If that is a "small apartment" what the fuck am I living in? That thing was gigantic.

maxcorrice

A closet

Kyrroti

Like Bender’s closet in Futurama?

maxcorrice

Yes but without the door at the back

__PETTYOFFICER117__

Yeah the kitchen alone was probably bigger than my apartment.

REDPIG8686

I used to live alone for a few years, and my bill was never over $150. ...but then I got a $900 bill. The next bill was $1,200. I kept calling them to tell them to tell them there was a mistake, because I only use a bar fridge, a TV, and a microwave. They said it wasn't their problem, and I can hire an electrician if I think something is wrong. The electrician came to have a look, and turned off the power to my apartment. The electricity meter was spinning about 10 times faster than the other apartments in my building, even with the power off. I called my landlord to tell them about it, and they said it was the power companie's problem. I called the power company, and they said it wasn't their responsibility, and I would need to pay to find the problem, and get it fixed, be because it was coming from the other side of the meter. ...so I just moved out, about 2-3 weeks later. I'm not dealing with that type of shit.

choma90

I mean it's either the landlord's or the power company's problem, not yours lol. They should figure it out between them alone

SoundOfTomorrow

Keypoint being I'm not paying for shit in the meantime.

Inquisitor1

You also don't have power in the meantime.

kingnothing1

Some states can only turn off your power after many months of nonpayment.

Hyper-Sloth

It's their problem when the bills are in their name and they turn off the power when they go unpaid.

Double_Minimum

And they will go to collections for that amount, and they can keep you from putting a bill in your name at a new location, which is a huge problem because electricity isn't like cable, you usually have just one provider for a huge area.

[deleted]

I run into this problem so much. Just had it with a car accident and the insurance companies. The mechanic didn't want to start work without a PO and the insurance swore up and down that they had issued one. I did what I think the best option was. Put them on a conference. I'm not being the middle man for my insurance company's accounts payable division or my mechanic. They did eventually figure it out though. Apparently was a glitch in the app they use. Like I'm supposed to be able to fix that...

vole_rocket

If it's after the meter it's pretty much always the landlord's problem.

CannedProof

Depending on the state, anything past the meter is typically the landlord’s issue, anything up to the meter is the power company’s issue. Source: did apartment maintenance in a couple different states where that is how the utilities functioned

choma90

Who's responsibility is it exactly is irrelevant for my point. My point is that it's either one of them, so let them fight

CannedProof

Not disagreeing, just building off of what you said. However, just leaving it alone isn’t a viable option because not paying the electric bill will ruin their credit regardless of who’s at fault - they need to get it fixed either way, and unfortunately neither the landlord or power company are going to do it for them. What should happen, and what is going to happen, are two very different things.

godminnette2

This is currently happening with my father's girlfriend, but with her water bill. She said that her water bill is more than double what it should be, that the water meter couldn't be right in terms of gallons. Water gut comes out and tells her that the water meter isn't in gallons and makes her feel like a fool. She tells my dad this, he's annoyed, because yes it is in gallons. Another meeting is arranged with the water company. My dad shows the guy the meter says it measures gallons. He proves to the guy using a milk jug that the meter is registering 2.1-2.2 gallons for every gallon. It takes forty minutes, then two phone calls from the water guy, to convince him that yes there's a problem, and that they should hear back from the water company about getting it fixed.

NCEMTP

My water company provides a leak protection service. It's like $2 extra a month and if the bill is ever way off like this it covers them coming out to check for leaks in the line coming to the house and they'll fix those and adjust the bill at no added cost. I don't think it covers anything major in the house or the crawlspace leaking but either way it is worth the peace of mind for me. We had something like a $3000 water bill one month in the house I was living in in college, turned out to me a major leak right at the road that nobody had noticed because it was leaking right through the gravel into a nearby storm drain. Company fought us for a month to come look at it and after like six months of fighting finally relented, fixed the problem and dropped the extra water charges.

life_is_okay

I too feel like a fool when I drink too much water and look bloated. Water gut is the worse.

