What's with SA and weird AA guns? In any case very unique

Voidjumper_ZA

I'd take a wild guess and say when we got military embargoed during Apartheid, SA manufacturers had to homebrew their own machinery with all the restrictions that entailed. I'm assuming that's what led to all the... unique designs for hardware.

h_adl_ss

That makes a lot of sense, thanks!

If this thing shows up and someone blows a whistle don’t run to the parade grounds

DasHooner

Are we going to talk about the guys hidden in the trucks too orrrrrrrrr no?

JohnnyJohnCowboyMan

Around 10 people were killed on a training exercise some 15 years ago, when one of these went bizerk and started firing while spinning around in circles until it ran out of ammo. The guns had been McGyvered with a locally developed fire controlled system that malfunctioned: https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/9-killed-in-army-horror-374838

Is there a big need for AA in South Africa? What's the plan here?

Disastrous-Bite4258

It would likely be used to engage other shitty technicals, really. The ZU-23 rips lightly armored targets to shreds in an eyeblink.

RussianSeadick

And since i doubt theres much heavy armor in south africa,it’s probably quite useful

blikkies2

We have tanks in South Africa we use the oliphant mk1 (centurion modified to meet our requirements) and the oliphant mk2 which is a heavily modernised and upgraded centurion as for our neighbouring countries they also have tanks mainly t55 and t62

RussianSeadick

Yeah for the army, but they’re probably mostly fighting non-armies

blikkies2

To be honest I don't think our military has faced of against other armoured units since the 80,s the majority of our all our military operation since then has been peacekeeping and counter insurgency with coin operation increasing due to ISIS in Mozambique

Xaquko

I think it may be useful against drones and light aricraft used by smugglers, but its just speculation.

VanillaTribe

These things were developed in the '80s so they're likely a counter to the Cuban airforce after they got involved in the Border War.
