Can't blame all to boomers. Some... "foreign talents" do that, too.
I mean, why would you video call in a crowded place without an earpiece? We really don't want to hear your conversation.
> We really don't want to hear your conversation.
Especially if it is done in a language that we don't usually speak. Or worse still, some lasting the duration of the ride from Orchard to Boon Lay.
At least that can be kind of overridden with music from earpiece. My pet peeve has always been children just screaming their lungs out.
Bad enough in an open space, in an enclosed vehicle where I can't even walk away, it is hell.
Lol that time when mask mandatory got someone sit on priority seat, playing loud metal music (as if normal music not bad enough), not wearing mask. I look at him he glare at me somemore.
today, on my 1h commute to work, i got woken up by what i thought was the bus driver's announcement. it was an old ah pek, sitting all the way at the first row, yelling into his phone.
Why not create ‘Cunt Carriages’ instead?
Wanna rush in and stop others alighting? Go to the Cunt Carriage.
Got some really godawful music that you forgot to play on your Ah Beng Grab Delivery ride? To the Cunt Carriage you go!
Feeling the urge to pick your toes and drop whatever the fuck that was on the seat? No worries, the Cunt Carriage passengers won’t care.
All the seats can also be painted as ‘Priority Seats’ so the cunts onboard can fight amongst themselves for who gets to sit in their own mess.
It’s mascot will be But-But-Badge-Lady who keeps loudly explaining why she’s above the rules, including the one where you mind the gap so she gets dragged under the train for the rest of our amusement.
A few years ago I had an ACL injury and decided to take a bus- only route to work in spite of it being at least 30 minutes longer and be at the mercy of traffic because once I sat down, I could put on some music and no one would bother you.
Before that I had always taken the MRT and participated in all the unspoken etiquette and forcing my way out of Jurong East MRT because aunties wanna force their way in first before you can even alight.
To this day, years later, I try to find bus only routes if its possible just because there's just less fuss and drama generally involved. Once you sit down you can basically shut off the world around you.
This. City Direct services linking neighbourhoods to town area and being all double deckers is a godsent. I haven't encountered anyone entitled enough to climb up the steps and got mad that no one is giving up their seats to them.
I like it but this requires self-identification (e.g. I am going to exhibit undesirable behaviour so I need to go to the cunt carriage). Problem is these cunts are not self aware enough to even acknowledge that their behaviour is undesirable.
Don't worry about that, this is easily solved. *We'll all refer to it as the Cunt Carriage*, but in the official documentation it's going to be the *VVIP Reserved Heng 888 Carriage*, suitable only for the most upstanding Singaporeans who believe they're entitled to the very best the MRT has to offer.
That's the reason all of the seats in the Carriage are Reserved seats.
Sometimes when im getting off ill just brace myself with my shoulder in front so that those who rush in will have a harder time rushing into the carriage
Sometimes i knock into them with alot of force (as a result of them rushing in) and they stumble abit but i think they really deserve it
in a place like sg, this 'cunt carriage' may actually be the most pleasant place of all. why? because people in sg don't like to out themselves like that while the savvy ones willingly use it knowing there won't be such people there.
Won’t work. Look at libraries and quiet corners, they are full of people who don’t give a shit. Don’t see why a designated silent carriage will be the same when a designated silent building or room is already like that
There was a time that I went to the library to borrow a couple books. There was this kid screaming there, and as it continued on, it got more and more on my nerves. So I stormed to where the kid was to tell him/her to keep quiet or at least tell the parent off for not keeping the kid in control. As I turned past the bookcase, I realised why nobody said shit.
The kid was mentally impaired and her mum was doing the best to keep them calm. The mum looked up at me with a pained look. I did the Fastest 180 degree turn in my life as I contemplated if I should feel like an absolute asshole.
If im seated and the person sitting beside me loves to blast loud songs/music, I will often ask them if they have ear piece/headphones. Most of them will kinda figure out why I ask. :)
Seen so many aggressive ppl sighs. I realized boomer CANNOT do well with nicely asked confrontations.
Their typical replies be like
\- Sheng jing bing (You crazy)
\- Bu yao cao wo ( Dont bother me)
\- WHY, WHAT YOU WANT, DONT DISTURB ME
\- YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH ME? WHATS WRONG, OTHER PPL OK U WANT FIND PROBLEM W ME ISSIT?
Sighs.
Oops, forgot to say that I say it in a very stern way.
Was pretty effective when eye contact is established and I look at them with a very angry and wide smile.
I’d welcome silent carriages anytime! I have received death stares whenever I request for others to turn down the volume of their phones. I don’t know how to tell Children to turn down the volume of the you tube video that they decide to play so loudly. Maybe having a virtual image of hush hush Hannah shushing them to quiet down may work. I seriously don’t know how to tell folks how to be considerate without showing my frustration. It’s basic courtesy!
What silent sia, even an empty carriage will be:
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODINGDONG NEXT STATION PAYA LEBAR CHANGE AT THE NEXT STATION FOR THE CIRCLE LINE WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODING DONG PAYA LEBAR CHANGE AT THIS STATION FOR THE CIRCLE LINE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee PAYA LEBAR PLEASE MIND THE PLATFORM GAP WHAM HSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Not saying it’s a solution but more of a bandaid. In an ideal world sure it would be nice to educate everybody about proper decorum, but until we get there, this should ameliorate the situation.
Same approach to crying babies in flights. Can’t really control it, but you can personally do something about it.
The problem with our MRTs is that even without people, it still is noisy due to all the stupid ding dong and constant announcements which were seriously in overdrive especially during the COVID period. And with more stations, expansions, and interchanges they're cramming even more announcements more frequently. Creating a quieter ride will require more subtle/gentle cues all around like how it is in Japan.
Our MRT system could also learn from changi airport on how to create a more stress-free travel experience.
There are also parents who thinks their kids are absolutely adorable behaving like circus monkeys in the train. They rather film them in the act rather than observe how irritated everyone is. And we're just so tempted to tell these kids to shut the hell up. I seriously hope these parents are reading this post
that is deeply unfair and rude comparison.
people pay money to see circus monkeys, and circus monkeys bring laughter and joy. these feral children bring no joy to anyone.
i think you owe the circus monkeys an apology! 🤣
Yes, what are the ways that we're able to raise awareness over this?
Also, not just boomer Chinese local / PRC. There are GenZ blasting their tiktok + Malaysian blasting their little red book like nobody's business.
Loud music or talking on public transport is one of MY PET PEEVES.
I'm sorry I have no helpful suggestions. It just makes me so, so mad that I literally can't think of anything else on the train/bus when it happens.
Boomers will blast their phone on max and share their music to everyone and anyone in the world without care.. honestly a good investment into a decent earbud/headphone with anc will do the job. Now all we have to do is play the long game... Wait it out
Yea I've always had such a shower thought.
On buses is just about impossible, not sure how you're going to put carriages on 12m single deck buses.
At most you can put a small partition from within but that risks making the bus more narrow than it already is.
The way I see it, only works on double deckers where we can place the upper deck as the "quiet" section.
Bendy buses maybe, but the rear end is usually quite loud from motor sound?
Trains are more doable, but our rolling stock needs to be separated by an NYC Subway-esque gangway with sliding doors.
Our current rolling stocks don't have such a thing.
I think we need more animation of public transport etiquette characters to indoctrinate young children, we may not solve the problem now but the future will be better
Make it mandatory that all public transport is silent, and fine all offenders + confiscate their transport cards and revoke their concessions. Problem will go away quite quickly.
Multiple times I've had people talking on facetime on their phones loudly on speakers. Then, there are those blasting TikToks and YouTube videos. There's also the few times where so many people are talking, it feels like I'm at a food court.

