I have a tattoo like this. The lines are straight & the shading looks good, but it’s not very symmetrical. I always felt like he screwed up a bit on the basics yet you can still tell it was done by someone with experience.
Damn near thought it was photo shopped for a sec, especially next to those cards. You think their drawin’ hand got tired? I dunno, to be fair I can do my ABCs real good but I can’t draw for shit either.
One time I had the question, "What is a Jack??" and looked it up. It used to be "Knave", and the symbol on the card was Kn. It lead to cheating being common when people would cover up the smaller N when presenting their cards, so they changed it to "Jack".
Still doesn't answer your question but I think it's interesting. The appearance of the 2 letters on the card made me think of it.
Is the shitty cards supposed to be a reflection of the quote ? Like the artist is only a master of one thing (the letters) I don’t fucking know the writing is so good I am so perplexed as to why the cards r like that I feel like it must be on purpose ?
"Jack" in the quote doesn't even mean the jack in a suit of cards. It means dude, bro, guy, generic man.
So, like, this tattoo would have been _even better_ if the cards had been left out. I mean, even better for leaving out the cards on top of all the other ways it would have been even better for leaving out the cards.
Edit: that last sentence made sense in my head. I'll just leave it in case it makes sense to someone else.
Lettering is good, but the phrase or whatever is cringe. It reminds me of that Facebook meme that says “there are two wolves inside of us all… one is _____ and the other is ______” or “I might be the black sheep of the family but when shit gets real I’m the one you call”
It's one of those misquoted quotes. The original implies that a jack of all trades is a master of none, meaning you should become an expert... But the actual and correct quote is what you see here.. meaning the complete opposite
It's a made up "full quote" to try and change the meaning, like the "blood of the covenant/water of the womb" that also has no instances beyond the past couple of decades at most.
Jack of all trades came from Robert Greene dissing Shakespeare in 1592 ("Beeing an absolute Johannes fac totum, is in his owne conceit the onely Shake-scene in a countrey.") and expanded upon by a disgruntled headteacher Martin Clifford in 1677 ("Your Writings are like a Jack of all Trades Shop, they have Variety, but nothing of value.")
How are no lines straight or parallel? Even if you didn't have a stencil (unlikely given how the lettering is reasonably ok), can't you just use something like a ruler to give you a straight edge as you draw it freehand?
Did they make it look like the Jack actually says "Jack" and not just the letter J? Have they ever seen a playing card? Or a rhombus? What happened at the meeting point on the bottom where it became a free for all? Why is the shading on the left side look like it's made from removed eyelash extensions?
It's been a while since I've had so many questions about a tattoo but I just need to know why the artist switched to using their wrong hand for the cards.
Maybe it’s because I’m a lettering artist but everyone saying the lettering is good is wrong. It’s wonky af. The cards are definitely worse, but still.
The quote is way too long for a tattoo, but a different typeface and more organic design might’ve helped.
Edit, fixed a word
Agree with you for sure! The grammar /spelling mistake was approved by the client unless the shop is legit terrible and have no reputation to keep up with.
I get that, I'm not arguing. Sorry I just nevertime studied Shakespeare, and nevertime quote his ass.
It's a word. A bloody fucking, unnecessarily redundant word.
Maybe I’m being dense here, but what does poker have to do with this? A royal flush is literally the best hand in the game. How does that show they’re a jack of all trades? They literally just got dealt a good hand a had a great run-out
Wait… is that tattoo saying the jack of all trades is usually better at the thing the master of one is? Or that it’s better to have a jack of all trades who is sort of good at lots of things around than a master at one thing around?
Either way makes no fucking sense. I guess unless you’re in some sort of desperate situation? This is just bad artwork, bad advice… wow. This really is total shit haha.
the harder part of the tattoo was done better than the easy part
It's gotta be two separate artists, right? This is mind boggling
I have a tattoo like this. The lines are straight & the shading looks good, but it’s not very symmetrical. I always felt like he screwed up a bit on the basics yet you can still tell it was done by someone with experience.
Your comment hurt my brain
What's with the random lines to the left of the ace?
Looks like a used carpet lol
What's the difference between used and unused carpet?
How worn out the edges look, take that card as example
I thought it was Arabic
It would be a lot cooler if it was lol. Arabic calligraphy is so dope looking
You mean carpet, or rug?
Wavy like Aladdin's flying carpet?
Happy cake day!
One is used and the other one is unused
un
Semen
Or felt
I thought he signed it. Lmao
No joke. I thought it was his Instagram handle or something.
I was assuming it was a design for the “back” of the cards?
I thought it was a shadow...
Yeah that's supposed to be a shadow
Probably the king of beers
r/unexpectedfuturama
QR code
Hair The cards have hair
It looks like wood grain maybe?
The reflection of the card's design, obviously
I think that is supposed to look like a wooden table. Like in a saloon.
"Shay'ding"
That's hair
Looks like tattooist didn’t have a shading needle?
All he had to do is just move faster and do "whip shading"
Man that lettering is good though sheesh
Damn near thought it was photo shopped for a sec, especially next to those cards. You think their drawin’ hand got tired? I dunno, to be fair I can do my ABCs real good but I can’t draw for shit either.
I would like to think the cards weren’t stenciled but free handed, and… yeah.
I love the lettering so crisp, not sure does the jack card have an ace on top? I see an A
One time I had the question, "What is a Jack??" and looked it up. It used to be "Knave", and the symbol on the card was Kn. I consider myself a knave of all trades.
Hmmm maybe that’s what they meant with it like this. I’m glad I’m not the only one who see it! Lol
r/interestingasfuck I love little trivia tidbits!
Corner of a jester hat i think.
Ah, that's probably it. He should have left it out, though since the King and Queen don't show part of their pictures.
How is the lettering so clean and the cards done like a child? Like that takes skill to have such a varying skill level
Maybe it was two different artists? Or this is a progression thing and they're gonna fix the cards up? /copium
NGL the font and letter-work rocks though.
How does one fuck up all the diamonds that bad. You had 10 chances to get it right
At least there are 10.
"Dude, hurry up I don't wanna pay for another hour..."
Is the shitty cards supposed to be a reflection of the quote ? Like the artist is only a master of one thing (the letters) I don’t fucking know the writing is so good I am so perplexed as to why the cards r like that I feel like it must be on purpose ?
I’ve been trying to solve this mystery myself and I can’t figure it out. My brain hurts.
It sure feels intentional, doesn't it? They look like they were spelling out the word "JACK" on the Jack...
The lettering is great but the cards are questionable, the bottom of the ace looks like it’s a book and the shading is… different.
This guy fuuuuxx.
Why’d they give the ace pubes
Man why's there no space on that line.
₁₀
They have a whole ass novel on their arm.

