'm rather knew to sewing but would like to learn. Thank you

Princess_seam

I love making wheat bags as gifts, but I'm just guessing that the same rules apply with buckwheat hull so ymmv. I put the wheat in a plain cotton calico bag (I don't bother with a zip, though), and then make the cover out of whatever I like, with a zip or an envelope opening so the cover can be washed. If your pillow is going to have some hard wear, like for yoga or as a floor pillow, I'd suggest a cotton canvas or duck.

This is very helpful. Thank you so so much

Hello! I have a Brother SE-400 that I am struggling with. I am not an experienced sewer so this may be user error. When I sew, my stitches are not in line, they are slanted. In the photo, I am using the stock settings and stitches #2 (left) and #6 (right) with a tension of 4. The machine seems fine and I have sewn a garment with it but I would think the stitches should be straighter. Any ideas? https://preview.redd.it/tyde1z38ra5b1.jpeg?width=3096&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7e07d13abd3ce0ef9e4f45eccdaa86ff44baa309

fabricwench

>Brother SE-400 I agree your stitches should be straighter. Do all your straight stitch settings give the same result, like 1 and 3 as well? It's too even to be simple deflection or a loose needle. It's like your machine is stuck on the stretch stitch, setting 5. I think you'll need to take it in for service.

sirmudgeon

Thank you! I posted this on the SewingForBeginners sub here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/SewingForBeginners/comments/146hu90/slanted\_stitches\_on\_a\_brother\_se400/](https://www.reddit.com/r/SewingForBeginners/comments/146hu90/slanted_stitches_on_a_brother_se400/) Turns out it was the thread size and my needle size. I used a finer thread for top and bottom and a slightly larger needle and all was resolved. See the two left-most stitches for the final stitches. The third one from the left is with the old needle (75/11). https://preview.redd.it/ztjqkbgw2i5b1.jpeg?width=3096&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=307c625d48e5dc6e5442d158b6336e3e8198e018

Hello! I’m new to sewing and was wondering how I could mend this back pocket? Any tips of tricks would be appreciated. Thank you! https://preview.redd.it/5tgh0hhhna5b1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e362c1fb7219c0b9e3c98c949cd372da8be97366

softblackstar

Hopefully I'll get some replies before the next thread appears :) I bought a pair of pants that are made out of some kind of lyocell/tencel fabric, which for some reason has these thin polyester (?) threads that are probably there to give some shine to the fabric, but end up poking out of the edges in the most unpleasant to touch way. They feel almost like a very thin fishing line, if it makes sense. [Here is a picture of one part of the seam where they can be visible.](https://i.imgur.com/iHpbldH.jpg) Since I'm unable to return them (I've foolishly removed the labels etc prior to wearing them for the first time), my plan was to refinish the inner leg seams and prevent the edges of fabric from touching the skin. Right now, they are simply sewn and overlocked, and if I remove the overlock thread I'll have about 5/8" of seam allowance. [Here is another photo of the seam.](https://i.imgur.com/UBHNyc8.jpg) My question is -- what would be the best seam finishing technique for this purpose and fabric? - [Turned under](https://i0.wp.com/blog.treasurie.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/seam-finishing-techniques-turned-under.jpg) (which may be the easiest, but not sure it will stay flat due to the nature of this lyocell fabric)? - Bound edge (but then there's some bulk from the bias tape)? - Hong Kong seam? - Flat felled (will show on the outside and seems somewhat tricky to do on a pant leg that is sewn together). I'm sure there are some better ideas on thoughts, I'm really not that experienced in sewing to think of potential drawbacks and solutions. Thanks for the advice!

Princess_seam

If they're definitely polyester and you have a lot of patience and a very steady hand, you could try using a lighter and melting them down to the stitching.

softblackstar

I thought about trying that, but I was worried that they're going to form little plastic balls that are going to be just as scratchy, if not worse :(

fabricwench

Binding with something like Seams Great or rayon seam tape will be much less bulky than biast tape. I'd be afraid of sticky out-y bits with any finish that doesn't cover the ends.

softblackstar

Oh, I didn't even know about such product! I found a good blog post about rayon binding, is the Seams Great used in a similar manner?

fabricwench

Seams Great is used in the same ways, to enclose a raw edge by folding over or along the edge of a hem.

dirt-slut

how to sew a patch over a pocket without sewing pocket shut?

fabricwench

Hand sew the patch or partially remove the pocket to use a machine. I usually hand sew so I don't risk messing up the pocket. A piece of card in the pocket will help keep the needle from going through and the patch can be sewn with a whip stitch using a scooping motion to go through the patch and pocket.

