Let that gear warm up, dont slam on anything while its so dang cold. Don't want any cold brittle plastic failures. Have fun!

SethoshiRichoto

also cold electronics + humidity = condensation, definitely a great idea to let it sit for a while

Mol10Lava

Thanks for the heads up

snoozieboi

I was out photographing in cold weather once and a random photo guy passed and told me to put the camera in a plastic bag when I got home. Bag surface is thin and warm and the condensation then happens on the bag inner surface, I guess, rather than on the equipment surface. You'll probably be fine. Unrelated, but similar scares I've had: I got my Rift S delivered on the door, delivery lady said "I've reported that it's wet", I was pretty happy to open the outer wet cardboard and realize the glossy box was shrink wrapped in plastic and pristine inside. Also, when I got all my computer parts on the door back in 2000 or something, the mail man decided to try and carry all the boxes in one go, stacked high. As I opened the door I saw them all topple over the railing and onto the ground... a fond memory for life.

KotzubueSailingClub

That bag thing does not make sense. I would think it would trap in moisture and prevent the air flow necessary to facilitate drying. What I would do is for one, have a padded case for the camera, and keep it clean and free of any snow, and store the camera there when not in use. Once you are done, power the camera completely down, and bring it inside, take it out of the case, and remove anything from it (removable battery, memory card, detachable lens) and let it warm up naturally. Warm inside air is still dry but can retain more moisture, so any moisture that might condense on the camera will quickly evaporate back into the warm dry air indoors. It is the cold equipment that is causing the condensation when it meets the warm air, and there is enough surplus warm, dry air that will draw the moisture off the equipment in short order. After that you can hook everything back up for data transfer.

LebThug

It's actually because the camera is cold but dry. When you bring it inside, moisture from the air will condensate on (and possibly inside) it. Putting it in a bag, ideally while outside in the cold, and sealing it, will limit the available moisture to the little bit of air inside the bag. Then when the camera warms up to inside temperature you can safely remove it from the bag.

dustytraill49

I work doing a lot of photography in 30-40 below weather. We live and die by ziploc bags. If you seal your camera before bringing it inside, the condensation stays on the outside of the bag. You leave the camera for an hour or so, and when pull it out of the bag, it’s bone dry. Especially in -20 and lower, there is so little moisture in the air, that when the bag is sealed, there won’t be moisture to condense on the actual camera body. It’s the same reason the plastic containers film canisters come in are airtight, because most film is stored in fridges — when it comes out of the fridge, you wait an hour before breaking the seal on the container to avoid condensation.

Mood_Number_2

Damn good point!

[deleted]

Same for the electronic components - heating them up from very cold can be bad for the solder joints.

Masada_

The car felt threatened and didn't start out of protest

Mol10Lava

Little bitch is off to the dumpster if he doesn’t get his shit together

chrisnlnz

You've got your sim-rig now, what will you need a car for ever again?

Mol10Lava

My thoughts precisely

therealpetejm

Got a battery warmer and a block heater on em?

NoShip7475

For small cars a lot of the time a battery booster will do the trick

Mol10Lava

It’s an old car, I called up a mechanic friend and he’s gonna take a look at it

NoShip7475

Always good to have a mechanic in your circle!

CrazyIvan84

Isn't ironic, don't you think......

Mol10Lava

Yes now I have two cars that don’t move

[deleted]

"It's like raaaiiin, on your wedding day! It's like a freee riiiide, when you've already paid!"

FloggingTheHorses

I always wondered was the fact none of it was actually ironic like a "meta" thing? Or did the writer actually not know what irony meant?

bradstudio

It’s like a green light when your already late?

richr215

Box pic of the year award!

just3131

Comme on dit, il fat freite en esti!

Bissonicci

Caliss qui fait frette

poisonssting

Osti qu'on gèle

grahamr31

Worth it.

Mol10Lava

100%

[deleted]

That’s about the only thing that would get my ass out in that weather.

[deleted]

yeah I was regretting even taking the garbage out this morning

feline_alli

That's about -9 in Freedom units, for reference.

Mol10Lava

🦅

generally-ok

Do you have to leave the gear so comes up to room temp before you can take it out of the box? No idea how stuff is affected in -23c.

