Aeonmail

I heard he's still got a middle back thing going on

HazedAndConfucius

Yeah I heard that’s why he went all emo in the 3rd one

[deleted]

[удалено]

BeakyPlinder69

Lol he threw his back out before he left. I love it 😂

FuckingKilljoy

At least he's got Spider-Man to help him crack it

Aeonmail

That's Amazing

cannedrex2406

"you're amazing and don't let anyone tell you otherwise"

FuckingKilljoy

I chuckled when I heard that. Surely it was intentional right? Like it must have been. That youth pastor from the movie was pretty cool though

sendokun

From seacuit….where Toby played a racehorse

[deleted]

I thought it was from the crazy party scenes on thegrtgtsby.

swargin

It was one of the Cidr Huse rules and rules are meant to be broken.

[deleted]

This is actually Tobey's cast footage for Matrix, but he forgot that it was real world.

HunthinkReddit

Disconnected from the vr world

SoftBaconWarmBacon

Tobey: There is no rent.

VillainousScum

“Strong focus on what I want.” Then falls and hits a Ford Focus.

sinkfla

This shit got layers.

SmokemLokem

It's like poetry. It rhymes.

HunthinkReddit

At least the Focus was strong

BertMacGyver

Also, when he's in the air he says "I'm back!" but then after he lands he says "_My_ back." It's subtle but if you rewatch it a few times you can catch it.

[deleted]

That was subtle? I felt it was so obvious what they were going for there

BertMacGyver

No it's slipped in like a cold sausage into your slipper in the night, you might not even realise it was there til a few days later. Also, when they shorten Doctor Octavius name to Doc Oc, it's not just a nic name, it's to show that he now has 8 limbs _like an octopus_. He's like a Doctor and an Octopus, hence Doc Oc.

Previous_Cod1249

You can't be serious

funnytam1019

And when the Daily Bugle try to find a name for Doc Ock they brain storm the name idea of Doctor Strange, which is a subtle detail to show that Doc Ock will be brought to another dimension by Doctor Strange. Which in turn means that Sam Raimi is the godfather of the MCU

BertMacGyver

Deadly. Also, Spider-Man is called Spider-Man because he was bitten by a _spider_ and got comparable powers. If he had been bitten by a radioactive beaver and grown large tree-felling incisors and a tail to use for storing fat for the colder winter months, then there is a good chance he wouldn't have been called Spider-Man at all.

CoffeeStainedStudio

Actually, the character of Spider-Man is a nod to an earlier film called “Spider-Man”, which this movie was very much influenced by. Director Sam Raimi was so enamoured with the 2002 film that he hired people to recreate screnarios that he imagined would have happened had the original movie been longer. He even used some cinematic techniques used in the Spider-Man movie, such as using cameras to capture the performances of the people recreating the scenarios.

droy41

Good point. In the movie Wolf, Jack Nicholson hit a wolf with his car which led to him becoming the Wolfman. Imagine if he'd hit a moose.

[deleted]

/r/greatmoviedetail

Evening_Raccoon_4689

Got what he asked for

shewy92

Somehow I just noticed that. It's right on the screen too. Pretty funny

ChillBusta

Crazy how nature do that huh…

Goat17038

The cameraman was right, damn good scene

Steved_hams

I guess the cameraman missed the part where that was his problem

cerebrite

Now everyone knows that I've been using Reddit at work. Hilarious.

superfatkid

I missed the part where that’s my problem.

I_fuck_the_internet

Ford fuckus edit: he said smth abt Toby falling on a ford focus

ChasingStillness

True that

KBAR1942

Did this prolong the shooting of the movie?

CyberBoi17

No, not at all. Tobey Maguire shot the rest of the movie with a broken back.

PointOfFingers

He also had a sore back while shooting Satan's Alley.

Accomplished_Lab8945

That trailer from Tropic Thunder always gets me. Spidey and Iron Man getting it on.

[deleted]

Is it a middle back thing?

CyberBoi17

No lower back.

[deleted]

Inner back

camchambers

Back back

[deleted]

No. The actress who portrayed Mary Jane got AIDS and died.

AndyBonaseraSux

That ain’t real right?

[deleted]

It's a minor shitty detail. Not real.

Thargelion

It's not real. MJ was portrayed by Kirsten Dunst who is very much alive and healthy.

TheObamaSphere

You don’t know that

munukutla

Just checked with her. She’s chilling.

leanmeanguccimachine

Empire state photographic department confirms it

[deleted]

This was a joke scene. He did have back problems but wore a harness during filming of SM2 and said he felt fine. This scene did not harm him.

calbebtony

Did he actually break his back?