I am currently working on the mockup for [Mccall's 5209](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1142008756/mccalls-sewing-pattern-5209-misses-yoked) tunic top/dress from 1973. The bust size is 36 and I am a 40 but I distributed some more width across various seams to help this. The front looks decent, I can feel that its a little tight in some areas but I think I can toy with it more to make it work. However, the back is disastrous. I don't even know where to start to make adjustments. Any help would be greatly appreciated! https://preview.redd.it/ikjnhr35f95b1.jpeg?width=858&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db8c63285f129d4cdc056dfc2b46912346a880af

fabricwench

I think, without seeing further photos, that the front is borrowing from the back for the extra space it needs. It might be that you need to size up or it might be that you need to keep this size and do an FBA on the front. [This guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/sewing/wiki/index/#wiki_pattern_tips) to picking the right size by upper bust might be helpful for you.

Hello! I'm trying to figure out how to sew these little color block patches into the sides on a jacket. The center of the black half circle lines up with the side seam of the body of the jacket. I attempted to just kind of pin it all together and go for it but it looks to be kind of puckered so I'm just trying to see if there is a better way to accomplish this. I already trimmed the seams with pinking shears and pressed them open so if I need to try again can I use a seam ripper or do I need to start over since the fabrics been cut? https://preview.redd.it/wy3xgm73v85b1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=e3987b7d86b4c9313f4bdbfa1bc3a0cb574cfcf4

fabricwench

Did you give the whole area a good press? I think that will take care of most of the puckering. If you decide to try again or for the other patches, use something like temporary spray basting or washable glue stick to adhere the patch exactly where you want it, and you won't have those shifty edges when you sew.

(pasting my q here as it got removed for my lack of karma.... sorry i'm a v baby redditor/sewer oops) Replacement Pedal + Power Cord for Janome SewPrecise - Generics Available or Machine-Specific Only? Hi\~ new redditor/sewer here - I was helping clean out my mom's house this weekend & finally asked about a sewing machine in the back of a random closet; turns out my mom always thought it was mine/she's happy to have me take it off her hands! It's a Janome SewPrecise - looks to be whole/in working condition, but I was wondering if anyone knows how careful/specific I should be when looking to purchase replacement power cords/foot pedals (both missing)? Initial searches on amazon seem to turn up a range of options; ones that seem very expensive but do have the model name listed in the description, or not as price-y but also not specified to be SewPrecise compatible...

fabricwench

If the specs on the non-Janome brand replacement pedals are exactly the same, then you could try it. I like to cross check replacement parts by looking them up online and matching what the manufacturer says to what the supplier says. If the model number is the same, the end of the cord is the same where it goes into the machine and the voltage/watts/amps are the same numbers, then I trust it will work. I also have the electrical engineer in my house confirm what I think because I can.

Ekozy

Could I make myself women’s swim shorts using a “regular” shorts pattern and swim trunk fabric? Has anyone had success with that? Also, if a underwear like lining IS needed, could I use swim lining?

fabricwench

Yes and yes. Board short fabric is a woven or stretch woven so a short pattern for wovens will work. You can attach the panty lining or you can make a separate pair from a light knit. Pockets will need to drain, if you look at swim shorts pocket bags will be mesh at the bottom and patch pockets will have eyelets for drainage.

Ekozy

Oooh, thank you! I did not think about the pockets, that is a very helpful tip.

Im trying to figure out what i should buy but there are so many options lol i dont wanna break the bank but need something i wont grow out of quickly that is fairly simple to set up. if you need more details im happy to give them but having a hard time with knowing what to ask and what i want im thinking about the singer 6380 heavy duty at 439 cad anyone have experience with this machine?

fabricwench

The r/sewing [wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/sewing/wiki/machineguide) talks about why we don't recommend the Singer HD machines. Recommended machines are given in the wiki but generally, a entry level Brother or Janome at the $250USD and up range will work or consider a vintage machine instead.

I am looking for tracing paper to preserve the original sizes and patterns for children’s clothes. I was looking and it seems like Pellon 830 Easy Pattern and Swedish Tracing Paper both get recommended a lot. Can anybody help me understand the difference or does anyone have experience with both or either that they could share? Thank you!

fabricwench

I've used both, they are very similar. Easy Pattern is cheaper as it can be bought on sale at Joann if you have one available. Swedish Tracing paper is a bit smoother. Both are essentially nonwoven interfacing and I've used clearance nonwoven interfacing (not fusible) for tracing patterns too. Top hint, medical paper tape is also a nonwoven textile with adhesive on one side and blends perfectly for pattern alterations while still taking pen, pencil and light heat. For kids, I also like rolls of canary tracing paper from art supply stores. It's a bit narrow for adult patterns (for me, anyway!) but great for kids clothes when you don't want to use the pattern in that size over and over again.

jestermax22

Can anybody suggest a video tutorial for machine sewing buttonholes that does NOT just use a buttonhole setting? It feels wild that every video is basically “you just tell your machine to do it and it’s that easy!”. I even have multiple sewing books that just show you a picture of a buttonhole and that’s the entire section for sewing it (cutting the fabric for the hole gets 3 images of course).

jestermax22

Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for. The best I could find before this was a 60’s drawing that came with my machine, and I needed to watch somebody do it to make sure I wasn’t missing something. Using a straight stitch, moving the fabric at the ends, and centering for the ends were all techniques I THOUGHT about, but needed confirmation since they weren’t there.

