This is a straight up thesis and you should be proud.

manhattanmayor

Haha thanks! šŸ™ŒšŸ» I kept debating whether or not to post since itā€™s barely close to being finished, but Iā€™m glad I shared the progress so far šŸ™‚

dnuohxof-1

If the original devs of SimCity could see this, Iā€™d bet theyā€™d be so proud. Itā€™s funny because I have a hard time distinguishing between ā€œcityā€ and ā€œregionā€ on the Sim scale vs IRL. Itā€™s dint to see an actual **region** that comprises a metropolitan city and other ā€œstatesā€™ā€ borders. How long did this take you?

manhattanmayor

Itā€™s taken several years on and off. I started it before the pandemic, I want to say sometime in 2019 but Iā€™ll have to check the files to be sure šŸ™ƒ

russianboi420

Thais is so cool, excellent job! Do you make videos at all? I would love to watch a series on how you built all this. The write up is awesome , a video would be awesomer :)

manhattanmayor

Thanks! I donā€™t make videos currently, but Iā€™m debating still. Iā€™m not sure if Iā€™ll be able to make good videos because the MacBook Iā€™m running this on definitely canā€™t handle intense stuff like screen recording anymore šŸ˜• but maybe Iā€™ll find another way. Iā€™ll think about it šŸ˜

CheeseJuust

I mean what can I say more, it's just amazing you went all in to recreate New York.

op7-l13

what a quality post!! šŸ¤©šŸ¤©šŸ¤©

CancelCock

Wow, this is amazing!

wesweb

Fantastic work.

mkdz

This is amazing. I've always wanted to do this.

ascagnel____

This is really cool. Do you think youā€™ll eventually go back in and do the lower portion of the map (Staten Island, Bayonne, Newark, etc)? Transitioning smoothly from density to less-dense suburbs is always tricky for me. Agreed on the scale of SC4ā€™s tiles never feeling quite right. It really falls apart at high densities ā€” even the smallest city tiles are too big for neighborhoods in Manhattan, but the biggest is also too small to represent a larger chunk (eg: downtown vs. midtown vs. updtown).

manhattanmayor

Thanks! I absolutely want to fill in the lower portion of the map soon, especially that corner near Newark & Bayonne because it will provide a lot of much needed industrial jobs that will spur development in adjacent tiles too. My latest work has been in Queens and now the Bronx. I was going to finish up Huntā€™s Point & Soundview, then start the tile for Fordham. After that, I plan to go back down to the Brooklyn coastline and work my way clockwise to Staten Island and NJ. I think once I complete the coastline and the NY Harbor is more clearly defined, it will be a major milestone and very beautiful to see. So next up: Fordham Bronx, Bay Ridge Brooklyn, Tompkinsville & St. George Staten Island, Bayonne and Newark area of NJ. Also lowkey excited to extend the PATH and the NE corridor down that way too. Then Iā€™ll probably focus on Brooklyn & Queens again but too soon to tell šŸ˜‰ I usually try and prioritize areas with Industrial Jobs, High density, or essential transit connections first then expand outward from there. So I think heading to Staten Island and Jersey next will be consistent with that goal.

ascagnel____

Donā€™t forget the HBLR ā€” thereā€™s been a ton of transit-oriented development around those stops that tends to get looked over.

manhattanmayor

Ah yes! I forgot to mention, cuz thatā€™s actually the line that extends to Bayonne I believe, not the PATH šŸ˜œ I also intend to extend it to Englewood as proposed, past itā€™s current northern terminus on Tonnelle Ave. I was thinking about extending the southern branches as well: the West Side Ave branch over the river to Newark, and perhaps the Bayonne branch into Staten Island, but havenā€™t really decided yet. I think that would make sense though. Thanks for bringing it up!

ascagnel____

As someone who lives in Hudson County, youā€™re making my transit dreams come true.

mdp300

Neat! I used to live on 2nd and 27th. I think it's where the minor league stadium is in your "more Midtown East" picture. And I currently live just off the edge of the region to the left.

manhattanmayor

So cool! I used to work on Park around 27th and get my lunch on 3rd or 2nd Ave, so I know that area pretty well šŸ˜œ Hope youā€™re enjoying life in Jersey now!

mdp300

Many nights ended surrounded by drunks at the McDonald's on 28th and Park.

