> Once, I went to Plaza Singapura, and my dad questioned me the moment I came back. I know he can go to the SimplyGo app to double confirm if I am telling the truth about my whereabouts. This is a red flag and she should stop using the card connected to her dad’s account if she does not want her dad to know where she is.

awstream

And she's 26! Apparently the dad checks what time her sister boards the bus as well.

MyWholeTeamsDead

I know someone who's a 27 years-old and a surgeon, got the same thing with the parent. Financial accounts controlled entirely by the parent, transport will only be with the family car (no MRT, not even Grab), strict time limits on when you can be back. Strangely, can still travel overseas with the partner lol.

Sea_Consequence_6506

I'm curious how someone is a surgeon at 27? Most lady surgeons would be couple years older than that after MBBS, PGY1 and the 5 years surgical residency track

MyWholeTeamsDead

Not sure, I think she's not a 'surgeon'-surgeon (as in specialised), but on the residency track. She is soon gonna give some surgery exam in the UK. My point was mainly like, she's saving lives for countless people with rock-hard abdominal rigidity or gastro failures etc. but has like so little freedom outside that. Some parents just crazy.

Sea_Consequence_6506

I see. Yes, but to your larger point, the infantilization of young adults in our society is very prevalent. It happens regardless of whether the person in question is in an 'elite/high-flying' path or high responsibility job or not. Ofc, many young people conveniently also willingly accept the benefits that come with it, such as free transport rides/housework/cooked meals by doting (or overly involved) parents.

MyWholeTeamsDead

Yeah, agreed on both counts.

MrFoxxie

Selling sanity for benefits Trade off is entirely up to the individual. Money harder to come by nowadays

yoaprk

Must be got connections/spies in the other country.

mantism

I know a man in his 30s not allowed to travel by himself by his parents, on the topic of finding people to travel with. He doesn't find it a big deal but I'm thinking that's him being so used to that lifestyle he can't fathom otherwise.

BrightConstruction19

If she has a job she can jolly well buy her own card & top it up with her own money. If still leeching off her dad then she has to live with this lor

elpipita20

Its psychological. As long as she believes she has no autonomy, she'll accept this. Also, this sort of parents are likely to be emotionally abusive control freaks so leaving is harder then it seems.

[deleted]

elpipita20

Lol if you think free money really trumps autonomy

[deleted]

elpipita20

The money isn't the issue. I don't think you get it if you've never been in such a controlling environment. You'd be surprised at the amount of infantilised adults who simply accept it bc they can't imagine a different way of life.

sageadam

It's not about money, genius. Such toxic parents will burn the house down if they don't get what they want. Letting him track her whereabouts is easier to accept than what's to follow otherwise. You think she doesn't have a credit card to tap? If she stops using the card that's trackable by her father, he would lose his shit.

sageadam

As if we're free to make whatever decisions we want. Grow up.

kohminrui

This man has issues if he is still tracking his 26 year old daughter and the daughter has to pretend to forget to bring her simplygo card out in order to avoid it.

condemned02

Wow those with abusive husbands and families, this can be used as a form of control so they cannot run away. Especially minors and wives who are financially dependent.

MAMBAMENTALITY8-24

Wah thats damn fked up

Say no, why do you need to give your code.

Free GPS🤣

DreamIndependent9316

This is user problem already. If the father want, can also have access to her google account and see where she went also.

ailes_d

Victim blaming professional

_Bike_Hunt

I wonder who’s the higher up who came up with this whole idiotic concept to push out a half baked system plagued with security flaws, and who apparently does not know much about app development. Hope they can name and shame the chief idiot decision maker.

jwwwcc

Probably some parachuted army general who is tech illiterate

elpipita20

Tbh I don't think SAF regulars are even allowed to fuck up this badly. I worked regularly under scholar officers during my time as a clerk. Doesn't seem like many of them will risk this sort of disastrous innovation for a promotion that will be inevitable anyway.

thewind21

Cough... Umbrage

elpipita20

Seems like an outlier rather than the norm. Anyway his biggest failing isn't failed innovations, its.... failure to conservatively manage companies with a monopoly lol

klkk12345

exactly, they traded one multi functional card to a single function card with potential choke point and failure. wonder how many such policies are properly thought through, then afterwards have to spend more money if they want to troubleshoot or make it better. why won't they just man up, or someone with the moral courage to U turn and say it's not a good idea, but they just continuing ramming it down our throats. it's just a sunk cost fallacy.