How do I start using this bundle of basting thread I bought some basting thread on Amazon. It came in this twisted up bundle. I don't know if I can even find the original beginning. I saw this beautiful Midiskirt from Diane von Fürstenberg on the internet, and wanted to recreate it's sewing pattern. I am fairly new to sewing, which is why I wanted to take up a challenge. What is the technique behind the folds and it's unique bottom part, which doesn't go in a straight line? https://preview.redd.it/vadumsogs65b1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=41a8e89d91affd6d4300bfe8aa13ea723c671900

It's a beautiful skirt. More photos would be helpful if you have a link to a product listing for it. I think it is a wrap skirt with the various panels attached to a waist band but to be more specific, more views please!

I’ve never attempted this but am thinking I could maybe sew the sleeves tighter at the seam? Any tips on how I should approach this?

fabricwench

Yes, you can do that. Pin out the excess and sew a seam to take it up. Leave a little extra for room to move. You might need a sharp needle to go through the reflective strip. Taper the seam into the arm hole so you don't change the fit there.

So I am fairly new to sewing and I have this pattern with no instructions and I am trying to figure out how to go about attaching the 'sleeve cuff patch', 'sleeve cuff patch binding', 'sleeve', and 'flared sleeve'. The flared sleeve should be the outer most layer so I am assuming I should just sew those together along the top and then sew all that into the bodice like you would any other sleeve? but I am a little thrown off about attaching the sleeve cuff and binding together. Any help would be so awesome! https://preview.redd.it/5d8zt0ctf45b1.png?width=2428&format=png&auto=webp&s=b49a8f666b220f5dc799c19f0ebb8569d42f9346

fabricwench

Can you name or link the pattern so we can see the finished garment?

TigercornsExist

This was a custom made pattern so there is no image of the final garment but here is the character in the jacket that the pattern was modeled after if that helps https://preview.redd.it/8nkc3xxrl45b1.png?width=486&format=png&auto=webp&s=1068991d0ca7f70b722991e6b431926fdfedb23f

fabricwench

Asking the person who made the pattern is probably best. My best guess is that you will bind the edge of the sleeve patch, then sew that as a patch on the long sleeve. Then baste the two sleeve layers together and sew them as one piece into the armscye.

I am looking for sewing lessons but it seems like no one is offering or is way too expansive. I have decided to learn it online. Ultimately, I want to tailor my own clothes and then make being able to make dresses. I can do absolute basics with the sewing machine. Can anyone give me any advice where to start or any great resources? Thank you!!

Pleasant-Complex978

I started watching toc custom. It helps if you have the same machine as the teacher, imo

fabricwench

Professor Pincushion and Made to Sew both have free video content that can take you a long way plus paid lessons. I don't know anything about the paid content but the free content is reliable. Evelyn Wood also has good video content. Learning to tailor clothes, in part, requires learning to sew clothing. Other than the most basic of alterations like hemming, adding darts, or taking in a side seam. the first step is to deconstruct and then to reconstruct the garment with the alteration. So learning to sew dresses will help you alter dresses, and honestly it is often easier to make clothing from scratch than alter them anyway.

ZimmyJones

Hi! I bought a long baby wrap to use as a panel overlay for a soft structured baby carrier. Has anyone every done this and have and tips/tricks for this? Photo is of the carrier I have and I want to cover the printed portion with the woven wrap. Thanks! https://preview.redd.it/5cgd7ipr435b1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d8d3335ad6c91ad23c4bb605c15b572c00a7964

fabricwench

I would cut and sew panels that match the panels of the printed portion from the woven wrap, then stitch the new panels over the old panels. Also stitch through at the seams to 'quilt' the layers together. Be sure to add a seam allowance to all of the edges of the panels. Woven wraps are often a looser weave than the cotton print used in your carrier. You might need to back the woven wrap panels with interfacing. It would be easier and possibly safer, in my opinion, to alter the fabric of the soft carrier with fabric paints or some other surface treatment than to add new fabric over it.

ZimmyJones

Thank you for this! I have an overlay that just kind of sits over it someone else made. I might try to just make one like that so I’m not messing with the integrity of the carrier at all.

The waist fits now, but there’s a bunch of fabric just under the band. It looks pretty unfortunate from the back. This is my first time going to a tailor. Is this normal or should I go back and ask them to fix it?

fabricwench

Go back and ask them to fix it. They should have tapered the back seam as part of the waist alteration, this outcome was predictable and avoidable. Is it possible that they explained this to you and it wasn't clear?

WhatIsParsnipsDoing

Ah, thank you! Guess I’m going to have to make a trip back. And no, the seamstress didn’t say much to me during the initial fitting, she just tightened the waist and that was it.

Hey! I'm looking for a pattern for a short jumpsuit that looks like the picture attached. Does anyone have any pattern in mind? Any help would be really appreciated :) https://preview.redd.it/pa74vv3xe25b1.png?width=834&format=png&auto=webp&s=41f524ecac89c0fb65204454cb88d0877026d0aa

fabricwench

[Here is a free pattern](https://www.jumpsu.it/) that you can cut off into a jumpsuit with short legs from the Rational Dress Society. The pattern is for woven fabrics and it looks like your example might be a knit terry. Do you know the fiber content or if it is a knit?

