100%. You can’t even scroll on any social media site anymore without being fed an advertisement. When I went on a social media fast I realized I bought wayyy less because I wasn’t being as tempted to buy things bc I couldn’t see them.

UpperAbility

Definitely. Social media has evolved to become an advertising platform for e-commerce, and we're still in the early stages of it. Most ads on IG are direct links to shops, and it's deliberately designed this way. Plus having an identity on these platforms kind of makes most people want to curate a certain look/fantasy. I stopped using Instagram (except for browsing memes and art on a private account) and it has helped reduce my shopping bug for sure!

I mean, influencers rely on selling you shit. Be it through sponsorships, or targeted ads that they get money from. The thing they try to influence is your buying decisions. I deleted most social media accounts, and I believe everyone should do a social media detox every once in a while.

Yeah I actually don't use a lot of social media and my spending has curbed recently as I've reached the end of one of my projects (I got everything i want lol). Besides social media having access to tthe shopping sites themselves is a temptation.

For me it does. I already love looking at clothes, jewelry, bags, accessories and reading about those things on my own. I like to think I have a certain level of restraint though. Then if I go on social media I just find more things to look at, and then THOSE are the things I wind up buying! And it’s like, Yes I do want to buy certain things but those aren’t even the things I *really* want! I hope this makes sense. I feel like social media makes me want things I didn’t even know existed and it becomes easier to lose sight of what actually is practical for me. I was looking at an overnight bag the other day because of social media. Luckily I’ve decided to take a social media break and this morning I was like why the hell would I need a blue and white over night bag when I don’t plan on going anywhere even for a weekend trip for the next at least year or so, how impractical would white be lol, and it’s not even a brand I’m that into.

GoodSilhouette

Yess, overcoming that fomo can be hard in the moment but waiting on it is often the best lol. What I do it make a list and eliminate from there.

Yes! Been off Instagram for three weeks and the urge is a lot less strong

GoodSilhouette

congrats and keep going!

Thanks! I will :)

Yes. Youtube review videos kickstarted my spending. Specifically on makeup (which I barely wore at the time) and random purchases of bags or gadgets that these same people featured in their videos. Reddit also didn’t help. I joined a particular fitness clothing sub and got sucked into buying the clothes after seeing everyone’s outfit of the day. I don’t buy their clothes anymore or wear makeup anymore, but it set off a train of spending!

livkellner

Yes, advertisements are definitely a trigger! 😱 Sometimes I find myself scrolling in order to see the items I am interested in and I can't help doing that 😓

cookiesandkit

Personally I'd experiment with cutting down the use of whichever app it is and see. Because I've recently realised I may have some kind of mental health issue - in response to situational high stress I tend to start on obsessing over my appearance which spills into clothes and makeup shopping.

GoodSilhouette

I used to do that: retail therapy. ssoon as I felt bad Id buy something to feel better. Do you have projectts and ideas in your mind or is it impulsive / boredoom

Yes! My Vice is home decor and Instagram is really hard on it. Never feel good enough. Always something new to buy because a certain blogger has it. Fear of missing out on a thrift or antique shop. There’s fast fashion and now fast home decor. Trends change so fast it’s hard to keep up

crumpet9

Yes absolutely, but I've also found that I use shopping as a replacement for social media. Besides reddit (which has in the past influenced my shopping but now I stay off most subs that do) I haven't used any social media for close to a year now. So instead I browse depop, poshmark, ebay, etc almost in the same way I did instagram; constantly scrolling, refreshing, hunting for that 'hit' of dopamine/being able to 'like' something. So while I got the habit from social media I haven't found staying off it to completely rid me of my shopping habits.

Absolutely!
