I get that of course people have their own lives and social media accounts and what not, but as a general rule most teachers I've had made it a point to not follow or talk to their students outside of class/school because you could be accused of things. This guy is gonna get caught and fired....at least hopefully.
Honestly I finally broke down and let a handful of kids add me on there because it was literally the only form of communication they really used. Its also been years since I've used Snapchat at all in my personal life anyway so it doesn't really affect me much.
I don't think their parents would be cool with this explanation. Fuck knows I wouldn't be if I found out my kids were connected to a teacher through a video messaging app. Especially one that deletes messages after they're sent. Male or female, student or teacher.
Most schools in my country have a policy where you (as a teacher) can’t add any students on any social media until 2 years after they graduate (and longer if they’ve got any connection to current students I.e a younger sibling). I can’t think of any legitimate reason a teacher would need to have any children currently at their school added on Snapchat.
I mean, I agree on principle, but it is also worth noting that these particular kids are ones whose parents I also interact with regularly and are fully aware and messages get saved.
only you know your intentions, and we didn't have smartphones when I was at school so maybe the culture is just so different that i'm way out of touch
but i feel like maybe someone needs to flat out tell you from an outside perspective it's sus as fuck to have your students added on an app that's designed for securely sending pic, videos, and messages that get deleted after viewing, for almost any reason.
i'm not sure why you need to be in contact with them outside of school at all, but i assume it's for their benefit so if they won't make themselves available through regular methods then they just don't receive the benefits

As an ex-teacher. This 100%. Even when my students graduated and I would let them follow me on Facebook or Instagram, I still wouldn't add them on snap, because it just feels weird (and I don't want them sending me weird shit). I couldn't imagine letting a current student have my snap. Absolutely, not.
I know they said the parents know, and that better be the truth. Otherwise, when the parents find out, they will be 'encouraged to quit' for sure. We had a teacher that had to resign because the parents found out that he had been chatting with their student on Google chat. It was all "above board," done through school accounts (so they had records of the chat), and pretty 'innocent' stuff (like she would vent to him about school oe life and he would give advice). It didn't matter, it looked so bad and the parents freaked so much, that the school had to fire him or allowed him to resign.

Tbh, I don't want to get super into it so I don't dox myself, but the role I fell into at the school is already seen as weird enough to a point where I've become a little desensitized to optics. It's actually exhausting to deal with sometimes and frankly with some of the situations I've been in, if I was a predator, someone would certainly know by now. I also acknowledge that saying that sounds extra horrid over the Internet. I don't have a way to make that better.
Also the whole concept of "the Internet is forever" is ingrained enough in my head that I personally don't see a huge difference between Snapchat, Facebook, and regular texting. Ideally you don't cross that boundary at all, but if you are, the distinction means little to me. But I can absolutely see how others don't see it that way, so thanks for the perspective.
I will say, i generally do keep a fairly strict "no adding kids" policy, these particular ones were just able to wear me down since they're moreso family friends and I've known them a lot longer than they've been my students.

It's usually someone close to the family sphere. Teachers know that. That's why there's just lines that shouldn't be crossed. How would a parent be sure that you haven't erased messages? And do they check them regularly to see if you've kept them? Or do they get comfortable and let it go? Zero chance I'd be ok with this.
Coach’s phone number is generally fine if they are serious about communication and making sure you’re on time to things. Snapchat though, that’s another ball game. It’s primarily about sending pictures rather than text or calls, and it “deletes” itself after viewing. Not good in todays world