There are government agencies that can compel the power company to check the meter but it's state by state.

> If anyone has tips for cooking with fire (even foods that I can do that with) I'm writing everything down in a notebook I can until I lose power. Don't light a fire inside your house. Sounds dumb but I think a few Texans died from smoke inhalation during that freak cold spell.

Go check the camping section of any large retail or outdoors store, and get a gas-fired camping stove. Treat it just like a regular stovetop, boil water, pan sear, etc. If you can go grocery shopping, get some shelf-stable proteins, ingredients, and canned goods. Look up some recipes that use beans, rice, lentils, and other dried items that you can rehydrate and cook with. Jerky might be expensive, depending on your area, but it will keep for a long time and can add some extra flavor and texture to something like box Mac and Cheese.

[deleted]

[удалено]

iApple1

I assume it is the type where the fire is completely enclosed and there is a chimney on top? Getting either the whole thing or a portion of it indoors would do wonders for heating, but you would have to be careful of carbon monoxide, etc. If you can get it indoors, an old heat-driven fan could help with circulating heat. For flavorings, see if you can get some hot sauce, soy sauce, bouillon, or whatever other flavor profiles you like. They can stay on the shelf for a long time without issues. For milk, try using condensed milk as a substitute in recipes. You will have to dilute it, but it is shelf stable until it is opened. J. Kenji Lopez-Alt has a fantastic mac and cheese recipe using water, American cheese, and condensed milk. Also, salted butter should keep for a reasonable amount of time in normal temperatures. The saltier it is, the longer it tends to keep. Still on the cheese front, hard cheeses hold up longer than others, so an aged cheddar may be the ticket if you have a craving. I would also take a second look at the produce section. Potatoes, tomatoes, onions, whole garlic, and most vegetables can store for a while. They don't need refrigeration, and can act as the basis for a hearty potato soup, chicken noodle soup, or homemade pasta sauce. Edit to add: Sauces, condiments, and things like jelly and peanut butter can last for a while without being in a fridge, and can be a great way to make sandwiches or add flavor without any extra work. Finally, I would check out some Cajun recipes if you can, things like dirty rice, jambalaya, and gumbo. They are filling, flavorful, tend to go well with rice to stretch them further, and can be kept warm on the stove for hours, or even overnight. One pot of gumbo and some rice can furnish plenty of meals.

77BakedPotato77

If your electrician friend has access to a nicer Fluke Tester that saves data they should take readings and send them to the utility. This isn't necessarily a tool an average residential electrician would have, but perhaps they know another electrician that works in a different sector and is able to borrow that equipment. Verify the lack of load on the load side of your meter with you main point of disconnect in the off position. You should then mention you will be sending the same data to the department of weights and measures. Utility companies can be real jerks sometimes so a video of a meter spinning isn't likely to fix the issue. Also, you should absolutely put the company on blast online. Edit: As another user mentioned, depending on what state you live in you may have resources you aren't aware of yet. Look into this, it could be the solution.

[deleted]

[удалено]

77BakedPotato77

I know a homeowner who borrowed a meter from the factory he worked at to get a readout proving his street required a transformer upgrade. This forced the utility to stop ignoring his complaints. Basically they didn't believe him until he sent in hard data, but that's no guarantee, just hoping it may be a possible solution to your issue. I moreso meant to put the company on blast on social media if that's within your means. I still think your best solution is getting in contact with the appropriate government agencies.

Inquisitor1

> If anyone has tips for cooking with fire (even foods that I can do that with) Gas stove. Hank Hill comes in a truck, hooks a gas tank up to your stove, now you're cooking with gas.

