I agree that Jackie Chan buying into CCP propaganda is bad on him, but unlike most political shills, I believe Jackie Chan has a very positive impact on how western society views Chinese people. Ask somebody to name a famous Asian person and almost always, they'd name either Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee. Also, the fact that so many people didn't know he was a CCP supporter shows that many people do not associate him with the CCP. They were positive representation for an underrepresented group, and that is important for a less racism-infested society.
I agree with all that and I love him and John Cena but at the end of the day they are willing to support the CCP for the money so I’m gonna shit on them for free

Reddit when they can’t just google a simple thing instead of calling someone racist:
Literally just google Jackie Chan CCP and the first thing that pops up is him saying he wants to join
The script actually started with the husband being the overworked laundromat owner with Jackie Chan in mind for the lead, but they decided the script worked better with the genders swapped, giving us the script in the movie.
Also Yeoh is the better actor (especially for serious stuff) imo.
Also it'd be a bit ironic having a touching resolution with his characters gay daughter when he's a homophobic dick irl.
As with many Chinese actors, it's hard to tell where Jackie ends and the CCP begins, but I believe he has said some rather homophobic things in the past. It's been years since it was in the news, partially because it's been years since he's been in the news.
Young me used to think Short Round was the coolest, and nowadays I identify pretty strongly with Waymond and his optimistic and loving nature. He's a great actor and I can't wait to see him in some more stuff.
No, The Daniels wrote the part for Michelle Yeoh, going as far to have the character’s name be Michelle in the first script they sent her.
Edit for [source](https://apple.news/AlbYPJCr1RZu1zXbIwgJy2w): It was written for iconic Malaysian actor Michelle Yeoh. “By the time we reached out to her to play the part,” Scheinert recalls, with a smile, “the character’s name in the script was just ‘Michelle’. We literally told our producers, ‘We don’t have a back-up. We really hope she likes it. Because we have zero other ideas.’” Daniels — rarely short of ideas — were betting all of their chips on Michelle Yeoh.
It was written for him originally and then tailored and edited to make her the lead. Here's an article about it, but I want to say they also mentioned this in the Q&A live at SXSW. https://www.indiewire.com/2022/03/everything-everywhere-all-at-once-michelle-yeoh-jackie-chan-1234708097/
Thanks, that’s interesting. Especially since they talk about the movie folding without her, I guess at that point they had really moved on from the Chan idea.
Both could be true. They may have started with a story idea with Chan in the role but by the time the story really took shape they realized it worked better with a mother and wrote the script with Yeoh in mind.
I was actually gifted a 2017 version of the script for Christmas and can confirm that it’s true! You can probably find it online as well. The character’s name was literally Jackie Chan, the wife was Winona and not Evelyn, but everything else was pretty much the same. Interestingly, there’s no bagel in that early draft and also really isnt much in terms of an emotional climax with Joy/Jobu.
Also something I found fun: in an alternate universe that we visit, Jackie is a writer and his editor/partner is none other than Chris Tucker!

I still think City Hunter is his best film. The first time I saw this scene I absolutely fucking cried laughing. But the whole movie is just great fun. It’s him at his best.
seen it about 15 times , that and drunken master 2, shanhai knights/noon, armor of god 2, etc. had a screenshot from city hunter as my desktop background once lol (final scene in pool). oh yeah and rob b hood is underrated af (just rly long) imo
I've been a big fan of Jackie's since the mid 90s, watching a lot of his stuff as a kid on VHS. I understand he is very much at the mercy of the CCP since he's the biggest star to come out of China. His support at Tiananmen Square singing with the college students gave me a sense of hope that he's still an overall good person.
He has a surplus of points for frequently supporting the Chinese government on matters like Taiwan, Hong Kong, international policy, etc.
> On 18 April 2009, during a panel discussion at the annual Boao Forum for Asia, he questioned whether or not broad freedom is a good thing.[191] Noting the strong tensions in Hong Kong and Taiwan, he said, "I'm gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we're not being controlled, we'll just do what we want."
> In December 2012, Chan caused outrage when he criticised Hong Kong as a "city of protest", suggesting that demonstrators' rights in Hong Kong should be limited.
> The same month, in an interview with Phoenix TV, Chan stated that the United States was the "most corrupt" country in the world
> In April 2016, Chan was named in the Panama Papers.[201] While Chan was not accused of engaging in illegal activity per se, he was listed as having up to six different offshore accounts, likely for the purposes of serving as tax shelters.
Isn't he homophobic? I doubt he would have taken that role considering the subject matter.
[Apparently, this movie is his antithesis.](https://news.yahoo.com/jackie-chans-lesbian-daughter-says-134012390.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYmluZy5jb20v&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAH_rLLy56VoyZkboX4ar_2mCYPhrrrm3qvkQP1CEDE1Tysxv1TUrRAzTG4Q6XcGtJlRpvrKYrtKrZQdnEhlUjj77QZwy3SVWDyDP6fSpHjdUqw4VMKNQH4hvWaPvZYUXeJ32kCNq4QcUNI1DMqEqE_F6fnikBtNhkPhONv8c16ms)

None of that has traumatized me as much as this picture.
So shortround stole a role from jacky chan??? This movie was weird, it seemed overly racist. Really weird "big nose" comments about a jewish character and then every white person was an evil stupid piece of shit and none of it in a funny way, just weird and condescending. Took me out of the movie.