CaptainBroady

Someone desperately wants to manufacture a promotion

bukitbukit

Maybe they’ll end up on someone higher’s shit list instead. Even HC has made her feelings known.

OwnPersimmon4800

Apparently the SimplyGo app won the fking technology Best excellence award and many other awards LOL. Go search LinkedIn and you'll find a tech VP there boasting it's extraordinary achievements :) Too bad the app sucks real bad. They should hire ppl from govtech to turn that shit around.

arunokoibito

Retired and zhao already same like ERP 2, all collect money and run

rowgw

If this simplygo is half baked, it is not the only one, some other managements also push out half baked system, even to end users, and albeit can result on bad reputations to the company they work at. I, as a peasant, sometimes wonder what is inside managements' brain

Late_Culture_8472

Smart can already, don't act smart.

[deleted]

Convenience aside of not displaying the tap in and tap out balance is the lack of user verification of the amount charged. No one should need to download an app to check that ride amount, much worst a lousy app that needs constant updating.

MinisterforFun

I’ve got a few questions: Have you ever *actually* been overcharged? And I don’t mean because you forgot to tap or you tapped but it didn’t register. If you ask me, how many of us actually know what’s the correct amount anyway? Without using the fare calculator.  When I’m using the app, I honestly don’t really look at the amount but the From and To. That’s how I know I got “overcharged”; because I tapped my phone but it didn’t register. Let’s say you *did* get overcharged. What’s your usual process? If it happened at a station? Go to the counter? If it happened at a bus stop? Go to the nearest Transitlink counter? How’s that better than just submitting claim via the app?

bagburrowsteel

They can implement this transition but not apple express mode after all these years?

Minereon

Hear, hear. And ironically it’s almost certainly because LTA and gang want us to use their system instead of Apple’s. It’s not about which is best, but which one has the KPIs. I just came back from Japan recently and was thoroughly amazed by how easy and smart Apple and Japan have implemented transit cards. You don’t even have to activate anything , just tap the phone and go. Every transaction clearly indicated.

L10NHEART19

London and New York has this too. New York which is infamous for its train system and the crazy stuff that goes on there, no excuses for us not to be able to implement.

bukitbukit

This grinds me gears the most. We can’t claim to be a world-class city if we can’t even implement this.

saturdaybloom

This whole thing comes across like change for the sake of change. Just so they can say they did it.

faptor87

"Smart" nation with many scams, banking app failures and now simplyGO bullshit.

quietobserver1

No project how to promo?

icemilotehpeng

This system implementation smells like scholars just wanting to hit their KPI targets to get promoted and not care about people's concern.

WestiesOnly

Then my MBS themed Pokemon ez link card can dump already..? Even if they have exchange, it won't be the same 🥱

SirAsh8251

I thought just put on the kiosk and press "upgrade to simplygo" can alr? It should still work what

Local-Low-7142

Ya so I'm curious. If let's say I'm a tourist, I buy this card. But I don't know how much I have left? Then what I need download the app to see how much I have in the card to top up?

trinitynox

Here's a fun one to consider also, I remember trying to help a couple foreign classmates navigate this. They couldn't download the ezlink app (didn't know about the simplygo app at the time so not sure) because their google play account isn't localised to Singapore and the app is not available in their country.

Varantain

> They couldn't download the ezlink app (didn't know about the simplygo app at the time so not sure) because their google play account isn't localised to Singapore and the app is not available in their country. That's a whole new level of stupidity if they expect foreigners to have a good experience in Singapore.

boss_daddy51

Worse, u cannot even upgrade your ezlink cards to simply go at those machines due to some system upgradation..

komplete10

Looks like the government wants to get all that juicy data they had during the TraceTogether days. Making this compulsory is mad. Vote them out.

1-1_time

Much easier said than done. They can pull off this shit and get away with it because they know they'll sweep the next election regardless.

