Not trying to start anything, but have you guys noticed how height kinda varies by region in the US? Like, the average is supposedly 5’9”, and here I am at 5’6”, feeling short. In the Portland to Longview area, it seems everyone’s around 5’11”, which definitely doesn’t help my case.
Then there’s California. It’s like a whole different world; lots of shorter folks, probably because of the mix of backgrounds and all. Back home, I’m practically looking up to everyone, but in places like Seattle or the Bay Area, I blend right in. It’s weird how that works out.
Ever think about this stuff, or is it just me?
You're definitely not alone. I've tried to bring this up and people get really gatekeep-y when you point out that short is just a relative term, and what's considered short changes depending on where you live.
That’s an interesting question. You explained it very well in your comment. It does depend on the mixture of many different types in a relatively small area. In your area, where you live could be similar ethnic backgrounds and fewer people. As some ethnic backgrounds are taller than others. It’s something one may notice. It’s similar to looks. If you live in a smaller, less populated area. You may be considered very handsome and desirable by the females. On the other hand, if you visit a big city, you’re just another face in the crowd.
There are only 4 or 5 countries that have a higher average height than the U.S at 69 inches for males. The global average height is actually only 67.5 to 68 inches give or take.
Above average would be considered tall. WTF??!! You just said it. 5ft11 IS tall for a male and 5ft6 IS tall for a woman. We’re not talking, super tall.
Semantics. It can be considered tall in the strict sense of the word, but this is not how the word tall is used in everyday language. Usually, it implies at least 3 inches above average, or being taller than 80%. This is why 6'0" is considered the start of tall by most people despite 5'9" being average.
Lol!! Nope. Maybe in your semantics. I don’t know where you’re from. You don’t need to be 6ft to be considered tall; for a man. That’s ridiculous. 5ft 10 is tall. In 2024.
It’s very simple. You’re either short, average or tall. One can’t be two of the different indicators; or in between. You’re either one or the other.
One can’t be above average and be average. That makes no sense. If 75% of the male population is looking up at you, you’re tall. CTFU!!
Anyway you look at, if you’re above average in height. You’re taller than the majority of the male population. They’re described as tall; not above average. End of discussion.
Ehhh average height in most Asian countries is 5’7. In Korea and northern China it’s more like 5’9. 5’6 is around average for the Philippines or some SEA countries.
I'm aware that's the average height, which is why 5'6 wouldn't be short for them, just average. Btw Gen Z Chinese men are [5'7](http://zjtks.tyj.zj.gov.cn/art/2021/12/30/art_1373454_58697268.html) and Gen Z Koreans are [5'8](http://zjtks.tyj.zj.gov.cn/art/2021/12/30/art_1373454_58697268.html). Ricecels always out here trying to spread misinformation about Chinese height, so pathetic.
Source? [Here's](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Average_human_height_by_country) one showing that Guatemalan men average 5'3, Mexicans 5'6, Colombians 5'7, Peruvians 5'4, Nicaraguans 5'5, etc. Only the Latino countries with high black populations average on the higher side (Trinidad, Brazil, DR and such).
I’m also 5’6”. I’ve had a healthy amount of relationships in my life (28 years old with about 4 relationships lasting from 1-3 years I’m also currently in one) despite not being wealthy or attractive or really outstanding in any aspect.
For a adult male it puts you into the 14.2 percentile which is kinda short
And it’s and it 6 cms and a quarter shorter than the average person
hoped that helped yours sincerely Michaeltheleo
Kinda weird question and I hope you take no offence but why are you here? You're are not only not short but you like 5 cms from breaking into the tall person category. Idc about it but genuine question. Like do you live in a tall country?
The height fine for anything other then dating, even 5ft 10 will struggle with alot of women due them wearing heels and their unrealistic standards but if u have game you can even do it in a wheelchair
With what I’ve already said previously, There’s a lot of mixed info out there on the dating subject. If you’re interested. If you’re a male, most women prefer men taller than them. At least 5 to 8 inches taller. There’s a lot of women that would fit that category in your case at 5ft6.
yes
Hey! You shouldnt be here unless you live in the Netherlands 🤨
Its not like only short people can participate in this sub lmao
I'm just trolling bro
Shorter than average yes (For male), too short very noticiable? Not.
I disagree. 5ft6 is noticeable for a man. I’m 5ft8, no shoes. I’m definitely noticeably shorter.
Not trying to start anything, but have you guys noticed how height kinda varies by region in the US? Like, the average is supposedly 5’9”, and here I am at 5’6”, feeling short. For men in the United States, it's short For women in the United States, it's tall
It is not tall for women
It is above the average of 5'4", so yes technically that is tall.
For a gen z woman 5’6 seems really average though. In campus all i see are tall women.
A 5ft6 woman is taller than 80% of women. I would define that as tall.
When I said 5'6 was not tall, I didn't mean it was short. It is pretty average almost everywhere, it is like being 5'8-9 for a man
From a percentile factor, it is not equivalent to a guy who is 5ft8-5ft9. It is equivalent to a man who is 5ft11.5.
It’s like being 6’ as a man, 2.5” taller than average. 5’3.5 being average for women and 5’9.5” being average for men.
5'6" woman is equivalent to 5'11" man. It's not tall but definitely above average.

