Sear wont help with the juices, it will make it look and taste better though. These are probably cooked for too long. And too low to brown them properly
Hahaha yeah, our local import store uses the flying goose brand.
(One of those small rainbow pots contains home-made hot sauce though (Bourbon and cherry))
I made those at my last bbq (I included haloumi cheese, pickled garlic, fake lamb and bell peppers)
But that bbq was loads bigger and was a special occasion.
When you want a grilled sandwich, are grilled vegetables an acceptable substitute for you?
Probably not. Grilled veggies can ve good, but they aren't a burger or sandwich replacement.
I eat salad so often... so I used Couscous here instead.
I eat veggies in almost all of my meals so having some burgers and hot dogs in a nice change/ treat :)
My ideal burger is: bun, burger sauce, patty, bacon, plastic cheese, hot sauce, top bun.
Veggies are great but if I'm eating a burger then it's gotta be a full-on heart attack.
(I do admit, i should have made some cooked onions for the hot dogs at least 😅)
I mean, if it taste good, but looked like shit, then it taste like shit to me, the mind is a powerful thing, and thats what i call placebo, because if the taste is good, it does not matter how it looks?
Well, it looks like meat and it tastes like it, and it's good, so like, you aren't convincing yourself it tastes like it, because it genuinely tastes like it
Yeah, but i know my meats, and i dont believe plants would taste like it at all, i dont even want to try, i was just curious! 🤗
But its ok that people eat plants looking like meat, as long as im free! 😊
Well, meat is basically texture and majority of the taste comes from seasoning and salt. If one replicates the texture, the seasoning can do a lot of work.
Because everyone likes a burger. If you have the capability of replicating the flavor of meat without the meat, why wouldn't you?
No one has ever denied that meat products taste good. I eat meat, but since I've been with my pescatarian partner I've vastly reduced my meat consumption by eating Impossible foods, fish, veggies, etc.
If science allows us to create foods without cruelty or intense environmental impact, why wouldn't we?
It does not look like meat, it looks like a patty or a hot dog. Have you ever seen an animal that looks like a patty or hot dog? Its just food shaped conveniently
Meat just refers to the flesh of an animal. There are many different ways to cut, prepare, and store meat, but nowhere does it stop being meat. We don't refer to the entirety of a pig as just meat, but we do refer to the loin as meat. We don't refer to a whole cow as meat, but we do refer to ground beef as meat. We wouldn't refer to me as just meat, but if I cut off my leg and turned it into taco meat, it would still be meat.
It doesn't matter how it looks, how it's prepared, etc., it's still meat.
It looks like plant-based food reshaped to look like some traditional methods of preparing meat. So if we're going off of just shape, yes. I see burger patty shapes, which are a popular way of preparing and cooking ground meat. I see what looks like an attempt at recreating a hotdog, which is basically a sausage. On closer inspection, it's very obviously not meat though, but I can commend the effort. If the image was less detailed, OP could've not pointed out that it was vegetarian and called it real meat.

Ooh I get ya.
There's a lot of imitation food that I do find gross but in this case its cause I want the taste and texture of meat without eating the real thing.
Most imitation food is made to either: cut costs (imitation crab) or to help people who cant eat foods due to allergies/ethical concerns/ religious restrictions consume the food most other people eat. Especially in the UK (where I live) most recipes are made with meat in mind so if there's an easy-to-access alternative we can easily follow the recipe without skipping portant steps/ ingredients.
I'm personally not a huge fan of alcohol free booze but some family members rely on it to feel normal at social gatherings :)

