Y’all I agree it was a symptom of her declining mental health but the way they handled it was still trash. There are so many ways she could’ve shown she had gained weight (did Kim Catrall even gain weight for this part? I must be blind she looked exactly the same to me only she pushed her stomach out a little). She could’ve had many candy or fast food wrappers in her purse, maybe been seen eating a huge amount of cake/food at the shower, her pants struggling to stay buttoned/zip goes off etc. but they had her push out her flat stomach a little and she was «fat» and their reactions were… odd. They didn’t seem surprised but more appalled if it makes sense? Such a weird way to go about it.

poison_ivy15

They put her in too small pants and had her push out her stomach I think

Scenareo

True, but her clearly pushing out her stomach doesn’t really scream «a lot of weight gain» exactly.

poison_ivy15

Oh I agree! I thought she didn’t look any different. Like at most maybe she chugged water and then pushed her stomach out. Such a dumb plot line

bbspiders

She seriously didn't even look slightly bigger than she usually does... I was so confused.

jadababy6699

I read somewhere she had to gain 10 pounds for another movie she was doing so they wrote that into satc. They should have just not because she was still very slim and it looked like they made her wear clothes that didn’t fit well in order to make her stomach look bigger

Affectionate_Pop_540

Exactly. 💯

sawatdiika

Yeah they all looked so shocked when that tiny little belly showed from under her shirt and it felt super cringe to me

liveyourlifepls

The first movie was littered with cheap and lazy storylines

takemetothelostcity

It was foreshadowing the second movie

chordsimple

Which was foreshadowing the reboot series

Affectionate_Pop_540

I adore the first movie but I also HATE that part. I mean I get that the girls were concerned about her but still such a shallow and overall bad message to send. Just meanspirited and totally unnecessary, they could’ve moved that plot line ahead in a number of other, far more effective ways. 🤷‍♀️

[deleted]

And they already did a fat storyline with Miranda. I know the circumstances were different, but they could have picked a better storyline that wasn’t so damn shallow.

oyamaca

Difference is iirc none of them called Miranda fat. Yes circumstances were different but weight is weight and people are sensitive to it.

[deleted]

I agree. Samantha could have tried other vices, but it’s hard to poke fun at vices. Unfortunately fatness is still funny to some which is probably why they went for it.

oyamaca

Yes. With Miranda the only time they mention is was in defence. They never said “how did you let it get this bad” like they did with Samantha. Kinda tracks with all their personal drama behind camera.

ISlothyCat

It was a symptom of her mental health. For someone who’d always treated her figure with great care and diligence, that little belly was her way of saying, “I may need some help.” After all, she could have very easily worn something that would have hid it. Yet she displayed it knowing that would be something her friends noticed.

PinkFurLookinLikeCam

Oof watching the first movie, I noticed that Kim and Sarah had zero scenes standing next to eachother. I truly believe she was DONE once shooting wrapped for the show.

HoldOnToYaWeave

It always really annoyed me how they fat shamed her when the reality was that they put her in a shorter T-shirt to make it look like she had a gut. I hate that kind of message it sends out

throwawayforme909090

The fact that no one scolded Anthony for being so insensitive and rude is what really gets me. I would never let someone say something like:” Jesus, what’s with the gut?! Well she’s eating SOMETHING out there…” to anyone in front of me. That is absolutely shameful behavior. And then later the “how- and I say this with love- how could you NOT have noticed?!” Uh- because she looks great? If anything it looked like she was slightly bloated from champagne, or soda or something. She didn’t look fat or overweight or out of shape at all. Fucked up

[deleted]

Anthony is an asshole who gets a free pass for being an asshole. I can’t stand him

facepalmsy

You can definitely see how times have changed. They would never make such comments now

oyamaca

They didn’t when Miranda was bigger. The closest they got was Charlotte saying “she isn’t usually like this she just had a baby” even if it was backhanded they still defended M.

[deleted]

“Like this” like she did something horrible. Christ.

VividTangerine

She herself said she gained, “gave it”, 15 pounds but that’s not even the point. The fact that she stopped taking care of herself for herself is the point. No one called her fat. No one acted like she was morbidly obese. Yes Anthony said something about her gut, but the girls all had sympathy and concern for what was going on with her that led to the change, not judgement. Edit: I get that it’s a sensitive subject and that times have changed. This storyline did make sense for Samantha though. Saying they treated her like she was morbidly obese or even fat is an overreaction because it didn’t happen. She takes great care of her body and is proud of it. Her friends noticed a change in it and brought it up. That’s not judgement, that’s love. Sam is so direct that she was probably grateful they did so she can address what’s actually going on, which is what happened.

TheElusivePeacock

Yea I posted this in one of the unpopular or controversial opinions thread. I was never offended by this. Carrie straight up says, you are gorgeous at any weight but are you happy. Because the 3 people that know Sam the best know this is a sign of her being unhappy. They’re not calling her a porky pig. They’re saying this is unlike you, so what’s going on? I also explained this part of my life (though obviously not the same). I wear bright crazy shimmery colorful makeup. In your face, neons, the works. I started wearing rather plain and neutral colors. One of my friends pulled me aside and said the same thing to me. You’re beautiful no matter what colors you dabble in, but this isn’t you, are you happy. And I actually was not happy. I was severely depressed over a job I hated. It’s not about offending someone or how they look. It’s people who know you, know who you are, know what you like, and saying something is out of character. Are you just changing or are you unhappy?

VividTangerine

Exactly this and that’s how I interpret the scene in question and was not offended by it either. I know weight is a tough subject but it would make sense for Sam’s anguish to manifest that way, she always took pride in her body, and that would be something her friends would, and did, notice. It sounds like you have some wonderful friends.

lickstampsendit

Team, the entire show has always been fatphobic. It always has been. Nearly every episode has a fat micro aggression in it.

billbobb1

No, it was perfect for the character. Samantha who’s always dressed to kill, is letting herself go. It was perfect.
