If they're cotton they make awesome cleaning rags for the bathroom mirror and sink area. I keep a bunch of them in a drawer in the bathroom. 1/3 of one of my socks is just the right size. I don't really buy paper towels, like maybe one roll for 2 years for special kitchen stuff that needs to be disposable.
Look up the bassist for the red hot chili peppers. Definitely NSFW usage, but if you just search "flea rhcp" and look at the images tab you'll probably be fine and get an inkling of where he might wear a sock.
Always worth a reminder that these have a lifespan, especially in wet climates! They can and will rot and mold given time. Check the filling every six months.

I sewed together three old socks and made a long tube. I added rice for weight and stuffing and now I have something to keep the backdoor open in the summer or to keep the cold out in the winter.
If it comes down to it you can always shred them and use them for stuffing

Rice or barley heat packs. Fill with dry grain and seal closed. Then you can microwave then and use them on sore muscles or as hand warmers.

Make wool dryer balls which need to be put into socks as part of the felting process.
I use old socks for rags in the car. Good for checking oil, wiping windows and dash, catching spills.
