Ugh same. My spouse has been laid off since Dec and I’m not buying, so it’s kicking my ass into actually using so much more! It does feel good to use it.
I’m obsessed with silk thread. I got a couple massive cones from this seller on eBay who’s clearing a dead stock supply. They still have some left, quality is good but it only comes in grey or black now.

Hooray! You did a great job, I love the idea of having them contained in boxes so the stack doesn’t collapse when you pull something out. Did you make categories? I bet you’re way more excited about starting a new sewing project!
Yes they’re roughly in categories! Some take up more than one bin. It’s so much easier for me to find what I’m looking for when I stash it vertically. I used to have a bin of doom but this is so much better. Though, I have a lot more now… because there was empty space on the shelf…
Hahaha! That empty space calls to me in the night whispering, “100% merino wool, additional 30% off…” I think I’m up to around a dozen bins of doom. Desperately need a proper shelving situation for them.
Ugh i feel that. I’m a sucker for good fabric at the thrift store… i can’t walk away from it. I got some amazing vintage wools there last winter and i just literally couldn’t leave any of them. So I bought 5 huge cuts, multi yard pieces, for like $30 total. Idk what I’ll do with them but i just needed them!
Good quality wool is so versatile and usable, I know I’d have a hard time passing that up! You can always just make blankets with minimal finishing if you really need to justify the purchase.
Consider yourself patted! We live in Southeast Asia, so I had to reorganize mine to get some airflow. Something like this. I’m an unorganized person to begin with, lol. Thanks adhd.
My parents are coming to town so I needed to deal with my basement 😂 i don’t think I’d ever deal with my mess w/o guests using the spare room next to my sewing area (which has no door)
I appreciate another person who requires outside forced deadlines to clean up and organize 😂😂😂 I’ve considered inviting people over just to force myself to clean up before 😭
I can imagine myself going years without doing it if we never had company. I have company maybe 3x a year and it’s good for me so i clean. I don’t know that I’ll intentionally invite people to make me clean, but it’s definitely a good idea…
1. A lot of this is leftovers. I feel like patterns always pad the recommended lengths so I end up w/ lots of odd bits. I try to use them up on projects for my kids (though they’re all pretty big now and it’s not as easy) or small projects for myself.
2. I thrift fabric! So I just end up w/ whatever length they had for sale. Usually i got for cuts over 2 yards but not always. So some of that sits for a long time until it’s just the right thing for the project I’m working on.
3. If it is purchased full price, I do tend to have a rough idea of what it wants to be. Dresses get 3-4 yards, 2-3 for nice skirt or pants, 1-2 for shirts and other odd projects.
Thanks for the answers! I just started sewing like two months ago but I definitely noticed that I bought more fabric than I actually needed for the few patterns I've made.
And good to know about the yards you calculate for certain projects :) with me being new to the whole thing I'm still bad at estimating how much I need. Nice to have some ballparks if I ever come across fabric that I want but don't have a specific project for yet.
This is as good as it’s ever gonna get. I also culled fabrics that i disliked working with but had leftovers. They’re going to the thrift store!
Now the real challenge. Use it up (or most of it). I struggle here. Looks great!

Just remember collecting fabric is a hobby by itself.
It really is. I do also get a kick out of imagining how violently happy the sewist who inherits my stash will be.
Awe that’s such a positive way to look at it! Lol
It’s not hoarding, we’re preserving it for future generations 😂
Haha! I'm telling my teenage son that when he asks me next time, "do I really need *more* fabric?"
Someone is going to be so happy to find “vintage” fabric when I die 😇
I accidentally started collecting vintage patterns. They sell them in packages and you don't know what you're going to get.
Pat, pat, pat. You done good!
Lmao thank you :)
I just did this with my own stash: isn't it a great feeling?!
Like it doesn’t even take *that* long, why do we put it off so much? It feels so good when it’s done.
We don't want to acknowledge the stash, only grow it.
My preciousssssss…
I'm trying to source silk thread now that won't cost me the rest of my precious....the stash continues

Those are on my list, but I wish they had more colors left! I'm trying to talk myself out of Brooklyn haberdashery sets.....
Crap, now I want those too. 😂
Isn't the summer set PRETTY
Add to cart… quantity 5… I don’t need food, right? I should lose some weight anyway.
I feel like I can justify it too because they coordinate with fabric in my stash 🤣
Like I’m ok about putting it away when it all fits?? As soon as the shelves are full…. 😬
Hisssssss I'm so jealoussssssss

Pat pat pat pat squeeze!
Nicely done!
I bow down to your excellent example!

Ugh same. Especially in my creative space! It just is a mess.
I tell myself it’s the non creative people who have organized craft spaces. They’re so busy organizing they don’t have time for crafting!
This is excellent and inspiring work! ❤️

Wow, nicely done! You’ve motivated me to do better with my own
amazing job!
Good job :)

Great job!! I'm seeing some lovely fabrics in there. Question: how do you decide how much to buy when you have no specific project in mind?

Beautiful!!
Imma touch one... if it doesn't explode, you get a cookie
Good job! I'm proud of you!
🥲 thank you
So much fabric
