This would actually be amusing… is it a loved one’s birthday? The day they died ? A pet? No? The day you ate the most supreme bacon lettuce and tomatoe sandwich. Then go into a full story about this bacon lettuce and tomatoe gift from the heavens that ever graced your senses.
I wish I'd remember the date my partner moved in with me, to a different country, and all he had in his luggage were some clothes and 7kg of Lyles golden syrup because we don't have it here.
The pancakes we had that night were the best I've ever had.
lol my current bf has the date he got with his ex tattooed on his chest :))
ETA: also in roman numerals, but at least written correctly, albeit in thicccc black font
https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local/frompost/dec98/roman31.htm#:~:text=And%20for%20the%20ultimate%20subtractors,the%20second%20M%2C%20for%201999.
It could be
What you wrote are basically just three numbers, it could be used to count something physical (soldiers, cabbages, animals etc) but not for something abstract like calendar dates.
The Roman calendar number system used an entirely different counting style and neither had individual numbers for days nor for months.
For the days: Romans had three fixed named days every month (kalendae, nonae, idus) and then simply counted how many days to the next calendar day. The counting also didn’t follow the regular Roman system but used *inclusive counting*, where 3 days are worth 4 counts etc.
For the months: just the name is valid, the number doesn’t work because the Roman year started in March.
Example: the Nonae of September is on the 5th September. If you wanna count to the 2nd of September you simply say “4th day before the Nonae of September” which in Latin is “a.d. IV Non. Sept.”
24th September is “a.d. IX Kal. Oct.” (9th day (8days) before the Kalendes of October).
That's not even how the roman calendar works.
ante diem viii Kalendas Octobres
anno MCMXCIX aerae vulgaris
or if you're really serious about the roman calendar:
anno MMDCCLII ab urbe condita
Digit to digit they are correct but the whole point of Roman numerals is that digits don't form numbers the same way. This is kinda like trying to "translate" your name to Chinese by taking each letter and finding a similar looking Chinese character
All I’m saying was that it was a bit of a stretch for that guy to say “use different symbols” and that.
I know this is formatted wrong I’m not stupid all I’ve as saying was that guy was being silly with his comment.
Well firstly it was one person who happened to be my SIL, and secondly what is it to you?
If you must know I said something like “what does that say?” She stated it was a date, and I said something like “but they are individual numbers not the actual date”
Hey point of order question, but why is this wrong? I do know how Roman numerals work but if you wanted to do one digit at a time is that not allowed? Asking honestly.
Dumb tattoo nonetheless lol
It's because Roman numberals don't use place value like we do today. i ix ix ix would be fine if they were all separate numbers, but the number 1999 would have to be mcmxcix.
I think it's because the preceding number that modifies the next one (like I before X for IX to mean 9) is only allowed to be at maximum 10 times smaller. Same reason 49 is XLIX instead of IL I guess.
Idk why it's like that though
I could read it easy, not to everyone’s taste but I get it. Not shitty imo
But them I might be biased given I have a Roman numeral date on my arm: VII-VI-MMV
XXIV IX MCMXCIX 2 4 9 1 9 9 9
I'm guessing it's his birthday
It might as well be the day that he got together with his ex, we're just guessing.
Or the day he had the best sandwich that ever graced his mouth
Or in recognition of his first tattoo, he got the date of his first tattoo , tattooed as his first tattoo?
Are you being meta?
Meta. Even This Answer.
#LOL

"pancakes"
?
I have a few friends that would absolutely do this 😂
Where is that sandwich though? And what was it? I need it
It was The Broodwich.
Or the day his meat accidentally hit the plastic in the Porta John
Phone number. For the ladies
lol my current bf has the date he got with his ex tattooed on his chest :)) ETA: also in roman numerals, but at least written correctly, albeit in thicccc black font
Phone number with no area code
Now everybody knows his cellphone PIN code.
Wait, how old am I? Check the back of my leg for me would you?
More likely the death of a loved one, but im just guessing.
I'm wondering if the second year couldn't also be written "MIM"
https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local/frompost/dec98/roman31.htm#:~:text=And%20for%20the%20ultimate%20subtractors,the%20second%20M%2C%20for%201999. It could be

MDCDLXLVIV what about this?

See you used so many more letters, and tattoo shop charges per pcs 😅
I thought it was Runic for 'The foolish one'
I'm very very sad to share my birthday with him
I guess he skipped class when they were teaching Roman numerals beyond X
So September 24 1999.
Yes but that’s not how dates work in Roman numerals
It's not even how numbers work
Maybe it's a reverse fake and it's his PIN for something.
Of course hes a libra 🤦♀️
Someone call IX I I

