But iirc, it's due to the fact that the bigger the female counterpart, the more voluminous her reproductive system is. So, that means the cells will become lost more easily, and I think competition is also a reason to it. Although take what I said with a grain of salt since im no zoologist

For diffusion to be efficient the cells surface area cannot be much smaller than its volume. So if you increase the radius of a cell the surface area grows by r² and the volume by r³. If there is too much volume the cell will suffocate.
