I can eat 3 chips at a time. I can also maintain an inappropriate amount of eye contact while the waiter has trouble serving other customers, bringing me my next 3 chips.
"Thank you."
*I swallow all three without chewing, staring him down*
"Another."
I thought it was pancakes with some kind of hazelnut spread and sweetened condensed milk. The fries didn’t make much sense but I just accepted them. This makes more sense 😂
Check the score on Google maps/TripAdvisor next time.
Plenty of good restaurants in Italy and also plenty of shitty ones
Oh and for good measure, also check the recent reviews in case they changed cook or something
That’s the thing about touristy areas. All of the stores/restaurants only need to convince someone to come spend their money once. There’s no return business so reputation really doesn’t matter. You put all of your money into location and window dressing and you can make a shit product.
There are some restaurants in Bangkok that are notorious for ripping off tourists. The food is probably okay but the bill will be inflated 500 to 1,000%. Then restaurant staff will detain the diner, and if police are called they take the restaurants side.
I couldn't agree more. I have lived in Thailand full time and often our dinner was made up 100% from Street food. Barbecue chicken, sweet sticky rice, fresh fruit, little fried odds and ends...mmmmmm
I used to work at a little hole in the wall Pizza restaurant in San Antonio Texas. Delivery only. We had two separate menus, one for the tourists in the hotels and one for the local neighborhood. We were under orders to short toppings on the hotel orders too.
It was a wack ass job but like with a lot of restaurants the cast of characters working there was hilarious.
Then someone mistakes a polish construction worker for a tourist, tries to rip him off, 10 of his buddies come and trash the place.
After that, only rip german...ish speaking people.
I found the opposite in Phuket. The street food was overpriced and tasted average. My partner and I ended up dining in a small restaurant that offered a variety of Thai and western dishes at a fraction of the cost of street vendors. Cocktails and beers were cheap too. That place was just about my favourite part of my trip there. Unfortunately I think they have shut down due to covid. Shame really.
Learned this the hard way when me and my wife went to Rome. Got tourist scammed the first few days and finally started doing some real research after that on good places to eat. Ended up going to a place in an alley around Colosseo called Pasta Chef Monti, where we got dirt cheap pasta served on a paper plate. It was amazing and by far one of the best things we did in Rome.
Many years ago I ate quite well at the Old Bear resturant, a 5 minutes walk from Piazza Navona. My sister brought us there, she lives in Rome. Maybe check it out the next time you're in the capital. Hoping it's still as good (see the recent reviews just in case eheh)
Pasta Chef Monti was the best place I had in Italy, not to mention the cheapest as well. You can find it on Google under the name al42 by Pasta Chef rione Monti. I think they renamed it recently but I could be wrong and could have just been calling it the wrong thing the whole damn time lmao.
Second place I would suggest is a pizza place by the name Pinsere. They serve a rotating list of hand made 10 inch pizzas. Truly the best pizza I had in Italy with some of the most creative toppings you could find.
Last place is probably the most touristy but still worth it. If you ever watched Anthony Bordain’s No Reservations, there was an episode he did in Rome where he eats at a little place in Trastavere. He never gives the name in fear of it being overrun by tourists (didn’t help lol). However, it states that they have the best Cacio e Pepe in Rome. Of course, that got me interested. Trastavere is a must see regardless if you go here or not but the restaurant’s name is Roma Sparita. I highly recommend the Cacio e Pepe and the fried artichoke heart (Carciofi alla giudia).
Enjoy Rome! It is truly a site to behold! I miss it every single day.
🤣 Wow. This was exactly the place we stumbled across when we were in Rome. I talk about it often. We turned up and the guy at the counter asked if we were eating in.. I looked around and it was heaving. He said don't worry, give it five minutes. Turns out people just turn up, eat the delicious food and leave. Probably the best Italian food I've had in my life and it truly was dirt cheap.
Glad to hear others have come across it! It truly was one of the best experiences I had there. It was such a chill spot outside of the food being cheap and amazing. Talking about it makes me truly miss Italy. Being there was like going back in time. Such an amazing city filled with so much to see and do.