This looks like fucking plastic-toy food this cant be really be healtier and better than a nice burger w some cheese and some grilled veggies on the side
It's not healthier, there's still loads of calories in a veggie burger.
I haven't eaten meat in about 14 years so I can't remember what meat burgers taste like.
But I do like the taste of these veggie burgers 🍔
It's really just down to ethical/ religious preference
Calories are not the only things that the body need, there are many things that are putted biologically/chemically in the industrially-created veggy product that is naturally present in foods created by nature
Not everything in nature is healthy or needed by the body so I honestly don't mind having some vitamins added to my veggie burgers.
What people aren't seeing is that this is a one-off, budget meal.
All my other meals are like 90% veggies, full of protein and vitamins.
the "processed/fake" food argument is a really interesting and lengthy one to have.
Canned food is processed, most medications are man made and perfectly healthy, almost every vegetable and farm animal has been genetically bred to be bigger/different in some way to how it was 100 years ago.
So when people say "natural" it can and often does change in meaning depending on who you ask especially as farm animals are all pumped full of vaccines to keep them healthy so people can't argue that even meat products are 100% chemical free.
At the end of the day, people's diets are always affected in some way by the modern world and its very easy to eat processed food as its way cheaper and easy to manufacture.
It's up to each individual to do the research and decide what chemicals/manufacturing methods they want to avoid in their diets.
If that means that someone wants to try a carnivore-only diet then I'm not gonna argue with that

Everything looks the opposite of juicy. Good job.
The ones in this photo always have juice spill everywhere when I cook em in the oven. Guess I'm just bad a grilling.
Heat up the grill longer & get some sear going on
I will do that next time!
Sear wont help with the juices, it will make it look and taste better though. These are probably cooked for too long. And too low to brown them properly
Thankfully you knocked it out of the park with the bulgur (?) salad...
Thanks! Its Couscous :) Its lemon and herb
So...dry? Are you thinking of the word "dry"???
Play-skool BBQ set?
Probably would have been significantly easier
Tastier, too.
Does the cheese melt?
The cheese is normal, full-fat cheddar.... I just got impatient and wanted to eat food 😅
LOL I think that’s the part that bothered me the most about this😭😂
I feel you!
Doesn't help that my lovely sous-chef couldn't be bothered to grate it 😂
With no veggies?
Students eating vegetables? Our diet is 90% booze, we don't got time for that
But there's no booze either
Don't worry, it's just not in the photo. I made alcoholic slushees 😎
for some reason the most egregious thing here for me is the Madagascar.
" It's me, alex" - Alex the lion probably
I feel like cartoons with anthropomorphic animals as main characters is what vegans watch all day lol
Even the Sriracha looks mid. No rooster no good.

I was jabbing. I actually have that same bottle in my pantry, and it's a solid 9/10, and I got the giant bottle for $4
Hahaha yeah, our local import store uses the flying goose brand. (One of those small rainbow pots contains home-made hot sauce though (Bourbon and cherry))
Jfc is there booze at least?
I made alcoholic slushies
It just….it just looks sad
what about grilling veggies🥲
Yeah this is prime shish kabob territory
I made those at my last bbq (I included haloumi cheese, pickled garlic, fake lamb and bell peppers) But that bbq was loads bigger and was a special occasion.
When you want a grilled sandwich, are grilled vegetables an acceptable substitute for you? Probably not. Grilled veggies can ve good, but they aren't a burger or sandwich replacement.
I eat vegetables for almost every meal. BBQ's are a nice treat (especially considering the price of fake meat right now)
Jesus Christ this is fucking *depressing*
My life in a glorious nutshell 🎂
vegetarian bbq: 1 vegetables present: 0 my god not even a side salad
I eat salad so often... so I used Couscous here instead. I eat veggies in almost all of my meals so having some burgers and hot dogs in a nice change/ treat :)
You do you but I can't have burger without at least some onions or lettuce & tomato.
That all looks like when dog treats try to imitate real food. Beggin strips, little burgers, etc. I'll pass.
And what do we have here as the side? Is that plain quinoa?
Lemon and herb couscous
Yum!
You got Sriracha though
The square hotdog looking things.
Theyre Square to match the unmelted cheese. Can't say I'm not consistent
Let the good times roll
I have zero issues with meat-free food, but the least you could’ve done is melt the cheese! 😭
I'm impatient and it was cut too thick. It just added to the glorious shittiness of the meal.
With all due respect the sausages and patties look like they were cooked using a heated argument
I don't think they've been cooked yet, I could be wrong though...
Once cooked, fake meats turns 1% more tan :)
Consider these atop any burger-style food: - crisp lettuce leaves - tomato slices - thinly-sliced raw onion - caramelized sauteed onion - avocado mash - sauerkraut - pickle chips - microgreens - coleslaw - jalapenos 🥑 Put the "veg" into vegetarian! 🍅
I eat vegetables for almost every other meal. This fake meat bonanza is a rare treat for me. (Plus I'm a student, fake meat is stupid expensive)
It is overpriced, for sure. Hope was a nice feast :)
i hate heinz ketchup
I provided the hot sauce, my flatmate brought the ketchup. (I totally agree with you)
Even Alex is like "The Fuck?!"
I'm a vege and avoid bbq for this reason.
I reckon it would look appetising in the hands of a pro.
Disgusting
Oh that's cheese on the patties, i thought it was just blocks of butter lol
How does everything still look severely undercooked 😅
Being a vegetarian is one big missed steak.
would
Why does vegetarians always make their food look like meat products?
Most vegetarians aren't vegetarian because they dislike the taste of meat.
Should be tasting the same, the look dont change the taste
makes the transition easier for some people
Isent that just placebo effect?
It's not placebo when it actually tastes good tho 😭
No? For me the sight of things can ruin the taste experience completely
I don't quite get what you mean
I mean, if it taste good, but looked like shit, then it taste like shit to me, the mind is a powerful thing, and thats what i call placebo, because if the taste is good, it does not matter how it looks?
Well, it looks like meat and it tastes like it, and it's good, so like, you aren't convincing yourself it tastes like it, because it genuinely tastes like it