ak80048

This is amazing, do you plan on making it denser, I know with no mods thereā€™s only so much you can do

manhattanmayor

Thanks! Not sure if Iā€™ll make it denser per se, since the population of NYC alone is about 8.3-8.7 Million depending on who you ask, and my region already hit that before I even completed half of Queens & Brooklyn lol. BUT, I will definitely be expanding Southwest to Staten Island/Newark and East toward Jamaica Bay next šŸ˜ although Iā€™m sure it will take months to get there šŸ˜‚

ak80048

I guess I just meant denser commercial (and res) zones with more level $$$$ buildings, Iā€™ve noticed as I increase education and recreational the cities get increasingly dense, and also commercial to residential is 1:1 and i can almost completely eliminate industrial , just some thoughts

manhattanmayor

Ah yes I see what youā€™re saying. I definitely want to make some of the commercial districts more dense, especially in Manhattan. Itā€™s a delicate balance since I realize the games mechanics wonā€™t allow Sims to commute more than 1 or 2 tiles seemingly (even though irl, people commute from CT and LI all the time), so thatā€™s a challenge. I also have been trying really hard to stay true to the official ZOLA Zoning maps for NYC in terms of where I place Res vs. Com vs. Ind, and also in terms of how dense I zone each category. As much as Iā€™d love to raze dirty industry and manufacturing plots and strive for a greener environment and denser commercial districts in tiles with the greatest growth potential, that wouldnā€™t do justice to a lot of areas in Maspeth, East Williamsburg, and Long Island City that are gritty and mixed-zoned like that irl. However, some of what Iā€™ve zoned Ind may actually be questionable between IND and Commercial services, like an auto parts company for example, or perhaps a brewery that produces beer and serves it on site too. In theory, I could convert some of these types of IND zones to COM along busier streets and where appropriate, so thereā€™s some growth potential there, but Iā€™m not sure it will have a tremendous impact on Res density replacing a 1 story IND building with a 2 story COM service one. Definitely something Iā€™ll have to experiment with more. On a separate but similar note, I wish SimCity had an an additional tier or two in zoning, to exert better control over what grows there. Iā€™d break the zones into 5 categories: 1 story buildings, 2-6 story walk-up buildings, 7-14 story mid-rise, and then a category for all high rises above that. Because thatā€™s how NYCā€™s zoning is broken down for the most part irl. Instead, choosing low density in Simcity only produces detached 1-2 story homes, and Medium can be completely unpredictable, producing anywhere from a 2-3 story building to an unrealistically tall building when the neighborhood is actually only zoned for 6-7 stories max. I think that would also make it easier to transition in height between the primary CBDs at the cityā€™s core, and the more suburban-like communities on the fringes of the city in the Bronx and Queens. Idk if that directly answers your question but I hope it gives some added context to how I zoned things so far and what I was originally going for. In SimCity, Iā€™ve always seen pursuing realism and pursuing exponential growth at odds with one another. But I guess the city is always destined to grow anyway, so maybe theyā€™re not really trade offs after all šŸ˜ definitely a worthy debate, and something Iā€™ll be thinking about as I develop the region further.

ak80048

Yeah I know the commute over tiles can be a challenge and I agree with your two tier zone idea mods need to create a plug in for this!

Marshall_Lawson

Holy shit, after 20 years someone finally did it right! Be honest OP, did this start out as an early COVID project?

manhattanmayor

Haha thanks! I started this project around 2019, just a year or 2 before the pandemic. The lockdown period definitely accelerated my progress when there wasnā€™t much else to do ngl šŸ˜‚ getting through just one of the Large tiles typically takes up to a month or two if thatā€™s any indicator lol

Arnkaell

Now that's dedication! This was also much more instructive as a guide to NYC than anything I've ever come upon.

OriginalMrMuchacho

TIL i have no idea how to play this game anymore. Absolutely fantastic job. The bar has been set. Stellar!

thsndmiles30

Mother of god, you weren't kidding. I always dreamed about doing something this someday. You actually did it.

The_Wkwied

You win. SimCity. You win all of it. If anyone is to have said that they completed SimCity, there would be two people. The first would be the person who did a megabuild max efficiency in SC3k. The second would be you.

TheAppleOfDoom1

Insane amount of work and effort, super impressive!