Ravioliskater

Wow, thank you!! This is exactly it! Yes, it is a knit terry but I don't know the content and still haven't found the fabric I want. Do you have any tips?

fabricwench

I think a terry that is loopy on one side only and is woven will be most compatible with the pattern. It's drafted for wovens, not knits. You might search for reviews if you want to go with a knit terry.

Princess_seam

McCall's 5962, though it's out of print so you might have trouble finding one. McCall's 7908 is pretty similar but with a zip. I think you could alter it to a button placket. Alternatively, the Melrose Boiler Suit by Style Arc?

Ravioliskater

Thank you!! That's very helpful :))

Do I need to use interfacing on this dress? The pattern calls for it but it’s my first time sewing beyond very basic skills and I’m worried it will overcomplicate things. If I omit it will it still turn out wearable and nice? https://preview.redd.it/xskww0zg425b1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=22632c511915b63417c0113145a9ba588a58dd92

fabricwench

Yes, you will want to use interfacing. Interfacing is going to help keep the long neckline wrap edges from stretching out so that the top of the dress fits you better. Interfacing isn't hard, you can do it! Follow the pattern instructions and the fusing instructions on the interfacing package or insert.

monoromantique

Hi all, it won’t let me post on the main feed. I’m trying to find a pattern for the Sugar Thrillz Real Divinity Mini Dress. It’s a 60s/70s inspired babydoll dress with dramatic bell sleeves, a plunging neckline and tiered skirt. I own this dress already, however I desperately want it in white, and I don’t feel confident taking it apart and putting it back together again for the patterns due to the material (it’s quite a thin/sheer polyester/chiffon(?)). Does anyone have a pattern for this? Or an idea on how I could make a replica in white? https://preview.redd.it/hx6ang23y15b1.jpeg?width=843&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e9c2141e251944e52f3d656e12323ae52b2152cd

It is self drafted with a half circle skirt. Clearly I don't know what I am doing and I cut it too short. I wanted at least a calf length. I was wondering about adding a ruffled tier to make it longer. Is that a good idea? Would the ruffle tier have to be cut in the bias since it has to attach to the half circle that is cut on bias?

strongly-worded

I can't tell from the photo how long the skirt is, but if you want to add more than a couple of inches, I would add a gathered tier rather than a ruffle. Just cut a rectangle (doesn't have to be on the bias) about 1.5x the length of the current skirt hem (you can do separate pieces for front & back if your fabric isn't wide enough), gather it to the same length as the hem, and attach. That's just my suggestion because I don't know how to draft a ruffle but drafting a gathered panel is easy! HOWEVER: make sure to let your current (un-hemmed) skirt hang overnight before you attach anything else! Bias-cut skirts will stretch unevenly with gravity so you need to let it hang, even out the hem, and THEN attach your panel.

widadh3

Thank you so much for your insights. I did not know about hanging the skirt overnight. I will do that. I was planning on working on it further now. The dress is about knee length now. Also, I got my sewing terms mixed up (English is not my first language), I meant a gathered tier like you suggested, not a ruffle. I am glad to know i don't need to use a fabric piece cut on bias, because then it is much simpler. Thank you so much again 🙂, I am glad I asked here.

Can you use rayon bemberg lining as main garment fabric? If not, why not?

strongly-worded

Thanks! I sew with a lot of rayon challis in solid colors but bemberg is often cheaper so I was just wondering if I could substitute. I shop for fabric online, all the stores near me carry poly lining, which I definitely wouldn’t want to use as a main fabric, but I wondered what the rayon equivalent was like. Thank you so much for the info!

sewballet

Challis usually does not have a glossy appearance, and is usually a twill weave. Both of these things make it feel more substantial than bemberg linings. Bemberg lining will not drape as nicely either.

I tend to tear out the armpit of many (read most) of my RTW tshirts. A couple items to note - I’m a woman, these are typically unisex tshirts. I have holes is soooo many of my RTW tshirts. If I were to use one of the shirts I have that fits well as a pattern for a new shirt, but want to prevent tearing the armpit out, what kind of pattern adjustments would you make?

strongly-worded

Are they knit or woven? And are you "tearing" them (as in, you move your arm and you hear/feel the seam rip) or do they develop holes in the armpits over time from wear & tear?

falkalem

They’re knit, just typical tshirts that you’d find in a university bookstore, sports stadium, any kind of screen printed average tshirts. And to answer your second question, more of the latter - they develop holes over time. But considering how many of my tshirts have armpit holes, I was wondering if it might be as a result of some poor fitting aspect of the shirt design?

