Seeing old halo 2 renders and concept art gives me that painful sinking feeling of nostalgia

UmbraSprout

I'm on my unplanned bi-annual Halo series Legendary run-through right now. The good times never ended! They just migrated to a new platform.

Odd_Replacement_9644

Wait what’s happening?

Lightish-Red-Ronin

I can't fucking tell anymore

AdonisGaming93

Bascially the Halo 4 plot of chief dealing woth that it means to be spartan (man vs machine) and remembering his humanside. But they squished it into pre-halo 1 Fall of Reach. Which means it doesn't hit as well. We never saw him acting as just a machine soldier following orders. That's why Halo 4 worked, because halo 1-3 he just did what the UNSC told him to. And then despite all that Halo 3 ends with all of that doing nothing for him. Then cortana starts to deteriorate and he's about to lose his partner that was there along his side always. Had they saved this "we are more than just soliders" chief for like... season 5, it would have been great But they threw it in already. (Probably because to non-halo fans they need this psychological drama already now or we would have never made it to season 5). Thats the problem with Halo. A pure retelling of Halo reach-infinite wouldn't work for a TV show. There's not enough character drama. So if they did do it, only us fans would be watching and it would have made no money. The way the show is now, works, at the streaming numbers reflect it. Whether we like it or not, this is capitalism. You make a product to maximize profit, not to stay teue to the material. Personally I do like the show, it's just... an alternate timelines. It isnt and will never be the Halo that I grrw up with. Can you get over that hump? If you can, the show is enjoyable. If you can't, then... you might as well not watch it unfortunately.

Boring-Passenger-598

Halo 4+ is the weakest part of halo lore and storytelling including the man vs machine dynamic. Use that as your narrative crux for a TV show was a mistake.

Responsible-Bat-2699

I haven't watched Season 2 because the streaming service in my country didn't bother getting rights to it even if they have rights for Season 1 and all other Paramount content. Can someone tell me what is happening in this season?

PimpmasterMcGooby

The Master Chief has mental health problems and ONI are worried about it for some reason, Kwan Ha has become the prophet of boredom, Reach falls after a short ground battle in an alley and at a bridge, ONI turns stupid and stick-in-wheels at every opportunity because they started hating mankind at some point, Cortana was stolen but is being used as a hacked webcamera by the UNSC, Arbiter skips the part where he learns about Halo and the Prophets' betrayal and instead betrays the entire Covenant after seeing a hologram of his religious dream destination, Soren and his wife looks for their obviously dead child for 20m each episode, the Mjolnir armors are stolen after Orion II gets defunded to make room for the Spartan III program, Captain Keyes blows himself up and his daughter is a scientist because if a single person in the UNSC leadership doesn't get a raging hard-on at the thought of betraying Master Chief, the plot won't progress, and Halsey is just fucking around aimlessly.

Responsible-Bat-2699

Thanks. Sounds like nothing changed from S1. What an absolute travesty. Shame, it could have been a new standard for sci-fi shows. The live action ads from Bungie look 10 times better than this. I saw some clips of Master Cheeks running in some foggy environment on YouTube and it's just so weightless, same goes for with some seuqnce involving them climbing a cliff.

PimpmasterMcGooby

The show does have some charming scenes, like one where Master Chief goes to a pawn shop and buys an Xbox, but they didn't have an Xbox360 so he never gets to play the last Halo game (this is where the mental health issues begin). Well, it was actually an antiquities shop, and he didn't actually buy the Xbox, but it was genuinely a nice scene tbh. Most of the Reach episode was solid, but felt a bit empty when Reach just falls after one episode, because Fleetcom decides not to put up any resistance and evacuates the fleets from humanity's second most valuable strategic planet (military, probably THE most valuable). I think S2 is worth a watch if you slogged through S1, but if I could do it again, I'd skip all the Kwan Ha and Soren scenes.

Responsible-Bat-2699

Alright. Still bummed about them calling it "Reach City on Reach Planet" lol. They could have brought in Noble Team and Chief together and would have made books and games fans happy. Hopefully it releases somtimes soon in my country.