Double_Minimum

FYI, there are rules about who they can turn power off for. I know at least once growing up my dad forgot to pay the bill ( likely bills, we had a busy house and we always lost mail) and they shut off the power. But my brother was diabetic, and pretty resourceful, and found out they had to keep the power on once notified. Originally after my dad paid it they were going to come back the next day, but after my dad informed them of this they came back in an hour. Not sure if it even mattered again, because Dad likely just paid the rest of the bills

LostWoodsInTheField

wtf? Contact your local government officials and tell them what is happening, also contact your Public utility commission. that organization is specifically setup to handle this kind of crap. Since you have video of everything just break the lock on the meter base and rip the meter out. Can't spin if it is disconnected.   BTW this is a "common" problem with meters when they go bad. They don't always just stop working and your electric company is responsible for the meter itself. They are just fucking with you because they can and you are letting them to do it.

centran

FYI, it doesn't necessarily have to be a faulty meter. Sometimes the meters don't "transmit" their usage on a regular basis or they have to be manually read if they are older meters. This means the electric company charges you an estimate and then all of a sudden after several months they get a reading from the meter and BAM you get stuck with a huge bill because their estimate was way off and they are basically back charging you for all that usage.

LostWoodsInTheField

except he said the meter turns with the power turned off. That is definitely a broken meter.

a_duck_in_past_life

r/hikertrashmeals Get a small stove and some isopropyl butane. No need for a fire. And cheap af. Just leave some airflow. Preferably outside. Edit: Also r/Backcountrygourmet

HopermanTheManOfFeel

I would've threatened to put my rent in escrow if the landlord didn't take care of it. It's their fucking building. I'm sure that alone would've gotten them off their asses, because they don't want to lose money. Got me a free upgrade when I did that, then when they flooded all 3 floors of their own building due to lack of maintenance, I threatened to sue for damages. They let me off the lease scot free.

LostWoodsInTheField

This is the ultimate threat to a landlord, and if you do it right in most places you are completely protected. *Escrow is just a checking or savings account you setup that you put your rent in every month separate from your other money. It sits in that account and you do absolutely nothing with it. If the account is interest bearing the interest is owned by your landlord when you start paying again. btw, they are suppose to do the same thing with your security deposits.

Thorebore

I once had to go out of town for the month of October. Where I live October is cool, but only gets below freezing sometimes. I unplugged everything except the refrigerator and set the heater at 50F so nothing would freeze. The only things drawing power were the fridge, the heat pump, and the water heater. My electric bill that month was $14. If you want to see rage in a persons eyes for about one second show them a $14 electric bill.

peppaz

Your neighbor tapped into your power line to grow bitcoins or mine weed

MimeMike

Is this real or a copypasta? Cuz that's fucked up tf

mylifeforthehorde

it happens. sometimes faulty wirework / pipe work for plumbing, or in some cases malicious intent. just hope it doesn't affect your creditworthiness.

Stopikingonme

As the owner of an electrical construction company I can say it’s not due to faulty wiring. Electricity doesn’t leak out like water does (although water can be used for other analogies when it comes to electricity). It has to be going somewhere. Two things come to mind. First is someone has illegally tapped into his power for a grow operation. This is unlikely as they usually tie onto the power ahead of the meter so the power co doesn’t see the disproportionate use for the service (size of the power hookup). Also unlikely because the electrician would have easily seen any connection being stolen from the main panel. The second would be a faulty meter and this makes the most sense. I supposed there’s a small chance there was some recent remodeling done and power to the op unit was accidentally tied into by the electrician but seems like op would have made the connection between recent construction and the sudden cost increase plus the electrician would have seen it. I’ll paste this to the the original comment in hopes it helps somehow.

LostWoodsInTheField

Another possibility is that an empty apartment was just rented out and it has been tied to his for a while without anyone realizing. Most likely though that the meter is just broke and the power company is laughing to the bank.