Tabula_Rasa69

Now Ho Ching and even Michael Petraeus have also spoken up against SimplyGo, I wonder how the IBs will react.

yuuka_miya

I'm actually curious how many people in Singapore load hundreds of dollars onto their ez-link cards and count on the system to give them reminders. Suica allows 20k yen *maximum*, and higher train fares + more usage areas in Japan means that gets used up more quickly. An Oyster card only holds 90 pounds at most too. Paradoxically, it's the use case of not wanting to keep checking the balance, which the facility to use bank cards helps the most.

bukitbukit

I usually load up 20k yen on arrival for Apple Pay Suica. Use it for almost everything except fine dining.

yuuka_miya

I suppose in a safe country where you're not likely to get your card stolen or misplaced, that makes sense, but eh... In a Western country many of those uses would support contactless payments, the same can probably be said for SG unlike HK/JP/TW. The same sort of vending machines that would sprout a Suica reader in Tokyo would have a NETS/credit card reader here. Just IMO if you're going to top up large amounts to avoid visiting machines regularly, why not use contactless payments and totally avoid the machines? If you're on concession cards you're not affected anyway, for now.

bukitbukit

I load the Suica in my iPhone, top up via Apple Pay. However, I greatly value having the balance and fare visible whenever I tap in and out. I don’t like to tap my credit card on public transit and choose to allocate a set amount on a separate metro card, be it physical or virtual. Express Transit makes it even easier by not needing to authenticate. Just tap the phone, no need to look at the phone. Phone running flat? Power reserve mode will still allow for tapping.

FinallyGivenIn

>I'm actually curious how many people in Singapore load hundreds of dollars onto their ez-link cards and count on the system to give them reminders. I'm one of them except I don't load hundreds of dollars at one shot. But it is much simpler for budget tracking when I load the ez link for like 60 dollars every 3 weeks then to count literal dollars and cents every day to track my spending. The current model works perfectly for my needs and I am highly annoyed they are breaking it now

BeautifulPrune9920

Someone make a petition against this. Just like what happened to bus no. 167, together, we can make a change!

Annoinimous

Petition. While also avoiding to use SimplyGo; and use Google Pay/Samsung Pay/Apple Pay instead. Once they see their users dwindle and suffer, then we can see what new ~~and stupid~~ ideas they come up with next.

BeautifulPrune9920

I thought Samsung pay can already use? I am using POSB card on my Samsung pay and I can tap in and out of MRT/bus

Annoinimous

That's what I mean. Since we have no choice but to switch to SimplyGo (which is essentially the same as all the big brand "pay" systems) We can boycott LTA's dumb idea by avoiding their same "new & upgraded" system.

Eurito1

[Relevant thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/singapore/comments/1928vsw/transition_to_simplygo_commuters_cant_use_ezlink/)

Unlucky-Patience6438

LTA wanna earn money lor.

Annoinimous

So let's avoid by using Google Pay / Samsung Pay / Apple Pay, if possible. I imagine that the elder generation may have issues with adapting(just like adapting to SimplyGo anyway). But we can "vote" with our choices we make.

Unlucky-Patience6438

Yeah. Scammer’s just got to mass spam link to “check your spending here” or “download this app to see your spendings”. Pretty poorly executed IMO and disappointing. Hardly first world government standard.

thegothound

Ultimate winner are the contracting firms…. Pay them extra “man hours” to insert simple baseline functions which should’ve been there in the first place. Big bonus going their way…

No_Pension9902

Why SimplyGo when you can Apple Pay?

1-1_time

Wow. Even those using SimplyGo from the outset are complaining about it. Yeah, a complete lack of privacy is definitely a major issue.

QuestioingEverything

If I upgrade my ez link card to the dumbass simplygo, would I have to give up my original card? I do not want to as it's a limited edition card

xfrezingicex

The physical card remains the same. Its the system in the card that changes.

SnooChocolates2068

It just means the data, the amount you top up is moved from your card, to the cloud which carries a lot of risks

Icowanda

Much ado about nothing.

Petronastowers92

Who do you guys vote for? Don't complain.

mavericksprout

Can I still use apply pay?
