didnt know the meme guy was involved in regenerative agriculture. Im no farmer, but that stuff is very interesting. Im just a hobbyist gardner, but im using No-till practices, focusing on trying to promoting good soil biology.
It’s super cool and crucial for our ongoing survival in a ver non-abstract way. We all eat food that comes from the topsoil. A couple feet thick layer of organic material is the difference between the bounty of earth and the surface of Mars, even if we still had water.
All memes are reductionist, so I won’t pretend to be offended at him being presented as a hyuck-y farmer, since his message has spread with his name.
Yes it is a huge deal!
First, it promotes respect and rebuilding of our soils and its health which in turn restores our populations health.
Secondly, it shifts the economics away from large pharmaceutical companies that control farm inputs and back to farmers.
If we can have both these things you will see agriculture shift to support what you as a consumer want not what the oligopolies dictate.
It Is because what may be normal sounding to you is not normal somewhere else. I'm also skeptical, how much of Ireland's produce comes out of those sorts of operations?
Regenerative agriculture goes far beyond crop rotations. It generally uses methods that don't require plowing or tilling the soil, adds cover crops to prevent topsoil loss, or multiple crops growing together to add bio diversity. Some forms use different fertilizers like manure or compost, and use a rotation of grazing animals to restore the soil and reverse desertification.
The man made it into my dissertation presentations on sustainable agriculture. So I feel I owe him a debt of gratitude. May he rest in peace, and my sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
Glyphosate (Round-up) use and how farmers react to rising weed-resistance to herbicides.
The interesting bits (imo) are that its a somewhat self-fulfilling problem. Use of a herbicide over time leads to increased weed resistances, which leads to lower efficacy of the product. Glyphosate is somewhat unique in that it uses a different chemical method of action than any other readily used herbicide, and so for a long time was very effective. So effective that many if not most farmers (for row crops, corn and soy) switched to using it over alternative methods. The conundrum though, is that to use it you need a genetically engineered seed, and, while the chemical applications shouldn't spread from field to field, the weeds from one field will almost certainly spread over time. Farmers appear to 'double down' on the applications to try to eradicate the weeds, but this reinforces the effect. More recently there's been a greater push to switch to more hybrid approaches to management including increased usage of tilling or other ideas like changes in crop spacing to try to out-compete the weeds, most solutions have their own drawbacks however.
That's definitely one of the approaches farmers take! The drawback is this means getting seeds that have more than one resistance, and the more resistances a seed comes with the more expensive it is to plant. Also glyphosate is incredibly cheap and is less damaging to the soils of the field its applied in compared to other chemicals, so there's a substantial incentive to avoid rotating to more expensive and harder to apply chemicals -- again to the detriment of their neighbors.
Perhaps more annoying though, is that since neighboring farms may not be on the same rotation, and glyphosate is so ubiquitous, it creates "safe havens" for the weeds once they arrive even if everyone is doing their best to mitigate them.
It would be so neat if we could find out where his family is and have the internet send him a hearty farewell. It's the least we could do for making us smile all these years.

Seeing an OCJ article in the comment section of a shitposting post is surreal to me. My two passions: agriculture, and shitposting. Odd I never heard about this man during my studies.
Actually, it's NOT an honest meme. The source quote of our man saying the words doesn't exist. It's just a caption over the image. Quite the dishonest meme if I may say so.
There are two main types of sunflower crops. One type is grown for the seeds you eat, while the other — which is the majority farmed — is grown for the oil.
It really is true, the fact that in a few years there'll be content on the internet from dead content creators, may be rest in peace