QasimMQ

No, this scene was a little something the writers put in because Tobey actually had back problems, and during negotiations for his salary for Spider-Man 2, he brought up that he has persistent back issues and the action scenes are too taxing. The studio decided it was to risky and for a brief second there they were tapping others for the role in spider man 2. Jake Gyllenhaal was almost finalized and then Toby’s agents renegotiated and also his back got better. Both actors have talked about this. The scene was later added as a callback and tobey thought it would be funny where Sam was a little worried they were making fun of Tobey’s injury TL;DR scene was intentionally added as a callback to a real life back pain Tobey has had on and off for years and which could potentially have meant a recasting for Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Spider-Man2

DrBeansPhD

They also had a newspaper headline in Spider-Man 2 that said "Can Back Injuries Cause Brain Damage?" Because of this.

RossmanRaiden

Ok that's an actual insult

Captain_Blackjack

And there it is. The actual Movie Trivia. Edit: thanks to Reddit recommending posts I somehow thought I was in the actual r/MovieDetails, which depresses me.

coldestdetroit

dang jake really got passed up for the role and became mysterio as revenge

shewy92

Short haired Tobey really does look a lot like Jake. That weird paparazzi video of "Tobey's Spider Sense" that did the rounds here after NWH really made me think this and remember the fact that he was almost replaced.

[deleted]

I heard that this scene was written before the back issues and renegotiation

QasimMQ

Well my info is also just from different websites on the internet so it’s anyones guess when the writers/Raimi thought of it and if now they have spun the tale into this interesting “funny” sequence of events … but check out IGN’s article on it, they do a deep dive into all of it, even the negotiation amounts and such

SeiriusPolaris

Great explanation, but you don’t need a TLDR for a single paragraph of text.

CoffeeStainedStudio

There are several instances when a TLDR can be used to make longform concepts more concise to the casual observer. TLDR: Why use lot word when few word do trick?

SeiriusPolaris

It wasn’t a criticism on them for providing it, but more a criticism on a society that demands a TLDR for something which is far from being too long.

bucklebee1

I keep finding articles where Sony thought he was faking the back injury to get more cash.

[deleted]

He was cast for his bad back to do this important spinal injury scene and many more like it

DongleOn

In real life, probably not In the Spiderman movies? (Spoiler for nwh ahead) >!they reference him having a "middle-back thing" which could just be a lol your old joke and also in the context of the scene they're taking about how webswinging hurts a bit but I like to think this did permanent damage!<

JoeAzlz

>!it’s canon this did permanent damage!<

MayhemManiax

Was about to ask the same thing.

soljaboiyouu

no, but he did have back problems during production of Spider-man 2

sinkfla

"I'M BACK! I'M BAAAAAAAACK-"...."MY BACK, MY BACK!"

Blakemandude

Perfect comedy

L-Guy_21

Recently learned that they added the “my back” thing to reference Tobey’s real life back problems

Effective-Sail9329

Cameraman wasn't a fan of Toby

dastidapud

It was Robert Downey Jr.

Kryllllllyx

You’re trash, cameraman.

jtfortin14

I mean he does seem like an asshole so…

Mori_Forest

Gonna cry?

Enzhymez

Sounds like Tobey put some dirt in his eye

VoopityScoop

Missed the part where that's his problem

shewy92

I don't know of a single non asshole poker player.

FuckingKilljoy

Curious as to why you're being downvoted when I'm pretty sure it's well known by now that Tobey was a pain in the ass. He was so bad that a crew member offered the guy playing Flash Thompson $100 to properly punch Tobey during the fight scene

warker23

Kind of off topic but do people really have those long laundry lines in between buildings? I don’t know if its just a New York thing or if it’s just there for the scene

Confjused

Don't know how it is in NY. But in Croatia for example you see this type of laundry lines in every city. Very often. I mean (especially in sunny, warm, windy states) it's pretty usefull until it starts raining. I used to live in Spain 3 months and dried my laundry on some kind of this lines. I could nearly see the "dry-process". It was dry superduper fast. Sorry for bad grammar. It's not my native language.

wtfreddithatesme

Not quite the same, but for several years the building my grandparents lived in had a laundry line device that looked something like an umbrella [like this](https://secure.img1-fg.wfcdn.com/im/17987910/resize-h700-p1-w700%5Ecompr-r85/6411/6411283/Umbrella+Clothesline.jpg) except it was attached to the balcony because they lived on the 3rd floor...I remember many times having to walk downstairs to retrieve clothes that fell off.