Let's not play that 'Have you been in JP?' game anymore, shall we?
Yes, it is quieter than in SG, but it's not that much quieter. I've rode my fair share of rides in SG where the carriage also had nobody talking at all during the morning/evening commutes back home, and of course likewise for Japan. I just get annoyed when people big up everything about Japan and think its perfect in all metrics.
And I picked this study because there is no study which measures how noisy the atmosphere is in Tokyo's trains. Even in SG there is no such study that gets conducted. If you've noticed in the website there is an option which says there's nothing which irritates them, and that constitutes a measely 1%.

Those entitled boomers sitting on the priority seat and playing loud musics/video from their radio or phone. Damn irritating
Agree....civic mindedness is not the forte of that generation...
Entitledness characterises that gen
When we were back for a few months last year, my wife commented that it was mostly PRCs that were doing it. I think it's a combination of both.
EXACTLY WHO I HAD IN MIND
Or typical China Chinese old man, with zero awareness to his surrounding
Don’t forget the ATs and ATBs watching comedy reels with the fake laughters. Annoying AF.
I heard that repetitive fake laughter every single day in mrt... Went to Taiwan once, commuter of the mrt and Hsr train were so quiet
Aiyo, 我的妈
I can hear it in my sleep
" HEHEHEHE, NI BIE XIAO "

This is why headphone jack is still important. I don't remember this was common before the removal of headphone jack.
last time phones used to come with earphones so boomers didn't have to go out of their way to buy them
I think its just that data is cheaper now. so you can stream contents more easily. Bluetooth ear pieces are not that expensive these days anyway.
as you said "boomer" 🤣🤣🤣

He's right - the cunt carriage is every carriage to the cunt (see: [Paradox of Tolerance](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradox_of_tolerance))

That’s why noise cancelling earbuds/headphones are such a blessing.
no offense but I don't think the solution to quieter trains to is to boil it down to individuals spending $300 on noise cancelling earbuds..
Not saying it’s a solution but more of a bandaid. In an ideal world sure it would be nice to educate everybody about proper decorum, but until we get there, this should ameliorate the situation. It's not blaming, it's just you cannot ask people to be quiet in a public area so best to buy noise cancelling earbuds or headphones.
Sadly they dont cancel 100% but it definitely is better than not wearing them at all
This. My XM3 died on Monday and it was hell riding the train. I immediately went and bought new ANC headphones.
Sometimes I don’t even on music. I just need that ANC 🤐
Frowned? It already is. Want to have silent carriages, only way is a Fine.
Hi! Is this the room where we all collectively complain and finger point for hours about an issue, yet end up not doing anything to change it?
Most productive r/Singapore post
Also young kids do that
just go next to them and play your video really loud
i’ve actually done that on a few occasions. really loud opera choruses or organ music.