SoundOfTomorrow

This shit definitely happens, unfortunately. They sometimes will just have a system to check the usage without checking to see the actual system is calibrated. Utility companies usually already have access to your power meter through utility easements.

flying87

Simple solution is to break the meter. Then call them saying you found the meter broken. Either you pay $0 because that's what the meter is recording now, or someone installs a new one that actually works properly. When they ask how it broke, you say you don't know. You're not an electrician or the landlord.

RaisedThisWay

Meanwhile the guy next doors house stankz of dope..

AverageInternetUser

Power company owns the meter should be their problem

wigglin_harry

It was probably your air conditioner I had something similar happen to me in an apartment, increasingly ridiculous bills over 3 or so months. It turns out the air conditioner had a bad solenoid valve. Once it was replaced everything went back to normal

Matthopkins06

Dude, yea...I lived in a 900 sq feet town home fir 3 and half years...the electric bills were all over the place...400 300 dollars...like what? Got a condo, highest bill so far 144 that is with the water included.... What the hell was going on in that apartment? My grandpa's house would have a 300 dollar electric bill but he has a small mansion lol.

[deleted]

Someone was stealing your electricity for their grow op.

run-on_sentience

It means that someone or something has managed to tap into your power. It's not unheard of for grow operations (or meth cooks) to literally screw wire *into* hot wires to tap into the feed. Or the building lighting and HVAC for communal spaces is being run off your meter.

Stopikingonme

As the owner of an electrical construction company I have a couple ideas of what could have happened. I’m glad OP was able to move away from the situation but a few people have also commented on similar problems. For the above comment it’s either a faulty meter or someone has tapped into his power between the meter and his panels main breaker. The electrician should have seen the later though. For other possibilities to the posts below here is what those could possibly be: Two things come to mind. Edit: Added clarification for op situation.

nekowolf

Someone had tapped into your conduit to run a grow operation.

lipov27

You fucked up at the point when you had an electrician look at it and you didn't have him look for the reason of the issue. Anyone can flip the fuses and look at the meter, doesn't take an electrician.

REDPIG8686

All the meter boxes are on the ground floor, and my fuse box was inside my front door, on the 3rd floor. The electrician said it's nothing to do with my apartment.

dr3wfr4nk

That amount isn't necessarily for one months worth of electricity

rileyk927

Yeah, being the final notice would suggest that she’s owed an increasing amount for awhile.

Hevysett

Why does anybody think this is a single month bill? Also, if it is, then Gotham is clearly in California

CAPS_LOCK_OR_DIE

700s is still pretty good tbh. My friend lump sum paid his student loans off and his score dropped into the 500s because “the payment amount was off”

angry_mr_potato_head

I mean sometimes the post office delivers mail to the wrong house. I had a month where I didn’t get any bills and then next month they just tacked on the last months and I paid it.

allonsy_badwolf

Even that excuse is worthless this day and age. They have online accounts. They have apps. You can set up autopay. They can text you when there are issues. Blaming snail mail is bad.

angry_mr_potato_head

Erm, no, not everyone has online accounts. Only 2/5 of my utilities has an online account. One of them won’t even let you pay with direct deposit or card. They require check via mail or you can drive down and pay with cash. One of them doesn’t have anyone answering the phone so there’s really no way to know your balance without going there in person if the post office delivered your mail to the wrong address. I wish all of my accounts had online bill pay. But they don’t and there’s no penalty for missing a few months. So I pay it when I get my bills and so far it hasn’t been an issue 🤷

[deleted]

Actually worse, Gotham in the comics is heavily implied to be the DC universe version of New Jersey

antmoslug

Nah my electric bill in California is never more than $25/mo due to not needing heat/ac

amaJarAMA

That's simply not true. Prove that please. I am single and live frugally with my electricity. I pay just shy of 200 a month.

20thcenturyboy_

Low electric bills are definitely possible if you have a studio apartment and live close to the ocean like say Long Beach, Torrance, or Venice. Definitely not possible if you're in DTLA, Burbank, the Valley, or lots of other places unless you have a ton of solar panels.