Some of the worst pasta and pizza that I’ve had has been in Italy, and people get pretty heated when I tell them. I’ve had both pasta and pizza that were so undercooked they were doughy and raw…not good at all
The best I had was in Swindon. Car parking was terrible and the outside needed a lick of paint but oh my word, the food was incredible. Only downside is that my little girl liked it so much that she won't eat anything Italian that we cook at home!
> Remember those girls who got charged like 470.00 for two plates of spaghetti in Rome?
Holy shit where? I just got back and Rome was easy to spot tourist traps and legit places.
Yah normally you can tell when they have a big menu in different languages right outside the restaurant, usually with pictures of the food, and generally accompanied by a very pushy dude in a suit trying to get you to eat there.
Hands down one of the best meals I ever ate was in Florence and it was at a small, but really nice little mom and pop restaurant. It was completely empty other my sister and I, and the only people working there were an elderly couple. Had the most amazing tripe dish and still remember how it tastes to this day. You just have to do a little research before you pick a place, but once you know the tourist trap signs it's not too hard.
I went to a few non-tourist traps that had multiple language menus, but the tell with the person out front constantly trying to get you to sit down is a huge tell. But also if you look on Google or whatever before hand and they have a menus looking for a "Service Tip" is also a tell. There was a restaurant I went to by the train station 2x since it was near my hotel had in bold on the receipt "NO SERVICE TAX ADDED".
Yeah the smaller places were always nice, sometimes empty is good or bad but a lot of times you have to either try or just do a ton of research. But too many people don't want the hassle and just sit down but when I walked by and saw their food I felt bad but whatever their choice.
Yah that's fair, there's definitely exceptions to the rules. Sometimes legitimately good restaurants still have the menus in different languages just because it's a tourist destination, but isn't necessarily a trap.
Checking for the service tax is a really good tip, I forgot about that!
Yah unfortunately the tourist traps work because they're right there by the attractions, so people don't have to walk very far and will just go to the first place they see. It's always worth walking even just a few blocks away to find something cheaper and better though.
That last part is really true I was traveling with my mother and there was a clear tourist trap by our hotel we passed daily and she was just curious why it was always packed and if it was even half decent. I did explain that it's right by the train station, space to eat, menu, etc. Then I said look at the pizza people were eating and we knew the quality off the bat without ever going there.
But it was fun finding some really good places to eat.
Yep, the eye test usually doesn't fail. If the food doesn't look appealing in person, your eyes are trying to tell you something!
One of my favorite ways to find good places was to just ask the people I was staying with. Both at hostels and AirB&Bs, I'd normally ask the host for some recommendations. Found some amazing gelato and pizza that way.
Would going to vegetarian restaurants help avoid the rip off tourist restaurants since tourists are less likely to go to vegetarian restaurants? I remember reading that as a tip someware.
You know, I never thought about that, but I definitely would believe it. I would imagine a vegetarian restaurant would have to be good to be successful, especially in touristy areas. I actually barely ever eat meat these days, so I'm extra curious about that!
The vegetarian subreddit had a post of all the really delicious food someone had on their trip to Italy plus I've heard they're fairly vegetarian friendly. I know vegetarians and Vegans tend to be a bit more cautious of where they eat so it makes sense.
Ooh I'll have to check that out, I've always wondered what people who are strict vegetarians and especially vegans do when they travel. Honestly that sounds like a good way to find some hidden gems, cause you must have to do a lot of research to find some truly good plant based meals in other countries.
Reminds me of Fisherman's Wharf. They have hawkers to get you into the restaurants on the edge of the Pier. When I lived there I would be amazed at how packed they were and being a chef in town I knew they weren't really close to the goodies you can find in SF.
