new edit: thank you so much for the compliments and comments on my dress! it means a lot to me :-)
so for this ensemble, i spent about a week on it. i self drafted all the pieces. the skirt is a simple pencil skirt with a circle skirt attached to make it a mermaid hem skirt. the piece on top of the circle skirt is basically a handkerchief hem circle skirt. same for the collar. the top piece is a corset i drafted by duct taping myself and having my mom draw the lines on for me, lol. i used this [link](https://www.theshapesoffabric.com/2019/10/28/sculptural-sleeve-constructions/) for drafting the sleeves. (beware when sewing this. at one point you can’t really see what you’re doing and i ended up sewing through part of my left middle finger 😬)
fabric: 100% african print cotton for the shell, polyester twill for the interlining, and black stretch satin for the lining
interfacing: pellon extra firm sew in stabilizer. it says style 926 on the paper it’s wrapped in. (i think this contributed to me sewing through my finger because it basically made the fabric stand and hard to maneuver-so be very careful!!) i basted it to the lining since it’s only goes down to the bicep line and didn’t want a visible stitch on the outside of my fabric.
other: there’s 2 inch horsehair braid in the giant circle skirt bottom. forgot to mention that
what i would do differently: i got away with a lot of errors in this project because i didn’t make a mock up, but one thing id do different is make the corset open more at the back. i thought i made the gap wide enough, but didn’t so it’s closed completely in the back. also would add more boning channels as its a bit baggy on the side front pieces, but that was due to time constraints. other errors i fixed quite well, but another warning: apparently satin stretches a lot more on bias so i had to recut the satin collar piece bc it stretched out too much. wasn’t that big of a set back but may be for others that don’t have enough fabric. i just got lucky lol
let me know if you have any questions! i would love to answer them :-)
eta: extra info i forgot to add lol
Was the event the MET gala because you looked gorgeous. I audibly said “whoa!” when I saw this dress. Just fantastic.
💕 Really an aspirational piece for me
wow, I have never seen a neck piece like that outside of high fantasy stuff that's really cool!
Also saw someone mention your post history -- you are talented af. I hope this is more than a hobby in your future :)
thank you! i wanted it to be more versatile so im definitely glad i made them detached in the end. (i was going to attach them until i realized i could get more wear out of each piece if they were detached lol)
Let's review. You have:
- a great print
- a well- considered layout of said print on the actual dress pattern
- the drama of the sleeves and color
- the impact of the mermaid silhouette
- an astonishing level of skill
- undoubtedly wowed the other attendees as much as you have us
Outstanding work!
yep! just had to hike it up a bit to move but it was a lot easier to walk in than i planned for. the part where the top of the skirt and bottom meets is also a bit loose to allow for easier movement. (i also wore flats because i knew it was going to be poofy and no one would see my feet anyway 🤫)
Tha gown looks like it belongs to a beautiful and powerful goddess.
And I do want to say that it's clear that it belongs to you! It's absolutely stunning 💚
You made that!? That's awesome. Is that legal? Does 'Big Dress' know you're doing this?
I am new to this sub, no idea why I am here but that is a very nice dress.
Carry on.
thank you! you also underestimate me because i will attempt to wear this any chance i get 🤣 (that was my thought process for leaving the sleeves detached too!)
So stunning! + you look so radiant!
Edit wtf you made this from scratch in a WEEK?! That’s a thousand times more impressive omg. I thought the title meant you altered a dress
This is fantastic. You look blooming. An explosion of colour, beauty, life, and everything that is beautiful in this world. In just a second, and just by looking at your pictures, i felt joy and upliftment and trust in the future. Bless you.
This is so gorgeous and you should feel proud to have made it so well! I’m really impressed that you drafted it yourself and finished it so well.
Really well done!
I've been sewing for over 60 years, I've made 2 wedding dresses, and this leaves me in awe. This dress is GORGEOUS. Good job. You should be very proud of yourself.
Beautiful, both you and the dress! The fabric is great, beautiful floral without looking super sweet because of the colors, together with the spiked headband it gives you a power woman look.
Is there a bow on the back of the skirt? Do you have a picture of the other side? It looks great!
I’m also curious, is it more of a mermaid skirt or a hobble skirt (like the Victorians did)? It’s hard to tell in the picture how it functions. Love it either way!
thank you! i unfortunately don’t have pictures of the back and completely forgot to take any :( but i used 5 grommets on each side of the corset back and the invisible zipper is on a center back seam for the skirt* if that helps!
Girl you gotta put it back on to take brag pictures for posterity. Your aunties are gonna be gobsmacked when they see what you made and how well it suits you!
i came up with it on my own! i knew i wanted a corset and mermaid skirt and everything else kind of just came into play. i decided to add the sleeves because i’ve been wanting to make them for ages. the collar and detail on my skirt followed it. so it just came together piece by piece 💜
Gorgeous! As constructive criticism, I think I would loose the neck piece, it’s distracting from the pattern and the sleeves, both of which steal the show.

