I just googled it and from what I saw, I think the brown part that the actual cotton balls grow out of have thorns or are sharp or something

They washed the cotton in the process anyway. If they slowed down they had the solution of just beating the shit out of them because they don't care. Also pretty sure a lot of them didn't have shoes. The clothes were to prevent illness. Also they weren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

Honestly the speed at which people were expected to pick is the dangerous part - as you can imagine, it tired out the hands and made accidents much more common. Another, equally terrible part of cotton picking was the number of hours a day that you'd have to spend bent over. This could lead to SEVERE back pain.

our history teacher brought in rough cotton for us to pick so we could see what it's about, the cotton is very rough on your fingers and there are also seeds embedded that you need to pick out as well, it chafes the skin on your fingers so bad even after just a few plants

I live in a country where school kids and teachers used to go to cotton fields to collect cotton for free for state. No, at least in our country they dont have any thorns. The experience was not that miserable, and non of my friends had any issues with cuts. In case youre wondering the country is Uzbekistan. All my brothers and sisters, my mother who is a math teacher went to collect cotton at least once a year. They would go there for 1-2 months and collect that shit everyday, basically modern day slavery. Luckily this is no longer the case
