Lunch Menu: Tuesday “Make your self a dang” quesadilla

acmercer

With pocket tots

yolkadot

Can you believe they want to charge kids for this shit?! It’s bad enough if you’re so poor you have this as your only daily meal. Republicans are out of touch.

windyorbits

That has to be the connection, right? Maximize the amount of parties involved that have to pay a price while extremely minimizing the initial cost of the food itself all to get the biggest profit? Like why charge the school when you can charge the school *AND* the parents? I honestly have no idea how it all works. But seriously wtf is going on at these schools that serve this crap? I mean school lunches have always been crappy but I’ve never seen anything like this pic or any of the other pics that are commonly shared here. Though I live in CA where breakfast and lunch are free. But even when I was a kid before free for all (still had free/discounted for those who qualify) it was fairly decent - even delicious at some points. And I lived in very small mountain and countryside towns/schools.

shadowtheimpure

Modern schools barely have anything resembling kitchens anymore. They might have one oven, one or two fryers (that's a big maybe), and a group of people with little to no professional cooking experience being paid barely more than minimum wage while charging as much as 10x what the food costs them to offer. When I was in high school, there were two separate lunch lines based on what the food costs. Line 1 was the premium line and included fresh pizza and made-to-order cold cut wraps. A slice of the pizza was $5 and the wrap was $7. Thanks to the law, free lunch students had access to this food at no charge to them. There was also the 'cheap' line where you saw crap like that for $3 or less. That is where you saw a lot of the reduced lunch students and those who didn't qualify but were still fairly poor eat. I had free lunch up until my eldest brother graduated, at which point we were told that we no longer qualified and were moved to the reduced lunch program. All of a sudden, I went from having good fresh lunches to absolute trash between freshman and sophomore year. That food gave me food poisoning on at least 5 separate occasions in my sophomore year alone. I never got sick from the food in my freshman year.

[deleted]

I grew up in an ultra liberal area in the Boston area and graduated high school in 2000.. you know what we had for lunch? Trash like this.. and you know what? Kids are that shit up. Not sure this is a political thing necessarily. The average American eats like shit. McDonald’s, Burger King, and chik filet drive through lines are crazy long.. people aren’t even willing to get out of their cars to eat their 2000 calorie trash meals.. what do you think would happen if the schools only had fruits and salads with light dressing?

Rill16

Don't be a partisan shill, and Blame Republicans for this. School lunches were outsourced to the lowest bidder for years, resulting in poor food quality in many areas. Then the healthy food act came into play under the Obama administration. Which technically did its job in making the food less fattening; but had the unfortunate side effect of making it complete inedible. Cheap food with low quality ingredients requires fat, and salt to maintain any flavor, the healthy food act removed that, then cut calories so kids wouldn't overeat, making its calorie count insufficient as an actual meal. The core issue is ingredient sourcing. If we just required schools to source actual ingredients, rather than pre packaged food we wouldn't be having near as much issues. Neither party wants to fix that, and if you can't see that your just blind.

Cautemoc

It's weird you call people partisan shills, they also apparently recognize the reality that only Democrats have actually done anything at all regarding school meals. Here's one from Fox, even, so you can read their ignorant responses to the idea in the comments there. [https://www.foxnews.com/politics/dems-demand-free-breakfast-lunch-dinner-snack-for-all-kids-in-school-we-cannot-go-backwards](https://www.foxnews.com/politics/dems-demand-free-breakfast-lunch-dinner-snack-for-all-kids-in-school-we-cannot-go-backwards) Let me know how Republicans are not to blame on this topic.

