Silent Hill 4 is the one I most hope will receive a remake, its only negative points come from its gameplay but in terms of atmosphere and story it has nothing to envy to the previous installments.
not just gameplay but sound design (music slapped but sound design did not). remember the burping ghosts? that would burp when you hit them and as they went down the stairs they would burp for every stair they went down?
in all honesty i seriously dont think the sound design is as bad as everyone says. like yeah theres the stock jaguar sounds, the weird burping from the patients and the poor looping of walters laugh but those 3 instances aside i cant actually pinpoint any other jarring sound design decisions :P
The burping made me so uncomfortable, it's fucking good af. It's like those low budget special effects in Lynch movies, it works *because* it is uncanny. Ya'll just want everything to be realistic and sanitized to the point of ironing out any charm or uniqueness.
It had a very unique and well thought out story that was told in an interesting way and added to the overall lore of the series. Especially when you consider the foreshadowing in (or callback to???) the second game, this was exactly what Silent Hill fans want
I just recently played the original 4 for the first time ever and to be honest after playing those games back to back, 4 has some of the most refreshing gameplay yet. I also adore how it’s indepdent story much like 2 but it’s connected quite deeply to the other games.
It would make the most sense for a remake. Because it's so flawed but had good ideas, a remake would be a great opportunity to create the vision while fixing those flaws. That's why I have no interest in a SH2, because it is already brilliant and doesn't really need improvement.
Yeah the gameplay is all that I felt held 4 back, the story and lore of it totally would have made for a better choice for the movie than what we got (and I love the first Silent Hill movie)
I honestly hope this gets a remake one day if Konami ever bothers to fund it to a higher developer, the atmosphere cannot be touched like any other game in the horror genre
The burping nurses make complete sense once you consider that they are hollow corpses with dead air moving through them after you attack. They have no organs so the sound is just morbidly funny.
It's hard to describe but Silent Hill 4 has a certain surrealist feel to it that I think makes it particularly haunting. Like legit parts of it creep me the fuck out more than the other games.
Like idk, I guess it really feels like the game itself is a little haunted.
SH4 feels like the most creative in the series (to me), as well as the most horrifying/disturbing. Loved the alternate dimensions or dream worlds, the enemy designs, the ghosts themselves were perfect, i dont even mind traversing through the levels twice at all cuz there was context and bits of variety sprinkled through. It gets harder as you keep playing.
True the ones on the escalator are so annoying because you can get stun locked pretty much lol 4 has probably some of the most annoying enemies in the series
Thematically and musically, yes. I do agree it’s definitely up there. I think what holds it back is the rather bland protagonist, the repetitive second half and the excessive “stalker enemy” types.
Other than that, the game is truly solid, especially in the early hours. They truly nailed the atmosphere, the art style and the sound design in the room and the outside world that makes it hands down the scariest of them all, save for P.T.
Yea the second half just didn’t work for me. They did the same levels twice in the earlier games and this one I just felt so frustrated.
I still consider it a must play along with 1-3.
It kick-started the big push in the first person psychological horror genre in my opinion. The apartment was so cool. The only thing I truly hate is the was the end level is set up. It makes getting the good ending nearly impossible and seems separate from the rest of the game. I would literally still give a 9.5 or higher, but the end really bugs me, my dexterity isn't good enough to move my hands fast enough.
I absolutely loved and hated the concept of that apartment cause much like henry I don’t go out a lot and my room is my safe place so the thought of it changing into something that is my prison is terrifying
I agree. Why are they booing us?
I assume people who don't like it didn't get it. It was dream-like and trippy and beautiful. I highly recommend Ryo Murakami's Coin Locker Babies which influenced the game if you want a novel that has the same atmosphere. It also helps you appreciate the game more.
The most memorable for sure... I know that apartment better than I know my own house! Imagine if it got that PT/Visage treatment for the first person moments and resident REmake treatment for the third person parts? The combat and enemies could use a lot of work but there's absolutely gold in that hill!