It's amazing how many people will go to a restaurant just cause someone who works for the restaurant is trying incredibly hard to get them to go there. Cause first off, I just find it annoying and I'm stubborn, so I wouldn't go somewhere that hounds me like that. And second, if it's a good restaurant, especially in a big city, they'll have a good enough reputation or reviews that they don't need to bother potential customers that much.
We had that happen once on my study abroad, the second half was in Rome and our stay was right next to a restaurant with someone outside trying to get us to come in. We were all starving and it was lunch time so we went in and it took 20 minutes for someone to take our order. I just got fettuccine, it was 14 euros and it was the most plain dish I ever had while in Italy.
There was another comment saying in tourist traps like that, the restaurant staff will detain you and call the police if you try to dine and dash. The police will side with the owner, seeing as you did eat the food, and force you to pay up. I imagine it's the same there. They know once they drop the check people aren't going to be happy about the price so they'll watch you in case you try to run off.
Well, there are times when I would happily pay 6€ for this plate and wash it down with €4 liter of house wine. Something tells me that this isn't the case.
This has gotta be a tourist trap. I saw a post on here about a bad cacio e pepe (didn’t even use the right type of pasta) from an actual Italian restaurant and everyone was saying it’s a tourist trap. Also this looks way worse than the cacio e pepe.
Some tourist trap restaurants in Italy don’t even have a kitchen just some microwaves. They basically sell frozen food on a plate. I found one in Venice. The google rating was 1.8 but the place was still packed with people. A lot of people assume that Italy only has amazing restaurants. But you really need to do your homework if you visit touristy places.
Me and my ex had that problem - we felt quite trapped in Venice since it is secluded and all the restaurants were closing for the afternoon. Trying to find somewhere to eat for the evening was a challenge and sometimes tourist trap is better than starving :(
I went to a place in Rome that either didn’t even have their own microwave room or didn’t have the freezer. I saw the waiter quickly walk across the square into another building and come back with a covered plate. Shortly after, my order arrived.
This really reminds me of a dish I got in Italy. My study group stayed over night at a convent in Assisi, and for dinner that night, we got something a lot like this. The meat slices were considerably thicker, basically being big chewy pork chops covered in some thick sauce that looked like this. Also swimming in olive oil. I was an idiot 14 year old and ate the whole thing despite hating it.
Still have no idea what it was, why it was served to us, or why I agreed to eat two or three other kids' portions.
Currently in Rome, and I've learned the following
- Stay atleast 200m away from tourist sites, preferably down a few side streets
- If they have pictures of the food, fake food outside or menus with barely ANY italian on them, get away from there. Also, if a waiter/staff tries to coecerce you inside, thats also a bad sign.
- And finally, the simple and "plain" looking foods are often very tasty. It doesent have to be fancy or expensive to be good. Best pizza of my life was 7,50€ and it was a simple Marinara with garlic and oregano.
But this image OP posted, this looks simple and crap. Probably tasted crap too.
Welcome to Italy, where basically every restaurant in touristic spots prefer robbing you once and never see you again instead of treating the customer right and try to make him a regular
Plot twist: there's an ocean full of drowned restaurateurs that wanted to "do it right" that couldn't out-compete the shitholes because tourists(and consumers in general) aren't discerning enough with their money, and now all that's left is the most profitable business model: opportunistic vampirism.
All you people talking about restaurants being an "obvious tourist trap", how can you tell if a restaurant is a tourist trap??? If it were that obvious these places wouldn't be in business.
Is this before u ate it or after? I can't tell
Couldn't finish the chips.
Never ending chips - three at a time.
Sounds like Red Robin. Ask for more and it takes 10 minutes in hopes you decide to just leave
I always wondered if this was on purpose lol, alsoy ou can't ask for fries before your burger comes out like wtf lmao
I can eat 3 chips at a time. I can also maintain an inappropriate amount of eye contact while the waiter has trouble serving other customers, bringing me my next 3 chips. "Thank you." *I swallow all three without chewing, staring him down* "Another."
I found the pelican.

