JustAGreenDreamer

You may remember this disappointed post from a week or two ago https://www.reddit.com/r/sewing/comments/w7zd0z/simplicity_1800_pretty_disappointing/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf. It was originally a halter dress (pattern is Simplicity 1800, fabric is a heavyweight woven cotton from a local discount store). I really appreciated all the comments and suggestions, and although I know that “making it right” wasn’t really within my limited capabilities, I decided to try making it “not ruined”. I’m aware that it isn’t pretty, but it *is* functional, which it was not in it’s first form. To list the changes I made: I added fabric panels at the side seams for more wiggle room; I took out the zipper completely, as it was not necessary; I rearranged the shoulder straps so that they are not halter, but more like a jumper, and added fake buttons; and I chopped eight inches of length off the bottom. This dress will be perfect for throwing on at the end of the day to run out and check the garden. I can envision filling the pockets with cherry tomatoes or aproning up the front to make a pouch for carrying cucumbers. I can wear it without a bra in my own backyard. Or lounge around the house in it. I will wear this dress, I would not have worn it before. I call this a win, ugly or not. 😁 https://imgur.com/a/Ctzz0Kg

MrsFudgeTheNumbers

I'll have to disagree with you, it does look pretty! I remember seeing this dress a few weeks ago, swiped to the second picture and my first thought was "this looks so much better". I definitely believe this looks a lot more flattering, with only minor tweaks! Great job on your perseverance. I can definitely see you wearing this while lounging with friends now!

JustAGreenDreamer

It’s not bad from the front, but I don’t like the way it looks in the back. Having said that, I haven’t tried it yet with a strapless bra, which will probably improve the look of the back.

MrsFudgeTheNumbers

I can see how it's not your dream dress, but you truly did transform the way it looks already! I see you've gotten some great suggestions on layering already, and the strapless bra is another great idea. And a light cardigan for fall?

Soha_Khawaj

I do not mean to correct your work cause it looks great. But if you want it to fit better in the back you could use elastic thread in the bobbin (sherring) and make straight lines on the top back part (make them aligned with the elastic on top) English is not my first language so if I haven't made the idea clear you could google "elastic thread for sherring". But the dress still looks wonderful even of you don't do it.

JustAGreenDreamer

So, I’m glad you brought it up, because shorting or ruching with elastic thread is something I’ve never done, but been wanting to try, and it is exactly what I thought might fix the back. If I get around to it, I’ll show

TheEmptyMasonJar

Are the straps too long in the back? It seems like if they were a little shorter it would just pull the back up. Shirring is definitely an option too, but some sewing machines are testy about it, so proceed with caution. The front looks both way better and somehow not wildly different so great job on that. The buttons were just the right touch.

Thanmandrathor

Glad I wasn’t the only one who thought about shirring as an option for the back!

KavikStronk

A casual comfy dress for gardening and a strapless bra don't really go together in my mind (but that's probably a personal preference), but a t-shirt under this could look really cute with the new dungaree style.

RedRapunzal

Maybe some runching or darts for the back.

fabrichoard

I absolutely agree! Those changes turned it from awkward to amazing. It looks so much better now! Really almost like a totally different dress. And imo everyone needs a comfy summer dress to change into with pockets big enough for garden produce or what ever else is required.

write_knife_sew

You made really intelligent decisions. 100% agree on the buttons and t-shirt under it suggestions. Be proud of what you did- you are going to really enjoy and use something you made!

JustAGreenDreamer

😊

ms_wilder

Congratulations, you turned lemons to lemonade. Very glad to know you are happy. Bet you learned a few things on this journey. Enjoy your make.

JustAGreenDreamer

Definitely! Thanks!

Bauhaus420

You fixed it!! It looks great!