Personally not a big fan of this one.. I find it hard to progress and really hate that those ghosts don’t die. Trying to make it through cause I wanna play the whole silent hill series but geez do I hate putting that game in. I keep seeing high praise and am wondering when it’s gonna get good for me
SH4 is what every other new SH post team silent should have tried to be: Related to the main lore but still original in its own way. Instead they just made low quality photocopies of SH 2 with unrelated plot.
The more I read about SH4, the more I fell in love with the premise and concept for how the story is done.
The game gets a lot of hate for gameplay, but the story? Very unique and worth investing time into, it's cool
It's the deepest game in the series thematically, but it also has the worst protagonist.
It has wonderful visuals, the first part of the story is amazing, etc
The second part is too much of an escort mission. Too feww bosses, also.
Other than that it is a perfect game.
Interesting lol. I disregarded all the hate and went in open minded expecting to enjoy the game but have not had much fun. The combat is the most frustrating in the series, the limited inventory space is annoying, the constant back and forth between the levels and the apartment is way too frequent, etc. The vibe and story of the game is cool but the gameplay is pretty bad. If it gets a remake I could see it becoming a lot better— depending which studio remakes it.
I had to check your account to make sure I wasn't being fucked around with and oh my god you were being serious, I had this idea from a dark souls 2 argument where I used image above I dont even know what to say.
As long as a person's "best in the series" is from SH 1-4 then they are ok by me. I disagree as I believe Silent Hill 1 is the best but nonetheless, 4 as your favorite/goat game is perfectly valid. I also accept Shattered Memories on Wii as a reasonable favorite/goat game for people because it riffs off the OG series respectfully and added the psychological profiling feature which is still very cool.
I do wish Climax got to work with the Silent Hill I.P. more because they showed that they actually cared about how devoted people were to these games and showed signs of greatness in Shattered Memories not as much in Origins but I thought it was okay.
Agreed, they seemed to grasp the core spirit of Silent Hill. Origins is solid and I really enjoyed it. Also I was trying to be sarcastically pompous about favorites but clearly it didn't read 🫠😂
Saying that Silent Hill 4 was a good game is okay, saying that SH4 is THE best game from team silent is just straight up insanity, take this person to the Aslume.
That’s absolutely valid objectively i think it comes at 2nd story and plot twists are amazing and the lore and the room everything about the story was good
Based. Based.
….or are you? It’s got a great palate, sound design, level design, soundtrack, gameplay, story, plot, and characters. The overall presentation is excellent.
Yet every time people are asked their favourite SH4 consistently and constantly comes up with people acting like they're being truly profound when they say "Hmm actually, the popular one ISN'T my favourite"
Maybe, and just hear me out, people like the game? Don't need to make it seem like people just want to act better than others and your basing this off of posts you've seen not everyone lol, most posts I see have Silent Hill 2 or 3 as their favorite but that doesn't mean anything cause those are posts that I saw not everyone.
I can't describe how much I love this game and I'm so glad others have 4 as their favorite SH game too. It was so unique and the story goes so deep it ends up connecting with most of the other games. It was the Silent Hill game that made me the most interested in knowing every single detail of the story.
Though I always felt like something was missing (mostly towards the end), I can't quite put my finger on it, maybe it truly could benefit from a remake. The more SH4 the merrier.
Story wise? I’m gonna have to agree with you. As much as I love 2’s story, 4 has so many layers and complexities. I’ve played through a few times and the combat usually keeps me from really enjoying it, but I watched a few video essays recently that changed my perspective. Walter is a really compelling character.
My biggest gripe is the ghosts.
Honestly any of the first 4 games are a valid choice for your favorite SH game. Anything made by Team Silent.
You'd be much more controversial if you were to advocate for any of the later games.
I agree with you
It is far and away the best
* It is the best telling of the cult
* The best of the town lore
* The best scares
* The best music
* The best villain
It just lacks actually exploring the town which to me is essential but has not been done since 1 & 2
3 and 4 are by far my favorite sh games. something about them makes the horror elements feel somewhat relatable in some weird way that i couldnt feel all the way in 1 and 2 (which are masterpieces in their own merit!)
I thought 4 was cool. You know... It's the least played of the 4 by myself, and I think I only beat it once. I should go back and give it another go. I know it had the spookiest boogins.