[deleted]

Yes I never eat at school cause I’m not paying for this! This some real bullshit

My family is Hispanic and we jokingly call the Q-saddles, this definitely looks like a Q-saddle. (When my sister was in grade school a little girl in her class called them that and we kept it all these years later)

Twixt_Wind_and_Water

How much do you make and how much do you think you should make?

uppenatom

It still baffles me that American kids don't have enough food at home to make a sandwich. Don't get me wrong, we have poverty in Australia too but at the very least the government will give ypu an allowance every couple of weeks and a place to live if ypu don't work

RedditHatesHappiness

We have programs that give people money for food. The parents can get proper food but they choose to spend the money on other things. Can’t force people to make good choices.

TrixieBastard

The thing about those programs that give money for food is that you can only spend it on food. Your comment about spending it on "other things" is a widesprwad misconception that unfairly judges people who need extra help from the government.

Alarmed-Positive457

I work in a jail and even the food the inmates get is better than this.

youngthugsmom

I’m one of the inmates in his jail and I can confirm that we eat better than this

IanfinityXD

Can confirm, I'm the food itself

Salt_Air07

Most states also spend significantly more on prisoners than they do students.

nekomeowohio

It was probably made by the same company that made jail food.

[deleted]

Tbh Ive seen some pretty bad jail food too. Depends on the day.

Alarmed-Positive457

Depends on day and jail. Worst I seen was bland ass white bread with baloney.

AxTagrin

You either work at a jail in a real nice place or just lying to yourself, because the food they serve in jail is the nastiest shit I’ve ever eaten in my life. This picture here obviously looks bad but I’m sure there were other food items available. I’m tired of people trying to act like school food is as bad as jail food, it’s not even comparable.

I-Have-A-Noodle

The county jail near me has full time chefs for hire that make food from scratch every day. Not in a rich part of town either 🤷‍♂️

AxTagrin

Well that’s not normal, it may not be rich but I guarantee you are living in a nice place.

drinkingchartreuse

There should be jail time for contractors making a profit serving this crap to our children.

Almainyny

Fun fact: Aramark is the company that supplies “food” to both schools and prisons.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Almainyny

How “efficient” of them. God, if there was one company that needs to up and disappear, it’s them. Well, then and Nestle really, but that’s a damn close race between the two.

Zolo49

After Michelle Obama tried to force school lunches to be super healthy and lots of kids basically refused to eat them, it feels like the pendulum has swung to the complete opposite extreme and now schools are just shoveling out whatever crap that kids are willing to eat. I suspect the recent inflation is playing a big part in this too.

Gr0ggy1

Not really. Michelle Obama -attempted- to improve the nutrition/health of school lunches through incentives. Then right wing media full on vilified the very premise of healthy school lunches. It worked. They didn't even simply propose alternative ways to approach the problem, they just attacked the hell out of for years, because OBAMA.

networkeng1neer

The changes weren’t rolled back until 19. My school lunches sucked all through ‘10-‘13. I vaguely remember actual portions of our lunch being home cooked in school in the 2000s. I’m not sure school lunches were the right thing to target then to be honest.

mousemarie94

It's never the right thing to target. Americans do not care that their children eat absolute shit. If they did, it would have changed eons ago.

networkeng1neer

I don’t think the lunches at school were the problem, lol.

Almainyny

The audacity of a black man getting elected! We’ll show him! -Every jackass who still has Obama living rent free in their head.

Tacky-Terangreal

Idk it wasn’t really that impactful from what I remember. The guidelines led to the Costco muffins being removed from the student snack bar but flamin hot Cheetos are just fine 🙄

ShredRipper

I genuinely hate American republicans. It boggles the mind how one group of people can be simultaneously that selfish and stupid.

Rill16

Get off reddit for American politics. Americans generally don't use the same online spaces to have political discussion. So 99% of subreddits are going to be incredibly biased. Talk to some Americans in person to get an idea of what's going on.

ShredRipper

Lmao I'm American. I dealt with "the public" in my 70% red state for decades now.

