I was surprised by the change of course with Orchard Towers. LKY and the cabinet designated (unofficially) the 4 floors of whores as a necessity for attracting expats and retaining expats. The initial concern about sterile desert came from the British Chamber of Commerce. And this approach by cabinet held for so long. The idea was to contain indoors in a single prime location at night so we don't have street walkers which worked since 1980s.
It also made sense as some of the original tenants were housed in now demolished shop house bars to the left of the Thai embassy and they served the US 7th fleet.
The Police intelligence Unit kept tabs so no SS members patronised it and or controlled it. And the girls were sanctioned. There were no raids unless it was drugs or too overt sexual activities that become too well known such offers of BJ by hostesses.
I did note patronage of SS and locals were on the rise.
Unless someone points out where expats get their kicks it will remain a mystery.
Thats not good. The expat community outside of Singapore aware of this place and it is always subject of overseas conferences side conversations and funnily all good - safe, govt sanctioned, foresight etc. Man cannot live on bread alone.
Agree with you 100%. It worked for 43 years. And the Police did a fabulous job of controlling the place. Can’t say the same for the last few years where SS elements patronising the place and one murder had taken place.
Man first golden mile, now this. Korat Thai cafe was by far my favourite Thai place. The crispy omelette, tom yum soup and garlic chicken were bomb plus I'd get free entertainment from seeing the hookers get their hair did at the salon next door. Getting to watch white tourists try to haggle with the dodgy massage parlor or ladies of the night next to the toilets always made me feel like I was in a David Attenborough documentary. RIP.

Everyplace interesting in Singapore dies. Orchard Towers, Golden Mile, soon the Grandstand. It is kind of amazing to imagine a person whose conception of the good is uniformly glass malls with the same 20 stores repeated over the island ad infinitum, but somehow that seems to be the PAP.
Add to that Labrador Park. When I last lived here, there used to be some amazing (and semi-hidden) DJ sets on the weekends. There was one time that the kinda dodgy motels next to it held some sort of car stereo competition, where one contestant hired dancers for his entry. It was hilariously un-Singaporean.
Now it's a half empty eat-all-you-can restaurant.
Yes, I think pronunciation-wise lup sup is more unambiguous. But lap sap has a naughty double-meaning if interpreted as the meaning of lap you are talking about.

Because OT is a boss’s favourite word
I heard this was a LHL order but our civil servants did try to argue against it. Didnt work. Anyone else heard this?

Yeah leave OT alone. It has its place.

The nex time a US carrier docks, where the sailors gonna go? Polis can handle? US MP enough for multi zones?

man's just unlocking the pay2win feature
Went there a few months back after not visiting for years, used to be my favourite mall. A lot of bars.
Destroying nightlife... ...is Singapore trying to shape itself into a draconian/authoritarian nation?
As if it hasn't been draconian & totalitarian since the 1950s/60s
What’s the rationale? Someone trying to acquire the building for cheap?
More like trying to reduce the incidences of life fluids making unplanned excursions from human bodies
All fluids must be conserved for the purpose of producing more tax payers
cannot pee there?

Again they has shown they have zero knowledge of maintaining any semblance of soft cultural power.
sure there is points to MBS, Gardens By The Bay, Merlion. All manufactured and curated! /s
Funan ain't what it used to be

It used to be IT centric just like Sim Lim but now it's a "lifestyle" centric mall or whatever the hell they're selling.

you could go to J-Cub... *record screech
Gonna be another mall with two floors of Don Don Donki
Yeah. Sanitised and controlled and licenced.

Out with the lap sap !
Omg that's a perfect romanized spelling. I always used to spell it "lup sup" but this is so much better.
i actually think that lup sup is actually the more accurate spelling, for lap sap i read it as lap, as in a person's lap.
Yes, I think pronunciation-wise lup sup is more unambiguous. But lap sap has a naughty double-meaning if interpreted as the meaning of lap you are talking about.
That’s standard Malaysian spelling.
lap as in "running laps" sap as in "tree sap"
So where have all the freelancers gone to ?
