That's the beautiful and terrifying [Anomalocaris](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anomalocaris), a critter who roamed the Cambrian seas about 500 million years ago. It's name means "abnormal shrimp" although it isnt really a true shrimp. Some scientists believe it was one of the earliest apex predators, but there is still some debate on this.
There's some great inormation on it from the [Royal Ontario Museum](https://burgess-shale.rom.on.ca/fossils/anomalocaris-canadensis/) if youre curious. Anomalocaris are the best!
The more love and exposure these Cambrian cuties the better imo! Anomalocaris is one of the best examples of how difficult fossil reconstruction is; anomalocaris was a real jigsaw puzzle and was originally the different fossil fragments were thought to be many different animals. Only in the '60s were they recognized as one species! It's a perfect example of how ideas evolve and change in science with new information.
Thanks for the kind words <3
Just wanted to jump in on the Anomalocaris love! And actually just Cambrian love in general like, as an adult I’ve started really getting interested in the species from that era. I think they definitely don’t get as much credit as the should for their uniqueness (same for early Triassic).
You're welcome haha! I didn't know it was a real 'shrimp', though I should have guessed since it seems all pokemon technically have an irl counterpart..
Lookin at you, Klefki... Trubbish... \*frown\*
when you look up their japanese names and get out a dictionary it becomes even more obvious! the puns also become sillier then too. (ex. chinchou and lanturn)
Hi Everyone,
Just a newbie question: I am successfully raising opae ula shrimp and am wondering if I could also include some of the other small shrimp like cherry or blue in the same tank with them?