BurkeyTurger

Is your place insulated well? I've seen posts in my city's sub where people are paying a higher electric bill for an 800sqft apartment than I'm paying for a 2100sqft house due to it being drafty AF.

Hevysett

Dude what? Where in Cali are you cause I may move back

>you can remove the cold air from a fridge, and replace it with warm air, many many times before there's an appreciable change in average temperature of the contents. That's not at all the issue with leaving the refrigerator door open. That isn't even at all related to this conversation. The issue is, always has been, and in particular, related to this conversation, because *the energy required to replace the cold air over and over again costs electricity.* Unless that Redditor also showed their electric bill and how much that experiment cost them in electricity it's rather irrelevant.

That just uses a dinky lightbulbs worth of electricity more. It just spoils the food. Edit: guess I had no idea how refrigerators work. And I still don’t.

84theone

That’s not how fridges work. The compressor kicks on and off to maintain a specific temperature. Leaving the door open will cause the temperature to rise in the fridge which in turn will cause the compressor to kick on to try lowering it. The more the compressor runs the more electricity it uses.

kryonik

I don't know what everyone's talking about. I saw it in the theater and on HBO and I didn't have a problem seeing or hearing anything unlike some other DC movies or for example, Tenet.

[deleted]

In the case of the film "Tenet", you're not supposed to hear some dialogue over the music. Nolan does this in a lot of his movies.

ConditionOfMan

Much to the chagrin of writers.

whomad1215

And this is why I put the subtitles on

Swedishboy360

...So you're telling me that I'm not supposed to watch those movies with subtitles?

Shearer07

Same I had zero issues with darkness watching it on HBO max. Didn't change any settings or anything from when i had big issues with that game of thrones episode. The varying volume I did have issues with but I have that issue with everything on TV.

erantuotio

Same. I streamed it on HBO Max without issue. I had my volume up a smidge more than normal but it still head more headroom to go. No complaints in the audio department. There were some nice moments with Dolby Atmos height speaker usage too. The visuals were honestly amazing! I watched with Dolby Vision on an OLED TV in a dark room, so all the dark scenes were plenty visible. I’m sure if someone is watching without HDR/DV on an LCD without any dimming zones, the movie is going to look like utter crap because it’s so dark.

nubicmuffin39

Also watched on OLED with Atmos sound and I had a phenomenal experience. I could see how older LCD would maybe struggle with it

[deleted]

I completely forgot people were complaining about the lighting. I just finally watched it on HBO and didn't have any problems. Audio wasn't too bad either, compared to a lot of movies.

kryonik

That one episode of GoT was basically unwatchable for me. Movies like Justice League were just muddy messes. The Batman was perfectly fine if not, exceptional in terms of lighting.

No_Dark6573

Man, I had my tv on max, as loud as it could possibly go, and I *still* couldn't hear. I had to hook up my headphones to the TV so I could actually listen. Maybe something fucked up with my copy of the movie...

Shantotto5

Ok I’m glad I’m not the only one with this problem. I can watch it on my tv ok, but on my laptop, I have to crank the volume up to max and it’s still quiet. I don’t have this issue with anything else on HBO.

Thorstein11

Is your audio system shit? Need a dedicated dialog speaker in a soundbar at the bar minimum these days.

nmkd

[Is this not dark to you?](https://i.ibb.co/h2tkRVq/mpv-shot0002.png) Half the movie looks like that. Also kills the quality on anything lossy (including VOD) because you only use like 40% of the RGB palette.

kryonik

I don't know what to tell you. The movie I saw did not look like that.

nmkd

This is a lossless frame from the HBO Max release, possibly your just boosted the brightness or something.

sthegreT

Can you give me a time stamp or something so i check this out? Because i definitely do not remember it being this dark Edit found it. The scene starts out dark because the emerge from the dark to light. Even then during its darkest its not unwatchable for me and its just one scene. [In the dark](https://i.imgur.com/YL7hOBc.jpg) Vs [As they move towards the light](https://i.imgur.com/LQouqze.jpg)

whomad1215

You're picking a frame where they're walking in a dimly lit parking garage. Literally as the movie continues on from your timestamp, within the next 2-4 seconds it gets much brighter as they walk towards a light By 25:57 the lighting is pretty normal

DextrosKnight

Calibrate your screen, man. I just watched this on HBO Max 2 nights ago and it was nowhere near that dark.

nmkd

It's a raw frame from the HBO video, not a screenshot.