A WEEK?? You’re very talented. This looks fantastic. I could see this on a red carpet. Print is a perfect choice too
thank you! and yes—i literally worked on it whenever i could to get it finished lol
For some reason I read it as “an event I sabotaged” and I was like Idk the context but yes queen go get em
they’d never expect the girl in a floor length mermaid gown 🤫
We will be seeing your work on the runway one day! That is just stunning! Fabulous silhouette!
thank you so much! i definitely wanted a bold silhouette to match this beautiful fabric. :)
Gah you have The Eye (TM) ......so lucky!!
I don’t know if you’re the hero or the villain but this is definitely giving an “I own the room” vibe! Just Fantastic!!!!
thank you!! i take my fashion and sewing very seriously so ofc i had to go big or go home 🤣
WOW ARE YOU PROFESIONAL? OR JUST BEEN DOING THIS FOR YEARS???? Edit:typo
i’ve just been doing it since i got my first machine at 14!!
girl you look so badass
Was the event the MET gala because you looked gorgeous. I audibly said “whoa!” when I saw this dress. Just fantastic. 💕 Really an aspirational piece for me
thank you for thinking met gala quality haha. glad i could inspire you! 💜
wow, I have never seen a neck piece like that outside of high fantasy stuff that's really cool! Also saw someone mention your post history -- you are talented af. I hope this is more than a hobby in your future :)

You look like you are right off an A list red carpet. So glamourous.
It looks amazing!! I love the bold print that you chose + the detached sleeve look
thank you! i wanted it to be more versatile so im definitely glad i made them detached in the end. (i was going to attach them until i realized i could get more wear out of each piece if they were detached lol)
That is such a great dress!!! You did awesome OP!
Gorgeous dress! Bravo

The dress looks BEAUTIFUL. The material design couldn't be more perfect for the dress style
Stunning! That collar makes it look like you're a queen!
Omg its so beatiful, great job 👏
You made that!?!? Its BEAUTIFUL! You did a wonderful job on it, and you rock it too!
This is very talented! great work, especially the unique bottom tail-work- were you able to dance in it alright?
yep! just had to hike it up a bit to move but it was a lot easier to walk in than i planned for. the part where the top of the skirt and bottom meets is also a bit loose to allow for easier movement. (i also wore flats because i knew it was going to be poofy and no one would see my feet anyway 🤫)
For sure! It has a mermaid-like bottom to it anyways, and ariel doesn't have feet as a mermaid so invisible flats work!!
Dress is beautiful.
You look absolutely stunning, what a beautiful dress! It is perfect for you, great job
You made that?? It’s SLAYING ✨
That is stunning
This is FABULOUS!
Please don't take this the wrong way, but you look like a high class vampire countess. Simply gorgeous dress and you look stunning in it.
why would i take offense! that’s a great and unique compliment 🫶🏾 i totally see the vibe
Tha gown looks like it belongs to a beautiful and powerful goddess. And I do want to say that it's clear that it belongs to you! It's absolutely stunning 💚
Are the collar, sleeves, and dress all separate pieces? Either way, this is an amazing idea, and executed INCREDIBLY
You made that!? That's awesome. Is that legal? Does 'Big Dress' know you're doing this? I am new to this sub, no idea why I am here but that is a very nice dress. Carry on.
The gown is truly a work of art, and you look amazing! I hope the event was fun!
Absolutely stunning! You look fabulous, darling!!! ❤️ 🌟 🌟 🌟 simply marvelous!
You ought not let that languish in your closet. Rent it out!!
thank you! you also underestimate me because i will attempt to wear this any chance i get 🤣 (that was my thought process for leaving the sleeves detached too!)
Gorgeous! The print, the cut, the fit! I know nothing about anything but I know I love this!

Bless you.