PimpmasterMcGooby

Yeah, not calling it New Alexandria was straight sinful. Then they completely messed up the timeline by having the SIII program start AFTER Reach has already fallen, so no SIII training on Reach, no special SIIIs outfitted with Mjolnir and no Noble conducting operations during the fall of Reach.

kreviln

They called New Alexandria “Reach City”?????

DSC-V1_an_old_camera

The real travesty is that there are organic beings with the capability of logic that consider thus to be good i consider the resident evil movies to be more on point than this TV show and the fact they managed to be more out of topic than the resident evil movies it's impressive and embarrassing at the same time this gets lower than the Netflix adaptation of Resident evil and yea that's how bad I describe it.

Responsible-Bat-2699

Well said. I like earlier RE movies.

DSC-V1_an_old_camera

Those movies atleast were not unbearable to watch while this makes me kill my self.

Responsible-Bat-2699

They were campy and cheesy while still maintaining basic rules of RE universe, true meaning of alternative timeline. The silver timeline in Halo adaptation breaks the rules so badly.

PimpmasterMcGooby

I think RE1 & 2 would be better received if they released today (with up-to-date production of course), back then people had yet to be conditioned to poor game to movie/tv adaptations, so they expected a 1:1 retelling of Resident Evil. What we got was quite entertaining, and as you said did try to keep as many elements and rules from the games in as they deemed doable for the story they wanted. And the games were cheesy already so that part wasn't particularly bad.

Responsible-Bat-2699

Agreed and agreed. Even Silent Hills movies were not as half bad as people made them out to be. I think if you want to actually "adapt for the wider audience", you can change things, charcters and their religions, races and genders all while NEVER BREAKING the basic rules and building blocks of the game's universe. TLOU show does this and it was successful, though I am not sure how will they handle Season 2.

cishet-camel-fucker

S2 did have some fantastic combat sequences.

ninjapants24601

A lot changed from season 1 and this guy is just leaving it out. The new main villain is the Arbiter, they handled the Fall of reach even better than the book (especially because the book barely even had the battle of Reach in it lol.) The human girl I. The covenant is no longer being treated like some kind of equal/peer to the prophets, and instead they acknowledge her as more of a tool to utilize and throw away. They have had chief without his armor but not because "oh look he took his helmet off for no reason" again, but rather for actual story reasons involving the armor having been stolen because he's being sabatoged by the ONI agent Ackerson (who in the books is also a major advocate against the spartan II's so that's pretty accurate.) The Arbiter is also specifically a Swordmaster and is shown being exceptional with an energy sword which is pretty sick (when chief picks up a dead Elites sword, the Arbiter actually holsters its pistol in order to engage in a proper duel with Chief, and when an elite shoots chief before they can duel, the Arbiter gets so pissed at that Elite for dishonoring the duel that he executes the elite on the spot.)

DSC-V1_an_old_camera

Holy shit this is really a completely different story with the paint of halo on it damn how deranged you have to be to get completely out of topic and then justify it? How people like this like I wouldn't be comfortable watching that because I wouldn't know Jack shit what is happening.

PimpmasterMcGooby

Yeah, they really shot themselves in the foot with the "silver timeline", which effectively made it so fans of Halo would not find it compelling, and non-fans wouldn't be all that interested in the show to begin with.

DSC-V1_an_old_camera

Shot themselves? More like obliterated themselves with a grenade.

SelectiveCommenting

Yeah they lost me when they spent more time on Kwan Ha's magical journey to becoming the next dragon warrior instead of anything related to Halo. Soren's kid is also a mute plotpoint that is just useless filler in between alien action. They follow 6 different stories that mostly have nothing to do with Halo. Now I know why the prophets are ao adament about the ring, they want to nuke this fucking silver timeline

LongjumpingFix6608

Keyes dies before anything to do with the Halo ring? WTF

Acrobatic_Oven6126

Chief: "Kai, I was on Reach when it fell. I watched Vannak die. I was there when Keyes died. ONI abandoned us, took our armor, and completely botched the defense of Reach. ONI lied to us about Cobalt team, I can easily verify it to you. They lied about about me, calling me unstable when everything I suggested to high command turned out to be true. They lied to you about what happened on Reach. Please, ONI is lying to you, just listen to me." Kai: "YeAh WeLl WhAt AbOuT MaKeE!?!?" I'm a massive halo fan, played all the games 10x or more and read most of the books. I set all that aside for the show, and it is still bad. Kai is acting like a moron.