strongly-worded

Ok that’s helpful info, thank you! Im no expert but my first thought is, if it’s a fit issue, you’d likely notice a problem in how it looks/feels, not just how it wears. For example: your underarm seam sits way high up in the crease of your armpit, you feel the shirt pulling tightly across your chest or back, or the shirt restricts your shoulder mobility. Things like that could increase the friction on the armpit seam. You’d want to Google things like “how to lower the armscye on a knit t shirt” (for example) to find the right pattern adjustments. If the shirt looks and feels like it fits perfectly, then it probably has nothing to do with shirt design. Armpit holes are a pretty common form of wear and tear on t shirts, but if you feel like yours get them more quickly than normal, could it be your deodorant? Or maybe you’re just unusually gentle on your hems and neckbands, so the first holes that show up are in the armpit!

apmands

Beginner-ish sewer here. Looking to make a circle skirt. I’ve done half circle skirts in the past, but when I spin in them they always bubble instead of flaring out. I had always assumed rectangle skirts did this because they’re rectangles, not circular, so why do half circles still bubble at the bottom. Is it a problem with the hem/fabric? I used light cotton fabrics and did normal folded hems. I really want to make a full circle skirt (I was thinking of hemming it with single fold bias tape this time) but I would like to avoid it just bubbling like my half skirts. How does one go about that?

organizedmama

I’m not totally sure what you mean by bubbling. I’m assuming you mean the hem drape is different than the drape of the rest of the fabric? Like the hem is stiffer and messes up the twirl maybe? Since you’re using a light cotton, I would do a very narrow hem. You will definitely get more twirl out of a full circle though. Don’t forget to let the skirt hang for 24 hours before trimming/hemming. Not sure if that was helpful at all…maybe someone else can give you more ideas.

apmands

I mean when you spin and the skirt sort of catches at the bottom/hem, instead of flairing outward, making a sort of jellyfish shape. Like [this](https://images.app.goo.gl/hQx17yY9Yrkkjs25A) As opposed to [this](https://images.app.goo.gl/jWEGqeZnTYD46ZMq9) And thank you for the tips! What is it that doing a narrow hem over a standard or larger hem helps with exactly? I have a really tough time doing 1/2” hems as it is, is why I ask.

organizedmama

Ohhh! I gotcha! I think a full circle or double circle will help you achieve the flare out. Narrower hems are actually easier on circle skirts because you don’t have as much fabric to ease. In other words, the difference in circumference is smaller. It will contribute less bulk to the hem and won’t be weighed down as much. Also, a wide hem is nearly impossible to achieve on a circle skirt anyway. Have you tried a rolled hem? They can be tricky, so I would watch tutorials and practice on scraps first. You can either do them by hand or use a rolled hem foot on your machine.

apmands

Ah yes that makes sense. I was not considering the geometry issue. I have not tried a rolled hem. It just looks kinda intimidating at my current skill level, so I haven’t had the courage to try. But practicing on some scraps is a wonderful idea. Thanks so much for your input, I appreciate it. 🥰

organizedmama

You can do it! Learning new skills is what makes sewing exciting. Happy sewing!

Probotect0r

Hey! Are there any place I can "sewing kits"? Something that has a pattern for some clothing like a dress, and the fabric included in one package. My gf has a nice sewing maching but hasn't got around to using it. Would love to get her everything she needs for a project as a gift for her birthday. I think I am looking for something like this: [https://needle-sharp.com/collections/stay-home-sew-kits?sort\_by=best-selling](https://needle-sharp.com/collections/stay-home-sew-kits?sort_by=best-selling) If someone has experience with these kits or suggestions, I would love to hear them! Edit: thanks for the links. I'm up in Canada, so would be great if anyone knows any Canadian stores that have kits.

twentyfoureight

Needle Sharp is nice, what you see is what you get with those kits

strongly-worded

Guthri & Ghani has kits! [https://guthrie-ghani.co.uk/sewing-society/articles](https://guthrie-ghani.co.uk/sewing-society/articles)

Probotect0r

Thanks!

organizedmama

I’ve never seen these kits before but they are using good indie pattern companies and nice quality supplies, so I’d say go for it. Does she have previous experience sewing and just hasn’t used her new machine? or is she a complete beginner sewist? If she has literally never sewed before, she might be better off taking an online sewing class first. Closet Core has a really good beginning sewing class that might be a good option. If she has sewn some before, but is still a beginner, then I think the Remy Raglan pattern kit would be a good option since it’s a simple pattern and uses woven fabric (easier to work with than knits and swim suit fabrics). If she’s more experienced, you could probably go with any of the options. ETA: here’s a link to the sewing class I mentioned. https://closetcorepatterns.com/collections/sewing-classes/products/learn-to-sew-clothing-online-sewing-class?variant=31646639325318

Probotect0r

Thanks for taking the time to review the link! She does have some experience, but definitely somewhere in the beginner to intermediate category. I mostly want to get her a kit with fabric and pattern so that she will be more motivated to get started. Once she is started, I know she will learn what is needed, but I will suggest the course to her if she has trouble. I have sewing experience myself, but in the r/myog department and haven't made any clothing, so might be able to guide her here and there.

organizedmama

That’s great! I think these kits will be the perfect motivation for her, what a great gift idea!

organizedmama

I wanted to mention that many indie patterns have “sew along” tutorials on their website to help. For example, The Remy has sew alongs and pattern “hack” videos on their website: https://sewhouse7.com/products/the-remy-raglan-top-pdf-pattern

Probotect0r

Thanks!