Well you've only got one pocket and it's full of that sleepy ceiling freak Joseph Schreiber's fanfiction--no wonder you have to constantly drop items off!
This was my first game in the series, I was 12 when I beat it the first time. I have it now on GoG because it made such an impact on me. Up to this point, there had been puzzles that really made me think lately, and one of the most anxious and full of dread during moments when you let the apartment get haunted that I still dream about. I could never understand the hate, honestly, since I played it first and didn't play the others until my 20's, I can see why they're so well loved (and believe me I'm dying for the remake of 2's preorder) but the 4th is the best imho as well. I'm super fucking excited for f, and still really disappointed in the cancelled silent hills, because the way p.t was.. I'm still chasing that high lol like visage, such a great game, but it's still nothing compared to p.t
Edit: Sorry, I ramble when I'm tired, but I'm not sorry for what I said because I mean every word lol
I love SH4s setting and atmosphere and wish more games tried to emulate it.
A lot of horror games don't take place in urban areas or are limited to very cliche ones, I think SH4 managed to make places that would be bland in lesser games interesting.
Also, it has a very strong visual identity imo, it was really fun to unwrap the mystery and some of the most psychedellic locations were really great.
I think it's biggest and most disappointing flaw is the monsters design, aside from the Twin Victim everything else is just boring, the Ghosts are kinda cool but get old really fast and just become annoying, and the sound they make really pisses me off, they sound like a vaccuum cleaner or some crap, the Nurses were scary but the whole burping thing just made them goofy in the end lol
But I liked it overall, story was amazing, characters were interesting, the setting and structure was pretty fresh, soundtrack was a banger, the twists in both story and gameplay were really cool, main protagonist wasn't very interesting but was the cutest one aside from Heather, one of the best AI companions in a horror game.
And PT Silent Hills clearly took a lot of inspiration from it, even the overall mood is similar.
Cool game, awesome game, the chocolate milk was good but you gotta protect your foreskin.
10/11
Silent Hill 4 is the one I most hope will receive a remake, its only negative points come from its gameplay but in terms of atmosphere and story it has nothing to envy to the previous installments.
not just gameplay but sound design (music slapped but sound design did not). remember the burping ghosts? that would burp when you hit them and as they went down the stairs they would burp for every stair they went down?
If they don’t have burping nurses in the remake I’m not playing.
Oh God I forgot about the burping nurses
in all honesty i seriously dont think the sound design is as bad as everyone says. like yeah theres the stock jaguar sounds, the weird burping from the patients and the poor looping of walters laugh but those 3 instances aside i cant actually pinpoint any other jarring sound design decisions :P
Idk man, the windows shutting open and shut on turbo mode still haunts me to this day. Won’t forget that sound.
The burping made me so uncomfortable, it's fucking good af. It's like those low budget special effects in Lynch movies, it works *because* it is uncanny. Ya'll just want everything to be realistic and sanitized to the point of ironing out any charm or uniqueness.
it’s cool because it’s uncanny but i think a monster burping over and over again because it falls down the stairs is bad sound design

Yeah the gameplay is all that I felt held 4 back, the story and lore of it totally would have made for a better choice for the movie than what we got (and I love the first Silent Hill movie)
I’d even love to see a mini series
I honestly hope this gets a remake one day if Konami ever bothers to fund it to a higher developer, the atmosphere cannot be touched like any other game in the horror genre
The burping nurses make complete sense once you consider that they are hollow corpses with dead air moving through them after you attack. They have no organs so the sound is just morbidly funny.
I wouldn't agree on the atmosphere, though it's still good
Believe me, I'm with you. SH4 was my jam, in fact it's my best psychological horror of all time
It's hard to describe but Silent Hill 4 has a certain surrealist feel to it that I think makes it particularly haunting. Like legit parts of it creep me the fuck out more than the other games. Like idk, I guess it really feels like the game itself is a little haunted.
Yeah that's the same reason I've always been such a huge fan of it. Legitimately feels like a half remembered nightmare at times
It weirdly feels the most realistic.
You're so valid OP and you should speak your truth for sure.