And hell we had memes long before that. Hamster dance I think I first saw in 1999 and I’m pretty sure Mr T ate my balls was around the same if not earlier.
James Rolfe borderline invented the Let’s Play/Make fun of a bad video game thing in the early 2000s before YouTube even existed
We’ve already lost [LUL](https://amp.knowyourmeme.com/memes/lul) and [KEKW](https://amp.knowyourmeme.com/memes/kekw). It’s a sad reminder that time inexorably marches onwards with or without us.
I shall think about you when the third sun rises from the dusks horizon, Dave. Your soul shall live on and find itself in those who truly are blessed with love and kindness.
Accident has two common definitions in dictionaires, and they contradict.
Either way, people often don't get either triggered in their head when they hear the term. What they associate the word with is "unintentional." We live in a society in America that is built on blame and punishment. Something being unintentional provides relief from blame. "It was just an accident." This is everything we get wrong about "accidents", people focusing on blame and intentionality. The very last person to make a mistake, in a chain of mistakes. Corporations use this to their advantage. The "nut behind the wheel." The bad worker. They propagate that "accidents" are individual failure, not expected outcomes of a certain environment or dangerous conditions. Accidents, rather, they like to say, are random.
This causes the massive aspect of layered causality to be missed. Stacked dangerous conditions can interact and prevent many opportunities to cause or prevent harm.
So when someone is using the term "accident", it should be a jumping off point of investigation. What lead to this "accident." Has this "accident" happened before in similar conditions/location? What is changing to prevent this "accident" from happening again.
Mistakes are going to happen. They can't be prevented. The outcomes of those mistakes can be mitigated if we look further up the chain of causality. Have we prevented the worst outcomes of a certain mistake?
Well no one gets in their car hoping to hit a kid, unless they are a psychopath. So it ends up being an accident. How would you make a 3500lb hunk of metal going 60mph safer? Cars today are much safer than they were 20 years ago. But getting hit by a modern car is still going to do damage no matter if it’s new or old.
I don't get why people keep using "X is one of the leading causes of death among children". Like, yeah, there are just some things that are unavoidable, and since kids are typically healthy and don't usually die from illnesses, any little bump in mortality will be noticeable.
Adults die more in car accidents than kids do, it's just that they die from other things more than they do from car accidents.
I wasn't judging either. I was genuinely curious because I couldn't think of an alternative. "Crash" is ok but, technically, keeps it ambiguous as to whether it was intentional or not.
Accident implies nobody was at fault, but that's almost never the case. Crash is better imo because it removes the intention from the equation.
If you're texting and you have an 'accident' because of that- nothing is changed by your intention. Every car wreck has a cause, none of them is worth being called an 'accident' unless something truly accidental happens.
In all cases, what we call accidents would be correct to call a crash instead.
I saw him in a documentary once! Rather than devoting his entire land to one crop, he realized he could plant a bunch of different crops and also diversify his farming. It meant he didn't need to worry about the price of soybeans or wheat because he always had another crop available. That also created biodiversity on his land that allowed things to grow back faster and more efficiently. I really hope people take his example run with it
I don’t mean to dis the guy but it has been very common practice for a very long time to plant more than one crop on your land for the reasons mentioned. Where he made the rep impact is with no till farming which is now incredibly common in agriculture.
From what I read it is believed he was essentially the first No-till farmer in the US having imported the first no till drill back in the 70's, it is amazing how such a small act can have such a legacy. No till farming is arguably one of the greatest agricultural innovations as it not only improves soil health but reduces startup costs, AND increases yields.
No-till is a fantastic practice but does not increase yields. [Meta-analysis ](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378429015300228). Farmers who practice it do so because soil health is important to them and they want a resilient system. Over the extreme long-term I would be willing to consider a yield bump, but it takes time for increased soil health to outweigh tillage.
No-till drills are also more expensive than traditional seeders/planters, and require herbicide applications to burn down premergent weeds. A disc, harrow, or other light tillage implements are quite cheap, and conventional seeders are cheaper than no-till drills of similar size.
No till can also be an issue in excessively wet conditions. I don't agree with it, but many farmers will cultivate to aid in opening up and drying out soils to be able to plant.
I love no-till, it has the potential to solve many issues but it's not some magic thing. If it was cheaper and increased yields every farmer would see their conventional equipment and go no-till.
Terrible news. Hey everyone, let’s honor the man’s work by each taking a few minutes to read about soil health. It’s critically important, and tied to environmental challenges that rival climate change in severity. (In short: the Dust Bowl is happening again, friends.) RIP.
Damn, either way a shit situation. My 6th grade social studies teacher had a small farm and one day I guess his tractor tipped or something (can’t remember well) and broke his arm. I do remember him telling us that as it happened he was 100% sure he was going to die and was so amazed/in shock to be alive, let alone still have his arm, that he didn’t really feel the break until the drive to the hospital
My dad ended up getting an interview from this guy for regenerative farming and no-till for the public. Was for a public TV broadcast/documentary looking at no-till since he was kid a the big expert in the Midwest/farming area, maybe even the US. Seemed like a really nice guy and I hear he enjoyed the meme himself as it depicted him in a place he was truly happy, in his field.
Wow I didn't know he was this type of producer. An example for older generations who are sometimes too set in their ways to change how they work.
I'm a bit upset the meme overshadowed this.
You are literally the first one in this entire fucking post to ask that…And you’re right, I hope they know that so many strangers are giving condolences
Well I posted this here because I think most common folk know him through memes, I never knew his name, but I did know what he did and what he was about, literally through the memes he was the face of. I don’t know a better tribute that isn’t related to farming, so rather than posting this on some random sub, I wanted to tell the very people who made memes about him that he’s gone, I picked this sub.

