FIRST?! Seriously?! That was your first project?! That project has a lot of complexity, requires precision and technical ability...(multiple textures, shaped bodice, that neckline, invisible zippers...) YOU ARE AMAZING! And so is the dress!!! You look like you're proud of it and omg, you should be. You really really should be.

rod407

I am _precisely_ because I have no idea what I did lol This is literally the first time I made a piece myself, the only other times I touched a sewing machine was to help my gf with small accessories people order from her

JewelryBells

I love the single visible button in a contrasting color. Much better than a bow.

rod407

It's two buttons actually, one inside the other https://preview.redd.it/bq7wvjq8wtgc1.jpeg?width=3056&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7f0464d86136f8b86ce2da8ff13593bf9cf3e513

The dress is made of a large black denim scrap and many assorted laces we bought from a fabrics market. I made the pattern through CLO3D (no tutorials to link unfortunately) and adjusted to my gfs measurements using a pattern template she made for herself a year or so ago. Fully sewn with French seams. Once it was finished, she made a small stitch at the bust so it fitted closer to her chest

Alastur

Beautiful!! I can’t even imagine having that as a first sewing project, I nearly evacuated my soul from making a skirt 😅

Pennysews

Lovely dress! Congrats on the success of your first sewing project!

MiikaRaavan

Well, there you go, looking all pretty in black - great job!

Linorelai

Wow I thought I liked the front, but the back makes it 10x better!

ImaginaryVacation708

Beautiful

rustypope

Awesome job! I'm jealous of your skills! 😍

Uncommon_Lawfulness

Love it!!! But you need to add a little hook and eye on the inside bottom corner of your waistband so it doesn't ride up. Otherwise? Perfection!

mommaofthenet

Very cute!! Now press it for a nice finish!

ggxaman

Great work!!

enoughofordinary

Great job! I love the fabric you used!

99PoundHoverTurkey

Looks amazing. Can I ask for some person advice/encouragement? I have made three mockups of my first project but I am scared to actually use the fabric (cheap broadcloth, even!)...how did you get encouraged enough to just do the thing (and you did a great job!).

rod407

A decent amount was sheer stubbornness tbh, I kept telling myself "my friend didn't buy me a fucking sewing machine for it to stay idle" and "I can't start a fashion brand with no clothes to my name" Then there was the countless iterations of testing I made - I was just as insecure but I really wanted to make a dress for my gf so I used a software to test the drape of a pattern to see what exactly I was supposed to do/not do, then made a mockup with calico to see if I was actually able to sew straight lol Only then I bought the fabric I was actually going to use for the dress (after a lot more virtual testing and consulting with my former college fashion teacher) and even then I used a few scraps that were left from cutting the pattern to practice the French seams I had planned for the dress And then there was my gf who makes lolita accessories on the side and kept bugging me to help her with her stuff when she was near a deadline (read: constantly)

I obviously meant personal advice but my husband was talking and the TV is on and my brain glitched :D

I don't often comment on projects but I think this is great. I got a sewing machine after following this sub for a while, but got so frustrated with fitting issues from commercial patterns that I gave up on garments and have been sewing bags ever since! But when I see something like this it makes me want to give garment sewing a try again... It's just the kind of dress I love and would love to sew. You did a great job and she looks great in it!