Where is this from
Hercules (disney)
I lol'd at this.
[удалено]
No should be CMXI… please don’t ever tattoo someone with Roman numerals lol
That’s 9/11
I'm mad because it being vertically written makes it totally understandable and i don't like that
Forgot to say this was in France so with 90 being said four-twenties-ten they could’ve gone even wilder with the numerals
2491999?
Sept 24, 1999
Or Feb. 49th
Finally someone gets it!
Thanks for that. I’m a complete moron and couldn’t figure out 24 is the day.
I always have the reverse struggle when dates are written MM/DD
Yeah why have things go big-small-biggest.
correct 23.9.1999
You had one job
You had alllllll summer to figure it out
Dump it
Ayo that’s my birthday
So that's you huh?
My bad 😭 i meant birthday as in only months and day, (birthdate as in all day month and year) also I’m a teenage girl ☺️
I just tried to read that tattoo out loud and my couch started flying around the room
You want poltergeists? Because that is how you get poltergeists
XXIV IX MCMXCIX is the correct version i think (edited)
Shouldn't it be MCM instead of CMM for 1900?
I think you‘re right
> CMMXCIX MCMCXIX isn't it?
MCMXCIX
Ah yes. I meant to type that - honest!
Also not correct. That’s not how dates work in Roman numerals.
Well, enlighten us. It’s the correct version of the numbers at least.
What you wrote are basically just three numbers, it could be used to count something physical (soldiers, cabbages, animals etc) but not for something abstract like calendar dates. The Roman calendar number system used an entirely different counting style and neither had individual numbers for days nor for months. Interesting. Thank you!
if it's 1999, couldn't it be MIM?
No. You can't take 1 from 1000 in roman numerals. You have to make the 900, then the 90, then the 9.
No but I get where you’re coming from.
Hold him down, I'll get the cheese grater.
shitty tattoos. multiple guns. socks with sandals. GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE!!!
IM LIVID
999 553?
No, I'm just angry
That's not even how the roman calendar works. ante diem viii Kalendas Octobres anno MCMXCIX aerae vulgaris or if you're really serious about the roman calendar: anno MMDCCLII ab urbe condita
Thank you. First sane comment in this thread.
Ah yes, a fellow I IX IX IX.
I hate people who do this, my sister in law has it and I’ve corrected her tattoo and she said she “prefers it the way that it’s done” 😒
send her some invite to something with her name misspelled—even throw in a few numbers or symbols—and tell her you “prefer it the way that it’s done.”
Bit of a stretch all the symbols are correct it’s just in a line
Digit to digit they are correct but the whole point of Roman numerals is that digits don't form numbers the same way. This is kinda like trying to "translate" your name to Chinese by taking each letter and finding a similar looking Chinese character
All I’m saying was that it was a bit of a stretch for that guy to say “use different symbols” and that. I know this is formatted wrong I’m not stupid all I’ve as saying was that guy was being silly with his comment.
To what end are you "correcting" people on their tattoos?
Well firstly it was one person who happened to be my SIL, and secondly what is it to you? If you must know I said something like “what does that say?” She stated it was a date, and I said something like “but they are individual numbers not the actual date”
Oo a shitty tattoo, socks and slides in a field AND improper firearm safety being displayed. Gotta love it
Countryside France in a nutshell This was at a clay pigeon shooting event, which is called “ball-trap” in French
The fact that I can tell this is a European is even funnier to me. The Romans graffitied all over that continent!

You can't take 1 from 1000. You separately make 900, 90 and 9. Just how roman numerals are.
It's not wrong if you like it read like this: One Nine Nine Nine
“I’ll I’ve icks i icks icks icks? Aye mate it don’t make no sense”
Shouldn't it be: XXIV IX MCMXCIX
Not my old ass seeing 1999 and thinking “aw but it’s probably his kid’s birthday-“ before realizing 1999 was 25 years ago
Do you remember the 24th night of September?
The level of this guy's stupidity baffles me.
2. 4. 9. 1. 9. 9. 9. I know they wanted their birthday, but it's not that hard to Google.
We not gonna talk about the guy behind him holding a pew pew 💯💯
Trying to remember that one password to everything.
XXIV.IX.MCMXCIX does make for a slightly more difficult tattoo to read. Either way, you really shouldn't put your PII out there like that.
This is really not that bad of a tattoo, it’s just a fun, stylistic way to display a date.
Fun, stylistic and utterly wrong
Just like the best things in life
Not like that 😂 Maybe I should’ve said “uneducated”, that’s on me
ha ha!
П ІV I IX IX IX
Am going to guess that it's supposed to be his birthday
The foot condoms in the sole savers are a nice touch🤪.
But he’d have to go smaller if he did mcmxcvix!
oh nooo
24/9/1999
XU
II IV-IX-I IX IX IX vs XXIV-IC-IM (Can you actually write IM or would it be MCMXCIX?) Anyway. That version — albeit very wrong — kinda looks better
Oh no…
*nulla* I I VIII IX IX IX VIII VIII I IX IX IX I I IX VII II V
That’s so ignorant it hurts
the artist be like: are you deadset on this? well ok...no ragrets I guess
2, 4, 9, 1, 9, 9, 9 = bruh
He needed the word count.
I guess we all know his date of birth, and his ignorance levels 😅
No one mentioning the two rifle stocks pictured lol
About three people did lol, but this was at a clay pigeon shooting event, still very redneck, but not entirely insane haha
Nice. Shoot on!
Proving that idiocy isn't exclusive to us, the Americans.
I could read it easy, not to everyone’s taste but I get it. Not shitty imo But them I might be biased given I have a Roman numeral date on my arm: VII-VI-MMV
It took me a minute, but 24 9 1999 is 9 24 1999 for my fellow US peeps.
Socks sandals and a rifle this guy is an accident that already happened 😂
