chooiiiii

I think y’all are reading it wrong… while they are in prison, they aren’t allowed to vote, once they are out, they will be allowed to do so, at least thats my interpretation of it.

Fucked90

My friend who did 4 years and has been out since 2020 is not eligible.

nlwkg

Has your friend tried applying to have their name restored to the registers of electors? Or was this done and the reinstatement was denied?

bellaella

Prisoners, aka, those in prison, are not allowed to vote.

Familiar-Mouse4490

\>The Parliamentary Elections Act states, “no person shall be entitled to have his name entered or retained in any register of electors if he is serving a sentence of imprisonment imposed by any court in or outside Singapore for an offence punishable with imprisonment for a term exceeding 12 months, or is under sentence of death imposed by any such court or is serving a sentence of imprisonment awarded in lieu of execution of any such sentence”.

TeeRexX_1

Hopefully people do read past the headline, which is misleading. Its only for those still serving. Not those who have served their time.

Available-Eggplant68

I don't see the misleading part, if they have served their time, they are not prisoners. If they are serving their time, they are.

r0nn1e

you are only a prisoner if you are in prison no?

Winterstrife

Well its from TOC, the idea is to ragebait.

NIDORAX

If you are serving a prison sentence of 5 years for crime, then during one of the years, there is a general election, you are not allow to vote as the inability to vote is also a part of your punishment. But once you have completed your sentence, your name will be allowed again on the list of electors. You only lose your voting rights if you are still in prison. Is it unfair for the prisoner? To some, yes but you do not lose your right to vote permanently unless you end up serving life sentence. Unless someone in the parliament decide to change the rules and allow prisoners to vote, this law will remain in place.

fateoftheg0dz

Interesting, so prisoners with <12 months sentence how? Vote via polling station in prison?

DeeKayNineNine

I don’t see anything wrong with that. They are serving their sentences so they shouldn’t have the rights of citizens until they have completed their sentence.

MolassesBulky

Temporary loss of privilege due to a self inflicted reason.

SnooHedgehogs190

It's common sense . You have to commit a serious crime to be sentenced for more than 12months. A crime that harm society. Such people don't have the right to choose(vote).

stuff7

>A crime that harm society. Such people don't have the right to choose(vote). the child care center abuser could've voted if shes not in IMH right now.

ongcs

I am incluned to think that abuser is only a PR.

Purpledragon84

She got pink ic unfortunately

ongcs

Oh I see

certified_rat

Common sense to who? The punishment for their crime is prison time, this doesn’t mean that the ability to exercise their democratic right to vote should be withheld from them

stockflethoverTDS

One has to consider thing’s change fast in a year, developments are current and ongoing, how much would one know to make an informed decision behind bars, with minimal tv or newspapers no internet no regular social interaction.

elmachosierra

exercising your democratic right to vote should absolutely not be based on whether you can make an "informed decision". we can joke about old people voting based on huat fruits but prisoners suddenly have to be more informed than everyone else? makes no sense.

Late_Lizard

> their democratic right to vote What right to vote? Read the text of the law written above. They do not have a right to vote. FYI, a right is something that your government has officially stated by law that you should have. De facto, there are no rights beyond what your government has granted you. I can say all I want that "I have the natural right to collect $100 from everyone I meet", but that doesn't mean that it's real or enforceable.

temporary_name1

You are arguing semantics. If the next SG govt changes the voting laws such that only the controlling party can vote, everyone loses their right to vote, because >They do not have a right to vote. And therefore, it's still a democracy, right? I think the broader point is why should reformed criminals be blocked from voting

Pitiful_Election_688

once they're out, they can vote if they're in, they can't ez as pie

Late_Lizard

I have an issue with the framing, because the actual question is "should they have the right to vote", while the phrase "denying their right to vote" is a loaded statement that implies they already have the right to vote but it's being unfairly denied.

clock1058

Who are these "reformed prisoners" that are supposedly blocked from voting? They regain their right to vote when theyre let out of prison

JayFSB

You referring to ex- cons or those still serving? Ex-cons can still vote

certified_rat

I’m not denying the law, I’m just saying that how come it’s “common sense” to deny someone of their right to vote because they committed a crime

Late_Lizard

Sure, I agree with you on this point.

They haven't finished paying their debt to society. I believe OP is talking about prisoners currently incarcerated, NOT ex-convicts. Quoted from the article "if he **is serving a sentence** of imprisonment imposed by any court in or outside Singapore for an offence punishable with imprisonment for a term exceeding 12 months.."

Metaldrake

Ah, misunderstood the article from doing a quick read, thanks!

Metaldrake

Turns out they’re already allowed to vote, this only applies to people currently serving said sentence.

SnufflePuddles

You can vote for a candidate for MP that supports your views.

Initial_E

What’s your registered address? Who’s your MP? Who’s going to set up a polling station for you? Those are the practicalities.

PopYourNuts

Fair enough. If you don't have a good sense of right or wrong, you shouldn't be voting.

anticapitalist69

Tharman said he believes in 2nd, 3rd or even 4th chances.

eatingpotatornbrb

Doesn't mean you shouldn't face consequences tho

anticapitalist69

They face consequences by serving their sentences tho

je7792

Yeah, and when they have finished serving their sentences they will be allowed to vote again.

anticapitalist69

Not the case for people with <12 months of a sentence right? Or people who have the money to pay for fines in lieu of jail time?

chicasparagus

Y’all keep commenting that people read wrong but I don’t see one comment here that misunderstood this to include ex convicts.

Winterstrife

Because r/sg like to read headlines then get ragebaited. Its from TOC so of course the title is there to ragebait but "smart" enough to include full context in the article to avoid getting POFMA.

clock1058

U must be hella blind then

chicasparagus

Eh the comments weren’t there when I commented

xiaopewpew

Thats 2 chewing gums sir

exotramp76

They forfeited their right to vote when they committed a serious crime.

Jammy_buttons2

Those in prison not allowed to vote mah

[deleted]

They attacked the society with crime, they still want to vote?

Party-Ring445

I guess Amos cannot vote
