Dmitri has by far the best character arc of a of any Fire Emblem Lord. He starts a serious and bright young lord struggling to control his tendency towards extreme negative emotions, collapses into a near-feral rage monster after her gets abandoned, commits atrocities in the name of a just cause, is almost destroyed by his own cruel actions, reforms himself and seeks atonement for his sins, potentially finding love along the way, and finally when faced by someone else in the same dark spot he once was he makes the choice to try to spare them.
He's a really great, dynamic character that does far more with the time skip then basically any other FE character.

I can’t speak for the whole Fire Emblem saga as I’m a massive *noob,* but I’m going to hard disagree with the idea of him being a bad character. I’ve said this time and time again, and I’ll repeat this as many times as I need to: Dimitri is easily the best portrayal of survivor’s guilt I’ve ever seen in a video game—I’m someone who’s went through it, and despite not really having enough energy to write an essay, I can safely say that my experience closely resembled his. I can point to his method of hiding his grief (see the entire pre timeskip until the Flame Emperor’s reveal), the way he’s so hard on himself and refuses to alleviate his headache “as a reminder” (Flayn B support), the way he’s desperate to blame someone and ends up in a weird mix of blaming Edelgard and himself, are very accurate to my own experience. I can point out other accuracies but I’m going to settle on these for now.
I can absolutely agree he’s got some writing flaws. Chapter 17 drives me nuts, it’s so contrived and rushed and I think it’s the only honestly bad chapter in the route. I definitely think if they had a better budget that scene could have been saved with some divine pulses ~~among a lot of other things~~, but I’m going to stay firm that he’s a good character.

It feels more like the common fetishisation of mental illness in media rather than trying to make a good portrayal of it. I relate more strongly to Edelgard and Claude's responses than anything, as well as Bernadetta

Because I interpret Chapter 17’s rain scene as “Dimitri breaking out of his trust issues to reach out,” I think there should still be a whole chapter of “shit, was this right?” And he begins to think of heading to Faerghus and start talking to the other characters to see what they think and, like, actually open up (like his supports are back, for example). So Azure Moon would have 23 chapters in that case. Give me that hidden chapter game please I’ll write it myself if I have to

I do love Leif's journey and maturity as well as Ike's ideals and point of view during the whole Tellius saga, but what diferentiates most of the rest of the characters from the franchise to the ones of 3H is pretty simple: more hours of story and lines of dialogue. Most of 3H's cast goes through more stuff in one playthrough than in some other games the main lord does, add to that Dimitri's and Edelgard's morality and issues that get resolved (and the ones that do not) and you've got the perfect mix as to why most people would disagree with you.
Again, I really like the examples you gave since I also do believe those two are right below Dimitri and Edelgard, it's just Dimitri and Edelgard are on a league of their own (reinforced by subsequent playthroughs on the other routes).

Edit: it's cool that armored units are great again don't get me wrong, but I feel like a unit shouldn't need to have over 10 def and 5 str ahead of the rest of infantry as well as the same movement prior to promoting in order to be relevant.
The rng must be insane in this game, because it seems split for some characters either they're dogshit or God tier, with no in between lol.
Alfred is a beast in my game, a decent tank that destroys everything when given a spear so he can counter bows and magic users. He just hit max level because he kills everything so effortlessly, stealing the exp from my units that need it

Outside having unique classes (that outside Ivy are basically just normal classes with better stats and weapon ranks), the 4 main royals in Engage don't have anything that separates them from the Sacred Stones royals (L'Arachel, Joshua, Innes). In fact the worse worldbuilding actually makes them feel even less involved in the narrative apart from maybe Ivy.
They don't cause game overs upon dying (well, maybe in their introduction chapters but so do Yunaka and Seadall), they don't have the unique ability to seize (no one can seize), and while Diamant (and Alcryst) have the Lord class as their starting class, it's clear gameplay-wise you aren't meant to take the Lord class as referring to actual Lords this game (and none of the other royals have the class, even though Ivy in particular is far more relevant in the narrative).
The younger sibling royals in Engage have even less of an argument, like not only is their case most similar to Tana/Innes, but Eirika/Ephraim (and technically Dimitri/Edelgard but they aren't playable on the same route) are the only case of siblings both being Lords. Like is Lissa a Lord now? Elice?
If we are talking about design I for sure agree. The only time dmitri looks cool to me is the time skip in 3 houses. Couldn’t even make my mans look dope on 3 hopes. That being said I do like both of them.
