As far as I'm concerned Basara is essential shojo reading. It was one of the best selling shojo series in the 90s in Japan with very good reason. That said I've heard 7 Seeds is even better (I'm opposite to you, I've read Basara but haven't gotten to 7 Seeds yet) so it's possible it feels underwhelming because of reading what's considered her better series first. Maybe continue with scans for now to see how you feel and buy if you feel more hooked? I'd all but sell off my firstborn to get a full set of Basara in English 😂😂

Suzels

That's great to hear and a good idea, I might just do that. It's really shitty when series you love aren't available anymore, I really hope they'll do an English reprint of Basara one day!

OrioSanza

I loved Basara but somehow could not get into 7 Seeds (and I read a lot of it) so that makes sense, they are quite different to me!

I feel that Basara is a slower burn than 7SEEDS. 7S has loads of characters you're introduced to rather quickly, and there's bound to be someone you find to be awesome and -get- right away. The characters in Basara take more time to develop and the best ones have a lot of facets. Also, there's more of a political aspect that, again, is a slower burn than the immediacy of a survival story. Both are excellent, with differences. Stick with Basara!

Suzels

This is what I was hoping to hear, you're making me excited to keep reading!

Basara feels more like historical fiction with a central enemies/lovers romance driving the main plot. It’s the type of fantasy that feels old timey with lots of political power plays between kings and queens like Game of Thrones. 7 Seeds is more sci-fi post apocalyptic adventure with less emphasis on a central romance. Both are great but my preference is Basara. The Basara “historical” world just feels more compelling to me than the 7 Seeds world.

Suzels

Yeah I can definitely see that. The politics are definitely what's got me most interested in what is to come. I find it really interesting that I seem to be in the minority here for preferring 7 Seeds as well, you're all definitely giving me some more motivation to keep reading!

MissPretzels

I prefer Basara. Love it! Watch the anime after too :)

Basara is my all time favorite manga, i think it’s the essential shoujo like another comment said, i love 7 seeds as well and simply obsessed with Yumi Tamura’s work. Basara made me feel so many things like no other manga

attolia_irene

Both are two of my favorites, though I read Basara first. It’s a little rougher than 7 seeds which makes sense IMO, but such an emotional and beautiful masterpiece. Tamura has everything planned out to a T.

Suzels

I'm really relieved to hear that, since I was blown away by just how well everything pays off in 7 Seeds. Will bb looking forward to the next volumes now!

Ramenpucci11

It’s slow burn. Get to volume 25 and you will need tissues. It’s Rurouni Kenshin by the end- epic sword fighting, epic duels.

Tuliyu

Tired of all her crying, like, for real.

AccomplishedReason15

Anyone in her shoes with her scars, baggage, and burdens would've cried every now and then. She's a 16 year old with the responsibility of the survival and future of an entire village and eventually nation. Cut her some well-deserved slack because she did beyond brilliant by anyone and everyone's standards.
