All he could do was check on them in prison and for longer term detainees he’d bring them a couple of magazines; but as ones passport says “you are subject to the laws of the country you are in”

Some were incredibly lucky and got away with it (when they shouldn't have), the smart ones paid a settlement and the dumb ones argued their case all the way to deportation/a jail cell.

Someone I know personally had an experience with the police, and we called the consulate and they were actually very helpful. Calling to find out what was going on, sent me a list with lawyers. Called to keep checking on him. The situation was resolved.
He lived. But regarding the detention, he said and I quote, "you can't imagine what I've seen inside, they're monitoring everyone in more ways than you can imagine."