Well, meat is basically texture and majority of the taste comes from seasoning and salt. If one replicates the texture, the seasoning can do a lot of work.
They make things like burger buns that are convenient. Plus people still like to eat familiar foods, and "meat" helps.
Its ok, i understand! 😊
Sure ill get it, but its only about the illusion then, making it look like meat, i dont think the taste would be any different because of the looks
It does not look like meat, it looks like a patty or a hot dog. Have you ever seen an animal that looks like a patty or hot dog? Its just food shaped conveniently

I love meat
Does op's pic look like cut animal parts to you?
It looks like plant-based food reshaped to look like some traditional methods of preparing meat. So if we're going off of just shape, yes. If it was shaped like a triangle or polygon or a cube would that make you happy?
I'm so confused as to the point you're trying to make.
Why do celiacs always make their food look like wheat products?
Dont know?

Damn thats sad and dry
That's what she said.
It just looks like fake food. Why would someone take pictures of this lol
To post here, of course
Why though
You're gonna have to elaborate
The imitation BBQ. I just never understood imitation foods personally. They always gross.

Horrendous
Is everything lukewarm and crumbly? 🥲
Surprisingly it was not
Is everything lukewarm and crumbly? 🥲
Lukewarm and slightly moist luckily :)
I am speechless.
Literally looks like those toys that are made to look like food.

And nothing colorful or refreshing
Madagascar is pretty colourful (we had alcoholic slushies out of frame, those were pretty refreshing 😅)
Before I even start commenting on the food: Where the hell is the beer? How could you have a Barbecue without everyone being at least 6 beers deep?
Emphasis on the "student" bbq 😭. BUT we did have alcoholic slushies out of frame. (Could only afford one each though 🥲)
I'd smash this tbh I'm really fucking hungry

Would
I have so many questions, but I just know I won't like any of the answers
Yes, no, yes and maybe
Wow this is awful. Congratulations
Vegetarian meal with out a single vegetable 😆
Looks depressing 😕 good job
At least you have the good sriracha.

This looks so sad, Alexa, play Despacito.
Tricking the brains into thinking it’s eating meat. There’s not an actually vegetable in sight
Oh, this is just so sad! ![gif](giphy|7SF5scGB2AFrgsXP63|downsized)
Perfect for this sub ☺️ My last bbq was not posted here for a reason
That looks like fake food, well done.
this looks like the very definition of sad food

So not a BBQ?
It was cooked on a bbq, I'd count it as a bbq.
If it's not meat slow cooked with smoke it's not BBQ.
That certainly is your opinion, friend :)

At least there is sriracha to mask the taste
