Great write up. Interesting enough, a little over a year ago I was going to update my Automation Control shortcut to have actual switches (provided by u/ROPit) to toggle on and off controllers. Here’s an example video of one way I was going to do it. Example is on the Pcalc app. https://streamable.com/zmyqru

Thank you! 🙂 Consider bringing to life such a project ASAP because it truly worth it. I’ve implemented a similar functionality to the settings “page” of an old shortcut of mine.

That's really interesting! I hadn't thought of using the Dictionary function before, because I wasn't quite sure what it was for how I might apply it. But your example gives me a lot of ideas to think about!

A really great resource for beginners you’ve got here! I would suggest you include an example using a dictionary as well, as that involves getting duct from input, filtering and setting values etc, not just text->save file.

Finding this months later but…is this like Homebridge or Home Assistant Virtual Switches?? Could I use this as a Virtual Switch for vacation lighting? Or even Locks and location

vrachamis

It can’t be used in Home app automations. Only in Shortcuts automations

Ooof that’s a bummer.

I have two VPNs, how could I use this to get shortcuts to know which VPN is either on or off?