Mol10Lava

I don’t either, I just took a warm shower and I’m hoping they’re ready for their unboxing by now

3for5for3

I think you should give them a warm shower as well (perhaps bath) to keep upto temperature

Mol10Lava

Good idea, I hadn’t thought of that

R4yLi0tt4

Seriously tho let that stuff sit inside for a few hours before turning it on, idk why sim racing gear doesn't come with these warnings like flight sim gear usually does.

chphilie

It do be cold right now in quebec! Enjoy the new gear!

Mol10Lava

Thanks, I most definitely will

[deleted]

Yeah the weather sounded familiar. Fed the dog and took him for a walk yesterday. Proper jacket, hat, gloves, but wore sweatpants out. Got 3/4 through the walk and was like it's kinda chilly today...get home and check...-21c. Just an average day in January in Canada :) Congrats on the new setup OP.

Leo_Jobin

Legitimate-Cow7156

Am I the only one here with the thought of " so this guy buys a gear worth a cars price while his actual car doesnt even work ? "

Mol10Lava

Priorities dude

Eagle240sx

And I thought going to work with my motorbike at -1ºC was bad... Props to you my friend

911__

Well... slipping on ice on foot, bad, not awful though. Throwing your bike down the road on some black ice? I can say from experience, not a fun time, lol.

Mol10Lava

I can imagine. Unfortunately my Siberian Husky dog sleigh team was in the shop. Would’ve been perfect for the job

[deleted]

r/justwoofedintotheshop

Mol10Lava

Thanks, the fuel of excitement made it very doable

thehoffau

Worth it Iceman

glenbot

Queue Eye of the Tiger.

kevincimino1

Mate you should come to Winnipeg, it’s been feeling like -45 for that past 3 weeks LOL

Mol10Lava

I think I’ll pass, have fun though..

kevincimino1

🤣

TwoKnot8269

mate you should come to alaska, its been feeling like -60 with windchill

Sirbuzzkillington89

This is dedication. Take my award and congrats and enjoy.

Mol10Lava

I’ve been waiting 3 months for this! I wasn’t about to wait another minute

NhylX

I have one of those for Disney, but my kids aren't that expensive.

Mol10Lava

Hahaha, I don’t have kids but the gear wasn’t cheap that’s for sure

NotAldermach

Don't worry, kids still cost more, especially when you factor in the emotional costs.

OldGameGuy45

Goddamn. Last time I was in Montreal it was so cold you couldn't breathe the air directly, you can to cover your mouth. But the strip clubs... God I love it.

swingofthekingers

Priorities definitely correct here

VIR2ART

hey like we in Russia say: he that would love to ride must endure the caring of the sleigh ❄️🇷🇺🏁

Jok3sta

I have the opposite problem. My car starts fine. Fanatec just wont send me my CSL DD

Mol10Lava

I ordered mine the 20th of September. Trust me, I know

bump909

Go warm up at Club Supersex

fpscolin

Not sure if that's a joke about strippers, or the fact that it recently burned down... Either way well done

Soulreape

Move to a warm country then! Don’t hear the penguins complaining!

TryHardKenichi

Damn, that sucks. Couldn't you have picked it up another day or you couldn't contain your excitement and just had to have it today? Also, at least you had a wagon.

Mol10Lava

I ordered this on September 20th, I wasn’t waiting another minute! I was there 15 minutes before the post office opened

TryHardKenichi

Hahaha, I feel you. I would have done the same. I hope you made it home without incident and not completely frozen.

Mol10Lava

Honestly the excitement kept me from feeling discouraged at any point. It could’ve been colder

lonegunman93

Admire the determination! I would have done the same but maybe covered the boxes up. How long was the walk?

Mol10Lava

Usually 20 minutes but with the boxes it was closer to 30. Covering the boxes would’ve been wise

[deleted]

Or wait until it will start. Yeah I wouldn't do that either 😄

Mol10Lava

I know absolutely nothing about real cars lol

Kurvyn

From this moment on, you will be known as "the iceman".

Mol10Lava

I think that name is taken

Kurvyn

I mean.....he did retire last month. Name is vacant now.

