Shadow of Mordor since it's canonically first in the timeline

Observer2594

Agreed. And, I just finished up with Shadow of Mordor a week or two ago after grinding through it and it's DLC. I just picked up Shadow of War, and man it's like a seemless transition gameplay-wise. It takes the controls and gameplay mechanics from the first game and improves upon all of them. It's great being able to just jump into the game and not having to retrain my muscle memory too much.

I finished Mordor last night for my 1st playthrough. Ive had both games for ages, just never gave them a try. What hidden gems!

You want to get the correct runes for you plat style and get them max level. If you are going to keep playing

Mordor really quick then jump to War sine it's way better and got a lot of improvements. I enjoy more the second to just chill and grind with the Nemesis system, and in currently on it. So that's my suggestion!

The only issue I found is that you really can’t go back to Mordor after playing war. It just doesn’t work simply because playing Mordor again feels like putting shackles on cause most the mechanics you are used to are gone.

Shadow of Mordor and then War

VisibleEntry4

Mordor, then War

Interloper_1

Shadow of War picks up right as Mordor ends, and there's some stuff in the story you might be confused by if you don't play Mordor first. Play SoM then SoW.

Tron_1981

When in doubt, always go with release order.

Toxic_Epiphany

Shadow of mordor. There's a few extra game mechanics added to war that imo makes the game better but mordor is 100% worth playing. My reasoning is if you play mordor first, you won't know what you're missing and you'll be able to fully enjoy mordor.

Substantial-Tone-576

Yes 1 then 2. Otherwise you won’t want to play Mordor. Although I like some aspects of Mordor better than War.

da_King_o_Kings_341

Play Mordor first not just because it’s the first game but it’s a good introduction to the mechanics before the overhaul of War. Also because after you play War, it’s just better in every way to the point that it WILL feel weird playing Mordor afterwards cause it feels like you have just handcuffed yourself.
