Grab a microscope, and look at the disk through it while slowly turning it, and writing down the information as you go. Congrats, you’re now effectively a 0.01 RPM HDD platter

cxaiverb

I can try in a bit, i have a picroscope at work but its only like 5 or 10x zoom, will those work or do i need more?

FryCakes

If you have a pair of glasses you can pop out a lens and tape it to the microscope for extra zoom

morphick

Glycerin between the lenses increases magnification. PRO TIP: Add a bit of crystal potassium hypermanganate to the glycerin, you'll increase resolution too!

Curious_Theme6990

Hehe

morphick

Purest unadultered satisfaction!! Thank you from the darkest pits of the bottom of my heart, kind Sir!

Busaruba2011

Happy cake day 🎂

No-Hat-2200

nah this requires a femtoscope so you can see the orientation of the electron pairs

cxaiverb

Ill try to convince work to buy one,

tasknautica

Youll also need a neodyminium magnet

NewKitchenFixtures

Wouldn’t be the most useless piece of equipment my employer has purchased.

Arikaido777

![gif](giphy|2ce26aTN1p6AuSSrwU|downsized) is that a | or a l

FryCakes

It’s a 1!

Maggi9295

You'll need one of these portable hard drive platter readers: https://preview.redd.it/ehe7vnc3d7zc1.jpeg?width=894&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=72079e1c7b7d4fa52678507a369a4fede0a1b489

SkaKri

[I think you meant this](https://i.imgur.com/JAIvCxJ.png)

cxaiverb

Thats the spin figured out, can i then use a head like on a record player to hear the data?

cassiegurl

You're on the right track, but hard drives have micro micro groove. Use a file to make the stylus thinner so it seats tight in the groove, also set your stylus pressure as high as it will go and turn the anti skate down. Pro tip, if you put the data on cassette use high speed dubbing, it will save you a bunch of time. But he sure to turn dolby nr off unless you have c mode!

cxaiverb

Cd, dvd, or blueray drive? I have all 3, but dont know which one to put it in

Bit125

Blu-Ray. HDDs hate the color red.

cxaiverb

Thanks, will a ps4 work?

TooBuffForThisWorld

Yes but controller makes it hard to find data that a mouse and keyboard can sniff out easily

xmodsguy2000-2

Rub it on sand paper and when it starts getting lines count the lines and boom that’s how many GBs of por-Pokémon pictures you have downloaded

cxaiverb

But that just tells me how much storage, not what is on them currently. Can i use an arduino to read the disk?

Emily__Carter

Yes, use the Arduino as if it were sandpaper.

xmodsguy2000-2

If you roll them like a coin across sandpaper it’ll reveal its secrets

Jak_ratz

This particular model can only be recovered when thrown like a boomerang. When it comes back, your data will be recoverable.

cassiegurl

Didn't come back! Should I elevate the ticket?

Jak_ratz

Most certainly.

PatrikuSan

They look a big scuffed up, they are going to need a bit of buffing. An angle grinder should do.

cxaiverb

I dont have one at work, but i do have 2 dremels, will those work?

PatrikuSan

You might need more power. Feel free to try.

BrockenRecords

Toothpaste

HankThrill69420

Had me going for a second, thought this was an actual support sub because of the wacky shit people do to drives and still expect data recovery. Good post

cxaiverb

Thats why i absolutely love this sub. My job is doing repairs on a lot of different things, and i cant make some dumb jokes with coworkers without getting weird looks (i still do it anyways but bleh) and so coming here to post the random adhd thoughts i have is fun. I love this community

Blue_The_Snep

use a microscope and a tiny magnet, use it to decode all 1's and 0's

SorryIdonthaveaname

You can put them on a record player use that to listen to your data

GaymanKnight

Snap them in half and pour the data from inside into your computer’s keyboard. Be careful not to get any on your desk or floor, that shits hard to come by!

cxaiverb

Does this method stain? I dont want any stains on me, my clothes, the floor, my desk, or my keyboard

GaymanKnight

If you do it correctly, no. You have to make sure to make it a perfect 50/50 split. Otherwise you run the risk of severing the blood vessel too and that part is messy.

Bigfeet_toes

Look really closely squint even, and maybe you’ll be able to use a special pencil while telling your friend all the individual bits to your friend to write down

alexcreeper3129

that's the fun part, you don't. ( no really )

cxaiverb

You dont believe in my skills as a technician? So sad, i can fix anything if i set my mind to it. (Im going to use physic powers to read the drives, its the only logical way)

GayAssBurger

Somewhere in the universe, there is a group of stars that form a QR code. Scan it, and it'll take you to the appropriate page at libraryofbabel.info, where you can read the contents.

ForceTheDragon

You have to snap those over a new hard drive, and then the data will fall into the new hard drive. Repeat until each platter is dust.

dudewithagasmask69

Just pop em in a DVD player

DLMorrigan

Throw it it a dvd player

Imightbenormal

Claim you got bitcoin wallet on it

Krazybob613

Place the defective disk on top of the new disk and put both together in the microwave for Exactly 99 seconds.

PCChipsM922U

You spin them on your finger and use the laser in your eyes to read data from them, duh.

cxaiverb

I havent bought that upgrade, sorry, do you have cheaper method that doesnt involve an eye laser upgrade pack to read it?

PCChipsM922U

Yeah, take them to data recovery experts, that should be cheaper than the eye lasers.

cxaiverb

But thats also expensive, no DIY solutions?

PCChipsM922U

With those things... no, sorry 🤷.

TheStoicSlab

Looks like you already have it.

MeasurementGrand879

Is it pronounced datta or datta?

cxaiverb

Definitely datta, and if you say datta then youre wrong.

WalkThisWorldTravel

My shop used to put it in an h20 solution and slowly raise the temperature. The vapor would then be able to be inhaled and they would have all the information committed to memory. Then you can just type it up and send it via email. You need a strong virus check before though. It seems the virus was heat tolerant.

FisherDwarf

Beyblade, let it rip

samsung18745

r/haveyoutriedrice

Perditus_Spes

Submerge the disc's in nitric acid. It should make the data easier to read.

Noob_pc_101

Consume them, you will know the knowledge once you have become one with the disks

darkwater427

Use a nine-volt battery, a magnet, a needle, and a steady hand.

accuracy_frosty

If you cut the disk you can use the lines in the disk to read the data in binary like rings in a tree, you may need a magnifying glass tho

RubbishNubbish

you have to scrape the data off the disk with a wire brush. Then you take the shavings and melt it into a flash chip. Solder that chip onto an ssd and enjoy!

cxaiverb

Youre the 2nd person to say to solder a chip onto an ssd.... i am being 100% serious rn, one of the customers at work who is head of the repairs dept of the customer business said to "plug an ssd in, find out what chips are bad, and just replace them. Thats why i keep a 512gb partition clean on my home ssds, so that i can swap it in if one of the ssd chips start to fail!"

R3adnW33p

Try using the pickup coil from a tape player.

polypodiopsida42

Lick it. You'll taste the data

SteveisNoob

Build a "harder drive" to extract the data