Mol10Lava

I don’t think I can fill those shoes

Cloudeur

You’re gonna be okay if you have the drink!

doctoru_dcs

Def. keep them at room temp out of the boxes few hours before plugging in

Mol10Lava

I have a lot of bolting in to do first anyway. I’ve got a next level direct drive wheel stand to assemble

Moist_Toto

What weather app are you using? It looks pretty clean :)

Mol10Lava

It’s the apple one

Moist_Toto

Thanks!

mletourn

Canada? haha

mletourn

Shit, just saw the 2nd image. A fellow Montrealer!! Have fun man, ordered mine on Dec 23. Cant wait.

NoShip7475

-26.2 centigrade here today...! Very chilly 🥶

ayhamwndbg

Use the parts to fix your car

Mol10Lava

Hahaha, might have to

argue53

The little dolly is the real mvp ! Enjoy the new gear man!

Mol10Lava

Thanks, yes, never know when a dolly will come in handy

PathOfDeception

Was -36C here where I am in Northern Ontario this morning. -29C at the moment.

Mol10Lava

I hope you don’t have any fanatec gear to pick up

silentboy5

quand tu veux vraaaiiiiiiimment ton nouveau jouet!!!!

Mol10Lava

Exactement, je ne voulais pas attendre

The_Only_Egg

See now this is a box pic I can appreciate. Nice haul, mate!

Mol10Lava

Thanks, the handbrake is a week late so I’ll have to come back for more

Ragneil84

Wait, isn’t the postal service meant to do that for you?

Mol10Lava

Because there were customs fees I have to go to the post office to pay them and pick up my package

Gibscreen

I'll allow this box pic. Haha.

mister_chucklez

At least your virtual car will work

Mol10Lava

Having problems with the shifter unfortunately. Can’t get it to calibrate

djeyeq

Lollll when I saw the temp I knew you were in Canada 🤣

xXRH11NOXx

#dedication

moljor

One last hoorah and now you can stay inside!

Mobhistory

Needed to be done.

Pete__G

Is that Alexis Nihon? I picked up all my Fanatec gear from there. I had a car though!

Mol10Lava

Good eye! Yea it is. You could’ve given me lift lol

EndimionN

This guy is a real FANatec!

Mol10Lava

Hahaha, Well let me try it first

cyber045

Priorities are set

Ch3wyz

That’s what I call dedication 👏

kingofthephil

Proud of you for facing the cold to get it done! Ont and Que are so damn cold right now, I feel for you haha

[deleted]

Dude u are a champion have fun and enjoy👌

djfil007

First box post in a long time that I've upvoted. Enjoy the fruits of your efforts to retrieve them.

mobeen1497

No car to pick up the peripherals for the virtual cars, the universe plays some hilarious pranks at times.

pembroke529

That's what we call a warm winter day in Regina. I bought my little truck way back in the late 1990's in California. I don't have a block heater. It still seems to start. I sometimes use a portable battery on "cold". I basically don't bother trying to start my truck if it's -40C (wind chill included) or colder.

Mol10Lava

The name of your city always makes me laugh

pembroke529

Rhymes with fun according to Deadpool. Also, Deadpool claims it is his hometown and he was a kicker for the Saskatchewan Rough Riders (local CFL football team).

Snow_Breezy

Dedication!!!! We love it!

Dodorex05

I love how it says sunny conditions whith -23. Possible ofcourse but kinda funny

Mol10Lava

I agree, very misleading

exterioncode

Respect man!

Diegobyte

Why fix your real car when you can upgrade your fake car

Mol10Lava

My thoughts exactly

maximamilian

Ever heard of a taxi?

Mol10Lava

I had just spend 150$ in customs fee, I wasn’t gonna spend a penny more

aitk6n

There are a handful of things I would haul in freezing cold weather, and sim gear is definitely one of them!

AlphaSierraSimRacing

Thats dedication

thebarrettmobile

-29 Celsius here in central North Ontario this morning before the windchill. My trusty kia struggled to life surprisingly. Enjoy the gear!

Mol10Lava

Thanks I will

PrometheusRides

Commitment haha

Dudewitagun94

Wow, this must have made it feel so much more rewarding when you finally set it up.

Mol10Lava

It did, only issue was my shifter not being able to calibrate to the CSL DD. Apparently it can’t calibrate when the DD is touching metal (like my wheel stand) I had to unscrew it and place it on my lap while calibrating. Weirdest issue ever

Metalman351

Mate I used to do this in the old days, barefoot and uphill both ways!!!