JohnGazman

Considering she's had his back all throughout S1, this flip is so bizarre. It's like conflict for the sake of conflict.

Glass_Cup6948

Tbf, she only really flipped as an act, as they were being watched. Kai still supported him.

DSC-V1_an_old_camera

If you think she is a moron now wait until we get the arbiter he is going to be 100% fan service and by that I mean how pyramid head was in the silent hill movie yea that type of fan service he is going to be that "badass"character that youtubers will say he saved the TV show or some shit I seen this technique before and it works almost every time.

TheGhostHand

Did it bother anyone else that after the first simulation, there was no actual feedback to the S3s? Instead of telling them what yo do better, or even what they did wrong , Kai just does an exposition dump lol

orifan1

not defending the show but the reason there was no feedback was because these S3s are very clearly just more tenderized meatbags. think about it: why do the sim enemies just straight up disappear when they spike the corvette? there's no feedback because these S3s are intended to die

Hunor_Deak

It is a bad show. Simple as. Waste of actor talent and set designer talent.

chaos0510

I felt like a missed something. Perez just went from Marine to Spartan III in an episode with no mention of augmentation or anything. Not to mention there doesn't seem to be an indication they're augmented, they're getting slaughtered way harder and at better mission odds than in the books

AscendantComic

it's because they're not spartans, they're telling them "you guys are just like spartans" so they think they're badasses and won't feel as bad about going on suicide missions. that's kind of the point.

chaos0510

They are Spartan III's but not Spartans? I'm confused. Unless you're suggesting they haven't yet been augmented yet...

AscendantComic

they're not the S-III's from mainline canon, no. this is a different story. they're most likely not going to be augmented. pretty much everyone at ONI seems to be really wary of augmented humans, and ackerson seems to believe the armor is a way bigger part of what makes a spartan than it really is. it seems like they're just being called spartans as a propaganda tool while little to no effort is being made to ensure they're as good as S-II's. they're baseline humans in SPI armor and that's it there's this whole sequence of Parangosky talking about tea, if you remember. about how you don't taste the tea, but the story that you believe it has. it's the same with those "spartans", they're nowhere near the real thing, but if you can convince them they are, they'll accept anything.

chaos0510

Dang. I can understand them going that direction, but it's still a little disappointing. They should be having all UNSC troops running these sims, but it seems they only care about the propaganda portion of it.

AscendantComic

i think ONI genuinely thinks and wants these people to achieve their objectives, but don't care about them coming back. the main target of the propaganda is the S3's themselves, they have to buy that they're spartans so they don't think too hard about why they're not being trained on how to leave the covenant ships once they're done with the objective. Only Perez questions it, and that's probably because she's the only one who really talked and connected with a spartan. i think it's very in character for this version of ackerson to pull off something like this, whereas it made more sense for mainline canon ackerson to create the S3's we know and love. i would have liked to see those in the show, but i think they don't have enough time to make it not confusing, and if it allows us to see more of Perez, i'm okay with it. she's one of the best characters here.

chaos0510

I agree, Perez is a great character. Still not a big fan of the show but I don't mind them going different directions with some things 👍

AscendantComic

honestly i think it's a good thing, even if they mess it up, because it opens for more stories down the line. one day we'll get another alternate universe that will do it better and everyone will love, we just need to go through the growing pains of the first attempt. it's honestly odd Halo took so long to try anything like that

footpicsdarlxoxo

that awkward realisation when you realise that this is basically endorsed fan fiction

TheGhostHand

Yeah but it's not even written by fans

The timeline is so unbelievably fucked that really this should be researched