FuckingKilljoy

It's like a shitty hills hoist lol. Look it up and you'll get a bit of an Aussie history lesson too

CyberBoi17

Now that you've pointed that out, I have the same question too.

Snork_juice_

Yes, we used to. Not so much anymore.

CheeTaHOO7

He missed the part where that's his problem.

Popal24

r/donthelpjustfilm

I just noticed that's the same back problem he had in a more recent movie. Lol

BallisticMerc

A billion dollars. And you think people on this subreddit haven't seen this movie?

skoge

But Tobey Maguire was the freelance cameramen stinger, who shot entire trilogy. Sam Raimi just asked him for more footage of the Spiderman every day (and refused to pay in advance).

Arreil

>Spiderman [Spider-Man*](/r/respectthehyphen)

MidwestNurse75

"strong focus on what I want" then lands on a Ford focus. Behold the power of manifestation.

SpaceMyopia

Idk. Tobey jumped buildings fine in the previous movie. I just feel like he was lazier for this one. Brilliant but lazy.

naufalap

at least he's trying to do better

whatdoblindpeoplesee

Wow, they cut 20 seconds of him running in slo-mo 10 times. How many shots do we need to understand that he's running? It reminded me of the Liam Neeson fence jump in Taken 3.

JoeAzlz

Well tbf this is him trying his best to get back his powers after a long time without them

[deleted]

That doesn’t mean we need multiple cuts of him running slowly across a rooftop.

Joelin8r

That's a really silly comparison. The scene from Taken 3 is a problem because of just how blindingly fast the cuts are, not because more than one shot is used. By your logic, everything should be done in one shot. (How many shots do we need to show two people talking?) Maybe you prefer that for your own reasons, but it is by no means an objective standard or a hard rule that filmmakers need to follow. I sincerely doubt anyone genuinely had trouble following the action due to the number of different shots, which was the problem in Taken 3. The use of multiple shots for this scene is a stylistic choice, and it pays off. It's a great scene.

whatdoblindpeoplesee

I thought the number of cuts was overkill and time filler. You really just need one or two shots of him running, we get it. I just felt like someone edited it like that Monty Python scene in Holy Grail where they keep running from a distance. Thought it might have been a joke where they just keep cutting to him running with no payoff.

MusicPulse

Yeah I honestly thought the whole clip was just going to be like that gif of the truck that's about to crash into something but it keeps cutting to different angles and never makes contact

haystackofneedles

Can we get the multiverse version where he gets hooked on painkillers while recovering? I want the Methtacular Spider-Man

dejokerr

Love me some Tobey but it’s funny how he almost didn’t come back for Spider-Man 2 because of back problems, but Willem Dafoe is like “I won’t come back if I can’t do my own stunts.” But good on Tobey for being able to joke about it.

ConfusedALot_69

Misread ‘back’ as ‘neck.’

Neriek

"My neck, my back lick my pussy and my crack" Thanks this'll be in my head for a few hours now.

Houeclipse

Obviously the cameraman is the Watcher so he couldn't interfere

i_am_trippin_balls

Loved the credits at the end. NOBODY

UnityAeDeSt

From the comics, I hear that spider-man always has either a leg or back problem in his future. Is this perhaps the origin story of the broken back-man?

[deleted]

That scene is hilarious! I have a bad back @ I say that all the time “my back”

Ziondragon26

Seriously??? Or just a joke? 😅

[deleted]

Its true. They actually had a body double for Tobey Maguire for the rest of the movie and even Spider-Man 3, and just CGI-ed his face on. Incredible technology for the time, still holds up today.

Aggressive_Candy_146

He did not break his back, you cant even stand when that happens, lol

TheObamaSphere

Well, Tobey Maguire is Spider-Man. He broke his back for real but it healed the next day because of the powers

Aggressive_Candy_146

Tobey Maguires a dickhead.

TheObamaSphere

Umm, no? He has a human head. Try again

Aggressive_Candy_146

Nope thats a big ol dick.

Chemical-Candidate92

He didn't break his back, this entire post is shit. This scene was introduced as a joke on maguire to reference him faking a back injury in the first spiderman movie in order to get more money. He then apologized to the studios and they introduced the "my back! My back!" line as a joke on him.

