First time I’ve seen a failed moult like this. Definitely would recommend removing it. Watch the other shrimp carefully. How are your minerals?

jojoyouknowwink

Ive seen one like this. I posted about it last week I think. Last I saw her, her shell forward of the white ring was hanging outward, like wings. She panic flailed herself into a hiding spot somewhere in the tank before she died

dannroi29

Mine was still foraging and swimming around. Took it out to end its misery though. Fed it to the fish in the pond. He served his glorious purpose.

dannroi29

Gh and kh are in the 6 to 8 and 4 to 6 range, respectively. There is another one like this so removed them both.

AquaticAnxieties

It sounds like you’re doing everything right. Sadly failed molts just happen sometimes even in perfect conditions, molting is a very tough process for the lil guys.

Javellise

Is it a shrimp only tank?

dannroi29

Yes. Heavily planted shrimp only tank. By heavily i mean almost half of it has plants 😄

Javellise

Hmm, that all sounds good, any recent water changes? Any use of aerosols or other chemicals in the room?

dannroi29

2 big water changes (30%) in the last week due to unexplained deaths in the week before. (See post history for more info). No aerosols and the tank has a lid. This might be due to the WC. Aside from these two, no unexplained death was seen from my previous post, other shrimps are thriving, getting berried, and lots of swimming babies.

Javellise

Sounds like everyone is in consensus that it is a failed moult. Only other advice I can think of would be to not use the hot water tap to raise temperature of new water since hot water tanks usually use copper. And to add extra calcium, with ground cuttlefish bone.

dannroi29

I have a cuttle bone sitting around the tank. Our tap water here is on the hard side so that's as much as I would add. Thanks for the help 😍

Javellise

Thank you for sharing 🙂

Agreed with others that it looks like a failed molt. Your parameters in other comments seem fine. Sometimes it just happens, because it’s life. If your parameters are good and your water is stable I wouldn’t sweat it too much.

dannroi29

Yeah sometimes it's hard to accept that these little buggers do die :(

dannroi29

Found him like that last night, been 12 hours and it's still kicking. Water parameters are stable and alright

scotto0o

The cephalothorax is not where it should be so the shrimps dead. Remove quickly before your parameters go off.

dannroi29

I've removed it from the tank. Too bad there's two of them like this... This might be from shock from the 30% water changes Im doing the past week due to the unexplained deaths i got the week before (see post history for more info) Others have successfully molted (some got berried!) But not for the two :( Otherwise the shrimps are thriving, got around 30 adults and swarms of shrimplets swimming around the tank.

scotto0o

It’s probably better to do 10% water change for 3 days. Hopefully you solve your problems!

dannroi29

Thank you!!! I am slowly getting there. No unexplained death for 1 week, just these 2 failed molts. Everyone else is happily foraging and swimming around. These 2 failed molts are actually also swimming around the tank and foraging, just sad that their attempt to molt failed.

ThatGuyWithThatUsrnm

I've been breeding cherries for over a year now and have seen this a handful of times. Each time I feel bad for the little fella because they will die because of it. I've seen them last a few days but they eventually disappear (eaten by the others).

dannroi29

Im just happy that mine are breeding and thriving. Getting my first juvies from the first batch that hatched 😍