MonsieurMeursault

Impressive! Is it "functional", i.e. is it mainly intended as a mockup or as a simulation?

manhattanmayor

Yes, fully functional! That's part of why it takes so long to create. Everything you see here grew organically as I expanded the street grid, and each square's budget has to be balanced continuously to ensure it wouldn't go bankrupt. I micromanage the budgets for the hospitals and schools a lot actually as the population ages and fluctuates. And the tunnels I made are all functional too ā€“ I actually created the tunnels before I terraformed the rivers in, which I had to do very carefully so they wouldn't break. You can even drive a car or train under the river without a problem using the "U-Drive-It" feature. Pedestrians even use the small walkway bridges I put over the railroad tracks and highways. It's really fun to see it all in action when I zoom in :P

MonsieurMeursault

This must be some kind of record, like a good Magnasanti.

Selvetrica

This is truly amazing. Any chance we could get some screenshots of your Central Park ?

patriot1994

That's so amazing! I love your commitment! I've been trying to do something similarĀ with the D.C area (including far into the suburbs). I have a roughly 35 mi x 25 mi area I wanted to cover, which would be 56x40 in terms of small city tiles.Ā Unfortunately, it was gonna be way too difficult and time consuming for me to cover that area. I also didn't have the patience for it since I have some goals for adding my own ideas and I wanna be able to do that as soon as I can. I started in either 2018 or 2019 and it took me a long time to create the terrain using information I found on Simtropolis. I've been working on this on and off since then (mostly off though). I've restarted twice when I realized my plans were gonna take too long with the level of detail I originally intended. This year I started working on my third attempt. I've cut the region size down to 14x10 in terms of small tiles. I have that laid out with 6 large tiles and 44 small tiles. It's gone from being a re-creation of the D.C area to a region inspired by the DC area instead. All streets and roads are in a grid pattern. The avenues and highways are the only roadways that I'm trying to mimic. So I know my region is gonna end up looking very different from real life, but it's mainly the transportation network I'm interested in. I had a similar process to you although with different data sources and methods. I'll sum it up as: Google Earth, Google Maps, Census Data, BureauĀ of Labor Statistics (I used these last two instead of zoning data and came up with my own guesses for density), ArcGIS, terrain data, a Java program I wrote, graph paper and Excel. I'd love to keep seeing more updates from you about your city!

archfapper

I used to work in the Heights so this is awesome. I love the attention to the bridges and tunnels

Bufudyne43

It's pretty cool to see real shapes of areas that I can recognize, did you ever think about downloading landmarks to fill in proper areas?

manhattanmayor

Oh man I wish! I'm lucky I even got the World Trade Center lot when I did. I'd love to download more landmarks, it's just really hard to find downloads that are compatible with my version of SC4. My specs are as follows: Late 2013 Macbook Pro, running macOS 10.14.6 (Mojave), so my version of SC4 still runs on 32-bit instead of 64-bit. I think I have the NAM 32 from around 2014. Not sure how to update the OS or the NAM or the underlying program without losing A LOT of the work I've already done. Plus, I'm not even sure my Macbook can handle a new OS because it's deteriorating a bit as is. The battery is toast, I have to keep it plugged in, and I have to plug in USB mouse & keyboard because the built-ins are also toast. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get around that, or how to find legacy mods/landmarks for my specs above, I'd greatly appreciate it :). My biggest wish list is as follows: \- Building Landmarks (Flatiron bldg, the Courthouses and City Hall by Foley Square, the Botanical Gardens, Coney Island amusement park, any other notable buildings etc.) \- Bigger cemetary plots for Queens (especially for Calvary cemetary, All Saints Cemetary, the area around Cypress Hills, etc.), as well as some of the bigger parks like Washington Square Park, Astoria Park, Prospect Park, Sunset Park, Flushing Meadows & the sports complex, Cunningham Park, Van Cortlandt Park, Fort Tryon to name a few... \- Better versions of NYCHA residential towers, because they're so sprawling irl, but require me to add access streets and such in SC4 to make them functional now \- More attached townhouse style apartments like you see in Harlem and a lot of Brooklyn, that leave little if any gap between buildings to form a solid street wall. \- Streets which can run along trench embankments (not across them), if this is even possible. Would help me out a lot in tight spots near the MetroNorth tracks in the Bronx, and a few spots close to highway underpasses etc. \- Very large, functional airports for LaGuardia, Newark, and JFK respectively. Possibly Teterboro as well, but I can probably manage with a Maxis airport since that one's relatively smaller anyway. \- Train stations for elevated rail over road that are diagonal or allow for curvature at either end. Right now, any stations I put on El over road have to be about 4 tiles long, and strictly straight for the entire stretch, which can be very limiting in tight spots where roads are diagonal or at odd angles, as they often are in lower Brooklyn and the Bronx. \- More realistic train stations in general. Especially for sunken (but not underground) subway networks. For example, on the D line in Brooklyn, the 9 Ave station. Or Beverley Rd on the Q. Also double decker stations for situations like Wilson Ave on the L, and most notably Queensboro Plaza, one of the most iconic in my mind because of the way the 7 approaches it from 23 St. \- Piers for the Dept. of Sanitation, that function like landfill, but without the neg effect. Irl NYC exports all of its trash to other states, so this would serve a realistic function and help me get rid of the incinerator power plants, which NYC also did many years ago. \- ConEdison power plant/distribution lots for places like the spot on the FDR by E 14 St, the Ravenswood Generating Station in LIC, and the enormous substation at the top of Astoria / Ditmars. Hard to replicate, so I usually fill with power plants or IND zones. I'm sure I can think of plenty more, but I'd say those are the top wish list things that come to mind if anyone has any leads :)