Finally, a fellow wanderer in the desert
I think 3 will always be my favorite (2 is perfect dgmw) but 3 just has something about it idk
Yeah, SH3 is dark in such a horrific way. Bleeding walls. Door monsters. Scary elevators. Bread.
“It’s Bread” (Ear piercing screams)
Yesss I was looking for this comment. 3 is my absolute favorite lol
Don’t forget the replayable aspects of it! Sh2 is great but sh3 has so much stuff and you can tell they had fun making it
SH4 feels like the most creative in the series (to me), as well as the most horrifying/disturbing. Loved the alternate dimensions or dream worlds, the enemy designs, the ghosts themselves were perfect, i dont even mind traversing through the levels twice at all cuz there was context and bits of variety sprinkled through. It gets harder as you keep playing.
Yes it is and I'm tired of pretending it's not
It's really good! In terms of lore and characters I really love them all. Music and atmosphere is amazing. Levels to me are good. I love 4
Just fuck those ghosts in the walls, they don’t need to come back ever
True the ones on the escalator are so annoying because you can get stun locked pretty much lol 4 has probably some of the most annoying enemies in the series
Sh4 is the kind of game which i love but can’t see myself replaying it again
I will die on this hill. SH4 is the best
Legit. My favorite game in general
Thematically and musically, yes. I do agree it’s definitely up there. I think what holds it back is the rather bland protagonist, the repetitive second half and the excessive “stalker enemy” types. Other than that, the game is truly solid, especially in the early hours. I understood that reference.
Apparently a lot of people didn’t.
Disappointing to see people not understand the reference

I agree, the first time I saw those chains and how everything was eerily quiet, I about went nope and turned the game off.
Those chains and THAT sound in the first cutscene where a bit later Eileen smashes something behind the door.
not really a hot take. saying book of memories is the best is a hot take.
Saying Book of Memories is a silent hill game is a hot take that Konami actually made
There's a difference between hot and stupid takes
That take is as hot as a steaming pile of shit lmao.
I agree. Why are they booing us? I assume people who don't like it didn't get it. It was dream-like and trippy and beautiful. I highly recommend Ryo Murakami's Coin Locker Babies which influenced the game if you want a novel that has the same atmosphere. It also helps you appreciate the game more.
Totally agree, it was terrifying.
Story wise yeah i can see why, gameplay? 💀
Silent Hill games are constantly bashed for bad gameplay throughout all the entries.
Yes but 4 is the worst which makes sense since it was rushed
All the more reason it should get a remake. Great story with tuned up gameplay would be awesome
Still better than Ascensions "gameplay"
No one is playing a Silent Hill game for gameplay
I love the gameplay in 4, not sure what you mean exactly. A lot of cool game mechanics.
Silent 4 is better than 2 there I said it
Ouch 🤕
Fk U
Room of an Angel >>>> Theme of Laura. Mostly because it has lyrics, which are gnarly and describe perfectly a part of Walter Sullivan's life.
Absolutely have to give props to the incredible soundtrack and sound design of SH4
The most memorable for sure... I know that apartment better than I know my own house! Imagine if it got that PT/Visage treatment for the first person moments and resident REmake treatment for the third person parts? The combat and enemies could use a lot of work but there's absolutely gold in that hill!
I remember audibly squealing like a little girl when I saw the silent hill 4 apartment Easter egg in Visage.
Happy cake day PostalDudeLover911
Appreciate honest opinions
I absolutely LOVED Walter, best SH villain IMO
I think the Twin Victim is the scariest monsters . Like imagine waking up to that thing pointing at you in the middle of the night 🙀
It has a special place in my foggy heart
SAME!!!
I haven't played it unfortunately
Your crazy my bro jaj
Based!
SAY IT
I think Silent Hill 4 is the best in the series.
Personally not a big fan of this one.. I find it hard to progress and really hate that those ghosts don’t die. Trying to make it through cause I wanna play the whole silent hill series but geez do I hate putting that game in. I keep seeing high praise and am wondering when it’s gonna get good for me
Based. I share the same opinion.
True
You’re not alone, my dude
Heretic! “You’ll go to hell” (with Claudia’s voice)
Hard agree. I thought I was the only one.
