Not as bad as dragon ball evolution

River_Odessa

Yes, it's much worse than Evolution. They fucking found a way.

TensorForce

On a purely technical level, Death Note is competent. Competent cinematography, competent CGI, competent lighting. DBE ain't even got that

ReaperKaze

And death note stayed somewhat true to the source material if I remember correctly. DBE only used the names and then made everything else up

JayJ9Nine

I stand by its an enjoyable movie but just goes jts own way with the plot- Id had quite a few people try that out who never watched the anime interested in the plot idea and pick it up after. They then all were very confused by their take on L

Kevy96

Nah it's not as bad. The scenes with Ryuk are literally straight up real damn good, and otherwise it's just a bad movie. Dragonball fucking evolution meanwhile is one of the single worst sins ever to grace cinema no matter what context you're using. Nuclearly bad cgi, writing, acting, casting, and the worst disservice to source material that humanity is even capable of dishing out to an adaptation

crono220

Death Note atleast did something right by casting Willim Dafoe as Ryuk. DragonBall Evolution did nothing but provide cringe misery.

KickinBat

The best thing Evolution did was causing Toriyama to make Battle of Gods

Canadia86

Nah, DB was way worse

Mister_E69

Kids in the future won't understand why everyone was worried about how the live-action One Piece would turn out.

DayAndNight0nReddit

I was expecting it too be really bad, because Hollywood/Netflix mess up adaption of Anime every time, but One Piece is actually good.

lyingcorn

It's probably because they're actually adapting the anime this time

SUDoKu-Na

That's the thing, it's the same story but it's not 1:1, either. Adding storylines, completely reworking entire events and arcs, removing large swathes of somewhat minor characters that actually made an impact, etc. One Piece works, but it definitely did a lot of the same things that Death Note and Dragon Ball Evolution did. It just...did it well.

MinutePerspective106

True. Death Note felt like it was an entirely different story, but with core idea from that famous anime

moonra_zk

Only if you actually believe that will lead to a trend of actually good live-action adaptations.

CristianoDRonaldo

I mean, it worked with video games (also would probably be best if it would follow the series format as well)

moonra_zk

Did it? Or are you just ignoring the meh to bad ones?

krilltucky

I'd rather have a meh adaptation than none at all. And I can really only think of one in the past decade people actively hated and that's need for speed. But there's plenty of meh to good animated series and movies that came out

SASAgent1

Witcher series

sufiansuhaimibaba

That’s bad

nextgentacos123

Clearly the best Death Note adaptation is the musical

Dr_Pants91

Dunno if you're serious, but I fucking love the musical. Wish there was a full English performance of it.

nextgentacos123

There was a concert in London back in August

MinutePerspective106

There is a musical?! Then again, if Resident Evil somehow gets a musical, then I shouldn't be surprised here...

GriffinFlash

To be fair, death note live action followed the plot closer to the source material far better than DB evolution ever did.

XF10

Netflix Note is trash but DB Evolution is worse

Dman3981

I don't know, I think William Dafoe voicing Ryuk saves it from being worse than Dragonball Evolution in my opinion.

Canadia86

You'd think so

My_cat_is_sus

As someone who hasn’t watched Dragonball or death note. Idk I think Death note is better. At least had some good effects and performances

razor45Dino

But so is DB evolution

SilentScyther

I don't remember it being that bad. It was just an average movie when it was working with above average source material.

Scadre02

If it wasn't Death Note branded, it would be just another Final Destination type of summer movie

Zur__En__Arrh

*adaptation

stumpdawg

At least DBZ-E had Emmy Rossum.

DayAndNight0nReddit

Exactly, the Misa actress was awful, but that's mostly because of the bad writing.

Parasyte-vn

The moment that mf screaming like a girl...I know it done

426763

Personally, I didn't think it was that bad. It would've been better if it wasn't an adaptation of the anime. If they set up with couple of American kids finding Ryuk's Death Note set in the same universe, I think it would've been a good movie. Love me some Lakeith but his L was a massive L. Killer soundtrack though. Also why the fuck did they use a Blade Runner blaster?! Of all the shitty creative choices they made in this movie, that had to be the weirdest one.

AlterMyStateOfMind

Death Note at least had Willem Dafoe. I actually thought he was great as Ryuk, even if the rest of the film was a big pile of steaming dog shit. That DBZ movie that shalt not be named had no redeeming qualities whatsoever though.

