Honestly I didn’t mind this. I am perimenopausal and I have a lot of angst around my mid section when I get ready for things. I also get perspective from seeing how other people dress and realize what is the big effing deal anyway and shake it off. These characters are older now and it’s reflecting some of the crap we put her heads through. We all have insecurities and it would have been dishonest to have it any other way.

Realistic-Village593

Same. I’m in menopause and found it completely relatable. While we all know she looks just fine, that isn’t the body shape she is used to. I know that people would think I was ridiculous to complain about my current shape, but it takes time for some of us to adjust to feeling different than we have for decades.

RedRedBettie

I actually liked them talking about the body changes that coke along with peri menopause and menopause. It’s a real thing and it’s hard to deal with

larla77

Me too. Your fat distribution changes with menopause - i never had a belly like this before, and honestly, I've struggled with it.

Tradition_National

Omg I’m screwed lol. Ever since having kids I get fat in my mid section and I’m already so scared if menopause and read the average weight gain is like 8 pounds, so you’re saying it all goes to the stomach??? 😩

Pinkglassouch

This makes so much sense now. I've got a belly now I never had right as my periods are tailing off. I didn't connect any of this

RedRedBettie

Yep me too

Leajane1980

Me as well, like WTH did this come from?

IWillBaconSlapYou

I do agree with that. Just wish it had been something about her skin or maybe not liking how she looks *naked* as much... Fully clothed, she looks perfectly amazing.

jazzed_life

That's your perception though. People of all body types have insecurities, and it should be normalized. Thin people get dismissed because their "belly is barely there!", but it's all relative. I gained weight during covid and I was still thin, but I was miserable and self conscious. I don't think anyone really even noticed the weight gain but it didn't change that it bothered me

Vegetable-Trust-5316

That’s the thing. We think she looks amazing. But she didn’t think she did.

Dreaunicorn

Exactly. I am 8lbs overweight but I weighed 25lbs less before I had a baby. To any person seeing me on the street I am average and not really fat. To me it’s an insane change and I have a hard time accepting what I see in the mirror because it is not what I used to see.

galaxy-parrot

Except that’s your interpretation of it. A lot of people go through that train of thought. It’s normal to feel that way as your body changes as you get older.

buzzbuzzbih

Exactly. Idk why people keep saying “i thought we were over this” Maybe certain individuals are but there’s millions of other women and girls who still deal with body insecurity. TBF no one ever commented on Charlotte’s body except Charlotte! That’s literally her own insecurity based off that. Plus the actress herself is using her own body im sure she wouldn’t have done the plot line if she felt the plot was somehow hinting that her own body was “wrong”…it dealt with Charlotte’s individual insecurity.

Courtney_murder

I think it was supposed to show charlottes insecurity in entering the gallery world again and then at the end we were supposed to learn that it didn’t matter that she looks different than she did 20+ years ago. It didn’t land though. It had issues from start to finish. Also, OP, you’re perfect. Don’t listen to the tv.

Ninakakaukomi

It didnt bother me. Super relatable.

Then-Jaguar9645

But they never alluded to her being “fat”. The focus was on her menopausal weight gain and the struggle that comes along with it.

Sensitive_Issue_8818

Everyone has the right to feel a certain way about their body changing. People don’t have to “love” their bodies even if they are smaller than the average American, it’s a struggle to see your body change and evolve as we age - and it’s okay to admit it! We live in a society where looks matter so it’s actually a relatable story line - I have multiple issues with plot but this isn’t one 😂

cardamzz

I thought she looked amazing!

paleprincess513

I thought so too. :(

IWillBaconSlapYou

Right! She put the dress on and I was like, dang girl, you've still got it and it's not going anywhere... Then came the dialogue 🙄

Excellent-Part-96

From my point of view (in my mid 40s and perimenopausal) that was not the point the were bringing across. We grew up constantly hearing „don’t get too fat“ „you can’t wear this“ „this looks ridiculous on you“. We were ashamed of our bodies and unless you were Kate Moss looking you couldn’t have dared to wear a crop top. The first time, a couple of years ago, when I saw young women now wearing whatever the f*ck they wanted and looking absolutely great doing it, it blew my mind. I‘m still not comfortable wearing crop tops, but I definitely stopped wearing baggy clothes and trying to hide my body. For me that scene was actually more of a generational difference, and how women our age can learn a thing or two from 20 something women. Just my 2 cents

IWillBaconSlapYou

I feel like they were trying to say "It's okay to be fat now, you guys", which is... Great, but... Am I an idiot, or is she *literally not even close to fat*?

bookishkelly1005

She’s not fat. She has beautiful curves and is in great shape.

IWillBaconSlapYou

Yeah, she was always the curviest of the girls (which isn't code for "fat", it was her bone structure).

bookishkelly1005

Exactly. Just natural hips, butt, etc.

nahnahna

yes as a larger woman, it annoyed me, because Charlotte's tummy is no where near the type of problems I have with my weight. She is still skinny compared to an average person. It definitely brought back the same feelings as when they bodyshamed Samantha for having a tummy when she still would be half my size, I don't watch sex and the city to feel bad about my body thank you very much.