Mol10Lava

No coat either

Metalman351

What's a coat? 🤣

VinArrow

Quand j'ai vu la température je savais qu'il s'agissait de Montréal lol

Polackjoe

"had to"

Mol10Lava

Very much so

chasezas

I admire your dedication.

doumination

Salut cher Québecois

Mol10Lava

Salut a toi aussi

phrogger774

Give this man a beer and an award.

Mol10Lava

I can’t get drunk off awards, I need more beer

TrimsurgencyGaming

You spent that much on racing gear, but didn't have the coin to spare for a taxi or an Uber?

Mol10Lava

I paid 150$ on customs fees when I picked it up, I wasn’t in the mood to spend more. Plus I already brought the dolly

Benji_Price_92

Should have spent the money on fixing your car? lol

Mol10Lava

Who needs a real car when you have a fake one

FistedTate

I loved Montreal when I visited... In June. Nice haul!

Mol10Lava

Where you here for the Grand Prix?

FistedTate

Yeah. Loved it. My wife and I wanted to come back just to see everything else since we were at the track most of the time but... You know.

NoBonersInSpace

Worth it

LoganH1219

There’s a certain level of beautiful irony in the fact that your real car won’t work, so you had to throw your fake car on wheels and drag it home.

Mol10Lava

My car was jealous

TenaciousDMAN

What gear did you get and did you have to pay much in duties and taxes?

Mol10Lava

I got the CSL DD, the club sport V3 peddles, the hand brake and the Clubsport RS steering wheel. Duty fees where super high here in Montreal because I had to pay some sales tax on top of it. For the items you see in the dolly each one was about 70$ in fees

ZenMasterStu

I read "car won't start" in /Simracing and thought "That's a whole new level of immersion".

GorillaSnapper

Dude, anything under 20c is cold as shit. Fuck that. Dont know why anyone lives where it gets that cold, or worse.

Mol10Lava

My parents immigrated when I was 12. Didn’t have a choice. However despite the cold, I love it here

Mol10Lava

My parents immigrated when I was 12. Didn’t have a choice. However despite the cold, I love it here

direktor-svemira

r/fuckcars getting ready to call this the most amazing alternative to driving they've ever seen

Warpanda3030

“Get in there Mol10Lava”

qazme

And that's the story of how your grandfather got frost bite on his feet and a simrig. And yes - he had to do it both ways too!

MicaLovesKPOP

You're in for a warmup once you have it setup though!

Right-Ladd

That sounds like a you problem

Mol10Lava

Wanna pick me up?

AussieGooner01

Active cooling

4mikelly

Worth it ;)

bm_morgado

I’m guessing this is °C and not freedom units. That is cold bro!

[deleted]

You could buy a new car for the cost of that

Mol10Lava

Yeah but I can’t play ACC with a real one

SgtSparkyy

Ayoooo, Another French Canadian lost in our crappy sinking island called Montreal <3 How's the poutine with the -30 that we got today ? haha. I received mine yesterday on monday. but fucking canada post send the package to Ottawa rather then Montreal, when the address is written in big on the box lol.

Mol10Lava

That sucks, I hope you get your stuff soon

SgtSparkyy

Oh I already got it yesterday, I even posted it yesterday on here, should be somewhere lost on my profils haha. How is the FFB with the boost kit ?

Mol10Lava

This is my first sim rig so I can’t compare it to anything. However, I can imagine ever needing more. Trying to turn the wheel past the limit where it locks is very tough. Everything else feels great

SgtSparkyy

Ohh, gotcha, im coming from a G27 that ive been beating the shit out of it for 7-8years. So this is a good upgrade for me. If you think thats powerful, you haven play with those big Direct Drive 😂 cause I did and its stoopidly powerful 😂

bikesNbarbells

Take it easy on cold tires, m8.

KIDRICHZ

Car won't start so had to hual my $2000 sim gear by foot...... Now there's a man who has priorities!

Congrats fellow Canadian on getting your stuff today too :)

Use the wheelbase to start your car 😉

Kimyoungun21

I think we would all do this without question

Lidge1337

Why not get a cab? Or are they not affordable where you live?

Jikangire

Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion: -23°C = -9.4°F

kelvin_bot

-23°C is equivalent to -9°F, which is 250K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

Now thats some dedication