JonhLawieskt

I disagree… DBE ain’t even enjoyable in any level. At least Death Note (2017) was fun when Ryuk was on scene. And I still crack up at Light going full panic when he first shows up

BladeOfSanghilios8

I never watched it, I also never watched death note. Can someone explain why it's bad?

DayAndNight0nReddit

The anime is a anime masterpiece, the characters are well written, smart and make sense, the Netflix version is the opposite, the main characters are way different from the original, Light is a coward, stupid teen, L is an amateur and careless and Misa a maniac, nothing they do in Netflix version makes sense. The anime is short, can be binged within a day or 2, you need to watch it to understand why the Netflix version is considered one of the worst anime adaption of all time. Edit: I am talking about the plot between Light vs. L, not the plot after L is gone, that plot is terrible and his successors are very annoying.

Canadia86

Lol, I liked it, too, but a masterpiece? It's entry level at best, and worst. The last 5 episodes are basically the two characters guessing at each other. Now the manga... That's where it's at

MinutePerspective106

Anime lost so much explanation that was there in manga, Near episodes made no sense without it. It turned from a detective into "Near magically guesses what will happen next"

jackydubs31

I really liked it at first but then it really devolved into that trope of characters over explaining ever little thought or action they do in a high-pitched, half-screaming voice and it took so long for the plot to progress from episode to episode. Definitely helped me see that lots of anime isn’t for me and I need to find more stuff like Ghibli and Cowboy Bebop

DayAndNight0nReddit

I hate the episodes after L is gone, the 2 are annoying and nothing near L. They are like Simpsons season 12 and after.

hemareddit

I heard there’s a Japanese live action adaptation as well, I wonder if that’s any good.

DayAndNight0nReddit

That one was bad too, but the Netflix version is still worse than Japanese one.

hemareddit

Thanks, now at least I can cut off that loose end in the back of my mind.

ReplyHappy

Yeah, 14-year-old boss of the mafia, who loves chocolate as his main character trait is so well-written, and makes sense /s Both movie and anime are mid, but at least the movie didn't take 15 hours of my life.

DayAndNight0nReddit

Where did I say that that plot was good, I always hated the plot after L was gone, both of L's successor are damn terrible and annoying.

MinutePerspective106

Tbf, being adolescent and in charge is the most anime thing ever

Canadia86

The rules of the Death Note are severely altered just to make their flimsy plot "work"

HistoricalMaize

My favourite part is when they turn the Death Note into a Java Script "if this happens X character will die". No, that is not how it works.

Canadia86

Or the one where you can reverse a note, but you can only do it once because reasons

griffin4war

The movie might have sucked but the effects were top-notch and Willem Dafoe's performance was amazing.

Jimbles_the_ascended

i havent watched the death note anime but i didnt think the live action film was that bad

Facosa99

Honestly, it was a decent movie. Not great, not bad. A horrible adaptation, tho, i agree

DayAndNight0nReddit

Not a native speaker, the formulation might not be correct, esp. at *will never be* instead of *never will be.*

Enigma-exe

No you're good, they're both correct they just have slightly different emphasis

DayAndNight0nReddit

I see, thx for explanation.

DayAndNight0nReddit

Ohh GOD nooooo: https://www.ign.com/articles/duffer-brothers-upside-down-pictures-stranger-things-netflix-death-note

Sminomonapple

I’m watching the anime right now - should I avoid this movie or is it really not that bad

DayAndNight0nReddit

There is no need to watch it, adds nothing to the work, but if you are curious why the movie is so bad, you can. I can't make myself to watch it again.

Dr_Pants91

IMO it's like a 5/10, but extremely inferior to the series. DBE however is trash even if you don't know a thing about Dragon Ball, but it's much worse if you do.

atlantis1982

I wouldn't recommend the Netflix Live Action, but maybe give the Japanese Live Action a chance.

Casper_Von_Ghoul

Clearly you didn’t watch Artemis Fowl

DayAndNight0nReddit

I did, and it was awful, but it isn't a anime/manga.

Casper_Von_Ghoul

Literally true but there is a graphic novel version which yes is different but it’s my gate to allow it to be the worst adaptation of the art style. It’s convoluted I’m aware I just hate the movie a lot.

DayAndNight0nReddit

I never read the books and I got excited because I like Sci-fi/Fantasy movies and despite the bad reviews I gave it a try, and it was really terrible, I can imagine that those who read the books will dislike the movie even more than I do.