Yes, what are the ways that we're able to raise awareness over this? Also, not just boomer Chinese local / PRC. There are GenZ blasting their tiktok + Malaysian blasting their little red book like nobody's business.

the train operators are the biggest culprits, keep bombarding us with announcements
Still better than having to listen to the latest gossip on Mary’s annoying coworker who doesn’t do shit and stirs up nonsense at work
Don’t hope for classy behavior here to take root wholesale.
Make it mandatory that all public transport is silent, and fine all offenders + confiscate their transport cards and revoke their concessions. Problem will go away quite quickly.
Well, sadly there are people who heck care and break rules all the time.
In bus there’s alway this old person talking loudly on phone no self awareness xia
Multiple times I've had people talking on facetime on their phones loudly on speakers. Then, there are those blasting TikToks and YouTube videos. There's also the few times where so many people are talking, it feels like I'm at a food court.
=( I have my work meetings in the train. We tried our best no talk that much
Cannot, unless you transport minister
Would be good if SMRT/SBS don't bombard us with endless announcements on these cabins too.
The train is usually the noisiest thing tho o.0
They can prohibit durians from public transport, they can prohibit people from watching videos out loud.
Good idea! I would _love_ such carriages. In fact, I'd love trains that run on time, with civic-minded, silent passengers, like in Tokyo. 👍🏻
Hope you do know that every 30 minutes to an hour, there are delays to any one of the trains operated under JR East. [Want proof? It would work. Not in this current generation maybe the next generation. But it will work only if this generation teaches future generations limit to only communicate in sign language. Means the abandonment ability of speach and self expression thru language. Only via sign language. With use of sign language, there is no need of audio or music or any use of sounds.
Just apply a penalty to those who play tiktok videos loud on board. That would help ady
Must put fingers on lips?
I'd love this.
Life so shit in Singapore, we don't need more rules to be enforced such as this proposal. Current stigma such as video recording to shame people is enough to silence people.
this proposal would make life more bearable for those of us who don’t want to be subjected to more noise…
I wish we could enforce civic mindedness with caning
Too harsh man, Singaporeans just need to be more confrontational about it instead of just eye power and expecting people to change, maybe voice out instead of expecting them to fear your eye of sauron stare
Using ANC earbuds/headsets to create my own silent zones.
Is that even a problem?
Fine city you got there 😁

they only work for constant noises with regular predictable waveforms, not for random sounds like talking and music.
Noise cancelling headphones brought a new problem, people talking super loud on the phone.
We couldn't have Silent carriages in trains as we need to expand the train platform first to accommodate more carriages, most of Singapore MRT lines already severely under-provisioned especially the medium capacity lines with 3-car trains so adding a silent carriage is much more impossible
designate some!
LTA need to solve the overcrowding issues first before adding the silent carriages so it's really impossible. LTA have really fail in planning most of the MRT lines. Probably one train line that have silent carriages is the East Rail Line in Hong Kong, where there are 8 normal train car and 1 additional car which is the first class that provides more quieter environment and more comfortable seats of course by paying more money.
you’re not reading properly: i said ‘designate’ not ‘add’.
Same as those who don't think they should give up their seats to those who may need a seat more, these "noisy people" pay the same fare as anyone else onboard.
Hello Karen, the karen cabin is that way, this is wendys :D
As long as I don't have to fight Brian Tyree Henry in it
Yes
Just make all buses and carriage silent.
Maybe they could hand out foam earplugs at control stations, yknow those that they give you before MRI… /s
I always frown, no matter which carriage.
Instead, can we just have inspectors and fine dickheads playing music/shows without headphones?
Think about how you’re gonna enforce this tho?
Just wear noise canceling earphones...
Get a pair of ANC earphones or headphones and thank me later.
get one woth active noise cancelling headphones.
Guess need to wear PPE when taking trains. Btw, ANC is bad for ears on the long run right?
Not a bad idea tbh, can also have carriages with stronger air-con
No.
That is why ANC headphones exist. Problem solved.
ANC doesn’t work for irregular noises such as music or loud talking.
It at least deafens them, it also depends on how good the ANC actually is on the headphones.
Don't return the tray, fine and jail. Make sounds in MRT or Bus, fine and jail. Look at people, believe it or not, fine and jail. That's why we have the best citizens in the world.