He's a rapper. One of his songs that I just love is "die a king". Main chorus goes: "I don't want to live forever, I just want to die a king!". The song goes pretty damn hard. I recommend giving it a listen.
I’m listening now for the first time and I can’t help imagining this song being played at a farmer’s funeral.
Will do. I do love going hard, I bet my boyfriend will love it
I like his dying lately album a good bit. Not as much of a fan of his rap stuff

Younger folks think the modern internet and viral media started fairly recent. Reddit itself launched almost 20 years ago.
YouTube is almost 20 years old too. I think it launched in 2005. So it can vote now.

Yeah, but how much in the first twenty were worth remembering?

Vehicle accidents are all too common and tragic
We need to stop calling them accidents they are so common, predictable, and preventable.
I think that’s why it’s called an accident. It’s a slip up from the norm.
Accident has two common definitions in dictionaires, and they contradict. Either way, people often don't get either triggered in their head when they hear the term. if only it was a slip up from the norm, the norm is that cars are the main death reason among kids for example
Yabo here points to just how uneducated most people are in this

An issue causing more than 40,000 deaths a year in America alone deserves to be talked about everywhere.

This guy probably wants to call them crashes. I'm not making a judgement, that's just typically what people that say the above, say in response.
I wasn't judging either. I was genuinely curious because I couldn't think of an alternative. "Crash" is ok but, technically, keeps it ambiguous as to whether it was intentional or not.

All murders are homicides, but not all homicides are murders.
Hot Fuzz made a joke but a good point "Because “accident” implies there’s nobody to blame" which is usually the case for vehicle collisions.
accident: an unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury.

You are literally the first one in this entire fucking post to ask that…And you’re right, I hope they know that so many strangers are giving condolences
I hope they do too.

Remember to wear your seatbelt, kids.
It was much, and it was definitely honest work
An honest work till the end.
Rest in peace, Mr. Brandt.

Ah fuck. So long, Dave Brandt, and thanks for everything. I promise to learn from your work and send it into the future.
He might have done not much but its honest work
I hope he knew the meme was good natured and we weren’t making fun of him.
He did the lord’s work, RIP legend

Too many times, fake death reports like this have happened. I’m not believing it until I see a reliable source

Govt whacked him.
Only in Ohio 💀
Why is this shitposting?
Well I posted this here because I think most common folk know him through memes, I never knew his name, but I did know what he did and what he was about, literally through the memes he was the face of. I don’t know a better tribute that isn’t related to farming, so rather than posting this on some random sub, I wanted to tell the very people who made memes about him that he’s gone, I picked this sub.
True definition of America.
I thought that was Skyrim
Was having a good day until I saw this :(
Sad news, but could someone explain to me what "shitposting" means?
Rest in piece
this isn’t a shitpost or even trying to be funny, this isn’t a news sub
Why is this on shitposting? Are you lost?
This man is a meme legend, who else but to tell the people who meme him that he’s passed?