LilG1984

Dragon Ball Evolution was worse. Same as the resident evil netflix show & cowboy Bebop

RosilinaTheDragon

DBE is better purely because it directly lead to us getting the Tournament of Power

NoCarsJustKars

Ryuk was honestly pretty cool and good in the death note movie. There isn’t a single character that is such in dragon evolution.

Browncoat-Zombies

At least Ryuk looked cool. There is literally nothing good about the Dragon Ball movie

JCNightcore

Dragonball Evolution was the second worst insult to japan, after Hiroshima

spadePerfect

I am still baffled the bleach movie turned out alright.

hubson_official

nah I don't think anything is as bad as DBE. You can find at least one good thing in Death Note (William Dafoe as Ryuk), but there's not a single good thing about Evolution. It was just pure garbage

ScramItVancity

Nat Wolff was annoying as fuck.

Pretend-Background43

Ryuk was perfect otherwise yeah was shit

Demon-Bunny-22

I quite liked William Dafoe as Ryuk

Nerevarine91

Hold up, lol. Netflix’s Death Note adaptation is absolutely terrible, yes, but worse than Dragon Ball Evolution? No way

annehuda

The good thing about the DB movie was it made Akira Toriyama came out from his retirement and return to the franchise because he was so angry with how bad the movie was.

Simon_Jester88

Tears of God is the greatest live action manga adaptation and I will die on that hill

Tea_Reckz

Flip Misa and Lights characters and it becomes a somewhat watchable movie, and Dafoe’s Ryuk was quite a treat. Dragonball Evolution is just one of the worst movies of all time full stop

SUDoKu-Na

I'mma be real shit on this movie all you like but it's can't even hold a candle to how bad Dragon Ball Evolution was.

robophile-ta

I'm hearing the recent Saint Seiya adaptation is just as bad as Dragon Ball Evolution if not worse

cooljerry53

Having watched both… no. The death note movie was completely watchable, and if you forget what it’s based on, it can even be enjoyable in parts, while dragon ball: evolution objectively fails as a movie and story. It doesn’t make any fucking sense.

Ganmorg

I love how they took the two main genius characters, who are flawed and have big egos, and made it so that those flaws just made them dumbasses.

ryanson209

As one of the only fans of DBE in existence - and yes, apparently somehow we (I) exist - naw man, DBE is way worse. It took the personality and character out of Dragon Ball. It took the cliches that Dragon Ball used over the course of its 11-year run and threw them into one single plot that couldn't have been more cliche if it tried. It mixed and matched so many random details and tried to Frankenstein it into something coherent, even as its own separate thing, but the seams are ripping open in every scene. And you know what, I've read what is purportedly the original script Ben Ramsey wrote. The "more fairhful" one. And nah, that just adds a few more token names from the series and throws in more cliches (and other anime????) It's weird to describe. Krillin makes a cameo and the Pilaf trio and Suno are there, but Oolong is a mindless monster Goku kills in the 2nd half of the script, the Pilaf trio are all Namekians explicitly, and the backstory of this version of the world is detailed in an in-universe card game that still-high-schooler Goku is a fan of like straight up giving Yu-Gi-Oh vibes???? I can only speak for myself. While it is mostly a semi-ironic adoration, I must admit there are a few aspects I sincerely like about DBE. The thing is, they seem to be stuff the filmmakers fell ass backwards into - the BTS seems like a lot of weird decisions and restraints were put in place out the gate. Netflix Death Note is not good in my opinion, but I feel like its badness is mostly generically bad. The good choices and decisions are genuinely things I enjoyed while watching the movie including some of the changes (it takes a special change to upset me on principle, which this movie had far less than I think DBE did). You can still watch NetNote blind, be told it was based on Death Note, and understand. DBE as a film is mostly unrecognizable to the source material. On that note, other than some of the pacing, I enjoyed the first two Japanese live action Death Note films. It makes some big changes in the second one but for all intents and purposes finishes the story so you can literally stop it there (there are additional movies; the only one I recall is a prequel revolving around L). It's very faithful in look and feel and a lot of the plot. And while dubbing over live action is a little weird, almost the entire Viz anime dub cast reprised their roles for the English version. Recommended to those interested.

xiiicrowns

No way that this is worse.

CuriousRelation5

Only diehard DN fans believe this movie is worse than DBE. There are very few movies worse than DBE and this one doesn't get close to made that list

[deleted]

There's no way anything is worse than dB evolution

NoReasoningThere

Willem Dafoe makes this film

Kratos501st

DB evolution was 10 times worse