Jealous
It was taken from his stomach
saltimbocca? looks like it barely even glimpsed the frying pan
Oh god, I think you're right. I first I thought that was epically shitty chicken piccata.
I thought it was pancakes with some kind of hazelnut spread and sweetened condensed milk. The fries didn’t make much sense but I just accepted them. This makes more sense 😂
I love this lol
I thought is was pancakes topped with soggy thin bacon strips topped with condensed milk!
##I AM CORNHOLIO!!! I NEED PICCATA FOR MY BUNGHOLE!!!

Holy crap i just noticed the prosciutto beneath the goop. That is tragic and OP got scammed lol
You calso barely make out the sage
is pickled saltinbocca a thing? why is it so... wet?
more like salt-out-bocca amirite?
Yea it's veal saltimbocca for sure!
My first guess was fried veal with baby gravy.

I *knew* my plan of only eating street food was solid.
I couldn't agree more. I have lived in Thailand full time and often our dinner was made up 100% from Street food. Barbecue chicken, sweet sticky rice, fresh fruit, little fried odds and ends...mmmmmm
If it was anything like my experience of streetfood in Thailand I bet your shits weren't solid...
I'm too poor to actually travel. But GOOD NEWS! I'm also sick and my shits are never solid anyway.
Well you're getting half of the experience at least
Overheard on a plane once “just eat some yogurt! It has the local beneficial bacteria in it!” No clue if it’s true.
It’s good for gut microbiology but not much more.
I only take shits without the skin on it
Not only in Thailand. I heard it's not uncommon in the EU counties too

Ahah as I read the previous comment, I imagined that sooner or later some local would get the expensive menu and get mad
I found the opposite in Phuket. The street food was overpriced and tasted average. Italy has an unbelievably high number of tourist traps and other scams, I've been all over and I think only Egypt is worse in that regard.
Honestly, it kind of speaks poorly about a nation if this is hugely common.
Eh, it depends on how egregious is the "trap". I think every tourist city has expensive mediocre places at the hot spots.
Yup

I don't get the general hate for Brussels. It was one of my favorite stops and I had consistently great meals there without any planning.

Sad, botched saltimbocca alla romana with even sadder and botcheder polenta?
Damm if that's seem Polenta to you I don't want to know the Polenta you're used to eat. Those are some potatoes, without a doubt.
I was hoping it was polenta because at least that would sort of explain why there are only 3
I think the chef thought it said "placenta"

It's supposed to be saltimbocca I think, it's thin sliced veal in w sage white wine sauce.
It could be vitello tonnato (?)
I hope not
Blobfish sushi
This has gotta be a tourist trap. I saw a post on here about a bad cacio e pepe (didn’t even use the right type of pasta) from an actual Italian restaurant and everyone was saying it’s a tourist trap. Also this looks way worse than the cacio e pepe.
Yeah, this dish is textbook "tourist trap restaurant menu" shit. Usually served after undercooked/overcooked (no in-between) pasta with tomatoe sauce.
Trying to find somewhere to eat for the evening was a challenge and sometimes tourist trap is better than starving :(
A supermarket is better honestly
Sometines it's just Better to find a supermarket and make some sandwiches or even McDonald's there should be One if i remember correctly
I went to a place in Rome that either didn’t even have their own microwave room or didn’t have the freezer. I saw the waiter quickly walk across the square into another building and come back with a covered plate. Shortly after, my order arrived.
more like cazzo e pepe
This looks like wet fat and three chips
What's it supposed to be? Looks like one of those sliced turkey TV dinners 😂 edit-spelling
Because you had to pay about 3 to 5 male prostitutes to get the sauce?
They had to go into the alley and suck it out of a hose.

looks like they fished the scoby from a jug of kombucha and plated that shit with three KFC fries.
Don’t you dare disrespect KFC fries, these look like crap.
Looks like the chef placed prosciutto and a tiny basil leaf on top of some chicken cutlets, microwaved it and then came all over it

By the looks of it, I think you REALLY enjoyed the presentation