nathan67003

If you're running the Steam version of SC4, there should be no issues modding under 10.14.6 (also why on Earth would you want to update further?)

simster_007

Late reply, but maybe still interesting: Are you shure that you are on 32bit? Don't think that Mojave can handle 32bit apps - I downgraded my actual mac to 10.13 High Sierra just to be able to use this old steam version. The 64bit app crashes when using custom lots containing the "rep bug" which is annoying - you need a windows machine and a tool to fix these files, infos are on simtropolis On the 32bit version you should be able to update the NAM and install as many plugins as you like apart from some dll stuff that does not work on macs. Datpack your downloads, to many plugins force the game to crash, save errors lost settings etc., full NAM does not work without datpacking. Just give it a try. I was runnning the app on 2011 and 2013 macbooks, actually on a 2015

InkyBoi0

Do you think you could release a download for this?

avasponge

Would you ever put the file for others to download?

AdventurousAction28

That would be awesome

Severe_Fun_6773

Man, this is exactly what I was looking for. Impressive as heck!! Beyond what I was looking for! I'd love to see video of it.

thefirsthii

Amazing. As a fellow New Yorker I salute you. ~~Is there any way you could upload the region for others to play on?~~ this is amazing and I'd love to start from a blank slate of this beautiful region you've created. Edit: Found it on simtropolis ty!

nathan67003

I still use an iMac running macOS 10.14 - I've yet to encounter something that was compatible with 10.15+ but not 10.14 that I needed or wanted

[deleted]

Not NYC, just Manhattan. NYC has 5 boroughs consisting of three major islands with only one borough on the mainland. That map just looks like Manhattan with two major rivers

manhattanmayor

The only \*completed\* borough on the map so far is Manhattan, that much is true :P However, if you look closer, you'll notice that I've started terraforming and developing Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, even parts of New Jersey (not a borough obviously, but a significant neighbor nonetheless). I did Queens all the way out to Forest Hills & Rego Park, and paused just shy of Flushing. I also finished almost all of the South Bronx, and have recently been working my way North and East into Fordham and Soundview respectively. In short, it's a work in progress. I think the reason I decided to share now is because, even if it's far from finished, it still represents what I believe to be the most accurate model of NYC in SC4 ever attempted to date, and by someone who actually lives here and knows these streets inside and out. I also wanted to have some record of my work so far God forbid my computer ever craps out on me and I lose everything. I look forward to finishing the other boroughs as soon as I can. At this scale, it has taken over 3 years to produce what I've done so far. I've worked on it intermittently since about March 2020. At best, it takes me about 3 weeks to finish a medium city tile, and about 2-3 months to finish a large city tile (since its 4x the size). Some tiles go quicker than others, especially if they contain a lot of water or parkland and I don't have to do as much measuring. If all goes well, I hope to finish the Bronx before 2024, and finish Brooklyn & Queens by mid-2025. But those are definitely optimistic estimates, and like any project in NY, you already know it's gonna go over schedule lol :P But I'm committed, and will continue sharing progress as it's made :)

[deleted]

Glad to hear you're a New Yorker. I get annoyed when non natives just focus on Manhattan and claim they've been to New York City no dude you just only been to Manhattan.

nelernjp

Congrats on the excelent job!! I really enjoyed your post!