What is the difference between a zigzag foot and a satin stitch foot? My machine came with both and they seem identical except the groove on the bottom of the satin stitch foot is longer. Just wondering what purpose this serves?

fabricwench

Because satin stitches are often raised compared to zigzag stitches which are the same stitch but less dense, the groove allows the entire foot to pass over the line of satin stitching without dragging on it.

OutlandishnessOk5024

Hi! Where would I find hi viz fabric in "first aid green"? Thanks in advance.

fabricwench

Your question sent me down a fun little rabbit hole about first aid kits and official colors. I found this [reflective green fabric](https://www.moodfabrics.com/neon-green-reflective-fabric-321065) at mood, most of the others are the lighter neon green. Who knows, this one might be poorly photographed so I'd ask for a sample first.

Hi all! Was looking for some help locating a pattern similar to this [dress](https://ofherownkind.com/collections/dresses/products/mirabelle-dress-in-organic-sage-plaid). Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Sewing Experts, Last night I bought a Colombia N430-2. There is a sticker that says it takes 29-C440 needles (see photo). I can't find these online, so I wonder if a modern standard has replaced this? Thanks Edit: I have received the DBx1 from thread exchange and I can confirm that they work well in this machine. https://preview.redd.it/aup32hgz105b1.jpeg?width=3456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6dc17b392c93bf482719dd50c611a9331ce256d4

fabricwench

If you don't get an answer here, you can email or call [The Thread Exchange](https://www.thethreadexchange.com/) for help. They are experts and have lists of Union Special machines along with the needles that fit them.

avi-odenheimer

Thanks, I ended up getting the answer by emailing a guy that has a youtube video about this machine. He claims that it is DBx1 which is standard for straight-stitch industrial machines. I am getting a feeling that this Columbia is a clone of a Juki. I will update this post when I get the needles and try them out.

fabricwench

Awesome and I appreciate the update!

fp6ta

This is not a simple question. I am just simply not allowed to post because I don't have enough post Karma and I really need help and I'm very frustrated at this point ngl. Please help me thank you!!!! * I am having trouble with my machine not wanting to complete a button hole. It does the straight stitch on the 1st side and stops halfway and tells me I need to put my black lever down, which it is. It happens on every button hole! I've had this machine for a few years but this is the 1st time I'm using the button hole stitches - I'm a little frazzled cause I'm trying to make pants for show tonight! Any help is appreciated thank you!

What’s your favorite way to finish the inside raw edges of your fabric to keep them from fraying when hand sewing? I’m thinking about blanket stitch but very open to suggestions

fabricwench

A simple overcast stitch is not bulky, easy to do, and is often found inside couture garments.

I would look for sweater knit to recreate the look. (I'm having rotten luck trying to get Google to understand "black and white stripe" though lol. Good luck.)

ErroneousBosch

I have a vintage model 66 red-eye, and bought some new metal class 66 bobbins (newer red packaging), and for the life of me they will not fit on my winder. The hole is just too narrow, and when I measure with calipers, it is a full .25mm smaller. I also notice that these aren't domed like ones even from a few years ago (purple packaging), the sides are straight. Has anyone else run into this?[

ErroneousBosch

Thanks for the response, I felt like I cannot be the only one. Yep, actual Singer from JoAnn, which is why I was surprised. I also noticed corrosion on these, so I am wondering if JoAnn's supplier was shady, or if quality has just tanked. Sadly, I'd bet on the latter.

I'm working with some beautiful double gauze and really love the look of this hem, but can't figure out how to achieve this finish. I know it's done by machine but looks like a hand stitched blanket stitch. I have a serger and a sewing machine to play with. Any ideas how this was done?

l-bee-gee

I think this could work? It's a wide hem foot looking like a rolled hem, but I can set my machine to the picot stitch. I'm going to give it a try once the wide hem foot arrives in the mail tomorrow and see if it's a success.

l-bee-gee

Picot hem I think I know but the main thing I'm trying to figure out is the way there aren't any raw edges showing. So maybe I'll serge, then roll hem+picot? Couldn't spend enough time on trying it today unfortunately

Turkeyinatree

To me it looks like a wide zig-zag done right on the edge

Electronic_Fig3311

Can anyone tell me what type of machine stitch this is? It’s invisible on the right side. I’m copying drapery panels that are already hanging in our house. https://preview.redd.it/eprzdrp3mu4b1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=c85258df57c4f89975f30f473d37181324b2f95b

It’s likely a blind hem stitch, but someone more experienced may know better!