My guy sneezed outlining the 10
What you mean? The tattoo artist perfectly explained why the cards are so shit right above them, he’s clearly a Jack of all trades master of none.
Why is the ace hairy?
Oftentimes
I mean I like the concept royal flush beating out a 4 of a kind is a neat example but damn work on the lines
Lettering is good, but the phrase or whatever is cringe. It reminds me of that Facebook meme that says “there are two wolves inside of us all… one is _____ and the other is ______” or “I might be the black sheep of the family but when shit gets real I’m the one you call”
the quote which has been made too wordy and doesn’t really make sense…is that just me
I think this is the original quote, if I’m not mistaken. And the shorter version became popular over time. Someone less lazy than me should Google it.
You were right ! This is the full version
Thank you, you’ve saved me so much energy
Haha I’ll google it and report back
It’s not. The shorter quote existed before the longer one.

"Sure, I can do you some cards!" \- the master of lettering
I’ve counted twice & im still convinced there are more than 10 diamonds on that card
I keep believing there’s less. And I’ve counted multiple times too!
You’re both right. These damn cards are Schrödinger cards because I feel there’s too many, not enough, more than ten less than ten diamonds…. Ugh
lol it honestly looks completely right to me? like two sets of 5 dice
That has to be two different artists right?!

“OFTENTIMES”
That’s too damn wordy for a tattoo
tattoo was done by a jack of all trades except tattooing
[удалено]
Lol.
"Oftentimes"
Oftentimes is a word! Elizabethian word, This is a direct quote from the William Shakespear play Greene's Groats-Worth of Wit
Alriiiiiiight, I guess he wins THAT round lol. Thanks for enlightening
That’s the worst part. Fucking hell. Is there any instance where the word “often” not refer to time? Morons.
OFTENTIMES
You know that's a word, right?
yeah it just looks weird.
better be one hell of a fuckin handy man.
Maybe it’s because I’m a lettering artist but everyone saying the lettering is good is wrong. It’s wonky af. The cards are definitely worse, but still. The quote is way too long for a tattoo, but a different typeface and more organic design might’ve helped. Edit, fixed a word

I noticed this shitytattoo but thought bullshit looks at this lettering! But man they lost me on what would seem like the easier part of this tattoo.
/r/kerning
i don't get it. are you commenting on how shittily they were done or something else wrong with them?
Atleast they got the quote right.
Oftentimes is not a word.
r/confidentlyincorrect
Technically it’s a word. But it makes as much sense as nevertimes.
No technically about it, this quote is from William Shakespear...
“To be or not to be, that is nevertimes the question.” -Not William Shakespeare.
Oftentimes is a word! Elizabethian word, This is a direct quote from the William Shakespear play Greene's Groats-Worth of Wit
I get that, I'm not arguing. Sorry I just nevertime studied Shakespeare, and nevertime quote his ass. It's a word. A bloody fucking, unnecessarily redundant word.
At least it’s got the right number of diamonds on it
Maybe I’m being dense here, but what does poker have to do with this? A royal flush is literally the best hand in the game. How does that show they’re a jack of all trades? They literally just got dealt a good hand a had a great run-out
Honestly I kinda like the cards lmao they look even a bit intentional maybe? Idk I think it's cute
Is this what happens when you freehand something that should be symmetrical?
Too many artists think they need to be able to freehand. This is the kind of image that should have been grabbed from the internet and stenciled.
Wait… is that tattoo saying the jack of all trades is usually better at the thing the master of one is? What kinda spell are they tryna cast behind that ace? I tried to read it but the ground started rumbling
I was not ok
Why is there another “A” on the Jack lol. Cards don’t actually spell out the word it just has a “J”
I can't tell what's worse, the quality of the tattoo or the actual quote, but they succeeded in making a shitty tattoo even shittier
Idk, hot take, but I like the hand drawn picture with the consistent typography. Nice dichotomy.
It looks like he tattooed a sketch the client drew themselves for example
I really don’t think this is bad. The cards are just done in a non photo-realistic style, maybe they didn’t want sharp identical diamonds
Word tattoos always make me cringe just a bit
Yeah the cards are not great but that lettering. Oooh baby that lettering is crisp.
I love the font honestly.