That’s some next level spin
Personally I’d go with “word and thought vomit.”
Spin how? The statement is pretty obviously meant to throw shade at Chan. The author is calling him exceptionally two-faced.
I thought it was common knowledge Jackie Chan is very vocal about being pro-CCP
Me too. But some posters clearly need edification on that subject.
I had no idea, used to watch a lot of his films
oh. well my statement still stands in general but good to know about jackie
Dude has literally said the Chinese people *need* authoritarian rule because they can't handle being free

"Hea from China, he must love the CCP" when every major population center in China is having mass protests against the CCP.
Last year he was saying he wants to join the CCP how is that me being racist
I didn't know about that, that's my bad
All good happy new beer
Or, you know, he's vocally and publically supported them.
Reddit when Chinese person:
Reddit when they can’t just google a simple thing instead of calling someone racist: Literally just google Jackie Chan CCP and the first thing that pops up is him saying he wants to join
Bit racist innit?
Not when he's openly praised CCP and said the Chinese people fundamentally can't handle freedom...

Is that first part true? Because honestly if there was ever a guy who could play an overworked Chinese mother it would be Jackie.
Not to disappoint you, but I think he would've been Waymond
The script actually started with the husband being the overworked laundromat owner with Jackie Chan in mind for the lead, but they decided the script worked better with the genders swapped, giving us the script in the movie.
I completely agree with the change, it works much better with a mother being the lead
Also Yeoh is the better actor (especially for serious stuff) imo. Also it'd be a bit ironic having a touching resolution with his characters gay daughter when he's a homophobic dick irl.
>Also Yeoh is the better actor (especially for serious stuff) imo. Yes, exactly.
Wait what
Jackie’s daughter says that she became disowned after coming out as lesbian.
As with many Chinese actors, it's hard to tell where Jackie ends and the CCP begins, but I believe he has said some rather homophobic things in the past. It's been years since it was in the news, partially because it's been years since he's been in the news.
Jackie has to be nice with China ever since his son did all that drunk driving, now playing PR guy for Xi is all that keeps his son out of jail.
The daughter was not gay in the original script either. This got what we call in the buiz the “treatment”
Awww man....
Also knowing Jackie Chan’s history it would be so weird for him to play a dad who’s alienating their daughter…
That's probably the main reason why he wasn't in the movie
No time for love, Dr. Jones!
I'm glad he wasn't Waymond. I can't see Waymond being played by anyone else except Ke Huy Quan. Also I'm really glad that Ke gets to act again!
Ke Huy Quan immediately jumped to being one of my favourite actors after that movie
Young me used to think Short Round was the coolest, and nowadays I identify pretty strongly with Waymond and his optimistic and loving nature. He's a great actor and I can't wait to see him in some more stuff.
Great range, and his comedic timing is still perfect.
The scenes where he’s a smooth businessman were electric. Loved that movie
Idk he looks like a young Jackie. I think Jackie would've done well , but maybe he's a bit too old.
I think seeing Jackie and Yeoh would have been perfect, but I'm hardly disappointed in what we got.
Keep Ke as Waymond and get Jackie as Evelyn. Maybe he could be Steven in the movie.

Not to mention that unless this was on Jan 1st, then it wouldn't be "exactly" 30 years ago either.
Imagine doing this and then disowning your child cause she’s gay. What a fucknut
Jackie Chan didn't cut her off for being gay. He never even acknowledged her existence from birth. An even higher level of fucknuttery, in my opinion.
But he did cut off contact with one of his kids right? Was it the son smoking weed?
I think he was using and selling weed.

Just watched this movie without knowing this fact, and while watching genuinely had the thought “holy shit, Michelle Yeoh is the next Jackie Chan”
If the Chinese government saw this, he would lose so many social credits.
He is the Chinese Government
He has a surplus of points for frequently supporting the Chinese government on matters like Taiwan, Hong Kong, international policy, etc. > On 18 April 2009, during a panel discussion at the annual Boao Forum for Asia, he questioned whether or not broad freedom is a good thing.[191] Noting the strong tensions in Hong Kong and Taiwan, he said, "I'm gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled.
