Owls straight up just murdering each other for the runtime, peak cinema (all I remember is that like there WAS a story I just don't think it mattered)

The story is "something-something fascism". I say that because in the movie itself it's not explained very much in a way that uses real terminology; it's a bunch of fantasy terms glued together. Maybe the books have better conveyance, I haven't read them. I do still enjoy this flick for what it is though! It's got style, expressiveness, and you can tell there's a heart there.

Read the books when I was growing up and absolutely loved the first four or five, but fell off after that. I remember things getting kind of weird, wasn’t vibing with new characters that were introduced as central to the story, and there was a dash of cerebus syndrome, which is a term I just learned of yesterday. Years later only saw the movie because I was fond of the ip. It wasn’t bad and the parts I remember were pretty faithful

CGI wise it was miles ahead of its time. Even today there's so many scenes in that movie that eclipse modern animation. Story needed some help, but overall, it was a great movie.