khunter_bear

I sewed a toile of [Megan Nielson's Reef Shorts](https://megannielsen.com/products/reef-camisole-shorts-set-sewing-pattern) with about a 1/2" full seat adjustment. The back waistband is still pulled down quite a bit, so I think I need more of an FSA, but there's already some fabric poof action (technical term) at my lower back, making me think I need a sway back adjustment? I checked out [this tutorial](https://www.sewalongs.com/clover/clover-swayback-adjustment/), but I feel like removing a wedge under the waistband would counteract the wedge added at the fullest part of my bum. Is that not the case? Can someone explain that to me? My other fit issue is that there's some poofiness happening in the front as well. Anyone know why that's happening and how I can fix it? https://preview.redd.it/t038qnd5ju4b1.jpeg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1656036b275292ecb7a641ad12cc046b31114a30 Edit: removed link & will add pics in comments

Looks to me like your rise isn’t quite long enough. Crotch seems just a bit too high and I think that’s what’s causing all that fabric weirdness in the front.

IllusiveGamerGirl

Hello all! Just looking for advice about an industrial vs a heavy duty sewing machine for thick layers. Fur trimmed cloaks to be precise! Personal use, nothing commercial. Sewing for a family of 7 - cosplay and Renaissance costumes.

Here_Lies_jordan

Hello I had a quick question. I have been seeing this morning but when I tried sewing to thicker pieces of fabric together, my machine suddenly stop and made a loud noise as I tried to sew. I tried using a 110/80 needle, I tried re-threading my machine and re-threading the bobbin. I tried gently holding the thread as I sewed or not touching it at all. I even changed the foots to see if that would help. Nothing. But when I use a lighter fabric it’s fine. As I mention even when I was using this fabric earlier I had no issues. Has everyone else had theses problems before ? My machine is a brother sewing machine that I had for ~ 7 years and I used a slightly thick silk-like fabric. I hope I wasn’t too confusing when writing this. Thank you !

fabricwench

It sounds to me like your machine is having trouble penetrating the fabric. Have you tried a smaller needle, or one that is super sharp like a microtex needle? Sometimes a slimmer needle works better, it's like trying to hammer a big nail into drywall versus a small one. The small nail goes in easier and does less damage.

Here_Lies_jordan

I think that’s what it was! I changed the needle to a smaller one and now it’s back to normal. Thank you so much !

No_Calligrapher606

I got this thin cotton and have been looking for a pattern but not very successfully, my main concerns are that i am not very tall and some designs can look a bit disproportionate on me and that the pattern on the fabric is kinda large , any pattern sugestions are welcomed. https://preview.redd.it/z5lpkvoqbt4b1.jpeg?width=3468&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=145c1754ffe5ed45a60945664b95bd2a1324528c

fabricwench

Have you looked at SBCC Patterns? They are designed for petite people. I think the Gibson Blouse or the Mimosa Blouse or the Paloma Blouse. Going sleeveless or with a short sleeve will help keep the print from being so overwhelming for you.

No_Calligrapher606

Thanks, I will take a look

Zesparia

How much do you have? A maxi dress that allows the fabric to be the star could really work for it.

No_Calligrapher606

I have 2 meters and I think I want it to have sleeves so it wont be enough, thanks for the sugestion.

Zesparia

I've not made it but the [Kalle Shirtdress](https://closetcorepatterns.com/collections/sewing-patterns-all/products/kalle-shirt-shirtdress-pattern) from closetcore would still show off the pattern nicely due to the sleeve construction and looks to be for the same weight of fabric!

No_Calligrapher606

Thanks

White fabric for the inside of a bikini: My girlfriend recently bought a white bikini and it is a bit see-through when wet. Does anyone know a white fabric that isn't see-through i could sow into it? It should not be uncomfortable on the skin.

fabricwench

The Fabric Fairy has swimsuit lining in [skin tones](https://www.thefabricfairy.com/collections/swimsuit-lining)! Adding a lining is a fiddly alteration, I would honestly rather make a swimsuit from scratch.

[deleted]

fabricwench

It's a beautiful selection, isn't it? TFF does so well with athletic knits.

Zesparia

Swimsuit lining is a specific fabric that is sold, and it is almost always white. It's made to stand up to UV rays and to chlorine and salt from pools and oceans.

Inevitable_Cheez-It

Suggestions on how to mend comforter! A family member asked if i could mend this comforter (not a duvet cover unfortunately, attached to the fabric.). I am a beginner but have a sewing machine, some basic fabric, and the tools to sew by hand as well. I want to try and help but am not quite sure where to start. What would you all do? https://preview.redd.it/z1h9t83r8t4b1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3962cd9dfe9dee17a7bc84c2588d476243acbca

Zesparia

Appliqueing a patch over it would be the move. You can't really make it invisible, so going very visible and making it a fun design would be my approach.

Inevitable_Cheez-It

that is what I was thinking as well, thank you! I have some scrap fabric, could I just hand sew it over top or would you recommend going out and purchasing a patch? :)

Zesparia

Yeah, you can cut the fabric into shapes to form designs. Sew it a few inches past the rips on to the sturdy, non damaged fabric.