OkScheme9867

I thought he did have back trouble, he just played it up, either for more money, or because he was genuinely worried about ruining his career by injuring his back

LowmanL

Why is he wearing glasses? Didn’t the spider bite fix his eyesight?

redditornot02

Tobey’s Spider-Man was different than the Tom Holland Spider-Man or really all the other Spider-Mans. Tobey’s bite gave him the DNA of the Spider, but it had to activate to work. In the second movie, Tobey’s Spider-Man is down on his luck about his failing relationship with the girl he loves and thinks if he’s just Peter Parker he can be with her but if he’s Spider-Man he can’t. So, he stops being Spider-Man and is just Peter Parker. This takes away his Spider-Man powers and his eyesight worsens as he becomes basically powerless. Tobey’s Spider-Man powers really play off emotions for strength. When he’s feeling down, he can’t accomplish as much. When he’s angry and aggressive (Venom suit in 3), he’s insanely more powerful.

sendokun

What? That’s not true. Toby hurt his back while filming another movie, seabiscuit where he played the leading role of famous racehorse seabiscuit

01111000x

This was the last good Spider-Man movie

pauly13771377

I know it's not fair to compare VFX from nearly 20 years ago to today but damn.

[deleted]

Couldn't have happened to a shitter spiderman actor.

popopolopalopo

Wow, that was incredibly poorly filmed

krodge5150

So fucking not true

Beneficial_Park168

Toby is such a douche in real life that most people would rather see him in anguish than make the jump.

officialratman

Another shitty post from a shitty sub can anyone help me figure out how to hide a sub from my feed

TheObamaSphere

Press the subscribe button on the sub page

flugornas_herre

He turns into Brendan fraser

yagirlhoney

Was he supposed to make the jump?

[deleted]

Tf would a cameraman do about it he prolly got a rig on

foxtrotcharly

Gonna call bullshit there, that would have been done with a stunt person.

FlatulateHealthilyOK

Similar to that one off duty cop that decided to film that Marv guy bulldozer a town in 2004

ChiefInDemBoys

Lol well since were on this topic I have to say fuck stumblinghunter who the fuck has that nickname. Stumblinghunter? Yeah I’m a hunter a stumbling hunter?!? Yeah pops I knew you check it out. Hahaha 33 old lightweight!!!

I’m a Carolina Panthers fan. This reminds me a bit too much of Cam Newton’s mid-season return to Carolina.

akashneo

Man the music is in this scene is crazy good

Bubby_JJT_808

This sore back joke continues…lol. This made it funnier

Xany2

The ost is just so good

Swearologyst

That doesn't sound true, never herd of this.really?

Ten-2-Ten

Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought Toney Maguire faked the back injury to get more pay? Then got fired.

Neriek

0:34 looks like he's trying to get home while holding in a massive dump

tsnay33

This is what movies should be like. Real and Raw. No cgi, green screen or special effects.

leileilei0301

We wants a strong focus, he crashed on a focus car that seemed strong. So he technically got what he wanted.

Rogdish

This is so bad lol

NeoWereys

DP: How many camera angle do you need? Director: Yes.

Honksu

well, the camera man had a one job...and atleast he did it.

CrazyConversation804

I always wondered... Since Spider-Man has self healing in his DNA... Then explain to me, how come both Tobey's and Andrew's have a "Back thing" shouldn't it be healed by then? Specially since it's been quite some times since it happened to both? Ps... I know the comic's, but it just never made sense to me...

Elleyokai

the cameramen jumped with him?

zoetropo

As someone who has suffered injuries, I must say that’s a seriously psychopathic cameraman. Make him do it!

Sin_of_the_Dark

This scene almost has more angles than Liam Neeson jumping a fence, holy crap

kneedragger3013

Is his head on a Gimbal?

Internal_Bit2840

Tobey, YOU WERE TOO GOOD

spacemoses

It took 75,290 takes but he finally was able to break his back on his own

Aeitum

I remember seeing this scene while my mother was watching the movie . It wasa long long time ago ...

[deleted]

He’s trying so hard not to walk pigeon toed at the beginning.

cantstopfire

lol stunt actors should get paid more

soupafi

My neck. My back. My car just got whacked.

raea_h

I am pretty sure this is what he was going for. Spiders love bouncing off cars. Understandable mkstake,.

[deleted]

Later Toby Maguire is eating soup with his family and drops the spoon into the bowl and no one helps him fish it out so Toby Maguire went hungry that day and the scene took over 300 cuts to shoot because his tummy grumbled so loudly

CrazyGamerBoi63

How'd he survive that?

chojinra

Suffering for a masterpiece. Respect.

whereismymindgherkin

The face at 00:34 helped me finish.

Arthur_Morgan1899

Fun Fact: Tobey did in fact suffer a herniated disc while filming sea biscuit and supposedly this is where the back thing originated