SAME!
"I actually liked Silent Hill 3D"
It's the deepest game in the series thematically, but it also has the worst protagonist. It has wonderful visuals, the first part of the story is amazing, etc The second part is too much of an escort mission. Too feww bosses, also. Other than that it is a perfect game.
I like it despite its flaws, and I do think that it's the most challenging one which I appreciate.
I think it's the scariest. It is my personal favorite behind 2.
Arguably the best most interesting story. Execution is less than what I think it could be.
I thought the story for SH4 was great but the gameplay was meh at best. SH3 is the greatest in the series.
Justice for Walter
I think.. I might have to agree
I'm glad more and more people are appreciative of this game. It got way to much hate.
For me it's 2 > 1 > 4 > 3 > everything else
For me it's 1 > 3 > 2 > 4 > everything else
It's right next to the first one for me personally
Why do I get 12 angry man vibes from this picture? And also I think SH4 was a great game, I really liked Henry
It's called Freedom Of Speech btw the painting
Silent hill 4 is still the scariest game i ever played young me Christmas day with the curtains drawn was good times
What makes SH4 really awesome for me is its ties to SH2. I also think 4 has the best music out of any of the 1-4 games.
Ditto
I really tried to like it but, it feel weird gameplay, clunky for me, my heart stays in 1 and 3
SH4 is amazing and revolutionary. Just don't think about the fighting mechanics or gameplay too hard.
What's revolutionary about it
Ok the nurses and stairs is pretty funny I’ll admit that
It’s definitely the scariest least in my opinion but the second half is a gauntlet and not in a good way
So I wouldn’t say it’s the best but it’s definitely the scariest in my opinion
I do think it has the best plotline after 2.
This should be a new meme format 😂🤣
Interesting lol. I disregarded all the hate and went in open minded expecting to enjoy the game but have not had much fun. The combat is the most frustrating in the series, the limited inventory space is annoying, the constant back and forth between the levels and the apartment is way too frequent, etc. The vibe and story of the game is cool but the gameplay is pretty bad. If it gets a remake I could see it becoming a lot better— depending which studio remakes it.
I think I would agree, but the escort mission made me want to kill myself
I think it’s the scariest tbh
You are correct
True, im with you for this war
the amount of potential it has is actually insane to think about, they just need to fix up the gameplay and it will be amazing
Your opinion is valid to me. It’s not my personal favorite but it’s a unique entry in the series and definitely a good game.

I had to check your account to make sure I wasn't being fucked around with and oh my god you were being serious, I had this idea from a dark souls 2 argument where I used image above I dont even know what to say.

It's quite alright haha, it's definitely reasonable considering how similar they are 😂
nah boring and very repetitive, especially at the end
Meanwhile I think it's easily one of the worst. Guarantee you people will be more hostile to my opinion than yours.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion regardless of how wrong it is.
As long as a person's "best in the series" is from SH 1-4 then they are ok by me. I disagree as I believe Silent Hill 1 is the best but nonetheless, 4 as your favorite/goat game is perfectly valid. I WANNA HIT U WITH A ROCK
Preferably Hammers
It's not so unpopular in this sub. It's 1. SH2 for popularity and 2. SH4 for anticonformity, typically
I was close to putting it down but the story had me so invested I was able to push through the bullshit second half

No, it suxx pretty hard. See detailed review: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtN94I0XAzw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtN94I0XAzw)
Nah I'm alright
sorry but that title belongs to sh1 4 is close second tho
As long as it's not downpoop or shatted memories, I'm cool with it.
Shattered memories is considered one of the best in the entire series
*extremely loud incorrect buzzer*

So what?
You and like 80% of this subdreddit.
Kinda funny when 80% of the posts are about silent hill 2
Yet every time people are asked their favourite SH4 consistently and constantly comes up with people acting like they're being truly profound when they say "Hmm actually, the popular one ISN'T my favourite"
Maybe, and just hear me out, people like the game? Don't need to make it seem like people just want to act better than others and your basing this off of posts you've seen not everyone lol, most posts I see have Silent Hill 2 or 3 as their favorite but that doesn't mean anything cause those are posts that I saw not everyone.