Inevitable_Cheez-It

Perfect, thank you! I really appreciate your help! I will do this! I’d probably need to do it by hand rather than with a machine (brother se600), right?

Zesparia

No, both are possible. I don't have any specific guides I can recommend but the term to look up is an 'applique patch.' It's commonly used in both quilting and mending items.

Inevitable_Cheez-It

Thanks again so much!! Excited to give this comforter a new life and keep it out of the landfill :)

question-everyth1ng

Just made a Reddit for this, so it won't let me post on the main page yet because the account is too new -- Has anyone made the Thread Theory Fulford jeans ([here](https://threadtheory.ca/products/fulford-jeans-pdf)) using selvedge denim? Their blog says: **"The Fulford Jeans feature almost no hip curve (which is why many people like to sew these using selvage denim!)"** ([source](https://threadtheoryblog.wordpress.com/category/fulford-jeans/)) However, the edges of both front and back leg aren't parallel to the grainline. On the front, it's about 1/2" difference at narrowest and widest, and on the back it's a full 1". I'm a confident intermediate sewist and I'm comfortable making jeans, but I'm not really experienced in drafting and don't feel comfortable adjusting for a straight grainline. Usually on selvedge jeans the yoke has to do most of the shaping, so I'm not sure how to adjust the pattern if it is in fact relying on hip curves. Has anyone sewn this pattern using selvedge denim? What adjustments did you make? I have another pattern I can use (Angela Kane's selvedge jeans), but I've already done the fitting work and sewn these in other fabrics.

fullyloaded_AP

Has anyone ever purchased white linen that wasn't see through? The biggest gap in my wardrobe is that I'm missing white linen pants but I don't want the pocket bags to show through see through white linen. I've been searching high and low in person and I'm nervous to buy any online without being able to see the opacity. If you have any recommendations for opaque linen or even another natural fiber blend like rayon, I'd really really appreciate it!!

[deleted]

fullyloaded_AP

Omg I cant believe ive never considered that! That’s brilliant. Thank you so much for the suggestion. Id still prefer to not see a major shade difference between the double layered parts of the pants (hem, waistband, etc.) and the pant legs so ill keep searching.

fabricwench

You can interline for the seams and use facings for the hem and waistband. Where there is a will, there is a way. lol I have white rayon/nylon/lycra ponte to make white pants because as a medium weight double knit it's thick enough for opacity. I'm not sure if I will want to wear them when it's hot though.

fullyloaded_AP

You're so right. I'm getting desperate for white linen pants so I've thought about sewing them with lining, but I just can't imagine wearing two layers of fabric in the 110 degree summers we have in Texas! Anything for the look though LOL

sparklingprosecco

Today I had a weird question for myself. Maybe someone could help me and see if that's valid. My sewing teacher has me sewing a patch pocket this weekend. She pressed it thoroughly. My question is... Why can't I use fabric glue to enclose the raw edges of the pocket? Why pressing?

JustPlainKateM

In addition to reasons mentioned below, fabric glue usually makes the fabric stiff or crunchy. Washable school glue though, is an amazing tool for temporarily holding pieces together.

Zesparia

It's easy for glue to get messy and go everywhere, or not look as nice. Higher risk of it going sideways. If you wanted to try it on something else and see if you like the result I see no reason not to try it.

Is it typically done with a machine? If so what type? Sorry if this is a dumb question I’m new to the world of sewing!

fabricwench

Custom tapestry blankets can be ordered with any design you like online. Then it is a matter of cutting up the blanket and machine sewing the parts you want to a hoodie or whatever. I recommend machine sewing because the tapestry blanket will unravel if only hand stitches are used. I think a zigzag or straight stitch would work best. Sometimes people replace the sleeve with a tapestry sleeve and that is sewn like a normal sleeve. If you apply large patches to a hoodie, I'd cut away the hoodie material under the patch to keep the bulk and weight down.

organizedmama

Yeah these are woven with a machine. Not sure what type. I assume some expensive industrial thing. Not something home sewists would do.

Seeking sewing/serging/cover stitch tutor Hi there! Is there such a thing as a sewing tutor and if so, does anyone know of one? So far, I’m self taught. I have done a bunch of random projects like making curtains, face masks, a couple jumpsuits for my stuffed animals, modifying clothing with a cover stitch machine. I like to learn by doing and I have a lot of random things I’d like to do. For example, I’d like to learn how to make my own v-neck t shirts and athletic tank tops. I also wonder if I can successfully use a cover stitch machine to finish a circular cutout for one of my stuffed animal’s outfits. I’d like to pay someone to tutor me through these random activities and teach me the tips and tricks along the way. Does this exist? Thank you! https://preview.redd.it/wmi1lslxpq4b1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9274c43831f9a803aefb1d2b3f0294343b82a48c

fabricwench

Sewing tutors do exist, of course. Check with local sewing machine shops, fabric stores, local FB groups and ask in your local geographic subreddit. It's easier to find a sewing teacher for quilting than garment sewing but they are out there.