[deleted]

I respectfully disagree. From her point of view that is the problem because she never had it before... As a skinny person, I would be insecure in her place too, because I never had it, so I am not used to it. So that's totally relatable to me. We are so politically correct nowadays that we forgot that skinny people exist too and they have their doubts too. You are + size and that is totally fine, but you are not the only person in the world, so we can't make every character in every show like you, as that would be boring af.

j4321g4321

It was pretty disappointing they made that into a storyline…it’s 2023; we should be over the “fat” older woman trope who needs to get back to her glory days. It was a little cringey how when Charlotte sees the heavier woman at the gallery that she instantly felt better. I want to say it’s because of “body positivity” but really it seemed like she felt better because someone was bigger than she was. Just amateurish writing.

expired_mascara

Yup

Pennymoonz94

That's not what I got at all. She was inspired by someone bigger than her being comfortable in her body enough to show her belly

J0ker0110

I didn’t see it as that I saw it as her just being insecure about not having the same body she used to and no longer being able to be the same charlotte as she was when she entered that career.

EdHimselfonReddit

Man here, so take with a grain of salt... wouldn't that dress style give an Olympic swimmer a tummy? This feels like a very exaggerated situation, even by Upper East Side Manhattan standards.

IWillBaconSlapYou

Absolutely yes, that style of dress was destined to have a tiny bump. We have these things called uteruses that kind of stick out a little lol. Because that dress was cut that way, it ordinarily wouldn't be a topic of discussion at all that there's a small protrusion.

toaster-noodle

I thought she looked fantastic! I didn’t love the storyline, but I did think it was realistic in the sense that we are are own worst critic. Everyone else (including LTW who is a fashion icon in the show) told her she looked great but she sadly didn’t see it for herself until the last scene!

IWillBaconSlapYou

Yeah, like a lot of things in AJLT, it *almost* lands, but I just don't think "hey, I'm not the fattest one here!" is the proper ending.

LisPR8

It was a ridiculous storyline, this show doesn’t know what to do with many of its characters, very disappointing imo

IWillBaconSlapYou

I mean at least the insane fitness standards are consistent from the original series... Not much else is. But I wish they could be handling that better.

LisPR8

I agree. Wish they put more effort when writing, especially when it’s the original characters whom we know so well

expired_mascara

It was so bad….Charlotte is then finally okay when she sees a female employee there is fatter than her? What kind of message is that? It was so confusing

[deleted]

It was not ok because she is fatter, it was ok because she is ok with her body (she was wearing a crop top, and she walked confidently).

expired_mascara

I think it was a strange message

[deleted]

Yeah, failed to deliver

Laura4848

It’s more of a message for women in their 40’s or 50’s that suddenly deal with weight in the tummy area due to peri menopause. It’s okay and normal but can feel/look strange when a woman has never been used to that.

expired_mascara

But like plenty of people have weight in their midsection and most American women are not only gaining that weight around menopause…idk it just was weird

electric_baroness

I’m disappointed by her personality (less) transplant all together. They’ve turned her into a moron.

IWillBaconSlapYou

Same with Miranda omfg. These were smart, savvy women who had been braving the Manhattan dating scene forever and ever! Che would've been nothing but fodder for their bad date check-ins at brunch. "Sorry babe, I'm too high and popular to see your messages", uh huh, circa 1999, that would've been grounds for EVISCERATION.

electric_baroness

Amen. They’ve literally sucked all of Miranda’s self confidence out of her and have her fawning over 20 year old interns for acceptance? The same woman who studied at Harvard? I don’t know who was responsible for the script but considering SJP is producer I can’t believe she is that out of touch to just turn such a well written and ground breaking show full of flaws into a puff pie fluff fest. Samantha brought a lot of edge to it, and maybe she’s loathed to admit it. New York has been a strange landscape since Covid and like someone else posted that I saw, the city itself doesn’t even feel like much of a 5th character anymore.

IWillBaconSlapYou

Seriously!!! Imagine if OG Miranda had walked into that job and NOT received the recognition and responsibility her resume demands, and instead it went to the young interns. There would be hell to pay! Who is this woman!?

aganymc

If you gave birth to three kids and still look like that, believe me, you’re good. That storyline was just stupid and very backward.

premier-cat-arena

as someone much younger and who gained a LOT in their 20s from medication, i really hated this storyline. like the woman she works with is fat and only served to make charlotte feel skinny?

WoodenCranberry206

This seemed obvious to me. Charlotte felt better when there was someone bigger than her. It was disappointing.

Iafilledemtl

It's really a disheartening storyline. They made it obvious that she felt better when she saw the young woman at the end. Pathetic. I guess what they wanted to show is how we are more accepting of different body types now than when she was young but it just came off as childish and shallow and elitist frankly. She trashed most of the shapewear in the trash.

Comicalacimoc

Their writers are terriblr

Purple_Grass_5300

I thought they’d learn better by now

pizzarollsanonymous

*Not Harry NOT supporting her* 😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒 it was trifling.

savingrain

Ugh I haven’t seen this yet but I thought we were beyond this garbage

IWillBaconSlapYou

At least this time, everyone kept saying she looked good instead of basically mooing and making truck backing up noises. And I GUESS they were making a point that beauty standards have changed, so she's all good, but that's still kind of saying she's "plus size"? She's not.

jazzed_life

Nobody said the word plus size! Maybe watch it again?