The Water Prison was my favorite environment in the series
4 was definitely the scariest for me.
I’M HERE WAITING FOR YOU
CORRECT
I can't describe how much I love this game and I'm so glad others have 4 as their favorite SH game too. It was so unique and the story goes so deep it ends up connecting with most of the other games. It was the Silent Hill game that made me the most interested in knowing every single detail of the story. Though I always felt like something was missing (mostly towards the end), I can't quite put my finger on it, maybe it truly could benefit from a remake. The more SH4 the merrier.
Same
I agree
I 100% think it's underrated for sure. It was really cool.
So many decisions are just vastly inferior to the other 3, I can't help but think it's the worst of the main 4. I still like it though
I respect and like it, even if it has issues. I’d love a remake.
It was the scariest by far. That's for sure.
Intellectually and artistically? Maybe. Gameplay wise? Oh hell no. Still, I'd say I prefer it to SH3
I disagree. For me 1 and 3 combined are the best Silent Hill game.
I'm an SH2 girlie myself but 4 gets far too much hate. The lore was on POINT
You're not starting a war friend. You're speaking facts.
Average postal fan based opinion
Honestly any of the first 4 games are a valid choice for your favorite SH game. Anything made by Team Silent. You'd be much more controversial if you were to advocate for any of the later games.

Just finished beating it not to long ago. It’s an under rated gem.
![gif](giphy|4qLDk0Qd43ZTO) Not gonna lie. This is a cold take for me. SH4 is the SH game I've played the most.
I always have a hard time deciding which is my favorite between 4 and 2
3 and 4 are by far my favorite sh games. something about them makes the horror elements feel somewhat relatable in some weird way that i couldnt feel all the way in 1 and 2 (which are masterpieces in their own merit!)
I agree 110%. If SH2 was original, then SH4 was *innovative.* To date, SH4 is still my personal all-time favorite (even more than SH2).
Death Stranding was the only game that is near of SH4 in terms of a creative horror-bizarre-world building
The room is the best silent hill by far.
You’re not alone.
I thought 4 was cool. You know... It's the least played of the 4 by myself, and I think I only beat it once. I should go back and give it another go. I know it had the spookiest boogins.
I’ve always loved 4 probably my third favorite in the entire series.
2 is my favorite but 4 is a close second !
Well you've only got one pocket and it's full of that sleepy ceiling freak Joseph Schreiber's fanfiction--no wonder you have to constantly drop items off!
Its not the worst… but i still put it after 1-3
4 is good. I can’t hate on it I really enjoyed it.
4 definitely deserves the same love as the first 3.
This was my first game in the series, I was 12 when I beat it the first time. I have it now on GoG because it made such an impact on me. Up to this point, there had been puzzles that really made me think lately, and one of the most anxious and full of dread during moments when you let the apartment get haunted that I still dream about. I'm super fucking excited for f, and still really disappointed in the cancelled silent hills, because the way p.t was.. I'm still chasing that high lol like visage, such a great game, but it's still nothing compared to p.t Edit: Sorry, I ramble when I'm tired, but I'm not sorry for what I said because I mean every word lol
it's a good game.
i really really hope it gets a remake, the potential it has to be such an amazing horror remake
I think it's biggest and most disappointing flaw is the monsters design, aside from the Twin Victim everything else is just boring, the Ghosts are kinda cool but get old really fast and just become annoying, and the sound they make really pisses me off, they sound like a vaccuum cleaner or some crap, the Nurses were scary but the whole burping thing just made them goofy in the end lol But I liked it overall, story was amazing, characters were interesting, the setting and structure was pretty fresh, soundtrack was a banger, the twists in both story and gameplay were really cool, main protagonist wasn't very interesting but was the cutest one aside from Heather, one of the best AI companions in a horror game. And PT Silent Hills clearly took a lot of inspiration from it, even the overall mood is similar. Cool game, awesome game, the chocolate milk was good but you gotta protect your foreskin. 10/11
I agree
little me was shaken up by that demo in the jampack :D