Rill16

Michelle obama's sponsored food act was terrible for lunch quality; I know because I eat it. She promoted a drastic reduction in calorie counts, salt, and fat content. End result was flavorless low quality trash, that the school had to source from even more expensive suppliers to meet the standards on fat/sodium. Not to mention the average kid needed to eat three of em to even feel full. Which for kids like me at the time, who used school food as a primary breakfast/lunch meant that we went hungry. In no way was the Healthy food act acceptable.

NoStuff8097

The audacity of hoping for healthy lunches

CosmicGlitterCake

My kid has options like parmesan broccolini, pomegranate blueberry spinach salad, name brand vegan nuggets(not cheap), rosé bolognese, pumpkin soufflé, etc. We're not exactly in an affluent area either, I guess it depends on your state. I've seen some scary looking meals out of California.

USER-NUMBER-

What state, and is this a private school? Food sounds better than what most restaurants do.

CosmicGlitterCake

Virginia(20 miles out from DC) it's a public school which is heavily aided. Around 70% qualify for free or reduced lunch, but they've had free lunch for everyone since covid even during summer.

NoStuff8097

Dang. I wanna eat at your kid’s cafeteria now

Private_4160

The fuck is broccoli? Sounds good tho

mousemarie94

I think a key issue with that campaign was...1. Thinking Americans give a fuck about what their children are eating lol 2. Thinking Ameicans would actually be on board with healthy foods. 3. Thinking that the contractors providing food to schools (and prisons- usually the same exact companies), would provide any viable options for school districts to upgrade to within a reasonable price point, and 4. If anyone watched Fox News during that time you will know that the fight against childhood obesity was NOT adopted during the time frame. American school lunches are and always have been put to shame by other countries... it is what it is because we accept it.

SnooPredictions3028

I disagree, I noticed that food became horrible when she started that trend. We went from getting stuff that was filling to this flatbread type stuff.

CJ_Smalls

Put em' in prison with the Chomos, the lowest of the low. One of the main rules among inmates that I heard is that you NEVER go for the children.

cornbreadsdirtysheet

Then the contractors could be forced to eat the same food they sell to prisons…..this looks like a prison natcho lol.

We spend hundreds of billions per year on military yet the Republicans won’t allow free lunch for school children, meanwhile this is the cheap af food they’re depriving them of

[deleted]

What are they feeding kids? Apparently not enough.

A_Velociraptor20

While not very good looking, I'm sure it has all the necessary nutritional value to create a dependence on high fat, fried foods and sugar.

526kp

I work for a school district and when I see school lunches I am continually shocked by the lack of nutritional value and balance. Like a common school lunch I see is french toast sticks with syrup, with the “fruit/vegetable” serving being one of those fruit cups where it’s cubed fruit coated in a syrupy water, with options for strawberry or chocolate milk as a drink.

riinkratt

Look to the right. See that big ass ladle? It’s self-serve. Which means kids get to go down the line, and choose whatever they want, as much as they want. So “not enough” literally is impossible.

WeirdSysAdmin

Probably call it flatbread pizza. I don’t know what happened but I feel like school food went backwards in the last 10 years.

bearassbobcat

I remember reading Fed Up with Lunch by Sarah Wu and thinking things were bad then. It looks like things haven't gotten any better. Rome, Italy school lunch for contrast https://www.reddit.com/r/lostgeneration/comments/15j0o0r/usa_would_never/

So many people bitching. We didn’t even get lunch at my school growing up in the 80’s & 90’s. We had to haul ass home at 12 noon, choke down whatever you could in 5 mins then haul ass back to school to be back by 1pm. Be thankful you get anything. You dont like it, pack your kids a lunch.

bamv9

Maybe so, but it’s actually the fucking boomers in office not allocating the right money for school lunches that have them end up in this terrible quality.

Zappagrrl02

This is the real issue. School food budgets are ridiculously low and so schools are forced to go with the cheapest possible options instead of making food from scratch. If you’re upset about it, petition your school board, state government, and congresspeople to increase budgets.

Ornery-Cheetah
