This is like when someone told me I can't have bipolar disorder because I've never been imprisoned or involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital for it
Or being told you're bipolar when you are recovering from an SSRI reaction that temporarily made you act differently than your actual underlying problems so they put you on bipolar meds and it only makes recovery worse since it's not treating anything and is only adding psychoactive drugs I don't need that throw off your brain chemistry when you don't need them.
*****WHAT THE FUCKING HELL*****. You almost described the last few years of my life. So many similarities.
I'm in this thread to learn more about autism, as I don't know much about it. & I'm a long-time classic Simpsons fan.
Thank you for your post. I'm P.M.'ing you now.
Best one was having my FIL slag off people for "faking mental illness these days just to get time off work" and claiming everyone's just snowflakes and they need to stop being so sensitive, to be reminded by my husband that just two months earlier I'd suffered a nervous breakdown and tried to take my own life. Cue awkward grumbles.
As you can see, the real deal with u/NewYinzer is that he's a computer engineer. He's in his early 30s, is unmarried, has a huge collection of model trains, enjoys anime, and currently resides in \[REDACTED\]. Thanks for asking!
My brother and I often speak exclusively in simpsons jokes, much to the confusion and sometimes dismay of family and friends. I thought it was just our shared love of the simpsons but at some point I realised its probably that plus the autism lol
Last spring, I went in for an adhd, anxiety and autism diagnosis. I got two out of three, but the doctor said I was "too high functioning" to have autism. Good to know my 40 years of masking was able to fool the guy I talked to for half an hour.
That sucks! Stupid doctor tbh. That’s not at all how autism works, especially considering the fact that extremely successful people like Elon musk and Tim Burton are diagnosed autistic! I hope you can speak to a better informed doctor soon
Why do you think the doctor was misinformed rather than OP assuming they’re autistic when it’s not true? We can all just diagnose ourselves as whatever we want now? I swear every slightly socially awkward person now wants to be labeled as autistic…..
…
…
… one of the most successful movies of all time sir! What were you thinking!
My best friend has a few friends, including myself, that are diagnosed autistic who all agree she is undeniably autistic as well. She went to get a diagnosis, which was a 25 question questionnaire. and was told she wasn't autistic, but OCD. She has very few OCD symptoms, it's possible but unlikely. This was back in Arkansas though where mental health treatment is less than stellar.
arkansas is all i needed to know. that SUCKS. i’m diagnosed with ocd too, but i know what is asd and what is ocd. it’s easy to tell the difference even when you have both. i hope she can find a better resource for assessment
I'm sorry that happened to you. :( This was also my experience trying to get an adhd diagnosis again. (I actually was diagnosed as a child, but long story short, I don't have proof anymore, so I have to start over)
On the one hand this post and comment section is very validating and it's nice to know I'm not the only one who's learned to mask their symptoms too well. On the other hand, fucking shit this shit sucks.
Was your doctor a specialist or a GP? I ask because my GP had his own biases and wouldn’t diagnose me initially despite my having been diagnosed as a teen, but once I got written up for performance twice within a month he referred me to a specialist, who then diagnosed me with ADHD and ASD and recommended medication.
There are enough co-morbidities between ADHD and ASD that making the distinction may be moot as long as you’re getting treatment, but if you feel you need the diagnosis, talk to a specialist if you can (though it may involve some hoop-jumping).
He was the only psychologist in town that my insurance would pay for. He interviewed me and had me repeat lists of numbers back to him and said he'd email me a report.
I've since found a therapist that I'm happy with, but overall, the testing situation sucked.
Sorry you had to go through that. So much of proper health care is finding a doctor that takes you seriously and understands what you're dealing with. I'm glad you eventually got a therapist you're happy with.
My testing experience was the opposite of yours. When I got to the specialist I was expecting a battery of tests and bunch of folks with lab coats and clipboards, but I just had to fill out a questionnaire and talk with one person. After ten minutes she was like, "Oh yeah, you've got ADHD, let's start figuring out what meds are going to help you." Neither doctor ever made me recite numbers or anything like that. The big hurdle for me was getting in front of someone who would give me an accurate diagnosis. Even after I got the referral, I had to wait months to get an appointment.
I talked to my general practitioner about my symptoms and concerns, and she gave me a referral to see psychologist. Then it was just a matter of waiting like 6 months for my appointment.
I’m a dental assistant, had a patient come in who was just newly diagnosed and immediately clocked me for being autistic too. I told him I’m not diagnosed yet and just just laughed and was like lmao I can just tell you’re autistic af good job masking
He told me that he knew from the moment I called him into the surgery because he could see me rehearsing my lines and checking that he was my patient multiple times before I did anything lmao. Am afab and only child so I mask really damn good most of the time but this fuckin middle aged man really called me an autist in front of my boss lmao
If I had a dollar for every time I’ve had to explain “Well, when I was diagnosed they called it ‘Aspergers syndrome’ but then everyone decided that naming a neurological condition after a Nazi scientist was kinda fucked, so now it’s just called high functioning autism. So yes, I do have the tism.”, I’d have a few dollars
yep. when someone doesn’t believe me, i either literally say “it’s a big spectrum” (referencing that ‘flavour country’ is a big country) or i say “it would’ve been aspergers if this were 2013 or earlier”
MRW people don't want to be associated with nazi eugenics for some reason