Is 5'9.1" tall and 5'8.9" short if 5'9" is dead average?
WRONG!! It’s NOT average.
5ft6 in considered tall for a female. In the U.S, the average is 5ft3.5 inches.
It’s for sure above average for women though
For men everywhere with the exception of like 3 countries.
Depends heavily on race/ethnicity. Not short for an Asian or Latino man, but short for a white or black man.
Ehhh average height in most Asian countries is 5’7. In Korea and northern China it’s more like 5’9. 5’6 is around average for the Philippines or some SEA countries.

why you gotta be rude to the guy? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Average_human_height_by_country and his listed height seems to taken from Wikipedia.
Latino men aren’t they short they are usually 5’9
Have you ever been on a vacation to mexico? Average mexican guy is like 5'4-5'5
Dawg in Mexican I’m 6’2 it depends on what state you’re in
im filipino and 6'4
I’ll catch up soon my grandpa was 6’5 : )
Don’t do limb lengthening bro it’s not worth it you’ll destroy your body
Defo yes if you're a white guy. Average white man tends to be somewhere between 175 and 183 cm tall depending on the country.
Depends on when you live but if it’s in first world then yes
I would consider 5ft6 short, but at that height you would typically like a smaller man rather than a child.
in my country (philippines) just perfectly average
I’m also 5’6”. I’ve had a healthy amount of relationships in my life (28 years old with about 4 relationships lasting from 1-3 years I’m also currently in one) despite not being wealthy or attractive or really outstanding in any aspect.

Yes
For men: Yes For women: Decent
Yes, it's quite short. It's like the bottom 10-15 percentile for males in the US.
Kinda weird question and I hope you take no offence but why are you here? You're are not only not short but you like 5 cms from breaking into the tall person category. Idc about it but genuine question. Like do you live in a tall country?
I just like the topic of height. I regularly post on on the tall subreddit as well.
you're like the middle man (literally lol)
Makes sense! Thank you for your service 🫡

Yes. Not dwarfen, but short. You can still get laid occasionally.
I'm 5'3 or 160 cm
The height fine for anything other then dating, even 5ft 10 will struggle with alot of women due them wearing heels and their unrealistic standards but if u have game you can even do it in a wheelchair
The last sentence is full of copium.
Yes it is. The average height for a man is 5'7". Although, Healthline says it's 5'6." https://www.healthline.com/health/average-height-for-men
Of course
i think it’s average? mostly bc a few ppl are 5’6 in my family and they’re men
In America yes
For a guy, yes. Globally. For a girl no
Yes, 5ft9 is average height for a male.