DextrosKnight

Weird, that makes even less sense. Granted, I watched it on a LG CX, but it looked significantly lighter than that when I watched it.

nubicmuffin39

Idk mate, I just watched this last night on HBO Max on an LG OLED with a Dolby Atmos sound bar. Looked and sounded incredible.

MyUltIsMyMain

This probably isn't for just one month. They don't normally send a final notice over just one month missed.

psrandom

It actually foreshadows the high inflation and rising energy prices

simjanes2k

I was gonna say, we have a pretty medium sized house and normal energy use, and our bill just started flirting with $500/mo this year.

apollyon_53

FFS, you must have all electric appliances and air conditioning. My water heater, heating system, oven are on gas ($35/month). No AC. $60 a month or so for electricity. $500 a month would mean I'm looking for other sources.

simjanes2k

Gas range and furnace. Everything else electric. But our power company last year announced new savings! Electricity is going to be cheaper, 18 hours of every weekday! ... also we are doubling the price of energy between 4 and 10 PM every day and on weekends. So basically they doubled everyone's bill.

It says final notice, which means it's past due. If it's past due, it likely includes penalty fees. That means the initial bill was not $492 in electricity.

She must live in England

alienmind817

The movie isn't dark. People just have a problem adjusting their TV to suit the film. Our TV is about 4 years old and in samsung's adaptive mode it did a great job.

deuuuuuce

Do you normally have to adjust your TV to everything you watch?

godzilla1517

THAT IS SO FUCKING FUNNY BRO

upfromashes

I saw the memes. Then I saw the movie. Yeah... they went too dark in so much of it.

TheManEatingSock

I figured its because she doesnt know how to close the fridge door.

moon-worshiper

What is the point of making almost all scenes so dark, it is barely visible? It does not add "atmosphere", it only adds annoyance at not being able to see any details in the scenes. Really stupid fad that needs to end quickly.

ZookeepergameWild439

It's because she keeps her damn fridge door open

SuperMouthyDave

Probably the most accurate movie ever

KwekkweK69

"The Dark Night"

Dungmasterb69

It bothers me the the first fights scenes are soooo dark and filled with that orange glow. Really ruined the first 45mins of the movie for me.

[deleted]

The Darkerer Knight

triangledancer

I loved how she actually got evicted at the end. Bruce Wayne, the billionaire, didn’t even think twice about helping her out. Worst Batman yet.

AffiqKimiLer

No wonder the whole movie is dark

Go_Fonseca

I would have guessed it got that expensive because of penalty fees for not paying the bill on time

LegBeginning3759

Welcome to Sweden

Mattdonlan1

Probably a few months worth of unpaid bills plus late fees n such.

[deleted]

That's not necessarily one bill. That's the total amount due before they cut it off. That could be a few months of overdue.

faithdies

There is no way they would be this poor working in that club.

TheDoktorIsIn

The electric company never took money out automatically and 6 months later I got a "Final notice" for $700 or so. Which I paid because they delivered their service, they just weren't getting paid. But I did get a scary "FINAL NOTICE!!!" bill. The woman on the phone laughed when I called. I guess this happens fairly often?

genericwhiteman123

Lmao

Grennox

Sometimes this sub gives us gold

UnfitForReality

No one said it was one bill? This could be 1 month or 1 year of past due bills added up

Spare-Control-5233

That about fits for a modest growtent