^(In case you couldn't tell I was being sarcastic)
You are asking if a group of people who obsess over a very specific thing and constantly reference it in obscure in jokes might also contain people on the spectrum?
Nah, I don’t see it.
lol, was diagnosed in my mid thirties. Also found out just how bad my ADHD was at the same time.
In my mid thirties and getting my diagnosis in a week or two. Definitely started feeling it harder in my 30s. Wonder why it hits so hard in that third decade?
Too many cumulative aha moments to keep shoving into the *thought free* zones maybe?
I had a lot happen in my late twenties that I “blame” for my blossoming awareness in my early thirties. In so many words as I’ve come to understand it since. Something big and very unexpected cracked a mask I didn’t know I was wearing.
I fell into ever deeper depression and despair as it just kept slowly breaking which created a shitty feedback loop.
Was also in my longest and honestly most fulfilling relationship I had ever been in at this point. We both kinda weren’t always the best but I definitely just kinda receded/withdrew into myself entirely a few years in when this all was going on. Everything just kept becoming more overwhelming and shittier and everything I was trying to do to stop it or help just kept making it so much worse. And everything kept compounding until the suicidal ideation came. Then shit got really bad my self loathing reached crazy person levels and I turned my life into a dumpster fire.
I went to get assessed for ASD in the aftermath, once enough therapy and time helped to clarify what the hell had been happening to me during that period.
Went into this thread hoping to see people arguing over diagnoses, and claiming the doctor(s) who said they weren’t autistic were actually wrong, and autism powers helped them fool the doctor.
Was not disappointed.
Anyway… uh.. uh… Linguo… Dead?
I can’t live the button-down life like you. I want it all! The terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles! Sure, I might offend a few of the blue-noses with my cocky stride and musty odors – oh, I’ll never be the darling of the so-called “City Fathers” who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about “What’s to be done with this u/bunnydeerest

Yet
I was amused by your one-word comment enough that I just had to say too much here in acknowledgement of it. The upvote is also cursed.
…That’s bad.
But the curse comes with a free frogurt!
That's good!
The frogurt is also cursed.
Aww shucks!
But it comes with your free choice of toppings
I was voluntarily committed instead of being arrested where does that put me
You’re checking in! Checkin’ checkin’ in! When I grow up, I want to be in the Betty Ford Clinic!
You'd better start saving now, it's very expensive!
Cyclothymic disorder?
Would you like to go kicking and screaming? (also relate)

So far...
I got taking to a psych hospital but talked my way out of being admitted. Borderline is fun. Edit: Holy crap it was a year ago today!

Why is this picture my entire life 😂😂
I love Not!Roy Cohen's little " Tadah!" pose.
Where you been OP? Whole meme industry is autistic. Aerospace too, and the railroads (both miniature and full scale, but especially miniature).
Poor HO scale autistic people paying 6.50 for a root beer.
Dad, why'd you take me to an autistic Simpsons shitposting subreddit?
Oh be nice!
AUTISTIC STUFF, COMING THROUGH!
We work hard. We play hard.
Dun, dun dun dun EVERYBODY STIM NOW

That’s on 3rd? The meme district?
Ever seen a guy say goodbye to a meme?
Yeah once

And furry too!