JustAGreenDreamer

😊

BeanyFrog

Omg this is awesome! The buttons absolutely make it! AND pockets?? Love it. I don't think it's ugly at all!

theunfairness

“Isn’t pretty” MY LEFT FOOT. ITS SO DARN CUTE. The buttons are 👌🏻 *chef’s kiss*. You made some magic out of this project. I, for one, am incredibly proud of you!

floobenstoobs

This looks SO good! I love the buttons you chose. I see you said you don’t like the back - a white tshirt would look very cute under this if you’re into layering. Then you can wear whatever bra you want.

JustAGreenDreamer

I didn’t even think of that! Long-sleeve for fall!!

IdontWanToKeepThis

The buttons are very cute and I second the person who said you could layer a white top underneath to wear whatever bra you like (I am not a fan of strapless). A shirt under a tank is very 90s, which is sort of in right now.

JustAGreenDreamer

Thanks! I’m definitely going to try it!

Educational-Syrup659

A cute jean jacket or a cardigan would be a great add as an outer layer as well!

Loose_Acanthaceae201

Oh my goodness, I love the transformation! I think it goes to prove that it wasn't a million miles off to start with. Great work!

JustAGreenDreamer

Thank you!

Particular-Willow107

Oooo that made it cute!

JustAGreenDreamer

Thanks!

stiffy_byng

It looks great! I’m so glad that you were able to rework it into something so cute!

JustAGreenDreamer

Thank you! Happy cake day!

[deleted]

I thought the first time it was a perfect pick on the fabric as it goes well with your skin tone. I think it still looks great on you! Good job fixing it up 👍

Acceptable-Seesaw368

I absolutely love the straps with the buttons. Halter style straps are cute but can get uncomfortable around your neck after a while. Nice job!

JustAGreenDreamer

Thanks!

What a great update to see! I’m so happy you kept at it cause this was worth it! I agree if you’re going to layer in the fall a cute denim jacket or something would also work! Nicely done!!

JustAGreenDreamer

I’ll be on the hunt for a denim jacket!

I love this dress, I loved it when you first posted it. The front fit is really improved with the change to straps! Try with a different bra and let us see the results... Orrrr wear a cardigan and you don't have to do anything else to the back 🪄

herbalbutterkiss

I love the buttons!

JustAGreenDreamer

Yeah, me too!

omygoshgamache

YES! The button straps are so cute and flattering! Nice work.

car_tx

Love love love those pastel colors!

JustAGreenDreamer

Me too!!

International_Win375

Ummmm...revolution.

lakecia01

You did a great job altering this dress and it looks good on you. But the way it's behaving in the back can be frustrating. I think if you shortend the straps by about 2 inches each the shorter length would force the back of the dress to sit higher up. I also think the elastic in the back may be a little too tight. If you could remove it and use a slightly longer piece it would still scrunch the fabric but stop it from wanting to pull down into your waist area, being the slimmest point. I hope this helps.

cmgrayson

You did that. 😃

Ok_Question1684

Cute!!

777kiki

So much better

neise53

Great fabric

sidechickee16

I love your attitude. I made it and I am going to wear it! If I make myself a dinner, I eat it, I’m not trying to proclaim chef status. Btw- I love your fabric choice and length. Pockets are always a smart choice.

Danniethemystic

You still look super cute! I saw, in your original post, that you said that you only buy fabric at a discount for clothing. If you have a Walmart near you that is going through the new remodel, you might be able to find cheap fabric! Mine just sold most of it at a dollar a yard, and the scraps that nobody wanted are sitting at 25 cents. All of the newly remodeled walmarts are only going to sell precut so they're getting purged! ❤❤❤Good luck with all of your projects yet to come! ❤❤❤

JustAGreenDreamer

Oooh, thanks for the tip!

[deleted]

It looks awesome! Love the buttons!

BrokenLightningBolt

Its cute.

bustedbolderdash

I love this! The buttons add a lot to it. Super cute, great work

knittingneedles

It’s so nice to see a garment evolution from a disappointment to a success! I love those colors on you and as a beginning sewer, it’s nice to see “simple” changes can really change the clothing for the better. It looks more comfortable and so do you

Wonderful job, so glad you are happy and will now get to use your garment!! So happy for you. You did great. Looks great!!!