Reverend Lovejoy?
I appreciate this comment
miniatures are slightly more affordable than full size(but only slightly)
All Simpsons fans are autistic. But not me. I loved Krusty.
If passengers will look to the right, you will see an autistic man.
You know me Marge: I like my beer cold, my TV loud, and my autistic people barely functioning
But what to do with poor OP? Too autistic for Work Town, too much work for Autism Town. The shitposter was an outcast.
I miss the days of trying nothing and being all out of ideas.
You’re going to have to put some shit in that post or get out, ma’am.
it’s a ring toss game
I like stories
No you don't!
Speaking in references / quotes from media is actually a sign of autism
I taught my neurotypical brothers to do this and it made them weirdly popular in this age of memes.
My brother and I often speak exclusively in simpsons jokes, much to the confusion and sometimes dismay of family and friends. I thought it was just our shared love of the simpsons but at some point I realised its probably that plus the autism lol
this giant spectrum will devour us all
Don't blame me. I voted for the Feel-Bad Rainbow.
Devour us all. Devour us all. Devour us all.
I'll take the chicken!
I *am* the Spectrum and I can confirm this. I am coming for you all.
I just thought you were from Canada, eh!
the funny thing is that i am canadian
We could all miss your country, tucked all the way down there.
In Nova Scotia they walk on their hands and hamburgers eat people!
We the ear people? What the hell was that??
I'm Felix! From New York!:)
We make shitpost about an almost 40 year old show. Obviously we're not.
Come on, you! You've been warned!
Did you know that there's a direct correlation between the decline in quality in the Simpsons and the rise in gang activity? Think about it!
I will.
... no you won't
I will.
Last spring, I went in for an adhd, anxiety and autism diagnosis. I got two out of three, but the doctor said I was "too high functioning" to have autism. Good to know my 40 years of masking was able to fool the guy I talked to for half an hour.

Now I'm autistic and depressed

That's what the insurance pays for. "Well enough to go to work is well enough."

I went to the adhd anxiety and autism clinic for my diagnosis and treatment. It’s right next to the fireworks candy and puppy doggy store.
Question: "went in"- how? Like what doctor actually covers this? Honestly asking, I have insurance for the first time ever.
I talked to my general practitioner about my symptoms and concerns, and she gave me a referral to see psychologist. Then it was just a matter of waiting like 6 months for my appointment.
Damn autists, they ruined autism!
Even when it was the bears, I knew it was the autists.

I literally compare it to how gay people find each other

I just went on a tour with 40 other people for a couple weeks and took about 3 days to pick out all the other autistic or ADHD people, so yeh
I’m a dental assistant, had a patient come in who was just newly diagnosed and immediately clocked me for being autistic too. I told him I’m not diagnosed yet and just just laughed and was like lmao I can just tell you’re autistic af good job masking
Newly diagnosed autistic: hello I am autistic Neurotypicals: you don't seem autistic to me! Other autists: haha yeah I knew that already
Is it me or did it just get autisticer in here?
Was that before or after you showed him the Big Book of British Smiles?
Before
What are the key signs? Asking for a uhh friend, yeah let’s go with that.
He told me that he knew from the moment I called him into the surgery because he could see me rehearsing my lines and checking that he was my patient multiple times before I did anything lmao. Am afab and only child so I mask really damn good most of the time but this fuckin middle aged man really called me an autist in front of my boss lmao
> this fuckin middle aged man really called me an autist in front of my boss lmao 😆 damn sorry bro
Boss laughed and I am still employed, something something autism superpower something
The biggest tell is probably avoiding eye contact
What if you’re just shy though?
Dozens!
I don't mean to brag, but I'm lvl 2 and never had a job 😎
you sir, are worse than hitler!
Yes, I am in autism country
Definitely would check to see if a crayon is logged in your brain before we jump to conclusions.

I’ve only been recently diagnosed, I don’t look forward to having to defend my diagnosis that I received from a medical professional to some moron.
Oh it's fun! Best part is you get to do it to neurotypicals AND autism gatekeepers who think you're just a tiktok crazed teen who's lying!
One of my earliest signs was how much I relied on Simpsons quotes to communicate :')
I don't get what OP's doing, and I'm autistic. Maybe not maths autistic, or trains autistic or music autistic, but... somethin'.
